Gape at the age of 30 you still have a lot to learn man, doesn’t matter how much you think you’ve achieved…thats why memoirs are usually written later on in life.

Thank you. I do think Ofentse did a solid job at reviewing the book. Do check her out. Everyone else was just singing her praises without equally critiquing the book. ❤🎉
Thank you for the objective review, I think it's very reductive of the girl pals in this comment section to believe that expecting more forthright vulnerability is equivalent to looking for mgosi. The author really does well when it comes to self-actualization, but I agree with you that they shy away from the negative aspects of the their personality, which I expected to see them delving to. By the way, it wouldn't be a matter of us contributing that to the breakdown of her relationships, but a way to understand her more and the way she does things. With that said, Mpoomy's candid endeavours were really shown during the book tours, I mean talking about engaging in sex before marriage and the realization that she loved it, after attempting to repent many a times. I also couldn't reconcile the feminist ideal with the traditional role she assumed after becoming a wife, there's a huge disconnect which I also totally get taking into account how feminism from an African lens, has evolved. I mean choice is at the core of feminism, but it doesn't seem it was her choice to do all that, but what she felt was expected of her as a 'virtuous' wife. I will also say that practising vulnerability isn't so easy, Brene Brown may theorize it, but putting it into practice is really difficult. We need to give the author grace and commend her for taking this leap of faith. She's only 30, so hopefully she does become honest with herself in the future and doesn't see doing that as an attack on the idealistic/ utopian view she has of herself.
It's not mgosi it's you writing about your life.. address it all. You also know what the audience wants to know, what lessons did you learn. How did you feel about ending a friendship? These are universal topics that every girl can relate to.
I think she shared the story about her fallout with Bonolo to avoid addressing the fallout with Yolz and The Wifes. LOL I also wasn’t impressed about the feminist chapter, we all know that Chimamanda is a feminist but I don’t think Mpoomy is. As an avid reader and someone who has been following her work, I do think it wouldn’t make sense for someone who is just a reader
When you said "She lost me when she became a Smeg influencer" I felt it coz thats around the same time I also started watching her content less.. I really loved your take, it was so honest yaz! You actually made me wanna buy it now. Nice work momma
Thank you for the balanced review. I do think the book was written for her audience and not avid readers so the language and style will resonate and the message will land with them*
Thank you for this review. I suspected that the book is not really up to par, as I am also an avid reader. I bought it the first week of release, and I have not read it yet. Now I know what to expect and I will see how far I will go. I absolutely do not mind spoiler alerts. Also, regarding the "fam" , "gal pal" phrases could have been used in the abstract or acknowledgements, not throughout the entire book. With regards to vulnerability, I figured she wouldn't spill fully. Granted, she doesn't owe anyone any explanations. However, it would've been better to read about it in her book than hear things from blogs, etc.

Oh my heart is ticketed. Izolo I wanted to buy black female authors' books but didn't know where to start. I am gonna pretend you and I are in a book club and just buy all those you recommend.
I think your perspective on wealth classes is a bit flawed. To question other peoples pockets and financial struggles based on frivolous things like a sleepover and lasagne is a stretch especially when lasagne is a pasta recipe that families alternate to avoid the mundane meal of the macaroni and mince meat, and sleep overs are just... sleepovers. I think accessibility and open mindedness may seem like wealth when its just creative ways to make means to an end.
The double standard is killing me! If I grew up eating pap and inkomazi, and my grandmother didn’t allow friends to sleep over and therefore, I regard people who grew up eating lasagne and could indulge in sleepovers as privilege, you don’t get to dictate my lived experience. Lastly, wealth is relative. What you regard as a mundane meal is actually a luxury to someone else. That said, thank you for watching and appreciate the feedback.
