      He does an awful job explaining things, and gets things wrong, like the speaker wiring size, he doesn't seem to understand that speakers are running at a higher voltage / lower amperage, making that chart inappropriate.

    • @robshekelberg5315
      @robshekelberg5315 6 років тому

      Volt Lover the chart is appropriate, me and literally every single person in car audio uses it for reference. 0 gauge wire on all my amps, 8-10 gauge wire for all my speakers

    • @timcasiglia6113
      @timcasiglia6113 4 роки тому +1

      No. No. That chart is no where near correct for speakers. 1/0 wire for 100 watts to a speaker 14 feet away!! That would be a silly looking and expensive audio system.

    I have been slowly working my way through all your videos. They are entertaining and sometimes informative. Being somewhat of a car audio noob, this video was quite informative and the solid list of links provided in the description was quite nice. Thank you very much. I thought this video was a nice balance of giving a lot of good information, but still being entertaining enough to keep me from nodding off. I will keep binge watching your videos till I get caught up.

    Awesome vid, @SoundmanCA ! Thanks for the links and great info. One thing I wanted to point out is that you mention using a DSP, but then suggest keeping the mids and tweets close together. This suggestion of placing the mids and tweets as close as possible assumes you aren't using a DSP to time-align the output of each speaker. It is easier to lock in a soundstage when all your speakers are closer together, but it's not impossible with some digital manipulation and patience.

    Great information! I have been in the car audio game a long time and I learned so much in this video. Just installed a bit one plumbed to a 300/4 actively powering a set of JL C5-650s and a 500/1 powering a 10w6 stealth box. I broke the rule and mounted the tweeters higher in the door because of how tight the cab is and the passenger's legs blocked the tweeter. Hopefully the time alignment and independent level control will help with the odd staging.

    doug, i'm glad you're able to put this video out because it will help alot of your viewers. but, and you should know this, you left some important stuff out that i hope you can expand upon in the future. for example, phase and time alignment, which i guess is the same thing. my point is, you can put your tweeter up high in the sail or pillar if you have dsp, like you do, and can control crossover points and t.a., which would allow for the discrepancy that cdt was trying to help avoid. their assumption is that you'll be using the supplied passive xo, which you're not doing, so that philosophy isn't exactly applicable.
    anyway, i'd like to see you do a 3 way setup, strictly midbass in the doors and then do a mid/tweet combo up higher some where. there's alot of high end competitors doing this with great results.

    In the business since the 80's and let me tell you that the majority of "car stereo" speakers are just toys. Rip off. Home audio speakers are so much better that even the most reasonably priced set is so next level in comparison. Different league all together. I've always loved Definitive Technologies speakers and they sell a pair of Pro1000 studio monitors that can handle 300 watts of deliciously detailed sounds clean and crystal fucking clear for 200 bucks. I have always ever run Dev Tec's in my cars. Top of the line JL's, Focal, Canton or even Eton's can't even come close. No comparison. I haven't used "car audio" speakers since the late 90's. And if you do everything Soundman is saying in this video you can achieve something fantastic and wonderful.

  • @MrRoberacer
    @MrRoberacer 7 років тому

    Doug. You spent a lot of time talking about tweeter placement is this. At one point I would have totally argued the same point until I got messing around with stuff doing some experimentation.
    Let's go back in time a bit. One of the oldest running manufacturers of speakers currently is Tannoy. They developed what is called the "Dual Concentric" diver. What is that? Well, I own a bunch of these they are my faves by far. I drag them with me when I am working even. What it is, is the high-frequency driver is actually build in such a way that it originates at the same position as the acoustical center of the low-frequency driver. This is different than a coaxial design in that the HF is not in front of the low. Google them if you haven't seen them. The tech has actually been widely adopted in pro audio and is now the mainstay of the upper end of the stage monitor market. The design is not so good at producing extreme sound pressure levels so anything crazy high output doesn't utilize that tech. That said they are extremely linear in both phase and frequency response and are some of the flattest response speakers ever mass produced.
    Why I brought all of that up is because Dual Concentric Speaker designs use what we call "Point Source Theory". It has to do with sound emanating from one source and how the waveforms interact moving through the air. You can google that too. The AES (audio engineers society) can explain that way better than I ever could. By no means to I not believe in this stuff. Where things go awry is when we get into imperfect scenarios. Cars are a case in point. We all know that trying to push sound around your friends' legs in a car definitely causes some of the audio spectrum to be inhibited right? This is why we often use the area in or around the "A" pillar as the optimal placement. Meanwhile, how the heck can we see around this giant 8" (6.5" for the driver plus the cabinet to put it in ) that sits on the dash in order to drive? Let's just say it is typically not practical to mount a full spectrum driver assembly anywhere that we can actually be within direct earshot of it in your car. If for some reason you have a car that you can... Awesome for you. Most of us can't. With that we need to compromise somewhere (somehow) but where is a very good question.
    The first thing everyone reaches for is the eq knob (treble control). If we turn up the zone of frequencies that are being degraded we can sort of make it sound right again. Not quite though eh? That is because what we are actually hearing are reflections off of the surrounding surfaces as the actual direct source energy (or a big portion of it anyway, that is why it sounds like it is missing) is being absorbed by the meat bags in the seats (and/or stuff). The thing to note here is that what we are hearing is delayed and by engaging the tone control we just introduced another phase anomaly as well. BTW phase is related to time but not quite the same thing however in audio most of the "phase" problems are caused by time displacement and not actual purely phase shift so time is the corrective measure most often used. So what about the lower frequencies produced by the lower frequency drivers? With sound, we need to know that the lower in frequency we go (as pertaining to the human hearing range that is) the more sound gains the ability to go around or through obstructions. This is where art and science meet. Which frequencies and how much? There is probably some set of experiments that there done that tell us this but I don't know anyone who actually knows where to find that data. Needless to say, experience can tell us a bit about that. We don't have to be physicists to figure this stuff out. We aren't idiots! IF we move the tweeter away from the lower driver we are going to have to look at time arrival stuff individually to the drivers. OK, we can adjust for that in the Audison (or Helix, or Rockford processor or whatever) provided each driver is being powered by it's own amp channel. With that we need to look at the specs on each driver so see 1. what kinds of frequency information it can handle, dispersion characteristics and distortion characteristics to determine how we can use them. I opted to have my inverted dome tweeters mounted on the dash pointed away from the glass. I did not want to couple them to the mounting environment whatsoever so I had to do a bunch of baffling work to do around them. These drivers will function really low in frequency for a tweeter however they inherently have some nasty distortion that they produce in the 2-3 Khz region hence I have considered them unusable there. Mine is a 2 way (plus sub) system and the lower frequency driver needs some work in the upper mid band (2K+ range) to be usable so eq is required. Long storey short I traded one set of losses and gains for another set in order to hopefully win out overall. That is what makes audio what it is and why it is a blend of science and art. I did win too. Most of my friends are audio engineers and no-one diss's the sound in my car. No, the two drivers are not in close proximity to each other however it still sounds great and the imaging is possibly better than if I had placed the tweeters lower on the door. The biggest parameter I found to concern myself with was time correction. That will change everything for you. As long as things arrive relatively (precisely for by most folk's standards) in phase at your head that is key. EQ does effect that so you need to time align, before and after eq and maybe adjust both a few times more as one effects the other. I am doing some weird stuff at the crossover as well as I am asking the low driver to do things it was kind of not intended for but it is working great.

    I have to say it: Since I am currently in the positioning stage with my tweeters, I decided for shits and giggles to make some temporary wire-hanger mounts for my tweeters and taped them low on my panels. I felt fairly sure this was going to lower my soundstage, but it didn't. If anything, it tightened the stage. Before, if I listened to a vocalist who had range, their voice would 'float' and seemed to change position depending on which notes they were hitting. Now they stay put. I haven't even played with different locations or angles yet, but already my sound stage SO much better. I have leaned toward SQ installs since the 90's but had never heard or read of this type of positioning before, but, damn it all, it works.

      +Michael Craven isn't it crazy?!? It's really something you have to hear to realize what a difference it makes. 👌👌

    • @Leekle2ManE
      @Leekle2ManE 7 років тому

      Turns out I got lucky with my first placement. Not completely lucky, but lucky enough. I was in a rush to get out the door when I finished the temp wire mounts and just slapped them in. After getting my kids from school, I found that having a passenger ruined the right channel, so I have been playing with other positions. If the angle is wrong, mounting in this area _can_ lower the soundstage. With my first placement, I just happened to have the upward angle right. Gonna have to keep playing with placement and angles, but I do think that the with the tightness of the vocals, this is the right area to be in. Learned something new today.

      Michael Craven your ears are very good at placing sound directionally around you.Because our ears are on either side of our head. this causes there to be a time difference in a sound waves arrival. this mean we know what direction is coming from
      what our earlier are not very good at is telling what height sound is coming from because our ears are level with each other :-)

    • @Leekle2ManE
      @Leekle2ManE 7 років тому

      Jack Finks They might not be 'good' at discerning height, but they can dscern a difference. If you have a center channel speaker on your home stereo, get someone to lift and lower it while you have your eyes closed. You should notice a difference in positioning. I am no doctor or nurse nor a biologist, but there is more how our ears function than just where they are placed. All the little channels and curves in our ears help to place position. I imagine that since the sounds from a tweeter are so tight that where the 'beam' of sound hits our ears helps us to determine positioning.

    We had the best systems back in the day! with REAL music! Pyramid EQ, Poineer or Kenwood stereo's, take out your back seat and install a piece of plywood and 2 fifteens, amp in the trunk or under the passenger seat, build a box for the trunk, speakers in the doors. I could hear my friend coming at least a 1/4 to 1/2 a mile away!

    Doug, If you want to keep your Tweeters close to your mids. Would it make sense to just purchase mids that have the tweeters mounted in the center of the mid? I think their called Coxials or Two ways (not sure exactly)?

    Good Video Doug, I completely agree with you on the tweets, I know you know your shit! I , one thing you didn't talk about was true 3 way, we don't all have hybrids! If M/B are crossed low and all your vocals and highs are in pods on dash does that make up for the distance at all?? being that bass is non directional? or is all together always your preference???
    I'm asking because I'm planning my first 3-way system in a new car with a small cab, I know sails are not necessarily the best place to put the mids and tweets but it seems like the only realistic option given the time and hacking/modding involved in doing anything else. im planning on doing off axis as far away as possible and im using hertz mille legends.

    Hahahaha, nice job explaining away the 'know it all' responders. Yes there are some knowledgeable UA-cam comments but far too many people throw bullshit out because their sisters boyfriends cousin has a custom autozone/Walmart system in his civic and it's amazing.
    I love the daily content and humor but I think some of the viewers needed to know that you aren't just hacking shit together.

    Re amp current - 83.3333 amps for 1000 watt amplifier is assuming the amp is 100% efficient, which none are. Most amps are class AB which are 50-70% efficient. Many new amps are class D which are over 90% efficient and therefore very small and run much cooler.. Don't want the damn amps to twist

      Its a guide and he used 12 volts as a estimate. Your alternator puts out 13-14volts and you're rarely asking for 100% so there's plenty of headroom in his calculation. If you're at the edge of things you always go up in size anyway.

    Alright, I got an 05 trailblazer. They have a 6.5 in the door and a 3.5 in the dash. If I put a 6.5 mid woofer in the door, a 3.5 coaxial in the dash and a tweet in the A pillar, would I be okay? Or should I just put a 4" Dayton "full range" in the dash to take up the higher range and omit the tweets?

    Have you gotten the chance to check out Audio Dynamics specifically there are 3000 or 4000 series components I recently built an SQ system my first and did a lot of homework it was either between Audio Dynamics or focals power K2 series and I was blown away with the performance and crisp clean tone of Audio Dynamics because I'm also building a wall six order series tuned for 218s I only had my front stage to work with I put two 6.5 3000 series drivers in my doors custom fiberglass and the dome tweeters in my a pillars I am running full active with their DSP on their four channel

    Can time alignment and crossover points help with tweeters being mounted away from the mid? I'm talking tweeter in dash and mid/mid bass in door in a full size truck like a Ram?

    this is probably a stupid question but......does a 3 way component setup change the issue (or is it atleast more forgiving) with the tweeters and the a pillar? they are going in a 2001 Z06 and the tweeter is only 5-6" above the 3" midrange. (focal ps 165 f3 set) i plan on putting them all in the door but just wanted to know.
