When i graduated high school, I took a trip to the Mayan jungle by myself at 19. I went on a tour where we repelled down into the world’s longest underground river. Then we snorkeled for a few hours through the cave with headlamps. It was a surreal experience and love that I took a leap out of my comfort zone and went by myself!

Favorite outdoor moment in 5 sentences.
My sister and I grew up on our Dad's 40 acre horse farm in rural southern Indiana. Around age 9ish, my sister and I kept hearing a monkey calling in our woods near the barn, and even saw it bolt out of our barn once. The monkey was getting into our horse feed barrels and eating the grain every night, and each morning we caught hell for leaving the gran bin open and lying about a monkey being responsible. This went on for a good month or two before an old lady nearby ended up in the hospital because she heard a ruckus in her chicken coop, and the monkey busted out, in her face, as she was opening the coop to check her chickens. He still refuses to apologize for the punishments of extra barn chores and yellings we got because of that damn escaped pet monkey. 😂

One of my favorite outdoor moments was when a buddy of mine took me spear fishing for the first time. We were diving in 30 feet of water with 10 feet of visibility looking for hogfish and sheepshead. I dove down and chased a big hogfish and then stoned it next to a massive 400lb Goliath grouper! I was in total awe of this massive fish and absolutely fell in love with the sport

My favorite outdoor moment in 5 sentences? Alright.
Growing up in West Virginia with my Uncles, Cousins and Grandfather. Learning how to shoot a gun, cast a real, pick berries, track an animal, going camping and so much more. I spent well over 50% of my childhood in the woods and in nature. Learning everything I know from my family (most of whom are no longer alive). To name my favorite outdoor experience would be impossible to do. Every moment I got to spend with my grandfather in the woods would have to be my favorite memory ♥️

While in High School I heard stories of the "Black Panthers" of central Alabama, and naturally dismissed them as hunting tales. In Fall of 2000, I found myself deer hunting my uncle's lease in Coosa County Alabama; at about dark I was surprised by this crazy "Chuffing" noise about 20ft to my right, scared the shit out of me. As darkness fell, I called my uncle on an old two way to bring his pick up all the way down the logging road to pick me up; as I started backing out of the woods I could hear foot steps in the leaves pacing me out towards the road. As his head lights brightened my immediate vicinity, I called him on the two way and and told him I was going to slowly turn and walk to the truck and to blow the horn if he saw any movement behind me; my walk to the truck was terrifying yet thankfully uneventful. As I closed the door on the truck I looked at him as he stared straight ahead, fixated on the spot near the trees where I stood moments before; in the trees were two reflective eyes about 8" apart.
The event I recounted above is what set me on the path to my B.S. Biology and Environmental Sciences form Auburn University.

About 20 years ago now I flew into the airport in Fort Meyers, FL. The sun was setting as the plane landed. I always remember seeing panther crossing signs down there but never a panther. My cousin picked me up and just outside the airport....at a stop light....a black panther ran across the road in front of the car as we were stopped. It was NOT a black house cat. It was an ENORMOUS panther that was jet black.
Never saw another panther of any color in Florida. My cousin and I still speak about that moment to this day. The hair on both of our spines stood tall.....

One of my favorite outdoor moments was in Costa Rica volunteering for sea turtle conservation and the biologists said we wouldn’t see huge turtles because they get poached. The first morning some locals were yelling at us in Spanish and pointing to the beach so we jumped in their truck to see what was going on. When we got to the beach there was a massive leatherback laying her eggs in the middle of the day. They said they’d never seen a bigger leatherback and definitely not during the day. She looked like a dinosaur it was incredible!

And then the next morning there was a clutch of learherbacks in the nursery that hatched and we got to weight and measure them before we released them on the beach. It was an amazing experience!

There was a larger space between my self and my second brother. My wife took a picture not noticing. A week later our noticed the space and if he was with us in this picture there was enough space between for him. It was was a beautiful picture and moment once we realized. I once found a toad at a friend's house and when he came back out I jokingly tried to put the toad on his shoulder. He hit my arm away and I guess I squeezed it and the toad pissed a perfect arc onto his mouth.
I spent an hour and a half laughing until I couldn't breathe. I tried apologizing but it sounded insincere through my laughter.

I’ll never forget one fall while moose hunting out of a tree stand at dawn. When out of a sudden a pack of wolves start howling far out in the distance, where I than say to my friend hunting with me “want me to call it in?”. As a joke I start howling mimicking the wolves I’m hearing when the whole back stop howling except for one. As it gets closer and closer I decide to get out of the tree stand to see it on the ground up close and personal. No more than 15 minutes of howling back and forth later, the large male wolf appeared over the hill staring down at the two of us no more than 20yards away where I than turn to my friend and say “told ya”.

Growing up I lived right next to the Delaware Canal in PA. Eels were a common catch in the canal. I can say, with 101% certainty, that those eels mated, gave birth and the eels grew up in the Delaware Canal. Nowhere else.
With the exceptions of the occasional lock and/or towpath breach, the canal is NOT open to the Delaware River.

The second day in town we were introduced to members of a Huaorani tribe. They were trading with locals for medicine to take back to their secluded tribe. The locals explained the tribe only visits once every 6 to 7 months, such an eye opening experience.

Since you guys love animals, I think you guys would think slam is interesting. basically slam death metal is one of the most extreme genres of metal music. Most focus on gore, or dark humor but some genuinely sound like animals. Especially one of my favorites, Agonal Breathing. Their song “Ripped to Pieces” sound like a type of reptile brutally torturing a man and hissing while drums and guitars are playing in the background. Another good one is Guttural Slug with their album Megalodon. The song “Hacksaw Surgery” is one I think Forrest would like with the cricket style vocals at some points. It’s just really fun music and basically sounds like what you’d think you’d hear when watching “nature is metal”

    Hey Gentlemen,
I love all of the Extinct or Alive shows. This podcast is gold!
Here is my crazy nature story. I typically would hike and camp on Mt.Ranier with my 3 great friends for many years. One lovely fall day, I believe it was 2008. We would always run around the glacial river and find rocks logs and other means of passing through the extremely fast dangerous and fun river. Near the camp site there where slower moving off shoots. As we where returning to the campsite i saw a salmon in the slower moving water and i grabbed it out if the water. It SKEET SHOT 😮all over one of my friends. I still have a photo of me with this fish. Even thogh it was a huge waste of salmon regen, it was hilarious 😅and I will never forget it!! I had a digital camera and was taking random photos. Later upon examining the photos we saw a smashed coyote against a tree. The photo was taken during a circle sesh.
    LONG READ!!! WORTH IT!!!🎉

I caught a baby snapping turtle, baby bass and bluegills, and the craziest catch was a tiny inch long catfish, caught ice fishing it popped out of the water when we broke the ice off the holes for a second day of fishing.

When I was seven my family was walking around Jenny Lake in the Grand Tetons and being a little seven year old ball of energy I had gotten ahead of the group by about 100 feet. All of a sudden I heard my dad call my name and he pointed down the trail, a few hundred feet down the trail there was a brown bear staring right at me. My family caught up to me and we all started backpedalling away, then the bear charged at us and got to probably fifteen feet from us and kept that distance as we kept backpedaling. My 6’7” mutant of a father stumbled and kicked some gravel, which scared the bear and it climbed 30 feet up a tree, it came back down when we got a little further away and my dad kicked up more gravel and the bear went up another tree. That sequence continued for what felt like an hour before another group of people came up behind us and the bear ran away.
Not the most fun day ever but it makes for a great story!

While I snorkeled around the reef my stomach suddenly dropped and I knew I had no choice. So I broke away from the group and hid behind a little coral bommie. I then proceeded to spray the reef with a very foul poo. This happened two more times, and I resumed a lovely snorkel.

An awesome outdoors moment I had was while I was on a hunt for white tail deer. I live in Oklahoma and I was sitting atop in a tree stand, waiting for some sort of white tail deer to come by. I witnessed one of the coolest things I have ever seen in nature. A bobcat came sprinting by the stand I was in and quickly following this bobcat was two foxes! The foxes caught this bobcat right in front of my tree stand. ( now the bobcat wasn’t an adult because he/she was relatively small) but the two foxes caught the bobcat and killed the poor little thing right in front of me. It was the craziest thing I have personally ever seen. They probably fought for 5 minutes until the two foxes finally overcame the bobcat. I didn’t even know foxes would hunt down bobcats? But it was really gnarly.

I’m from Ireland so we don’t have much wildlife besides cows and sheep, but our waters are full of life. We had a small boat when I was younger but never out far so I hadn’t ever seen any marine animal. But one day the water was so calm that we went out around 10k(16miles) but even with glass like waters we didn’t see anything. When my dad said it was time to go back I started moving my life jacket against a metal handle making a squeaking noise and convinced my family it was dolphins squeaking. Having them fooled we stayed out looking, fast forward an hour a huge pod of bottle nosed dolphins came from nowhere and swam with the boat for 30 minutes, it’s one of my best memories and began my fascination with all things wild

My favorite outdoor moment has to be when I climbed Uncompahgre Peak in the Uncompahgre National Forest, CO when I was 13 or 14. I was with my scout troop up until we got separated on the hiking trail because they kept stopping to take breathers and breaks and every time they did I decided to keep trekking forward. I beat the second person in my group to the top of the peak by 45 minutes and my father by about 2 hours! I almost ran out of water along the way but luckily I had caught up to an older couple and their dog that was literally about to pour out one of their extra Nalgene bottles full of Gatorade due to the extra weight just as i approached. If I had stopped with my troop and not pressed on, I never would have caught up with them and when I finally reached the top, not only did it truly feel like a life accomplishment, but I also got the experience of standing atop a 14,321’ peak all by myself and that is absolutely a moment I will never forget.

3:25 When he’s talking about a bunch of 40 year olds thrashing at a concert made me think of Lalapalooza in Chicago years ago, I remember hearing Social Distortion coming on at the stage kinda behind where we were…and there wasn’t a huge crowd there, but there was a guy probably in his 30s with his wife who didn’t care about being there and their toddler. Halfway thru the first song, dude was in a time warp that took him back to his past…he was up and jumping and dancing and belting out every word to every song. Wifey and baby were laying up on a big blanket. By the second song, I’d spotted several more versions of this dude…all in literally the same situation…. By the fourth song…they’d noticed each other and the kindred spirit started drawing them nearer to each other. By the end of the concert, they were like best buddies teleported back to the 90s. And I think at least he other wifey and baby had migrated over to the original fam’s blanket. lol!

I live in the UK and (through GTA5) made friends with some guys that live in Mass. I went to meet them after 4 years of playing together, we planned a road trip to Maine for a week in a log cabin next to a beautiful lake. On our third night we had a campfire, cooked some weiners, smoked and drank into the night. When it was time for bed, i joked and said "hey guys, how creepy would it be if i shone my torch into the woods and all we saw was a load of eyes looking back!!"
I shine my torch into the pitch black woods and low and behold, there was a sea of reflections from the dark. We froze, terrified, my eyes adjusted and i made out the minute silhouette of a fawn; realising it was a family of deer.

My mother was born and raised in Iowa, but lived in Cooke City, Montana for 3 years in the early 80's. Grew up listening to her stories and adventures from her time in Montana. In April 2022, she was diagnosed with ALS and passed away late October 2022. 😢 After she passed, 2 longtime friends that have been doing backcountry backpacking trips for the last 8 years, asked me if I would join them on a trip to the Absaroka Beartooth Wilderness outside of Cooke City, Montana. The 3 of us went in late August this year and it was AMAZING! We did 30 miles on a trail called 'The Beaten Path'. The most beautiful place ever and had the best time with 2 great friends. 2 miles of the trail were washed out (part of the mountain had collapsed the prior spring from yellowstone area flooding) and super sketchy. Had to cross some rickety log bridges over fasting moving water and climb rocks the size of houses to get back to the last 3 miles of trail, but damn, memories that will last forever no doubt. I'd never been on a hiking/backpacking trip out west prior, but now planning on joining my friends on the annual trip. Next summer we are planning to kayak the Bitterroot and the following year hike the Bob Marshall Wilderness and eventually Glacier NP. I pretty much spend every moment thinking about exploring the great outdoors now.

I told my youngest forget fishing let’s go swimming.. After 1/2 hr my youngest who was swimming by some rocks asked if we counted fish without a reel , after giving him the skunk eye Ias I had no idea what he was dreaming up I confirmed that if alive then yes it would count. He than pulled up a small catfish that he caught bare handed. What made it funny he went on to catch the most for the weekend, with his brother trying to swim for another catfish.

My favortie time in the outdoors is a difficult question, but the best time was probably "ice fishing" at like 13 years old. Hiked down to the old quarries in town, on the way grabbed a rail road spike off the side of the tracks as we crossed. Had a mini sledge that i had found in the woods years earlier a d used the spike as a chisel to punch holes into the ice. After fishing for a while, and catching nothing we started getting a bit cold due to underpreparation. We decided to use my leatherman rebar to cut down a small dead pine and pull it onto the ice to start a fire. Cooked up sone ramen over the fire, and melted snow for water. We were out there all day, day break to sunset. Though not a single fish waa caught, it was a great time.

On that same quarry my buddy and I had pulled an aluminum boat from under the water, and it was missing a plug. So we made a plug for it from a water bottle and some electrical tape. While we were on the water fishing from that boat, using a stick with my shirt wrapped around it as a paddle, three people walked up to the top of the 60ft cliff looking over the quarry. Turns out the two guys had just gotten out of the army and wanted to show their sister how to rappel. They had all of their climbing gear, but the limestone wouldn't hold up to them climbing back up. Of course not realizing this until one got to the bottom, they called to us to grab him and bring him to shore. We became a ferry for them the rest of the day. Before they left, they asked if we wanted to try it out. Though I am afraid of heights, I couldn't pass up the opportunity. I had already jumped off that cliff before, and barely survived. But I survived. So I figured if I do fall, at least I won't die. Was the most fun I'd ever had while almost shitting myself from fear.

One of my top outdoor moments!!
I was strolling through the Forrest, On a Wednesday.
All of a sudden I saw a Dude walking a Fricken LION!! across his land.
I was scared, But I slowly followed through the bushes for 15 Minutes!
I was ducking and diving between trees like a ninja, trying to get an iconic blurry photo.
I finally got within 50 yards,,,, it was an elderly English Mastiff with a limp!

In 2019 I was WWOOFing around New Zealand and to kick it off I was at a farm in Bethells Beach on the north island. One of my days off I hitch hiked to the beach and found a secluded bay and proceeded to snorkel along this rocky peninsula. Visibility wasn’t great perhaps 30ft tops and I started to hear a clicking noise behind me. When I turned around I was nearly face to face with an Orca and I freaked out and swam like hell then scrambled out of the water. Sitting on the edge I watched as the Orca swam back and forth along this rocky peninsula hunting for fish and when I regained my nerve I slid back in and watched this magnificent creature until inevitably it left in search of fishier pastures.

Mountain lion in Indiana. My sister and i went riding horses and decided to ride through the woods that we have taken a thousand times. Riding along no saddle and my sister stopped and i jokingly asked what did you see a monster. She looks back at me white as can be and points infront of her, i look up and on a big tree across the trail maybe 50 feet infront of us is a very large mountain lion standing on a downed tree staring straight at us. We do the worst possible thing and turn and run half a mile back home without looking back.

My favorite outdoor moment was last year here in Atlantic Canada. We were on a road trip and we are used to seeing bald eagles and hawks in these areas, but this trip was unlike any other. My girlfriend and I both saw at the same time a large bird perched on a rock down by the river. He was massive, had a large beak and a great white tuft of feathers on his shoulder. We both saw it and did a double take, it was unlike any bird we had ever seen. As it flew away i was left ln awe at seeing this new species. I described what i seen, she agreed it was the same thing and upon research we learned it must have been a Stellers sea eagle, all the way over in the Atlantic halfway across the world from its home.

When I was In highschool i went on a community service trip to south africa and on the trip we ended up having a few days of safari in kruger national park. Early in the morning we saw one of very few white lions that are wild in kruger and we had to stop and call it in. Later that day we all flew to cape town and saw penguins on the beach, so i can say i have seen wild lions and penguins in person on the same day!

So here’s my entry- tried on Spotify but there’s a character limit.
While fishing late at night off Marina del Rey on a friend’s 15’ skiff I spotted something that looked like a small inflatable zodiac just vanished. He stopped the boat and we sat for a second, only to have a large boil in front of us while we were in deep water. As the words “WTF” came out of my mouth, an orca cleared the water about 10’ behind the boat, I screamed like a girl, my buddy gunned it. Turned out we were in the middle of LA’s resident pod of orcas enjoying a late night seal massacre.

    Outdoor moment:
I was a medic in the military, and was constantly yelling at infantrymen to not fuck with wildlife. My unit and I were in southern Arizona near the border one time. One night after watching a coyote decimate a rabbit on a way too expensive FLIR cam, I got out to take a piss under a red light headlamp. I hear something rustling at my feet so I stop and flip on my white light, and I see a very piss-soaked, very angry looking diamondback rattling its tail at me. I spun around and got back in the truck before I could even get the buttons on my pants done.

My one in a billion: when my grandma died, I was helping the family clear out her place. I was removing posters from a room. I noticed something moving out the corner of my eye. It was an earwig crawling on the wall. It crawled over a crucifix hanging up. I flicked a thumbtack I was holding at it. It pierced and pinned the earwig to the crucifix. To this day, sometimes I refer to myself as the Pontus Pilot of the earwig world.

We left our house at midnight & he drove 3 hours (having to change a tyre on the way!) to a small port town his grandparents lived in. My favorite outdoor adventure was the 2nd time I hiked through the longest slot canyon in the world, Paria Canyon in northern Arizona. We entered knowing there was a 5% chance of rain thinking we'd be fine, but 3/4 through the narrows I feel raindrops and start speed wading through waist high pools to get out. We stopped to wait at the confluence for the others and witnessed a terrifying wave of muddy, debris filled flash flood come out of the narrows. After giving up on the rest of our group but not seeing any of their gear wash through, we hiked downriver with waterfalls off the canyon rim left and right, and fear of falling rocks. Camped out at a turn with a highrise shelter and hiked against the river to find our group under an overhang with a cozy fire going one turn behind us.

As we got there, we hopped into the water and a pair of loons surfaced, called to each other then took off. While we were swimming, a beaver showed up swam within 20 feet of us and exited the water. Fast forward 15 minutes multiple beavers had followed the first one!

One time I was camping in Northern Spain. I was sleeping in a tent and when the sun came up I woke up and rolled over half asleep and I hear and feel all kinds of creaking. I open my eyes and see that I am completely rolling in snails. hundreds or thousands of snails were in and on my tent. I accidentally didn't zip the tent all the way up. Definitely not the most beautiful thing I've experienced in the wild, but unforgettably rancid. Just thinking about it gives me chills again.

    - The final fall -
While meandering the Chihuahua desert in search of traces of the ancient world, I found myself approaching a pouroff that induced mirages of a jungle ridden land where the water once fell from the heavens. Remains of the beasts from this once coastal paradise lay preserved baked in stone for hundreds of millions of years under the persistent southern sun. I tread softly along the base of a massive red shelf, looking up wondering where the top of the cliff meets the sky. Suddenly upon approaching the base of the dry waterfall, there lay motionless an aspiring alpha Audad which met its end by falling from the bluffs above. As I observed its undisturbed remains my attention was drawn back to the sky above at the gentle sound of some rocks giving way, there peering down from high above at his unfortunate former opponent was big daddy Audad still amongst the living as it made way across the cliff with his maidens that appeared to be suspended from the rock itself.

    Contest entry:
Was on a trip with some mates from church to help build a church in Kingfield, Maine. On the way back and forth to the work site, we could see an iron/metal bridge just a short, maybe a quarter mile from the cabins. Last afternoon being there, the two teenagers wanted to go check out the bridge, and I'm always down for adventure. So before we head out a couple locals mentioned to not step in the water. Me being curious, asked why, and the leeches are so ravenous in that area that it is common to have multiple on you after a minute of being in the water. Oh, and I forgot to mention it is like second week of August, and we're in thick woods Northern Maine. So back of my mind, I'm thinking it's Moose rut season. So we start rock hopping on the way up to the bridge. We get to the bridge just after the sun sets. No flashlights, no means of protection, no cell signal, no bueno. I tell the teens, "I have a hunch on how to get back to the camp, but if i tell to get behind me, get behind me. If i tell you to run, run." They agreed. I knew there's a high chance that there's easily something out there that could mess us all up and us not see it coming in the dark. So we just started walking slowly and quietly up to where I thought road was going to be. We found the road, hung a left and made it back.
The next day I asked one of the locals, "I'm thinking Northern Maine, I expect deer, moose, turkeys, just wild animals all over the place. I haven't even seen a gray squirrel or small song birds. That's really odd to me." He said, "the reason you haven't seen any animals, is it's bear mating season. You don't mess around in Moose rut, ain't nothing getting out the thick woods during bear mating season." I wish I had known that the night before, but I'm alive to tell the tale.

Well I solo camp alot and my favorite one was when a bear came into my camp! I had bells up i heard him ! I woke up opened the tent a lil ! i had a pistol! But there was the bear a 250 lb black bear about 12 13 feet away eating sometihng just sitting like a human! And then he stood up after a little bit and scratched his back on the nearest tree! I was so amazed he was not that scared of me i guess! He was also not threating at all! I ended up falling asleep right after he left! And what an impression it made on me! When I was one with nature like I felt i was the closest to that there i would say when solo camping just me and my pooch! And the bear felt it too i think! Plus i had pizza prezel combos which he ate the bag and all but they are that good so i understood! Love the cast! I subscribed and liked! Honestly man ur podcast is just realistic ! I hope one day i dont hear it is scripted! I mean i know some stuff has to be so it is brought into the show but forest find more protect more! Your name has been such a help to this world we live in that we take for granted! You other fools you have my respect!

The snow that was casually placed by mother nature now rolled, dare I say crafted, into a massive orb of destruction. A feat of strength, an essence of suspend and finally joy as our creation tumbled down the hill crashing of a rock in the forest below.

As we were looking from the near the top of the mountain through my binos we spotted a little fox, didn’t seem to be a mature one as he was pretty small. But we were watching him for about 10 minutes or so before he started flying, some kind of bird had come down and scooped him up. I’m honestly not too sure what kind of bird it was as I know more of the fish and mammal species in my area but we watched the bird carry this fox that had to be at least 10lbs until it disappeared into the brush.

My now wife (new girlfriend at the time) drove 26 hours from Wisconsin to Moraine lake Canada, kayaks in tow. We arrived early enough in the season for the boat rental shop to be closed and the ice to be mostly thawed. We had the whole lake to paddle to our selves! There was still a thin layer of ice in the shadows of the mountains that would crack under the kayak as we paddled through it. We felt like movie stars coming back to shore because all the normie tourists were taking our photo; even had a couple offers to buy our yaks on the spot!
