- It's time to finish our swimming pool this week on our Portugal homestead, complete with concrete couch - can you believe it! It makes all the difference as the heat wave hits Portugal, temperatures are climbing to over 40 degrees celsius and we have somewhere to cool off!

We are John, Tara, and Crusoe Newby. A family of explorers who have recently embarked on our most ambitious project yet - the renovation of an abandoned farm in Northern Portugal. I just watched the Mapperton House videos about restoring their 18th century pool. After getting expert advice about how to avoid having scum in their pool, they constructed floating plant islands that are tethered to the sides of the pool. The plants help with the nutrient levels and keep the water healthy for human swimming. Maybe a small floating plant island might work for your pool!

@@TheNewbys If you go with this method, you will also have to consider small fish to eat the mosquito larvae. My neighbors have a natural swimming pool (much larger) which is now about 30 years old. Everything is in balance with reed keeping the algae down and the water clear.

@@johnsexton3841 I have done a lot of research on pools, unfortunately only AFTER I introduced fish to my pool, also thinking it is for mosquitoes.
What I learned since, is that the mosquitoes that sting humans do not breed in deep water like that of a pool. And introducing fish is a disaster. They make the water too rich and you struggle to keep it clean. The best way to do it is with the floating plants and a small pump. A solar one is best.

Used to have a pool filled with spring water but it needed a pump/Sandfilter system and chlorine to keep it clean. But a friend of mine who lives in Florida told me that he changed this Sandfilter/chlorine system with a little box/system that keeps it perfectly clean with ultraviolet light. Maybe you can find some information about this in the internet, because I think it's much nicer than the chlorine.
We had a Hot Tub for 5 years. In the Spring my husband would fill the tub with house water. Then he would test the water for P H and Clorine with a test kit (strip of paper that changed color when put in the water) The Hot Tub had a pump that pulled the water pass the ultraviolet light that killed the bacteria and the filter. Everything was in the wall of the tub. I don't see why you can't go to a pool store and describe what you have and get what your need.
I would add you also need a good water test kit. We used to have a swimming pool and it was a lot of work to keep it clean and keeping the ph balance.

You should tile the outside of the pool it will look amazing and very portuguese with a slight flair. As for keeping the water clear you might need to do an over flow that will water the garden, the flowing water will keep it clean . Think communal portuguese clothes washing area !!!!

@clifeguimaraes763- I totally agree! That is a great idea! Putting Portuguese tile on the OUTSIDE of the pool would be awesome! Tara just bought some Moroccan Tile on their last vacation. She planned to use it for the picnic table, ect. But she did mention that she wanted to buy some Portuguese tile. Here is a great place to use it and maybe even on the SEAT of the throne.

Amazing great work! We just used Milton bottle steriliser tablets in our small pool to extend the time the water lasts before it's green, they are also mild enough that the water can still be used on plants. Also a Skimmer net is a must to pick up leaves keeps it cleaner longer.

Loved the finished pool guys, I was a bit sceptical but it works. You will need a filter to keep the water clean and can buy suitable combined above ground pool filters & pump relatively cheaply but you will require power. Cheers K.

Hello John, Tara and Crusoé, the pool was great and with so much vegetation around it was phenomenal. Congratulations on a fabulous job! 🌞🥰👏👏👏First suggestion would be what they do in many public swimming pools…a small water filled foot bath just outside that you can wash off dirty feet before getting into the pool. It’ll help to keep the water clean. At worst…even a square laundry bucket would work. Happy days ahead 🐠😁🌞

Well done, it looks so cool and inviting! As you want to be able to use the water for the garden perhaps a sand filter would be best, though it might involve knocking a couple of holes through for in-flow and out-flow! Enjoyed watching the progress and the family fun at the end, stay cool Newbys!

@@TheNewbys The pool looks so lovely, Yes a sand filter would be good but you will also need to treat the water with chorine or salt filter system so you and Crusoe don't get sick.
@@BelsGels If you put chlorine in it, you won't be able to use the water for the garden, though. Just sayin'.
@@bevtrue6937 no...the ammount of chlorine used on the water pool is low and it became inactive very fast... more so with high temps... that's why it needs be added daily to the water...on the contrary salt water will kill all the veggies and even the vegetation .....

Great accomplishment, guys! Mom sends her greetings as she wants to make sure you have a way to keep Crusoe from falling in the pool. I told her she worries too much, but she keeps reminding me that she covered our pool so, when we were kids, couldn’t get in it without supervision.

Keep feeding the water from the top and put a small drain hole in the bottom. The water will run thru and it will be very easy to clean in future. It will also automaticly keep the soil around good for plants. There are plants you can have in pots in the water that will help keeping the water clean. Happy swimming

15 ft apart wow! my male and female kiwi came in the same pot and started off about 15 inches and now 12 years later covers about 30 feet of my south facing fence line, supported on horizontal training wires. Loving everything you do!

The pool looks amazing! And the corner bench/thrrone is epic! As temperatures climb, having a pool will be a Godsend! I would suggest keeping a foam floater in the pool - if small animals are attracted to the water by thirst and fall in, the floater will give them something to cling on to until you find them and can fish them out... Perhaps putting a small ladder inside the pool would be a similar safety precaution.

Cover the pool with a light proof material when not in use, to prevent it turning green with algae should also cut down on evaporation. Nice paint job.

Your creativity makes something ordinary extraordinary! I have lots of experience with pools. When choosing a pump for keeping the pool clean and clear consider salt water vs a chlorinated pool. Its cheaper in the long run and better for your skin. The pool is such a wonderful addiction to your estate!

To keep the water clear, you just need a submersible pump to circulate the water with an in line filter.

Good question about the bamboo roots, we have piled them in a corner of the farm, and as soon as we can we will clean the area and burn them. It’s a bit risky, but it’s a solution that we think is possibly the best. We will give you an update in a month or two. Thanks for asking.

I keep our hot tub beautifully clean with weekly drops of geranium oil. It really works. Of course, if the pool is heavily used with lots of sunscreen, etc it could be a challenge. A clarifier and oxidizer might be required from time to time

Hi guys awesome job! I think some tiles would be lovely and rounded tile steps to get in. Also a solar water heater for cooler days and solar floating lights and some nice torches for night swimming . Take some of that bamboo and build a tiki hut . Thank you for sharing the fun with us.

maybe add some kind of a bubbler to the pool to keep motion on the water surface in order to stop mosquitos from breeding - they like still water

I was watching a vlog on Mapperton Estate House in England and they wanted an eco friendly pool and they put in some water plants which keeps the water clear and algae free, I know its on a much larger scale but worth a watch. Great job done by all ... very resourceful on the arms of the sofa.. well done.
