    I was 10 years old when I first saw the Volvo 1880es. It was at the 1972 car show in the Greengate Mall in Greensburg PA. I have been a huge fan ever since. I kept the brochure for years.

      Only 8,000 made, who knows how few are left, I just bought one as I have not seen one for sale for 20 years (in my price category). I also have a Volvo C30, some say it is the modern version with the rear glass.
      I would like to modify the rear so its like a C30, curves down and pinched in. Massive work for curved surfaces.

    Unfortunately something broke during driving and I spit out all the oil and burned up the B20 engine in my ES. But I came to despise the 3 speed borg warner transmission anyway, so... I am in the process of installing a B230F engine and 4 speed auto transmission from an 80s 240. I very much look forward to having my ES back on the road, in about a year I think.

      C30 is the modern one you think about, could even be the mid 80:s 480. And yes, both these volvo models did that as a homage to this old original👍
      Just Google volvo 480
      Or volvo C30 and you'll see the resemblence about that rear window

    I decided on the IPD lowering springs. It's funny...I'm from Oregon orginally. And the 1800ES I bought was in Vancouver WA just a few minutes from IPD. I passed by IPD and saw the building from the freeway when I drove the 1800ES down to California. The car barely made the trip. It was leaking ATF fluid badly. But it made it to my storage lot.

    • @johnlarsen639
      @johnlarsen639 3 роки тому

      One thing that needs to be done along with the lowering is to adjust the panhard bar (shorten it). Left as it is, it will push the rear end off center (40mm lowering caused it to shift 1/2" on mine). If you look at the geometry involved, you wi see why that is. Especially with adding wider tires on top of the lowering. No need to ask me how I know...
      I would like to see pix of the end result! Please e-mail me if you don't mind - larsen.john@yahoo.com.

      Thanks for your post Benjamin - Yes, I believe they were S60 wheels. Had a certain name for the style which I cant recall. 17" rims. Spacers were used to push them to the edge. Helped eliminate what I felt was a toy car stance. My car sold on Bring-a-Trailer last fall. Many more pix there if you search on 1800ES you will see a ton of under priced Volvo shooting brakes, including mine.

    I think I got the wrong springs for my ES. I bought the same wheels you did and lowering springs but it's just sitting too low, by maybe 1-1.5 inches. Did you tell me earlier exactly what springs you bought for your project ?

  • @motoflyte
    @motoflyte 2 роки тому

    Mine is just a bit too low looking. I put the same wheels, tires, and 1 inch lowering springs on, but it just doesn't look right. I'm going to put the stock sprigs back on first. If that doesn't 'fix' the look then I'm goign to swap to different wheels.

      @@johnlarsen639 Excellent, Thank you. I really like the straight spoke wheels you had on your car. I found the same set remanufactured (whatever that means) on ebay for $800. My 1800ES is fine except for some rust on the passenger side lower outside bottom edge. It's not bad. Other than that the paint is really quite nice. I was dubious that the car seemingly only had 27k miles on it. But it really does look that way. An older man had saved it to restore it some day, but time caught up with him and he's too old now. I will finish it now.
