A conversation with WinGD: The importance of cylinder oils in two-stroke marine engines

The evolving nature of emission regulations in the marine industry is continuing to impact the composition and choice of marine fuels used by vessel operators. This, in turn, has required the development of new cylinder oils that are adapted to these fuels, while continuing to provide the required degree of engine protection. However, not all engines are the same and fuel choice will influence a cylinder oil’s characteristics, such as base number and detergency.
To help unravel the intricacies and identify the issues, Steve Walker, now-retired Global Marine Equipment Builder Manager, ExxonMobil has hosted three sessions with Dominik Schneiter, Vice President Research and Development, WinGD. They endeavour to uncover what vessel operators should look for in their cylinder oils and how best to maintain reliable engine operation. They also dig into how recent experience will influence our progress with future fuels.
