So the basic rundown of the bill and how it differs from Te tiriti is this: - - "The New Zealand Government has the right to govern all New Zealanders." - - What’s missing? The Māori text of Te Tiriti uses the term "kāwanatanga," which refers to governance but not in a way that overrides Māori tino rangatiratanga (absolute chieftainship). The English version, however, uses "sovereignty," which has historically caused confusion and breaches of the Treaty. This wording reinforces the idea of unilateral Crown authority, undermining the partnership and shared governance that Te Tiriti intended to establish. - - "The New Zealand Government will honour all New Zealanders in the chieftainship of their land and all their property." - - What’s missing? This interpretation significantly alters the meaning of tino rangatiratanga. In Te Tiriti, Māori retained absolute authority over their lands, homes, and treasures (taonga). The bill’s wording suggests the government will merely "honour" this authority, which is far weaker than the original guarantee. It diminishes the distinct rights promised to Māori and ignores the cultural and historical significance of taonga. - - "All New Zealanders are equal under the law with the same rights and duties." - - What’s missing? Equality is important, but this interpretation oversimplifies the nuanced promise of Te Tiriti. Article 3 guaranteed Māori the same rights as British subjects in addition to their existing rights as tangata whenua. The bill flattens this relationship, ignoring historical breaches and the inequities Māori have faced. True equity often requires tailored approaches to address systemic injustices, rather than a blanket approach that treats everyone as though the playing field is already level. - - The Bigger Issue: The bill centralizes the power to define Te Tiriti’s principles in the hands of politicians, excluding Māori voices from interpreting their own treaty rights. This undermines the spirit of Te Tiriti, which was founded on partnership, protection, and participation. By sidelining Māori input, the bill risks eroding the rights guaranteed under the Treaty and creating further division, rather than fostering the mutual respect and collaboration it

In her inaugural address, she also performed a Haka. If you notice the lady to her right in this video, she also appears in the video from 10 months ago behind her, however does not participate in the Haka. I think this demonstrates that the pride in culture is returning, and standing up to ridiculous policies is something everyone can get behind.
Keyboard warriors (me being one now) says it is cringe but probably wouldn't say it to them face to face. Get over it! They have got the right to protest like anyone else.
No, this is not powerful. This is hateful and disrespectful in this case. Maybe powerful in sports. It's their tradition. But this disrespectful behavior doesn't belong in parliament
@ who says it doesn’t belong in parliament? Parliament isn’t a magic place for super heroes, it’s a house of representatives. She represents the indigenous people of New Zealand and she protested in a traditional way. There’s no different than a filibuster or a walkout. Just because it isn’t western culture, it doesn’t mean it’s wrong
The Maori tribe deserves to keep their rights to the land they helped cultivate. The spread of information brought by colonizers does not negate that right. The internet existing and being used does not negate that right. Imagine saying that the invention of the gas mask, done by a black person, means that you should give up your rights to the land your family has lived on for generations, and you shouldnt use a gas mask when we throw mustard gas at your home. Acknowledging the harm colonizers did and are doing, does not suddenly negate a person's right to use something they made. It might warrant a boycott, but that is a decision that is made in order to apply pressure to a group, in protest. Nor does any removal of those colonizers from their land (which as far as I know, isnt even what is being debated in this meeting) mean they will regress. Native American tribes use the internet and mostly hold their more traditional methods and stories as.... just that. Tradition. Symbolic of their past. A connection to their culture that they want to bring with them. Stripping them of that culture does not make them "civilized", it makes them isolated from their past. And only abusers want to isolate you. The Haka is a dance and song, meant to be representative of the power that the performers hold and depending on the song, empower the listener and invite them to join. It does seem uncivilized to us because our culture favors putting you down for "causing a scene", which has empowered manipulators for centuries. The Haka is a demand to be heard. And now a peaceful but powerful and intimidating form of protest. And no, the Haka is not always a war cry. One of my favorite Hakas Ive seen is one where a father is trying to encourage his son, as he makes the transition from boyhood to becoming a man. Some are used as a respectful greeting to visiting leaders as a way of saying "we are strong and we will defend you." The Haka is a form of performance. Im not Maori, so forgive me if I have a few things wrong, but this is what Ive gathered from viewing various Hakas and listening to Maori people discussing it and it's history.
Just because someone calls it "bigotry" doesn't make it so. When asked for evidence, no details come forth, only vague assertions. That's not evidence, it's immaturity.
What bigotry? The legislation they oppose is for equal rights. They oppose it because the Maori have been essentially above everyone else in New Zealand for a while now, and they don't want to lose their position of power.
This just reminded me of Shaheed Bhagat Singh chanting 'Inquilaab Zindabaad' in the Delhi Central Legislative Assembly on 8th April 1929 against the British colonialists. Goosebumps 🔥

White people shouting and screaming, internet: so rude Maori people shouting and screaming, internet: ooh powerful Bunch of cultural double standards Edit: no I'm not white
Except they where not merely shouting but performing. Shouting is meant to drown the opposition voice. Performing is meant to send a message. Watch it with subtitles.
@Archontasil since when did they do it 'everytime'? It was a protest to send a message, not the usual course of action. She did it once before in her inaugural speech for the same reason.
It's sad seeing right wingers be so harsh about this considering that this protest is because the Maori are being subjected to the same insanity that the Europeans are only just now hinting at standing up against. All the colonised people who understand world history know the methods used to destroy their nations are methods that european powers used on their own people too, and we should be allied with people who have retained their national identity despite the globalisation and corporatisation of every land.
After seeing this I needed to read about the issue. Sorry, but the treaty needs to be scrapped and something needs to be drafted to replace it. The Treaty of Waitangi was signed in 1840 with two different versions, an English version and a Maori version. I guess translation wasn't great, because some very important wording differs and has been the source of contention for ages. The English version outlines that the Maori were ceding their sovereignty, but when they translated it the wording became unclear and many people claim that the Maori did not understand that they were ceding their Sovereignty based on the wording. Beyond that, the treaty was violated many times until the 1970's when a committee was setup to uphold the treaty and investigate past violations (I think, I'm unclear on whether people got any land back). In the meantime, many opponents to the treaty say that there is an industry of Maori's using the treaty to make false claims and seek compensation. In the 90's the government attempted to make the treaty part of the countries bill of rights but it was opposed...by the Maori, who saw it as an attempt to later alter and eradicate the treaty. This sounds like New Zealand's version of America's "Roe v Wade". A poorly made, shaky piece of legislature that has an important role but is not solid enough and is constantly challenged. It's like having a table with one leg that's short than the others.
Well, the opinion of the natives is much more important, always, since they are the only ones with ownership and rights to that land since ancient times. And that should apply to the US, Australia, NZ, etc.

The Maori tribe must not be displaced by European colonialists
Without European “colonists” Māori will return to Stone Age pretty fast
If they were happy that way, let them. They didn't ask to be modernized. You talk like the Maori colonized themselves. @@yurimolotov3355
@@yurimolotov3355As always , it's always what you colonizers think 😂😂. Lol. Grow up mate , this world doesn't revolve around europe or US .
He says over the computer/internet invented by and maintained by European colonialists.
Any rational person would support a person who is standing up against bigotry.
This is not bigotry
Their country was stolen from them
Just because someone calls it "bigotry" doesn't make it so.
Last time I saw someone do this , they ended up losing a basketball game by 50 points.
