    "The Graduate" has an amazing soundtrack, thanks to Simon and Garfunkel. The closing image, of the couple realising that they don't know what to do next, while "Sound of Silence" plays, is truly haunting.

    John Travolta on the lit dance floor in Saturday Night Fever with the Bee Gees playing is like the ultimate stylised 70's aesthetic. It's the first thing that I think of for that era's "look." I love it and the film.
    Seeing all these classic films and being reminded of their soundtracks just remind me why I love the art form of cinema so much. Thanks, MsMojo!

    You might be forgiven for mistaking "Saturday Night Fever" for being a corny film where John Travolta dances to the Bee Gees, and nothing else happens. In actuality, it's a raw, gritty drama, where the protagonist realises just how shallow his disco lifestyle really is.

    • @azohundred1353
      @azohundred1353 7 днів тому +7

      Yeah, I only knew it for the dance/disco aesthetic for years which I still do love the look of, it's pure 70's pop art essentially, then when I saw the film as a whole I was blown away. It had far more in common with Martin Scorsese's film Mean Streets than the type of dance movie I was expecting. I loved it even more than I thought I would.

    • @edreid7872
      @edreid7872 7 днів тому +6

      Never thought it was a corny disco flick.. Sure the song and dance numbers are iconic, but combined, it makes up about 20 minutes of the film.. It's the story that jumped at me, and growing up in Brooklyn, not far from where it took place, I related to every moment..the language and violence were intense…

    This is a hard one as a lot of these "soundtracks" were not created for the movie, but were established hits on their own. I'll give you Saturday Night Fever, Grease, and The Graduate as they MADE hits, as well as Shaft, though it is more just the theme more than the soundtrack. But Easy Rider and even American Graffiti used POPULAR songs to make their soundtrack memorable. These were not written FOR the movie.

    Always hated west side story.. ( comes from being in high school and for 3 years, we did reports on that movie's "relevance" once in each of those years.. Never cared for it to begin with, and having to re-watch it repeatedly just made it worse in my eyes. )
    **MY** favorite pics off this list are undoubtedly the Grease and Saturday Night Fever soundtracks!!
    ( I LOVE LOVE the idea that the brains behind the bit of selling the soundtrack album before the movie hit the theaters, the producers thought it wouldn't be worth beans..
    .. they were crying and kicking themselves as the one with the rights was walking to the bank making MULTIPLE trips with SUITCASES Full of the ol Cash! MILLIONS of copies sold, so when the movie DID come out.. it EXPLODED like nothing that had yet been seen!)

    First, these are all great films with great soundtracks, but I disagree with their conclusions. The greatest classic film with the greatest soundtrack, and I will die on this @#@%$% hill, is THE MUPPET MOVIE. C'mon, The Rainbow Connection! And I defy you to dismiss Can You Picture That as the most perfect rock song EVER!!! If you weren't close to tears during I'm Going To Back There Someday, well then, my friend, I cannot tell you what is moving your blood around, because it ain't a heart. I hope That Something Better Comes Along is pure comedy gold and an absolute truth bomb. Sinatra missed a trick by not including that on his Duets album. You will never again hear a more moving love song from a pig to a frog than Never Before. From start to finish, this soundtrack outshines all the others by farthest and I chastise MOJO for not recognizing this immediately. Shame on you!!!

    And WM “fumbles” (to say it very nicely) again by putting OSTs nobody remembers (for a reason) like Shaft while leaving out soundtrack masterpieces like The Wizard of Oz, Top Gun, Rocky 4, Snowwhite and the seven dwarves, Dirty Dancing, Mary Poppins, Ladyhawke and Breakfast at Tiffany - and yes, I know some of these movies aren’t “classic/old Hollywood” and are from the 1980s, but they’re all _classics_ and that decade is close to become "old Hollywood" too by now.
