Billboards reading ‘Alaska is Ours’ have been spotted in Russia's Krasnoyarsk city and the sign has gone viral on social media. The sign was spotted a day after Putin’s ally, Vyacheslav Volodin, threatened to ‘take back’ Alaska in response to US sanctions. In March, Russian State Duma member Oleg Matveychev also called on the Kremlin to reclaim Alaska. After Ukraine, US and Russia to clash over Alaska?

Yeah, but invading the Ukraine and invading the United States are two entirely different ordeals. The United States has the largest by tonnage navy in the world with the furthest reach of any navy, the largest as well as most technologically advanced air force in the world, the third largest standing army in the world and the second largest nuclear stockpile in the world with an economy to support it and allies to supplement it.
Ukraine is part of no alliance treaties, had outdated equipment, an extremely weak economy and only had the benefits of a large standing army that unfortunately has little to no air force capable of supporting it. Invading one is not like the other.

I'm British and the story I was told about Alaska was that the British wanted it. The Russian Empire didn't want a direct border with the British Empire so they sold it the US which at that time they saw as a small unimportant state that could serve as buffer state between the two big empires of Britain and Russia. Same in central Asia where Afghanistan was created as a buffer state between British and Russian Empires.

Nah, it was Hazar Ministers in Russia that forged that deal aganst Russian interest. Russians would much rather have that land in hands of Native Americans than European colonizers.
It was sold for a few reasons and that was one of them. But to this day, Alaska remains very wild. It can be a miserable terraine and as impossible to take like it would be taking on grabbing Siberian territory. It just isn't possible. They still alot of parts of Alaska that use dog sleds. Can't really just roll in and take it. Maybe the thinking is that there isn't much population that Russia could just paddle over. But that will not be how it will go down. There usually is more than one reason.
They also sold it because they were in debt after the Crimean War.
The Russians weren't "conned out of Alaska" in 1867. Emperor Alexander II tried to sell it to the British first but the British didn't want it. The Americans were not exactly over the Moon about buying it and called it Seward's Folly because the only apparent wealth it had ever had was fur and that had all gone by then. It was nearly 40 years before they found the gold!

@@KnowerofThings Well no, Ukraine simply wanted to join NATO and be a democratic country and Russia thinks that Ukraine is still part of it so they want it back and in their minds NATO has broke their promise to not move any further east and Russia wanted a neutral country to act as a barrier to separate them from the west to avoid conflicts but if Ukraine joins NATO then there would not be any barrier between them so they invaded to put a puppet state in place but their attack on the capital failed so they now are just focusing on the east of Ukraine in the Donbas region to control that area as a neutral ground to separate them from NATO for security.

Alaska was purchased legally from Russia on March 30, 1867 for about $7 million dollars. Negotiated by Secy. of State William Seward and Russian Ambassador Edouard Stoeckl. It belongs to the United States without doubt or reservation. Now, if Mr. Putin is just blowing off steam in a heated moment, that's understandable. But if he seriously is considering making a run at Alaska, I would ponder that idea most closely if I were him.

There is no possible scenario where Russia could conquer Alaska. Even if their conventional military was stronger, USA's policy on use of nuclear weapons clearly says that they have no problem using them to defend their territory, or the territory of their allies. So even if the Russian military could defeat the US military and invade Alaska, they'd drive right into the blast radius of a tactical nuke. And if they want to escalate things, both countries would use their strategic nukes against each other's cities and they still wouldn't conquer Alaska because we'd all just be dead. So either both countries would destroy each other or Russia just wouldn't attempt something so stupid.

No country could successfully invade the United States unless they killed off most of the people with nuclear attacks, and any country who tried that would get it right back with superior weapons, so they'd have nothing left to fight with themselves. If the war didn't go nuclear, then Russia would lose big because of their small population and their lack of industrial capacity. Russia's GDP is 1.48 Trillion. The US GDP is over 20 Trillion. And since we're a well armed population, any foreign invader would find a gun behind every blade of grass.

Russia thought it would take Ukraine in less then a month and got embarrassed. They gotta do something to save face. They don't even have control of the airspace that they're waging war in. The US for example with both Iraq and Afghanistan had that and took both countries and lost only 7,000 in a span of 20 years. Mind you it took the US one month to take Iraq with a loss of 137 men. Russia lost over 35,000 in four months and is doing worse then when they invaded Afghanistan.
