The NACS adapter for my Bolt EUV just arrived this afternoon! Don’t know if you saw but we also just bought a Nissan Ariya, so I’m glad it’s getting access soon too
I did, I looked long & hard at one last month. It is a very nice car at prices that are compelling. Enjoy! Shouldn’t be long for SC access. I bet we’ll b4 xmas. Stay safe
Good video thanks. I was going to point out the ID.4 location, too, but someone beat me to it. It should be noted that the Kia EV3 has it in the front right, another good location that also has the benefit of shutting up the curb charging crowd. The EV3 has also stepped down to 400 volts to better match up to the Tesla V3 and (pseudo) V4 charging stalls. I recently added CCS support to my old Tesla and am looking forward to trying out some third-party providers once they start rolling out NACS connectors at scale.
@ I think they r going in order of who signed up. You call roll the headlines back to see who announced after Volvo. Looks like I was wrong. MB is next in line I think
@ that sucks. I don’t think Tesla and BMW have much love for each other to begin with. Plus my BMW port is all wrong. By the time BMW gets access, I think it might be a non-event and overcome by all of the other options (PFJ, MB, Circle K, and…Ionna!)
As an owner of a XC40 Recharge, I was super happy to hear about this but whenI called my local dealer to find they were unaware of this and asked I call back next year for the adapter....wth. I'd prefer a Volvo branded adapter but if they make it hard.
Sounds like a tough one. Sorry you had blowback. Hopefully, after the 74th call or something, they will start to figure it out. Stay safe & thx for watching.
Not much of a surprise that a dealership is unaware of this. They are typically unaware of many things that you would think they would know. The Volvo branded adpater is the same one made by Tesla that Ford, GM, and Rivian got. If you're able to get one from them, that would be nice. Otherwise, the A2Z adapter is one of the best off brand ones to get and are easy to obtain. Stay away from the definite knock offs you find online.
@Wasabi9111 Me as well. I heard through SM too and had to go look up on google. I got a PR release on a Volvo web site. No email. Nothing on their SM blitz. Gee wiz.
Good news - Walter. Just one question - what is the correct location for the charge port on a vehicle in 2024? I am not so sure the tesla has the correct location either.
I would have to defer to an answer often given by Alex on E For Electric, which is it depends. Kinda like asking who is the right person for you to date. We have a charger on the wall of our garage. We find it works well to have the car that is charging to park with the charge port door next to the charger. This is different and requires either back in or pulling nose in. What is your preference? I am a back in kinda guy. I actually like to back into my charging stalls too. Other people like to pull nose in. It is really a preference thing, I believe. In the bigger picture, the location of the chargeport door has little weight on purchase decisions so makers can decide what works for their design and customers can vote with their dollars.
I think rear is appropriate in the current day as you will either back in, or back out of the stall, and it is easier to back in in most cases. The key for me is that you do not need to worry about cross traffic when backing in. There was one SC I abandoned the attempt to use due to high traffic in front of the SC stalls. Once we have mostly pull-through style stalls, charge port location will be less of an issue.
Thank you. I was thinking the same thing. I am pretty sure I will be switching my membership to the TesSC and if so, I will be charging there quite a bit. If so, I should be able to capture a charging curve at some point in the future. Thx for watching and the nice comment.
I have a Ford Mustang Mach-E, and the adapter is not the limiting factor for my car. Nor are the chargers themselves. Also, currently, there are V4 dispensers, but the cabinets are still V3, so limited to 250 KW. This is still more than I can receive. The only real advantage of V4 dispensers is the location and length of the cables. On that SC report with 4 non-Tesla blocking access to the remaining 4 stalls, this should be a rare occurrence. Many SC have room to the right, and non-Tesla should try to use adjacent stalls to minimize the unusable stalls that are blocked.
how do you change the charging view from amps to KW? I like seeing amps to make sure I'm regulating the speed on different chargers but would be cool to see KW info.
I tried 2 x super chargers today and both would not work on my xc40. Anything I’m missing? I did use the Tesla app to find and start charging. Both said unauthorized vehicle and errored out 😢
Walter, was enjoying your video up to the last 3 sec. “We have the charge port in the right place” 😢 I really think that you need to watch “Star-Belly Sneetches” 😂
Walter actually I re-listened to that section and not only do you say Volvo doesn’t have it in the wrong place. You also say we have it in the right place. You did not specify Tesla supercharger network in that sentence. I understand that was the context. But look at even the cyber truck has the port pulled back to the fender, causing the cord to be stretched and requiring Tesla to go through and pull out the bollards in front of their chargers. The chords are too short. No doubt a combination of cost savings and not having clutter on the ground or working out cord retraction systems. I’m happy that people can deal with that and that some auto manufacturers actually position the port for that convenience. I will likely never take my EV to a Tsc, but that’s ok.
I know its early days for Volvo and the SC network. When selecting your preferred networks on the vehicle. If you select more than one network will it route based on distance to next charger or will it route based on lowest cost?
Thanks Walter. Do you think being able to fit into one spot will influence your decision going forward on whether you take the Volvo or Cadillac on road trips?
@ hmmm. Well, I don’t have much love for EVgo EXCEPT for PFJ. I haven’t found their stations in unattended parking lots to be nearly as reliable. (I have A LOT of love for EVgo at PFJ).

Yay! Happy for you, Walter. Now you could use authorized Superchargers for both your EVs! I'm curious to see when Hyundai/Kia/Genesis will gain access, since they've already started building 2025 Ioniq 5 models with a J3400 port in their new factory in Georgia. I also have an A2Z Pro adapter for when and if that happens. At those v.4 Superchargers, my Ioniq 5 shouldn't have a problem with plugging in, even though the port is on the opposite side, because the cable is connected on that same side.
It is a happy day. I am thinking I will sw from EVgo to TesSC for my membership. I was looking at the map and they are everywhere I need to be. Thx for watching.
Watler, you should do a quick video of you charging your Volvo using your GM adapter for your Cadillac. They're all the same adapters. I think a lot of people are confused especially given there's no markings on the Tesla produced adapters they're making for all the other brands as probably outlined in their agreement. It might be months before people will get their Volvo official adapter so having the ability to borrow from somebody else with a Ford, Gm , or Rivisn adapter could be useful. Just ordered my A2Z.
I don't have one. Since I already spent $200 on the A2Z, I was waiting to see if Volvo was going to give free ones. Now that I know they aren't, I am not sure what I will do. I may just live with one for now. Good point though.
Actually, Tesla has the charge port in the most convenient location. The same as polestar. If you think about it, this is the least amount of walking that you need to do. You open up your driver door and you just take two steps back, plug it in and go back in. If it was on the other side, you’d have to go all around the car and if it was in front, you’d have to go around your door so this location actually does make the most sense from a convenience standpoint, which is what Tesla is all about.
Yes. For DCFC you are correct. Most people charge L2 at home, so the steps should be thought of in that use case. If I back into a garage and my charger is on the wall, I now have my chargeport in the wrong location. If I nose in, I need to put the charger near my garage door to be close. I find for L2 garage charging, passenger side is better.
