    The resource discussion. I've only sunk 10 hours into the game but my experience with resources is the opposite to what is in the video. I'm not running out of healing resources or whatever, I'm overloaded with mushrooms, crabs, rat meat etc.
    The vendors sell food recipes and if you have multiple then you can craft 20 mushroom soups, 20 fish on a stick, 20 Currys etc and never run out of healing items but still have the ingredients to make these again at a fire.
    I used the Ichor from the first boss to increase my carry space for ingredients which helped immensley.
    It is also worth noting that stacks don't combine properly so you can have 12 mushroom soups in one stack and 7 in another but can't combine them together. Hopefully they'll fix that.

      22 hours deep here and completed the main story and on to the early access end game.
      I agree with you, generally have tons of food and if I ever get close to running out while out exploring I can usually just craft more from all the resources I picked up at the next campfire.
      Fixing the stack combination thing along with making stacks larger would definitely also help. I do somewhat agree that managing limited inventory slots can get frustrating though, but increasing capacity with ichor and placing excess items into chests at home help once you're in the mid game.
      The game is definitely more Diablo-like FIRST, and a souls-like second.

      Yep totally agree, healing items haven’t been an issue for me either. That being said I think they could add double inventory slots (start with double and ichor gives double is currently does) and it’d be in a good spot. The availability of resources is fine but inventory management can get annoying.

      Agreed, heals weren’t the problem. They did add to the problem however, because they took up inventory spots needed for base upgrades. They just increased the stack allowance in hotfix 3 which very much helped. I think allowing you to get 1 house with 3-ish chests inside earlier than finishing the sewer would also help further.

    I don’t really understand this grind for meals complaint, the map is littered with mushrooms and plants and the starting meal is given to you in the prologue. I mean yes a flask system of some kind would have arguably been better but grinding for food just doesn’t seem like a real issue to me, grinding for clay on the other hand that is crazy. I had to make two other realms and after probably 50hrs I now have the town fully upgraded

    im ngl i have to disagree, i really enjoy these survival mechanics. they feel very balanced since you get the recipe for a stew that heals you right at the start of the game, you can craft that with ingredients you find everywhere at the start of the game and as you progress, and you can just buy the ingredients/actual meal once money isn't an issue from a chef that you can find very early ononce money isn't an issue for you after 2 or 3 areas

    As a Souls Vet, I love the game and agree with everything you say. My suggestion is that they allow an infinite inventory on the person, but allow stacks to only hit a certain number before you’d have to put them in a storage box. And then allow up to two main spots you’d like to fast travel between rather than just one.

    This is an early access game with very little content compared to what it will be in the end.
    Hiw are you running out if redources? They are literarily everywhere and you get so much you run out of space until you get access to the stash chest.
    This game’s problems will be tweaked given most people have the same issues so itll turn out fine if they listen.

  • @Morden97
    @Morden97 5 місяців тому +14

    I like the survival mechanics, gathering, building the town and all of that. They just need to apply some QoL features to streamline that part, stuff like inventory space, the possibility of using your materials from your stash, larger stash space, etc. Stacks should also be larger.
    I feel this game can be a true standout, and I think going early access was a great decision by them.
    As for some of your complaints:
    - I've had virtually no issues with climbing ledges. I don't understand this one since I feel it's pretty clear which walls are climbable and which aren't and after a bit you get used to the height of objects your character can vault into. There's just one thing I think needs a fix, and that's the auto jumping from ledges while running. This happens because there isn't a dedicated jump button and instead your character jumps when running to a ledge, so that can cause some accidents, especially when you're trying to climb down a ledge. For now the solution is to approach walking instead of running, but that needs a change.
    - About resources: I think your problem is you're just not picking up enough stuff. I've had very little issue with this and basically the only thing I had to actually buy was a bunch of artemisia plants bc those aren't so common and they're required for all food, but shrooms, crabs, apples, meat, etc are quite common, and they respawn rather frequently. I've never had to grind for food materials. Not even once. The only thing I've had to "farm" is construction materials, but that's not really required, you don't HAVE to engage with that system, I just hope inventory management is improved bc that's an actual problem.
    I honestly believe 80% of the issues you described with the game would be solved if you just gathered stuff while advancing the story. I bet you don't pick up most stuff and instead go and buy stuff from town, which is indeed a waste of money that you need for other things.

    • @KrspySauce
      @KrspySauce 5 місяців тому

      FYI, if you come to a ledge that you want to climb down, just press “Y” or “triangle.” Your character will move down without you having to walk around the edge hoping that he/she grabs it eventually.

    Great video, Zio. I agree with all points made .
    This is why FromSoftware usually keeps one basic healing item that replenishes upon rest/death. Something as simple as a healing flask with charges takes pressure off of the necessity of tedium that comes with item farming in these games. Since 2011 the one time they deviated from this was in Bloodborne, and the healing vial system was met with plenty of fair criticism.
    No matter the nuances of an ARPG, there is a very important distinction that can make or break a title. Players don't want to be forced to grind for items (healing, durability, required levels), they want to CHOOSE to grind for items (gear, abilities, power).

    The best experience in such games is when you play them completely blind and try things out for yourself to see how something works. People who look at guides or secret paths destroy the potential fun of the game. The problem is that many people think that the game is most fun if you play the meta route. That's why I always play all single player games completely blind and look for the best solution in the game. Only when I've finished playing the game do I watch videos about the game.
    love the sound in the game and I also enjoy it more than the Elden Ring DLC. I hope the content is expanded and the story is solid. I also like the intelligent map design with hidden places and paths. The fights feel good too, but I would recommend playing with the controller even if you're not a controller player. I think it's good that you can't just heal yourself everywhere. I can only recommend everyone to buy it, it's definitely worth the money. Different systems that you can combine are definitely something new.

  • @undefinedvariable8085
    @undefinedvariable8085 5 місяців тому

    You know, it just occurred to me, the way you described that Focus system would probably be the best way to address the spammable nature of weapon skills/AoWs in Elden Ring that trivialise pve and grossly unbalance pvp.
    You'd have another "skill bar" (like fp but separate) that replenishes on attack, encouraging more aggressive play, sure, but most importantly encouraging more balanced engagement. "Balanced" here referring to standard attack movesets (bleed will still have to be nerfed because you know that'll just move in to fill the power vacuum).
    This "skill bar" would also fill up when blocking attacks and when taking damage. The replenish hierarchy would look like this: attack > block > take damage. When you're health is at some floor (set with by absolute number so that HP difference doesn't matter) you'll replenish that bar faster than even attacking (last stand sort of mechanic). Some skills would be exempt, like parries, but parries with effects (i.e. golden parry) would still apply (functions like standard FP requirements in this case). Maybe you could still allow players to perform their weapon skills without the focus points required but at a far reduced efficacy.
    Caster builds replenish this bar in the same way but weaker spells/incants build it up significantly, powerful spells/incants negligibly or hardly at all (encouraging a more balanced spell/incant loadout). Now we just got find ways to incentivise caster builds to use these focus points, e.g. give their catalysts (staffs/seals) a skill that's actually useful.
    Scaling won't be an issue either because you could easily programmatically tune the focus points an attack replenishes your skill bar with by how powerful it is, so if it's too powerful, maybe due to excessive buff stacking or other broken/exploitative/gimmicky builds, the numbers (focus points) are passed through a calculation function that makes the necessary adjustments relative to the damage output. I.e. if you're already OP you're not going to get easy access to more OP weapon skills.

    The thing a lot of souls-likes don't quite grasp are the nuances which makes SoulsBornes balanced, all the variables are interconnected. i find that when a variable is changed for the sake of making a souls-like distinctive (eg. no rest heals), this has a domino effect on every other variable/

    • @HeevaEgo
      @HeevaEgo 5 місяців тому

      It depends on how well interconnected the systems of a soulslike is. If a soulslike has (e.g.) a clear-cut expository story, but a hardcore soulslike gameplay, then they’re more at liberty to play with or change certain aspects of a game’s story/gameplay because those aspects wouldn’t be intruding on one another like they would in a Fromsoft souls game

      It's balanced in wicked though. Though there is no estus there is an overabundance of food ingredients in the world, you can even buy multiple recipes and have multiple stacks of healing items. The fact that you have a cooldown on the food makes it so that you can't spam it. If you want an estus so badly you can put a heal rune on your weapon which is available after the first boss. Having so much food already makes the game easy, refilling health on checkpoints or estus flasks would only ruin the game balance.

    I'm still excited for this one, but I'm definitely waiting on some updates, or the full release.
    It's interesting though, how so many companies have been inspired by FromSoftware to add extra punishment on top of death, but they seemingly don't always look at the why or the consequences. So while losing a pile of souls might inspire you to try again on the path you just traveled, here it seems like dying is encouraging you do head back and repair/restock.
    The repair thing is the complaint I've heard most often, and it does sound frustrating. The other big complaint I've heard is on the control end, where I guess multiple actions, such as dashing, dodging, and jumping are mapped to the same button? It's a bit sad to hear, since the Ori games have really smooth controls.

    The fact that people are talking about it is a major plus in my view. Means that there's some crucial element to the formula that people want to experience and they dislike how the elements they don't like clash with those they do like.
    The devs are also partly aiming for eventual endgame loops and co-op/pvp, which is something we can't say for Souls in general. This can turn out pretty great.

  • @phrozac

    Healing isn't a problem. I have 4 characters across over 100 hrs of play and scarcity of healing became a non-issue long ago. Early on it can be tense but after the starting area, you'll pick up so many recipes and ingredients that you'll always have some healing on hand. But you can heal through your gear as well. Healing on damage dealt is a common affix. There are entire builds based on that alone.
    But really, the idea behind not simply granting you free healing like an Estus Flask for example, is that it raises the stakes and encourages skilled play. To not get hit. Enemies also take forever to respawn, so there's plenty of time to gather supplies as you traverse the world. The game has crafting too, and you'll be hovering up crafting supplies along with healing ingredients. All these systems work together and have a reason for being. Remove one and it directly impacts another.
    I think as it is right now, the balance feels good. It feels like you're on an adventure and life and death hangs on your ability to come prepared and fight well.

    The never-ending loop of being out of food resources disappears entirely around level 15. Once you have a house to store stuff in and have got your favorite weapon to at least tier 2, you'll start to bypass herbs and ingredients because you don't need them anymore. Also be sure to give the cursed armor a try. Some of the cursed armor drops have a slow health regeneration on them (usually at the cost of max health), which drastically reduces your need to waste your food. I'm level 23 now and the only loop I find myself in is to get spruce wood and clay to max out all my vendors to tier 3. My favorite weapon is the still the Claymore despite a few compatible legendary drops. I've kept upgrading it (so far it has the best weapon art for my strength + intelligence build). I'm currently waiting on a second bear paw to bring the Claymore into tier 3.

    As it stands, most people will not enjoy this game. They'll encounter a spot of difficulty, and that will vary by person, where they will use up all of their durability and all of their healing items making attempts and then they'll quit. Those that encounter it early will refund the game, and those who encounter it later will just leave negative reviews.
    Better itemization will alleviate the healing problems, as they could include more things like healing on hit, healing per second, and make checkpoints give healing.
    Food should also be an estus flask. The survival crafting should be to scour materials to make your estus heal for more. This would alleviate the problem of running out of food attempting challenging bosses. No one is going to go farm more materials between boss attempts, there are other games that we can play.
    As for durability, repair is fine but the problem is there will be some people who brick their equipment before reaching Sacra. Or they'll brick their character by running out of money to repair.
    Broken equipment should be usable, to allow us to farm the gold to repair it. Perhaps just disabling our runes, gems and magic properties until we do so would be better.

    You're way overblowing the food thing. I've been playing for 20 hours and never ran out of food. I've got like 40 heals. There are ingredients EVERYWHERE! You're wrong about the second two areas being overleveled too. One is overleveled and one is not. The sewer is a felt hard but fair as a first dungeon. Also the durability is barely noticeable. I've never had my game play loop broken, so maybe your problem is trying to play it too quickly. Also this is early access, so they've already toned down durability. If you don't like any survival mechanics you might not like them, but they are very very soft in terms if how they affect game play. I've never died due to lack of heals and never had a weapon or tool break or ran out of money to repair them... so maybe people are playing it wrong.

The unintentional deaths just due to exploring is painful though - to the point where I want to save the game for later. It’s beta though…and Moon is a great studio. Try too meet the game more on its terms. Of course you are souls channel, but when game tries to do something else/new, you should try to understand the vision of developers, not your vision for the game. It's like with the Lies of P review. In my opinion, it is on par, and better in many areas than many of From Soft games (not level desing of course), and these are my favourites all the way from dark souls, Bloodborne up to Sekiro and Elden Ring. Lies of P mechanics synergize so well, when you use them optimally. All the little mechanics, even the reparing of the weapon add something to the combat. The game is not tedious at all, you just need to take your time, and learn with it, like with Sekiro. I hesitated to Buy Lies of P after your review. If I didn't I would miss out on one of the best game I ever played, my 2nd or 3rd soulslike including Froms games. So I am a bit skeptical when you lean heavy into what the game should be in your opinion. I think the criticism can be valid, but I really do respect your opinion, and just recently realised, that our tastes may differ more, than I expected. In that sense, I would like you to state more, what is really your opinion, and where the game objectively is not up to the standards of the vision of the developers. I haven't played it, mind you, I just have this suspicion, that you are not meeting the game on its own terms because of the Lies of P, and Lords of the Fallen videos, and your assesment in this one. In any case, I love your videos, just please try to understand, where I am coming from. And I don't accept the „its all subjective“ opinion. Some things in art/gaming can be objectively assessed if you have mutually agreed upon standards. And these should stem from what I mentioned before, how the game whats you, the player to feel. Then some universal standards like variety in combat, level design is good ect.

    -Ledges are pretty simple to tell if they can be climbed or not. This comes down to not paying attention to what you’ve climbed and what your tried to climb in the past but couldn’t.
    -you should have an abundance of resources to craft healing items. They are EVERYWHERE on the map. I do agree that that they need to expand the stash space.
    -the game isn’t only supposed to be a souls-like. I think you are looking at the game too narrowly and not the overall experience.

Can handle one on one with the enemies but two enemies and suddenly I'm getting brutally murdered before I even know what's happening.
    I know people are gonna say 'Git Gurd!!" and all, but thing is, I'm trying! Love the designs of souls game but most of the gameplay itself, I'm sadly not used to. @@Oryyyt Of course feedback has to be given by players and taken seriously by devs. However nobody who purchased this product and has some common sense, should expect it to be without flaws/finished/complete/perfected as it is made very clear by its early access status to be still in dev. critique and constructive criticism - yes, please. thats the purpose of early access. but more serious complaints that devs have failed the customers or taken money through false advertisement without actually delivering a miracle game - less so. I'm sure there are people who go to such extremes of angry complaints, maybe even threats. there is always these guys...

      @@TheScratcherStudios Ziostorm wasn’t insinuating any of that in his early access review. He simply stated the issues he had with the game, and hope that the devs iron them out by the time the full game comes out.
      He treated it as an early access review, as he should

      @@TheScratcherStudios Yeahh I agree with you there. The toxicity, and entitlement can get pretty brutal out there. But I'm sure game devs expect that kind of thing at this point. Not losing heart over actual idiots and turning it around to end in praise and a solid player base would prolly make it more than worthwhile I believe.

      @@HeevaEgo If one would listen to this video without knowing its an early access game, it sounds like a quite disappointed review of a "fully released" title. in order not to accidentally create a mob of angry teens who start spreading hate online, it might have been prudent to really strongly emphasize this having JUST released as an early access title in the very beginning. basically not even being an alpha build. just for those who blow easily. (have i been on the net for too long and became a cynical geezer without hope of humanity?...maybe...)

    Yeah I can't relate. Not having any of these issues. In fact I have more food than I know what to do with. I also didn't try to brute force my way into the higher level areas right after getting into Sacrament, so that might be your issue. Only thing they may want to change is inventory space, but it really hasn't been that bad for me personally. I'm really enjoying the game, and I'd rather them not make it too easy. For being a fan of souls games, one would think you'd be down for a challenge. It's not unfair by any means, so this take is confusing to me. They are definitely onto something with this game, and it is brand new to early access. I don't understand why so many people are coming down so hard on it. Very weird.
