This feature works really great, it saves a lot of fuel. It makes the car more silky smooth to drive by softening the accelerator, without compromising much acceleration and speed.

I always drive in manual mode with start/stop off otherwise the engine keeps turning off dozens of time during a short city trip, many times only for seconds or even less. This will probably affect the engine as temperature variations caused stress to the components especially the turbo-compressor unit. In the D mode it keeps the rpm too low and that also can potentially lead to carbon buildup, it causes much more frequent gear changes. You often need to adjust your speed according to the traffic quickly and being in a high gear the car has no power and the engine lugging for a second then it downshifts. Sport mode is a bit better but not good enough. Only when you pull the lever to the left for manual it starts to shift well by itself until you press the paddle shifters when it switches to manual .
If you drive as if you had a 40hp car then the engine behaves better but the rpm is still very low and you won’t make many miles before carbon will build up or other problems like increased wear because of low oil pressure and poor lubrication.
Brake energy regen is fine and should save some fuel.

I've owned three X5's and three other BMWs. Their new prices are outrageous. The ML550 will be in the garage in March.

I take it Impulsora is referring to the engine shutoff and restart part of the feature, it could be irritating, especially if you're only stopped for an extremely short interval

The money saved using eco-mode is wasted when you have to repair that money pit.

ruizhernandeztrustfi all premium cars have high fuel costs due to premium gas and high cost to repair because of high part costs...cant afford to own a car then dont buy it. stick to your toyota

      Mac Smith
      Mr. Smith
Seems like you're a little confused in your facts. I'll try to explain the best I can. First off all, thanks for replying back without insult me. (that means you're a kind and reasonable guy) Let's discuss. :-)
1: In your 2 previous comments you're making emphasis that fancy cars (in this case BMW) is not for poor people, that's simple not true. In case you didn't know there's at least two instruments people use to buy a car one is FINANCING and the other is LOANING. If you have a steady job and good credit you can afford the car you want. You don't need to buy it cash.
2: You failed to comprehend what I wrote in my original comment (because you got furious when I said something negative about your beloved brand, and you felt the impulse to flip shit over me) What I meant in my original comment is for example, let's say you saved $125 in gas using eco-mode in 4 years using the system, one day the system breaks and needs repairs, I assure you the costs to fix the system will be more than the money saved in the first place. Got it! For me it's non sense to load a vehicle with useless features, raising the price tag and hurting the reliability of the vehicle with those fancy electronics and gizmos.
3: In case you're wondering, I'm not a brand loyal fanboy. I wonder why you bring Toyota to this discussion? What's wrong with Toyota?
4: You know cars are just tools... right? A tool to haul people and cargo from point A to B. Why get upset if someone says something about a tool? It doesn't make any sense.
5: I can afford a BMW in case you're wondering but why waste my money if I can do the same thing in a more cheap and reliable vehicle?
      Take care man!

ruizhernandeztrustfi lol guess you don't understand the internet or youtube. Not all people get mad, some like to fuck around with others. BMW doesn't pay me to defend them so trash them all they won't, I really dont care. I bring up Toyota because it's cheap with a low cost of maintenance. According to your number 2, I didn't fail to comprehend. I understood what you said. Yeah I understand financing and loaning a vehicle. If you're going to loan a vehicle, you most likely loaned it from a dealership and in most cases it's new. In this case, you dont have to worry about maintenance costs because BMW's come with a 4 year 50,000 mile warranty, maybe not the exact numbers but my point is they come with warranty. If you're loaning a vehicle, you most likely won't loan it for more than 4-5 years. BMW's aren't cheap if you haven't noticed so financing this vehicle isn't any different than financing a "cheap" vehicle such as a Toyota which stays within the 20K price range. It is about being able to afford the car. By the word "afford", I dont only mean being able to purchase the car. I also mean being able to afford the cost ownership.
