    What's the intended use for the t-track that's not actually fixed to the table?

    • @timthomas9105
      @timthomas9105 5 років тому

      It's used for a crosscut sled. Will keep the board aligned when working with large sheets. I would have made it permanent to use the tracks to clamp glue-ups. As is can only guide the work piece.

      Looks like it's for hold downs and clamps, not for a miter or crosscut sled. She used a 3/4" router bit to cut the slot, which is the width of Rocklers universal t tracks. Their miter track needs a 1" wide dado to fit the track.

    I don't understand the purpose of the T-tracks. The tracks aren't held down to the table (the dowels only prevent sliding), so how can they effectively hold anything down?

    • @AprilWilkerson
      @AprilWilkerson  8 років тому +6

      A lot of people are saying that but most of the time (so far) when I've used the T-tracks on my other table it's always for things that need to hold the piece from going side to side, not up and down. So I don't know if I'll have an issue or not. If I do, then I'll use this one for side to side holding and the other table with the inserts for up and down holding. : ) Even though it's limited, it still gives these slots a function for otherwise wasted space.

      Or you could just say that the anodized blue color of the track looks AWESOME with the dark Walnut background!? Because that is true. Looks really cool (and has some limited functionality!)!

    great work. Simple question, those t-tracks in the inserts, if you use them to clamp or something like that, don't they pull of the insert ? or there is a different use for those t-tracks? (i'm learning)

    • @stubbhub
      @stubbhub 8 років тому +2

      I thought about the same thing, but as long as you have the thing that you're clamping cross over the t-track, it shouldn't pull itself out. If something is parallel to the track, then she's gonna have problems

    Ok I've been a wood worker for 20 + years. The sled table I totally under stand, but the craft paper I'm at loss for. Maybe you could do a video on the use of the paper? And teach an old wood worker something new. lol I love learning new things.

      I'm by no means a woodworking expert but I think I have read and watched enough to get a good idea of probably >95% of the commonly known tools, and I've never heard of this either. Is it to protect the table? And doesn't it get in the way of the slots?

    • @AprilWilkerson
      @AprilWilkerson  8 років тому +12

      It's just to protect the table while you are doing things like glue ups or painting. This way the paper will get dirty and it can be thrown away but your table stays nice.

    I was so happy when you decided to finally build the outfeed table. I had no idea you would take it this next step. Fantastic add-ons for sure. I only have one tiny question...most people use t-track for holding work down or for alignment. If the inserts are only friction fit what keeps them from lifting up while you are working or projects while using the tracks?

    • @AprilWilkerson
      @AprilWilkerson  8 років тому +1

      Thanks. I actually don't know yet. Since I just built it I haven't really been able to use it yet but it's one of those things that I'll see how it all works and make improvements/modifications as I go. : ) So consider this a trial period for them.

    Won't the bandsaw-blade scrape up the piece of wood you'll push onto the outfeed table?

    • @AprilWilkerson
      @AprilWilkerson  8 років тому +1

      Nah, you make it slightly under flush with the wood so the paper will rip but you run a board over top and it doesn't hit them.

  • @yeolechief623
    @yeolechief623 8 років тому +2

    Do the bandsaw blades not affect material as it slides off of your tablesaw? If the blades are below the wood top surface, then how are they effective?

    • @AprilWilkerson

    @April Wilkerson or +April Wilkerson do you have a jointer? I can't remember if I have ever heard you mention jointing anything. What about a surface planer? Was curious what you have and if you recommend anything?

    Thanks

  • @KWKloeber

    Nice work and thought process.
    I'm totally confused though (not unusual.)
    What was the original purpose of the slots? For a miter gauge? How to use that on the outfeed?
    Or for a long(er) sled?
    Why then plow them wider for flush inserts (though nice!) and then plow the inserts -- now you're back to narrow slots as before. Or are you going to make narrow inserts for your wider insert slots?
    Was it not an option/easier to leave narrow plows and have narrow (T-track) inserts?
    Are you going to make different (flush) inserts?
    And how do these all relate to the original intended use of the slots?
    What do you envision using the T tracks for, since the inserts are not fastened down?
    Would be helpful to see the finished product in action using all the features.
    HELP!
    PS, did you drill the conduit for a couple hitch pins or anything to prevent it from working its way out one side of your hangers?

    I used you idea for new saw stop. I first tried making the table from a sheet of melomein, but the channels chipped out very badly using my router even with tape and pre scoreing, so I used 3/4"Baltic beach and it worked perfectly. Any thoughts on routing the melomein.

    • @DrkKnyght1981
      @DrkKnyght1981 7 років тому

      David Brooks you could try using a dado stack. tape over the area you want to dado, then make an initial shallow dado cut and then make a full pass through, that should eliminate chip out, assuming your dado blades are sharp. :)

  • @ericsmith88

    Hey April. Great project. One critique/question. What is the function of the T-Track? I feel like if you wanted to hold something down with it, you could only do that if the workpiece is also on the insert. If not the pressure of the clamp would just lift the Insert up. Would it not be better to make the dowels bolts and then if you needed you could pop a wingnut on the bottom for those times you need to clamp with the T-Track? Just a thought.

    • @AprilWilkerson
      @AprilWilkerson  8 років тому

      Good thought with making a through bolt! So two thoughts: Most of the time (so far) when I've used the T-tracks on my other table it's always for things that need to hold the piece from going side to side, not up and down. So I don't know if I'll have an issue or not. If I do, then I'll use this one for side to side holding and the other table with the inserts for up and down holding. : ) But the second thought is, even though the slots (might be) limited, it still gives them a function for otherwise wasted space.
      Soo actually, now you got my wheels turning and I have a chain of command! haha....low end is leaving the slots empty and functionless, step up would be to add inserts to make a flat surface, step up from that is adding T-tracks that gives you stability from side to side action, step up from that would be to add through bolts and give you stability from side to side and up and down action, but take away the ease of removing the inserts quickly. Options options. : ) Cheers.

    April, what was your reasoning behind widening the slots (before you had the idea of t-tracks)? Was it just in case they were not 100% lined up with the Saw slots? I need to build a folding setup too.

  • @Danman1972
    @Danman1972 8 років тому

    Nice work. Like the track saw to router adapter. It would be super handy. To hold the inserts on the sides you might think about adding a rare earth magnet in the insert and and a small metal plate in the table side that way if you bump it they won't fall off easily. Unless your dowel is super tight. I have been thinking about an out feed table and love the folding idea, but my saw has an external motor and belt. I'd have to make it double hinged or extend the hinge out pretty far. I might end up with one on wheels that I can store along my wall, but I'm running out of space and I already want to build a service cart for working on my dirt bikes. Unfortunately my "shop" does double duty as a garage.

  • @WilReid
    @WilReid 7 років тому

    Next time you need to cut a bandsaw blade, remember that they're made from hardened steel and are often brittle. Instead of trying to use the cutting portion of your pliers, fold the bandsaw blade and crush the 2 sides together until it forms a kink weakening the metal. Work that back and forth a few times and it will snap easily. It's less work on you and less risk you'll damage the cutters.

    not sure how to actually make it happen, but.........
    Could you make the OutfeedTable Inserts so then can be placed in to the outfeed table upside down, that way you can utilise your outfeed tablw as a totally flat table without and any T-tracks or mitre channels in it.

    One last thought. You can drive a longer screw to make the tracks functional and ascetically pleasing. Then use the dowels to hang up the assembly when not in use. Do you think the dowels will eventually over compress and the holes expand from repeated use?

    Such a freaking treasure trove of great ideas in this video/project! I have that same table saw. Right now I'm using one of those long Maple butcher block topped heavy tables you can get at Costco and Sam's Club because I already had two of those on hand. It goes from one end of the saw all the way to the other end of the saw's extensions table. Perfect fit really because the height is adjustable, but it's very heavy and takes up a lot of space. I even cut some tracks into it so it would be a proper outfeed table. I've been meaning to make something like this so I can fold it out of the way. Have to make room for my new Xmas presents arriving soon....a Laguna LT16HD bandsaw and a Supermax 25-50 sander...Oh yeah!!!! Woot Woot!!!

    Cool project but you are mad using such valuable wood for inserts!
    walnut turns really nicely by the way

      Nah, this is something I'll have in my shop forever. So there isn't any harm in using two pieces of walnut to make it look the way I want.

    I am really interested in the paper? I didn't see a link for it. I've been searching for a nice thick craft paper such as that.. do you know the thickness and where I can get some

    You could cut a hole in the outfeed table and use that to drop a router mount into. Instant router table that is stowable

    Hello April, from Los Angeles here....new homeowner, new to maintaining it, new to woodworking, tools, how to do stuff in general..and a new subscriber to your channel, one of only 2 YT channels that 'break through' to me on wavelengths I grasp the best. Great videos, it's tempting to get ahead of myself, so I'm trying to pick out a logical starting point in going with you. I know it goes without saying because I sense you can handle yourself well but I'll say it anyway....please ignore the jerks, clowns, know it alls, goons, gomers, and goobers...Best Wishes Always

    Never thought of adding a paper roll. I'm always savings cardboard boxes, cutting them open and connecting them together with blue tape. I work with all sorts of materials. Even restored most of my woodworking equipment. Have been looking for a good idea for my antique Craftsman table saw. You gave me the idea I was looking for. TT.

    Awesome addition, April! Curious about your foresight on the mini tracks? Do you have something in mind for a jig, or would standard bench clamps fit in the track? I'm asking because I will be modifying my outfeed table (the one you and Jay made at Nick's shop) and was wanting to add a clamp track, etc...

    I really like the way you approach your projects, the way you explain what you are doing, and the skills you have acquired. BTW, good thing you didn't need to try the magnet suggestion for holding the T-tracks as magnets won't hold aluminum T-tracks.

    Hi. I first subscribed because I wanted to know more about the brand of Titan tools you are using. I'm in the trade but have never seen them in stores in Canada. Must say that you have come a long way in a short time. You've definitely got talent. PTL
