Honestly, in my opinion, I think it's good that every team has their own location (so people can grow a stronger connection to a team), but I would have preferred if they had kept the touring system for a few more years to grow the game in less mainstream areas. Also, I don't like how every week a team has a bye. Besides that, I agree the NLL and PLL should collaborate more. For example, perhaps a skills competition could be a cool little event.
imo the NLL is pickleball compared to PLL which is tennis ... its not the same despite many similarities & comparisons. I personally really dislike NLL but love the traditional NCAA product ... would really pull me out of wanting to enjoy the PLL if it was more connected to NLL.
The touring model isn't going anywhere for the foreseeable future. So no worries. Additionally, a team won't be on a bye every single week, just the homecoming weekends where the "homecoming" team will get a double header. This weekend we will (finally) get to see all the teams play.
@@iamneilbarrett I know the touring model will not be gone any time soon, but my issue with having "home" games is that you basically force some locations in the schedule, when you could instead try bringing the sport to newer places, and raise interest there. Hence why I preferred a pure touring model, because it gave more freedom if they wanted to. Anyway, it's not like they experimented a lot with locations even when using the full touring model. They basically always went to the same locations almost every year, which makes sense in a way since they were testing out waters for home teams locations, and some places are just more relevant for lacrosse in general. Still, for example this year, not counting home cities, I reckon none of the locations differ from last year's schedule, which is a shame imo.
@@paologrisanti4627 San Diego is a brand new location that the league has never been to. But also, there aren't a ton of completely new areas to go. Maybe what 5ish? Florida, Houston, KC/StL, and Tennessee? They will keep trying out new places with the touring model but they still have to make smart choices for the league. Can't get too wrapped up in pushing boundaries for the sake of pushing them. Growth comes steadily (I am not suggesting you don't know this. just stating a reminder that they do have over 300 employees and they want to prioritize getting the players more money and to do that, they need to bring in more revenue). Its not a easy tightrope to walk.
@@iamneilbarrett San Diego is there because of the Redwoods. I said new locations not based on home teams, so it doesn't count. I think they should at least try going to Florida and Indiana (ND university).
I love what you are saying, I do agree we need to be far more united, but I don’t think it’s “both leagues fault”, the NLL regularly talks about the PLL players and post on ig about it but it is the PLL that actually goes out of its way to not mention the NLL
That’s because the PLL makes it so players can’t play Boxh lacrosse. They can play it in the NLl but the PLL has made it. So players can’t play in the MSL he talks about making the game bigger and better but constantly does everything he can to stunt its growth
@@ryanssten731 Not sure how the PLL could be scheduled to let players play in all three, PLL, NLL and MSL without playing in the fall when they would be competing with the NFL. Unfortunate, but just the way it is. I do wish the PLL announcers would mention the NLL more, they always seem to bypass it or slightly mention "indoor"
Almost every player is in the box league or has some sort of sponsorship. I’m pretty sure the average player earns about 40-50k with everything combined, while not good it’s about an average persons salary.
The majority of the country makes around that. Most of our politicians are losing their mind at the idea of $15/hr as a minimum wage. $35/k is more than fine to our corporate overlords.
No, but double that if you're playing in 2 leagues, plus endorsement deals, and it's possible to make a 6 figure income just on lacrosse, although unlikely. Only the very best can achieve that level of income, although a mediocre player might be able to swing $60k a year.
Growing up in rural canada there was a hockey arena in every town making Box lacrosse way more accessible, plus the less players needed to start a team helps, my finally midget season we had 11 runners plus a goalie. If you don’t live in a major center you’re not playing field. So I get why NLL/box lacrosse is way bigger in Canada than the PLL/field. But it’s looking like Sixes will hopefully help grow field lacrosse in Canada and I think that’s where the PLL and NLL should help each other out to grow the game as a whole.
The reason the focus for things like the number of teams, where championship series is being in the NE all comes down to cost and population. It's the most central location for a majority of players and a central location for where the majority of lacrosse is. Lacrosse is growing rapdily, but the NE is still, by far, the HUB of the lacrosse world
It will take twenty years for lacrosse to become mainstream. There needs to be more promotion for kids to play, and get there parents involved. It does not happen overnight. Also having a connection to all things lacrosse and making sure it’s fun to watch and participate in whether you’re younger or older. The more people involved the more the growth.
as someone who personally prefers indoor lacrosse because that is the sport i've chosen to play, i still follow the PLL to the utmost extreme, especially now that the teams are linked to specific cities. being someone from philadelphia who got into lacrosse not too long ago and seeing the waterdogs come into our city to play for us helps me to link myself to a team which helps me to become more engrossed with the game. i think that both leagues need to do whats right for the sport and understand that NLL fans ARE PLL fans, theyre not 2 seperate people.
My dream would be for the same organization to run a pro box and field lacrosse league. Two seasons with the same teams and the same players under contract. Some players would only play box, some would only play field, but basically have a single league with a box and a field season. Throw in the 6's championship series between seasons, just for fun. Now THAT would be awesome!
Played in middle and high school from 2007-2017 the Paul rabil part about his vlogs and having a life was so crazy. Dude was the best player we’ve ever seen so far and was struggling to just live day to day.
@@The_Winters_Soldier I’m sorry when was the last time Tyrell Owen’s tried to sell you an apartment? Fuck off dude lacrosse players don’t make shit compared to any other pro sport.
Both the NLL and PLL are far more concerned about profit over growth of the game. It’s heart breaking because this is the same degenerative mindset that infects the health insurance industry and housing to the point so many people are struggling for basic necessities to survive. Our government allows these crucial industries to be run by greed so I have no hope in my mind something like lacrosse won’t also be swallowed whole by corporate greed.
NLL and PLL merger/collab might be huge. Getting continuity over both leagues would be amazing. This probably means taking the NLL teams and fanbases and bringing them to the PLL as they are more established but there are lots of ways to go about this. Would love to see accessibility increased too. I live in northern CT and I can't even find a mens league anywhere from central CT to central MA! That's crazy how is one of the places lacrosse is supposed to be the most popular not even have mens leagues? I wonder if Maryland/denver/tri state? struggle with similar things.
As a lacrosse fan I want to see the sport grow both professionally and otherwise. I love and am a die hard fan of the NLL and I like and enjoy the PLL a bit more casually as entertainment when it's on. That said, from a business perspective with both leagues trying to make it closer to becoming a major professional sport it's understandable that they both see each other as existential threats. There's no other professional sport where there isn't a clear hierarchy between leagues. This balance of power is what makes collaboration so difficult.
MLL's overall image with the branding of each team and location was much more professional imo. PLL team names are juvenile sounding and the marketing is super cringe and tiktok vibe
Yeah I agree with that, the current PLL teams don't have much of a soul to them. They might have a home city but it doesn't feel real. The Old Outlaws really engaged in the community and felt right in the mix with the Avs, Mammoth, and Nuggets.
@@RockyMountainLacrosse They really gotta get games on espn 2/3. With championship on nbc/abc. Move away from touring model. MLL was great you could snag an evening ticket whenever for like $20. Partner with a better marketing agency. They finally woke up and now allow you to buy games for just the day. Earlier in the year you had to buy the entire weekend.
I think the only PLL teams that need to be rebranded are the waterdogs and the whipsnakes. Both have the stupidest and most childish team names I’ve ever heard. If anyone honestly thinks that casual sports fans in a city like Philadelphia will get behind a team called the waterdogs, then they’re out of their damn mind. They had a great opportunity to bring back the Barrage and Bayhawks, but didn’t. I appreciate all that Paul and Mike have done, but they completely dropped the ball on this one (in my opinion).
This is so funny because I have a completely opposite view. The MLL looked like the teams were designed for a Backyard Lacrosse™️ computer game in the early 2000s and when I first saw it, I thought it was an amateur league that ESPN was randomly televising like they do cornhole tournaments. From the bulky and ill-fitting uniforms, to the cheesy, overly serious, and only tangentially related to location names like “Cannons” and “Outlaws,” to the color-schemes seemingly selected by someone’s upper-middle class grandpa to be as inoffensive as possible, the MLL reeked of mediocrity and a lack of effort as a professional league, esp. when compared to every other professional sport in America that was actively trying to grow their brands and sports. Conversely, everything about the PLL (the uniforms, the on-the-field interviews and camera work, even the social media presence) seems intentionally designed to take advantage of the technological and cultural affordances of the 21st century, and while I can understand why some more traditional “purists” might find that cringey, I also think that mindset is exactly why lax hasn’t and won’t become mainstream, despite having all of the athletic elements necessary to captivate American audiences.
You mentioned playing in the middle of the country… yet the PLL has completely neglected the entire central time zone. Outside of this upcoming weekend in Minny, not a single team or game for year in the entire central time zone.
I would say another main thing that needs to be fixed is how many pll teams there are. We NEED more so more people can compete, and with more teams = more fans = more MONEY for all players!
Imo they need to do a split model to get more money. Add 2 teams then send 5 teams to one location 5 teams to another for each weekend. For specific markets maybe that let's you do two games per year instead of one or for places like the chaos do a Charlotte day and a Raleigh day for example. But you can have twice as many locations with the same number of games
As a defenceman, I naturally enjoy the physicality of the NLL more, despite my preference for field lacrosse, this is mainly because I don’t like how Rabil seems to be going out of his way to remove hitting from the PLL.
I wanna give an idea for a video series you could do Similarly to how Play like football has videos in each football position maybe you could do videos on each of the lacrosse positions ,how some of the best players became good and the history of how the positions evolved giving you a decent bit to work off of but it's also not my channel and a very big idea
@RockyMountainLacrosse This could be a good idea, and you could even do it for more box lacrosse kinds of play styles like a box transition or defenseman ,giving lots of content from one series and it can show how positions evolve over time and how the sport took different courses when it came for a box vs field kind of game. These are of course ideas only
the biggest problem is that people just don't want to watch it. they just don't think it would be fun to watch but then when the actually watch a lacrosse game they're hooked
As a fan there is very little casual viewing of the game. Anyone interested in the game has either played or has a close friend or family member who is playing or has played . Also , yes the reputation of the game is that it's a "rich kid , prep school sport" while the reality isn't true , the perception exists and if that's the perception then it's the truth . Not only do many inner city kids not have meaningful access to the game , many , have no idea, none , that the game even exists . Also lacrosse has to stop trying to use other sports like football to try and legitimize the sport . On media it always becomes a big deal when a high school athlete plays football and then comes back to lacrosse. When in reality more often than not, those football players while excellent athletes end up not being sucessful in lacrosse when they come back to the game. Hopefully it can be figured out .
I can kind of see that since Box Lacrosse has more teams to view games for and is indoors in a smaller rink (compared to a field) making keeping your eyes on where the ball is a whole lot easier
I'm more into the NLL. Not because I played in one league over the other. I practiced and done drills in lacrosse, but I never played it. The reason I prefer NLL over PLL is because I grew up with hockey. Street, ball, inline and ice. NLL is more of that hockey style and it's a faster and more physical style that I'm used to watching and playing. It doesn't mean I will never watch PLL. Because I have. And yes, I would like to see lacrosse including inline and ball hockey be an Olympic sport because I think it should.
The biggest problem with the PLL is the game day roster size. 19 players is far too few. 3 attackmen, 3 close defense, 3 offensive midfielders, 2 SSDMs, 2 goalies, 1 LSM, 1 face-off guy. That's 15 players. That only leaves 4 subs . You probably want a 2nd offensive midfield line. Just like in hockey, one line can't play the entire game - not at the high level I would expect to see in the pros (3 more gets you to 18), and a 2nd set of SSDMs - that gets you to 20 and you only have 19 roster spots. I want to see competition. I don't want to see Joe Nardella go 31-0 on face-offs because the other team isn't even trying. I don't want to see what happened with the Redwoods and the Atlas where Chris Fake went down and the Woods had no one to replace him so the Atlas offense just took over the game (and the Atlas is my favorite PLL team). Rosters shouldn't be so small teams don't have back-ups. Rosters shouldn't be so small teams have to decide if they want to dress a face-off guy. They should be able to dress 2 in case one gets hurt. Not having enough players to have subs makes the league look bush. It's like a beer league with coaches. You know where the prima donna players count the guys on the sideline before putting their gear on and decide to go home instead of playing if they think it's too many. This is a pro league. I know it's a players' league and they all want to play and they don't want to split the small paychecks they get between more players. But as a fan, I expect more from a pro league. The 2nd biggest issue with the PLL is the off-field officials. There are clock issues (shot clock and/or game clock) EVERY SINGLE WEEKEND. That also makes the league look bush.
Nice vid man! NLL teams seem to have little or no issue shouting out players playing in the PLL.. check out Albany’s recent post about Tye Kurtz and Josh Byrne! From a good source with the PLL they’re told to not mention the NLL at all. He got in trouble for mentioning the NLL in an article that was written about a player playing in both leagues. Seems a little one sided on the hatred to me. I’m biased as well being a box lacrosse guy, but the NLL feels like a legit league while the PLL feels like a social media experiment for kids. The NLL should takes some notes from the PLL on branding and using social media more but overall I think the NLL is a better product.
A couple of thoughts on pay: 35K is better than 10k, but with inflation its not 3.5x more purchasing power. WNBA teams are subsidized by NBA teams. That helps a lot. I enjoy box in the winter and field in the summer. The PLL and NLL should 100% have a more symbiotic relationship. This will be controversial but I think the Paul's Lacrosse League would be better served if he put the spotlight more on current players and less on himself. Fate Of A Sport? Cringe.
I don’t know if Rugby is a good sport to take inspiration from but if it was treated similar to 15s versus 7s where people understood there’s different styles would be a good marketing strategy in my mind
I'd say the big problem with lacrosse is that if you didn't play you don't care about it which is not the same as other sports, it's also really hard to watch, very had to follow, lots of bodies in the way and a tiny ball that you can't see, on a tv it's really hard to see what's going on. I don't know what can be done about this, maybe if it were bigger then more people would care like other sports but that's circular
I understand that they needed to be more established as a league and not a touring side show, but I think it was a huge slap in the face to midwest and texas lacrosse fans when they annouced a team in the carolinas and a team in denver, 1400 miles of missed opportunity to "grow the game" and especially because they consider carolina to be in the western conference
After moving out to Colorado from a hot bed area on the east coast I can understand why the game is struggling to grow. Back in PA any time park you’d drive past would have a multiple fields and nets. Out here I struggle to find a field to ho shoot on
I'm going to have a different perspective than most on this topic because I grew up in Central Valley, California, which isn't exactly a hot bed for lacrosse and played in high school. The biggest issue is awareness, the funding will be a result of that awareness. Awareness means starting young, making entry fees really low so that all income levels can participate, organizing the community around the sport, and going to practice in areas that you normally wouldn't. In my senior year, the #2 football team in California came from a bottom 10 academic school, so what's the excuse? There's a stink of rich elitism in the sport that needs to be solved and quieted if the game ever wants to become a serious sport. Use the fact that this was how war was fought in pre European America.
Oddly enough, what I mean about the rich elitism is it's VERY white, and with the speed and athleticism to the game, it shouldn't be that way. Here's one way to market the sport to black inner city kids and their parents; in the summer, in between basketball and / or football season, you can give an athletic option that doesn't interfere with either sport's schedule, low injury risk comparatively, plus parents don't have to worry as much about what to do when either season is done and trust me, that's HUGE in the inner city, plus oddly enough, they can forge a path that few black athletes now get to, thanks to their predecessors, ever experience and that's being a trailblazer. Point guards, running backs, linebackers, wide receivers, and quarterbacks should be encouraged to play
It’s such a bummer that PLL has moved on from the no-home-locations model for professional sports; tying teams to cities doesn’t make sense for athletes in contemporary sports and is a vestige from a time when players were from, and lived around, the location the team was in-part of the big issues in the NBA (“big vs. small markets” and player loyalty) stems from the stupidity of this antiquated model. Why would a highly touted draft pick from the west coast want to play/stay in a small, middle American market? I understand that, logistically, tying teams to locations means that they can generate local support because humans have a proclivity for caring about “us” (regardless of how erroneous the application of that term is); it’s why people root for their country in an Olympic sport they normally don’t gaf about. And I’m sure that the plan is to eventually garner “ownership” capital to support the league; right now, I imagine that trying to get investors without giving them control over teams is difficult, but it doesn’t change my opinion that the lack of locations was a move in the right direction for creating parity in professional sports, as infeasible of a concept as that is in America.
in my opinion, the field game has to shift towards the box game, the outdoor sport where its 10v10 is too expensive to be inclusive. if we really want to grow the game, the outdoor game has to shrink to make it more affordable and more accessible across the US.
Plenty of hobbies and sports aren't "mainstream". I'm not sure I'll jump on the assumption that all lacrosse players want the sport to be mainstream. To be honest I enjoy it being more obscure but still recognized. It takes the edge off of youth lacrosse that it isn't played to become pro and growing up it was just played because it's fun and my friends played. It's a Native American game and doesn't need to have all the money in the world squeezed out of it and optimized for all the best commericals.
Yes he was, I’m sorry about the wrong footage. I spent probably an hour looking through his channel and couldn’t find the video where he talked about it.
what do u think about lax announcers and social media people always correlating lacrosse with other sports? i know sone people hate it because they’re trying to differentiate themselves from different leagues and stand out more, but some people love it because it helps people who’ve never grown up with lacrosse or know anything about it have an easier time grasping how dominant a player is or how unique they are. just want to know ur thoughts on that
As someone who has never seen an actual lacrosse game, it just doesn't seem like a big outside stadium sport, the ball is too small the players do not take enough space on the field. Similar to ice hockey where you wanna see the small stuff as closely as possible
If that's okay, I know maybe it kinda strays off your usual videos, but could you maybe do a video about what do you think is wrong with the current Denver team? Could delve deeper into Chrome too maybe?
Rich preppy sport? That's a field lax issue. Box players typically aren't preppy rich kids. Gary Gait never played hockey because it was too expensive. When I grew up in Canada, box players were considered tough and a little crazy, not preppy, rich kids.
THe exact same thing is happening with golf, outside of the Majors, nobody cares if Scottie Sheffler wins a random PGA event, and LIV is seen as the red headed stepchild. It's iMO the same thing with PLL and NLL but it does not make sense to merge them. At least not merge them while the people taking jabs at each league are still involved, having them in a merged league is just going to be a recipe for disaster though but where can you send them. WHo is to say they won't just go and start up a rival league and then we are right back here. That being said, I do think a videogame could help get more eyes on lacrosse as well as promoting the sport at all levels as far as TV goes with a big network showing the entire season and taking it seriously, like NBC or CBS giving the sport the respect it deserv and more to the point being easy to find and watch. When you get to watch a game, it is fast paced and exciting and fun to watch. The problem is being able to watch it. Radio, vlogs, UA-cam content and yes a videogame are all other ways to draw people in. Do the local teams have radio affiliates a la baseball or football that carry the games with a radio crew calling what's going on, or like how the AHL and WHL do things? If, for instance, 2K got to sign a five year deal to make a PLL game and EA got to make an NLL game in the same period then you got a former player to spearhead someone making their own game as well, with how big UA-cam is and how big creators can draw in views on even the most average of games, to me it's a no brainer to get people to pick up the game, see it's fun then be able to watch the teams in the game, on TV or radio. THe worst thing the leagues can and are doing, is going yeah we are going to sign deals with a hard to find and watch service that you can't easily find our games on. Whoever signed off on that has no idea what they have done. Sure, it may look good to stream to ESPN but really, how many people does that reach vs something like NBC or CBS? Okay sure, you may have to convince CBS or NBC to take on one or both leagues, but that is not an impossible task. Hell even Amazon would be a better option than eSPN and a hard to find stream
It seems like lacrosse hype stops at the collegiate level, which I find is unique to lacrosse specifically. Maybe it’s a marketing thing, maybe something else, idk 🤷
This isn't unique to lacrosse I'd say. Wrestling (actual freestyle, not WWE) is one that is way more popular than lacrosse and other sports yet it doesn't even have much of a pro league It's like after college Wrestling you gotta either make the Olympics or you only used it to get a degree
While yes, it isn't unique to lacrosse, it's still sad that the sports interest has to cut off at college and no pro league as I think athletes who dedicated years of there life to a sport should have the opportunity to go pro and make the effort worth there while
Lacrosse has a problem. It’s outpriced for black people. We’re the best athletes in the world, and most of us can’t afford to play it. That’s the problem with lacrosse.
The leagues fighting each other is just dumb since they are two distinctly different sports. Like arena football and the NFL, or soccer and whatever indoor league is trying to exist. We used to have a roller hockey team a few decades ago. I went to an indoor lacrosse game, but the team quickly folded. I've watched outdoor on tv. It would be nice if the two leagues worked together to further grow the sport. It wasn't an option in my area through school or as a club sport.
I think you have it wrong lacrosse is growing and is doing way better than past years and j. Certain states it’s very big a couple of years ago kids would ask me what is lacrosse now they all know so I think Paul made a lot of progress and other countries are getting involved to
Very true, I agree it’s growing at the youth level. But in terms of the College and Pro area, fandom is lacking. Need to have more ways to get adults involved. Most games are majority Parents with there kids, nothing wrong with that but 18+ is the market that brings in a lot more viewership and money.
Very good point but I think that will come and I think the next 4 years or so will be a big indicator if lacrosse is gonna grow to be a bigger sport with higher paid athletes
Indopr lacrosse suits the cold climate of Canada and the American northwoods states ..playing field lacrosse in march in northern Michigan (for example) _ flat out sucks. its not enjoyable.I grew up in in freaking Anne Arundel county , 1000 miles south of Toronto and still REALLY wished i could be playing indoors when we started practice in late February. In Canada starting practice outside in February isn't really an option unless you play in a league that has a LOT more resources (money) than the PLL. And box lacrosse players develop skill sets that are different than field players (as the narrator pointed out).. I remember watching a team of US all stars (REALLY all stars) play against a Canadian box lacrosse team in a demo tour..the Americans got routed...it was embarrassing..only standout fitness stars like Mark Gold and Frank Urso shone at all in that series. Finesse American field players got steamrolled by the Canadians.
How "mainstream" do you want, or need, lacrosse to be? It's much better known than many other sports in North America or the world. I think your idea of "mainstream" is a short list of the very few big money-making spectator sports, the audience for which is already close to saturated, which means lacrosse, or any other game trying to break into that list, would have to displace one of the others. Lacrosse is as "mainstream" as most of the other things we refer to by that adjective, sports or otherwise.
That eight-home-markets deal is ridiculous, since the PLL still only visits that city once. At least NLL makes good on having actual home markets, even when they pull one from Long Island to place it in Ottawa.
If you don’t love sports as a kid you’re not gonna magically love them as an adult. I’ve never met a sports fan that didn’t grow up with their team. Youth leagues are the only way the pro leagues will grow.
I wasn’t a sport fan as a kid, I did kickboxing so team sports weren’t my thing until I got kids my boys play box lax and tackle football now I’m a big fan!
The biggest issue is the skill is just too high. Unless your name is Lee zink- you don't stand a chance on defense becuase there is just nothing they can do
"Lacrosse isn't mainstream..." Says the voice on the Lacrosse UA-cam video we are all watching... Apparently that isn't mainstream enough for Lacrosse... LMFAO! I'm a lacrosse fan and i'm sick of fake fan channels like this who pretend to love a sport but are not supportive and bad mouth or apologize for it every change they get on a video...
Would be cool if each Nll team and pll team was was associated with each other almost like the nhl and ahl but two way guys would be elite players and teams could pull from each other if needed!!
This sport wont get away from being a rich preppy kid sport until until the common man can afford to play this sport. All talk about "growing the game" is just fluff that sounds nice until then. A few lax clinics in under priviledged areas isn't fixing that. The people that make gear are just like Hockey gear makers, in the sense that they're perfectly okay with the sport being a niche. Played by only those that can afford it.
Frankly until lacrosse is no longer a sport just for rich suburban kids there’s no way that it’s going to be mainstream. Hockey is getting to that point as well
Only way we can improve is through criticism and changing what doesn’t work. This video is all about getting a discussion going. Thanks for the comment!
I agree lax is a rich man sport which is starting to change in my neighborhood. Are team is a mix class team and we won our league. We need a mix class to make this great sport grow.
lacrosse ether needs to become full contact or there needs to be a boundary that attackers cant enter to shoot. there is a reason they make so little money. its boring to watch. geez the WNBA is doing way better.
PLL is a niche league and will not last. I love the game and played in college. PLL players (a lot of the best "star" players) have all gone to prestigious schools...they don't need to play more than a couple of years of pro lacrosse. For the most part, the "star" turnover is pretty quick as "the juice just ain't worth the squeeze". These guys are not leaving college early to go pro. They have legit degrees and have high paying jobs waiting for them due to their alumni networks. The players have no interesting back stories that players of the NBA or NFL have. There's no rags to riches vibe...a lot of these guys come from well do families. The human interest factor from the casual fan is non existent. It's not their fault they come from privilege. A lot of them have choices that don't include long term damage to their bodies. The NLL is a different game with different players.
Honestly, in my opinion, I think it's good that every team has their own location (so people can grow a stronger connection to a team), but I would have preferred if they had kept the touring system for a few more years to grow the game in less mainstream areas.
Came here to say this. There seems to be way more ignorance/hostility from the PLL than the NLL.
That’s because the PLL makes it so players can’t play Boxh lacrosse. They can play it in the NLl but the PLL has made it. So players can’t play in the MSL he talks about making the game bigger and better but constantly does everything he can to stunt its growth
@@ryanssten731 WLA as well (the cooler league imo)
@@ryanssten731 Not sure how the PLL could be scheduled to let players play in all three, PLL, NLL and MSL without playing in the fall when they would be competing with the NFL. Unfortunate, but just the way it is. I do wish the PLL announcers would mention the NLL more, they always seem to bypass it or slightly mention "indoor"
@@midnite8791 maybe the PLL can let its players play in MSL/WLA so if there team has a bye or something they can still play
No sane person can live comfortably off of $35k in 2024.
Off season
If they host a bunch of camps they can make a bunch of money
Very well done video, I think lacrosse needs more of these types of videos
I love how I just hoped onto your channel today and then like 20 minutes after I subbed, a new vid dropped
Cant wait to see more from you
Thank you!
Good point about combining the powers of the NLL/PLL to supercharge growth. Great vid!
The reason the focus for things like the number of teams, where championship series is being in the NE all comes down to cost and population. It's the most central location for a majority of players and a central location for where the majority of lacrosse is. Lacrosse is growing rapdily, but the NE is still, by far, the HUB of the lacrosse world
i love lacrosse but you know we have problem when Lyle won play in this league
Dhane this year too.
@@The_Winters_Soldier links? Curious as to what I missed
Just watched an Iroquois team play for the first time in their own stadium now I'm a huge fan
Yes accurate and sadly truthful
dude they play one season for 35k idk how much more money you want when it’s not in the sport
People in the PLL try to trash on the NLL yet I don’t see them getting 19,000 people out for a championship game. Or even 10,000
Its because of “grow the game”. That phrase is one of the worst things that has come out of the lacrosse world.
The Championship Series has been played in Northern VA the last 2 years so like 1.5 hours south of Baltimore.
As a defenceman, I naturally enjoy the physicality of the NLL more, despite my preference for field lacrosse, this is mainly because I don’t like how Rabil seems to be going out of his way to remove hitting from the PLL.
I wanna give an idea for a video series you could do
Similarly to how Play like football has videos in each football position maybe you could do videos on each of the lacrosse positions ,how some of the best players became good and the history of how the positions evolved giving you a decent bit to work off of but it's also not my channel and a very big idea
This is a great idea, might just give it a shot. Keep your eyes peeled...
@RockyMountainLacrosse This could be a good idea, and you could even do it for more box lacrosse kinds of play styles like a box transition or defenseman ,giving lots of content from one series and it can show how positions evolve over time and how the sport took different courses when it came for a box vs field kind of game.
These are of course ideas only
Nice video man
barrier to entry for lacrosse is $$$$ expensive. If the high schools could sponsor some gear, more kids would probably play lacrosse
the biggest problem is that people just don't want to watch it. they just don't think it would be fun to watch but then when the actually watch a lacrosse game they're hooked
Mitch seems like a great guy
He is, I met him in person and he took a picture with me and seemed very genuine from the little bit that I got to talk to him
As a fan there is very little casual viewing of the game.
Box Lax is just a better spectator sport than outdoor. NLL>PLL
It’s hard to compare the PLL to the NBA when the NBA has been around far longer than the PLL.
Its more of a slap in the face to Maryland lacrosse fans that they added the outlaws and cannons back before the bayhawks.
Any pick up lacrosse happening in Denver this summer?
After moving out to Colorado from a hot bed area on the east coast I can understand why the game is struggling to grow. Back in PA any time park you’d drive past would have a multiple fields and nets. Out here I struggle to find a field to ho shoot on
Pat Spencer is a fine example . Although, every sport had humble beginnings. MLB had great players with summer jobs early on….
Kinda reminds me of the division with the PPA and MLP for pickleball up until the recent merger
If lacrosse players are still making less than WNBA players…it’s not mainstream yet as much as I want it to be
It’s such a bummer that PLL has moved on from the no-home-locations model for professional sports; tying teams to cities doesn’t make sense for athletes in contemporary sports and is a vestige from a time when players were from, and lived around, the location the team was in-part of the big issues in the NBA (“big vs. small markets” and player loyalty) stems from the stupidity of this antiquated model.
Those clips that looked like he was a realtor was his giving a tour of his Baltimore crib. Was he really a realtor??
Great suggestion, I’ll see what I can do!
joe tsai and oliver marti are principal owners in both leagues.
Check out the MSL for some awesome box lacrosse. Not sure what the pay is
There needs to be a push in different demographics I would’ve loved to play but there weren’t cheap options for me growing up.
Exactly, everything is tailored towards kids so there’s not much for adults.
This isn't unique to lacrosse I'd say.
Wrestling (actual freestyle, not WWE) is one that is way more popular than lacrosse and other sports yet it doesn't even have much of a pro league
It's like after college Wrestling you gotta either make the Olympics or you only used it to get a degree
While yes, it isn't unique to lacrosse, it's still sad that the sports interest has to cut off at college and no pro league as I think athletes who dedicated years of there life to a sport should have the opportunity to go pro and make the effort worth there while
The biggest problem with PLL is the game day roster size. 19 players is far too few. 3 attackmen, 3 close defense, 3 midfielders, 2 SSDMs,
Lacrosse has a problem.
$35,000 a year is not live-able in any major city
Who the hell wants to live in a city
Wait till this guy hears about the MLU, AUDL/UFA
That eight-home-markets deal is ridiculous, since the PLL still only visits that city once. At least NLL makes good on having actual home markets, even when they pull one from Long Island to place it in Ottawa.
So mad about the riptide moving. Of course the 1 year I start caring about box lacrosse, I only get to go to one game and then the team moves away
Pll or nll?
PLL but NLL is starting to win me over ngl
35k is live-able? Where?
If you don’t love sports as a kid you’re not gonna magically love them as an adult. I’ve never met a sports fan that didn’t grow up with their team. Youth leagues are the only way the pro leagues will grow.
I wasn’t a sport fan as a kid, I did kickboxing so team sports weren’t my thing until I got kids my boys play box lax and tackle football now I’m a big fan!
30k is the new 15k. This is still all these guys side gig.
The biggest issue is the skill is just too high. Unless your name is Lee zink- you don't stand a chance on defense becuase there is just nothing they can do
PLL sucks now. new shotclock and short field allows goalies to get lit up from 10 yards
The only way to make lacrosse a non elitist sport is to stop charging so much for equipment. Stop charging over $3000 for travel teams.
Fairly certain 35k is the league minimum
"Lacrosse isn't mainstream..." Says the voice on the Lacrosse UA-cam video we are all watching... Apparently that isn't mainstream enough for Lacrosse... LMFAO!
I'm a lacrosse fan and i'm sick of fake fan channels like this who pretend to love a sport but are not supportive and bad mouth or apologize for it every change they get on a video...
Would be cool if each Nll team and pll team was was associated with each other almost like the nhl and ahl but two way guys would be elite players and teams could pull from each other if needed!!
Lacrosse is the sport for people who never learned to play a sport
This sport wont get away from being a rich preppy kid sport until until the common man can afford to play this sport. All talk about "growing the game" is just fluff that sounds nice until then. A few lax clinics in under priviledged areas isn't fixing that. The people that make gear are just like Hockey gear makers, in the sense that they're perfectly okay with the sport being a niche. Played by only those that can afford it.
Does the NFL promote XFL? Does the NHL promote da beauty league? There needs to be one league, politics in sports is the dumbest thing ever
Frankly until lacrosse is no longer a sport just for rich suburban kids there’s no way that it’s going to be mainstream. Hockey is getting to that point as well
🐸 🥍
Decolonize lacrosse.
More kids are playing lacrosse than baseball. So knock it off. You sounds like a jealous old guy
did u even watch the vid 🤣bro said he loves lax why would he be jealous
Maybe where you live (NE?). But I can tell you here in the Midwest it's 100-1 baseball over lax easy.
Your video is divisive and not helping grow the game.
Only way we can improve is through criticism and changing what doesn’t work. This video is all about getting a discussion going. Thanks for the comment!
who cares,?
I agree lax is a rich man sport which is starting to change in my neighborhood. Are team is a mix class team and we won our league. We need a mix class to make this great sport grow.
lacrosse ether needs to become full contact or there needs to be a boundary that attackers cant enter to shoot. there is a reason they make so little money. its boring to watch. geez the WNBA is doing way better.
Huh?
Wait till this guy hears about the MLU, AUDL/UFA
