Reviewing an AWARD WINNING PIE SHOP in MANCHESTER!

- I'm back today with another Pie review and this time, it's an actual pie! (according the Oxford definition of one). I'm in Manchester for one final video today and I will be reviewing an award winning pie shop called the Great North Pie co. who have superb reviews online.
The last time I reviewed a pie place was at Mad O'Rourke's in Tipton which gained a bit of controversy surrounding what constitutes an actual pie, let's see if this fares better!

Looked good Gary, ideal on a cold day, comfort food, hope Tom Kerridge watches, and sees how many chips should be in a portion.
Haha agreed !😂
lol, I saw "Toms" fish and chips opinion reply today.
I see Tom Kerridge was moaning about customers complaining about his 'over priced' fish and chips today. He's really copping it and deservedly so, probably because of Gary's recent poor but correct review. Keep it up Gary, we really appreciate your no nonsense reviews.
I really don’t think he will look or listen 😳
He already has, much of his complaint looked like it was directed at you. I think it was reported on the Daily Mail website.
You have such calming nature to your videos, yet also find them genuine and trust worthy! Great channel 👍🏻
Glad you like them Danny thank you 🙏
The pie sitting on a mound of mash surrounded by a moat of gravy was very creative and practical. The food looked delicious. Another gem review Gary!
Cheers Christopher 👍
Motte is a good word, and the pie must be the Bailey.
Looks delicious, Manchester is the place for pies Gary!
We went to the Transport Mueseum in Manchester on Sunday and we had a pie each from the cafe. We were not expecting much but the pies were fantastic.
We had two steak pies, 1 sausage roll, 2 bovril and a can for 8 quid! Can't say fairer than that Gary
All the best 👍
You certainly can’t cheers Nick 👍
I love the Transport Museum. Looking by the Canals is always lovely too. Going to have to check out these Pies. Cheers to all
Looks amazing. I love that style of chips. Reminds me of the type you’d make at home
Exactly 👍
Me too!
Honestly, that looked unbelievably delicious! Purely from the visual point of view I could not fault it. Even the idea of serving it in a bowl rather than a plate, so the gravy could be enjoyed without half of it ending up on the floor. Even the meat being shredded and not minced is a real winner for me; I never did like a minced meat pie of any description but especially not minced chicken which for me is like eating baby food.
That was an amazing review. Thank you Gary. ♥ BTW the new word of the day goes to "sweggy" 😝
Hi Gary. Can completely understand that point of view, the texture can be unenjoyable. Once again, much appreciated. Indeed, not happy with myself with Sweggy lol
Haha yes sweggy 🤣
@@GaryEats Gary you're up North lad we will take it..🤣🤣
Haha thank you.@@CheshireCat6639
Tips should always be at the customer's discretion, so good to see. Good sizes pie, like an 70s ashtray size. Thankfully it tasted better.
So true! 👍
I'd love to see a Steak and Kidney pie on the menu- as a country we have become squeemish of offal like our American cousins. For me the Steak and Kidney is the king of pies. You said they have seasonal menus, so maybe they have steak and kidney pie on at another time of the year.
Anyway, I loved the look of the restaurant itself and like you say the outside space looks amazing for summer. Your pie looked delicious, well filled, and the way you described it it sounded perfect. I liked the presentation- perhaps that presentation of the pie atop of the mash would not look as good on a regular plate? All in all I will definitely give it a go myself, it looks excellent and the discount was obviously an added bonus. I hope the cameraman managed to save a few chips for himself.
☺
Thank you Gary. Yes he managed to have a few 😄
if you love steak and kidney pudding check out Sophie Grigson, ❤
I agree but nobody wants it anymore..
I eat everything out of a similar bowl at home. It is a set of 4 large pasta bowls from Amazon. Yes, anything with sauce/gravy should be in a bowl.
What a lovely presentation, with the mash sitting in a bowl of gravy with a delicious-tasting pie on top.
Agree with you there Patrick 👍
I've 3 sets of bowls. I rarely use plates any more for main meals. Only thing I use plates for now is toast.
@@mozzjones6943 I gather you use a spork too. The best of both worlds.🤣
@@mozzjones6943 haha. I have a set of ramen bowls for noodles/ramen/rice. A set of high sided bowls for other stuff and a set of Cornishware pasta bowls for well, pasta and stuff. I'm currently eating rice and spicy meatballs from one. They are great for eating chips from too, very wide.
No
Now they are what I call proper chips! And that pie looked delicious! Proper classy comfort food. Great video Gary!
Thank you kindly Paul 👌
They looked like Proper homemade chips. My mum used to work in a cafe up north and would hand peel about 4 bags of potatoes a day and they looked exactly like those chips.
@@PastaSauce. yes, they’re exactly like the ones my mum used to make too. Almost like they were done in a 1980s chip pan 🤣 no chips taste as good to me
Love seeing all these regular reviews, Gary 👍🏼
I don't really see the benefit of plonking the pie on top of the mash, just trying to be different I guess, they should be next to each other, and on a plate! 😄
I'd also prefer the gravy to come separate so I can add as much as I want as I'm munching my way through the meal.
It looked like a good bit of food though 👍🏼
Excellent food and I thought nice presentation 👍
its not different though many pub are doing that. it looks tall but when you are looking at paying £4 for bit of mash. those are expensive potatoes they are using
@@davidsworld5837
I think I need to go to better pubs in that case! 😄
Totally agree 👍
You show such restraint when you are eating Gary. I’d want to dive in to it all straight away!
Those chips looked good too- well done cameraman!! Great review again lads 😘
That’s very kind to say thank you very much, Carol 🌹
🎶Who ate all the pies? Who ate all the pies?... not the poor cameraman🎶 🥺🤭
That pie, mash and gravy looked lush. Glad CM got himself some chips but he should have stopped you nicking them! 😆
He was too slow 😂😂😂
Hello our friend Gary, another good watch & definitely requires a plate rather than a bowl, being a huge gravy lover, good looking pie too, keep em coming in Gary. Claire, Si & Dash xxx
Hello Claire, Si and Dash, I hope you’re all well, this was good but not outstanding I though5 as it specialises in Pies it would be that step better 🤷♂️
Gary, your reviews are excellent and so entertaining - especially on these cold winter nights. This video though had my fiancee and I in hysterics though... "The cameraman has got himself some chips; greedy porker..." - then you proceeded to keep pilfering them!!! Hilarious! Thanks Gary - you really brighten us up.
Very kind of you Phil. Glad you're both enjoying them - he's had enough food recently!
Thanks Gary another excellent video. Firstly, I think that the bowl is fine but you definitely need a spoon. Also, please don’t ever reveal who your cameraman is like with the Stig on top gear. Once he was revealed, his mystery was lost forever so keep your excellent cameraman hidden would be my say by the way, his camera work and the way the videos put together is absolutely first class well done keep up the good work.
Thank you so much for the positive comments about the cameraman, he is so good at what he does and helps me when as usual I make mistakes however he has to stop eating on the job 😂😂😂
Looks like a proper pie. The best pies I had was in primary school and the dinner ladies would make a sausage pie it was unbelievable ❤️❤️❤️👌👌👌👌
That sound so good and a brilliant idea in my book 😊
I really like this chap, he has great presentation, shows fair and balanced judgment, and he's very personable.
That’s very kind to say thank you 😊
I love your honest reviews and the way you give the review. You don't just throw out 10 out of 10's to everything you like, unlike some other UA-cam reviewers.
Appreciate you watching and commenting thank you 👍
Exactly,I think I know to whom you refer.
Nothing makes a better meal than a proper gravy 😊, that is what a proper pie is ❤, looked delicious, although I would have preferred this on a plate 😊 thanks for keeping these reviews coming Gary 😊❤
Your mote than welcome Trudy and thank you for commenting 🤗
I must say that's a very smart looking shop, really fitting for a vibrant city like Manchester. Fascinating to see the stylistic differences between old school Pie n Mash shops with the new wave fancier kind, like Mothermash. The plating, ingredients, decor, lettering, all quite nice. Some days traditional is best, some days it's nice to treat yourself to something fresh and innovative.
Glad you enjoyed it and I agree ☝️
That pie looked delicious. This is another place I must go and try soon. Great video again Gary. 👍
So good you should Matthew 👍
Beautiful looking dish, mate! Definitely a bowl for me - keeps all that delicious gravy from spilling. That outside seating area looks amazing. And bloody good value too. Cheers, Gary!
Thank you for watching and commenting really appreciated 👍
Looks like a cracking meal Gary, very different but lovely presentation 🤤 yum.
Looks really nice but would prefer it on a plate myself personally ,love your videos though , something calming about them and always makes me hungry , love how you take the time to reply to so many viewers aswell you deserve all the luck with the channel growth keep em coming
That’s because I really appreciate everyone watching and commenting and genuinely feel humbled, personally thank you for watching and commenting. 👍👍👍
Now that looked outstanding!!! A proper pie ! Thanks for sharing Gary.
Thanks for watching!
Very envious watching you eat that, Gary! Looked absolutely fantastic, loved the way it was presented too. The chips looked really good also😊
I think the sore point in this vid was somebody saying chips at bottom were limp and not crispy after eating all the ones on top, poor cameraman
Good presentation I agree Sheila and nice chips as well 😊
A pie is a pie, is a pie. Whether the crust is on the top, or all round or on the bottom, it is still a pie. One of the best kept secrets to British food is pies. You seldom see them when traveling the world, which makes pies almost unique to Britain. As for fillings, it is a huge choice, from fish to beef to chicken all the way to fruit. Thanks for sharing again. I love this type of pie, food of the soul.
Anytime. Thank you for watching
PIEtastic !! That pie looked scrumptious and It was clear to see you enjoyed it, and the non-seasoned mash and Gravy. "I need a spoon"... lol...made me smile as there was the teaspoon right beside you but as we all saw, you didn't need it in the end. Would love to know what seasoning they put on the chips, or what spuds they use, or what oil they use ....
From the Ministry Of Plates...Dear Mr Gary. We have today closed down GNPC based on your 'Plate Citation' given in your review. I left them with the paperwork so that they can aPIEal my decision. We thank you for bringing this to our attention. Mr P. Late. Executive Officer In Charge of Plates.
That was a really funny comment Neil. very good 😊
Super review once again Gary, thanks...One to try when in the city!!
You should you will enjoy 😉
That looked beautiful, it's got my taste buds going. Looks a really nice relaxing place. Wish the family all the success they deserve with their business.
I hope so too excellent restaurant with brilliant standards 😊
Second. Love Gary videos as builds up hunger - willing to always give it a go. Whats happened to Rosie Lee Tea? Pie is awesome but you need some carrots and broccoli ?
True need some vegetables next time 😊
Now THAT is a PIE ~ Proper Northern fare with amazing gravy & camera man's chips to top it off ! I'm in heaven just watching you tucking into that pie ! I do agree though that a plate would be better than the bowl it was served in. Minor grievance though. Top place.
It certainly was Robert top quality 👍
Now that's a PIE, great presentation and a bowl all day long.
Nice that it was shredded chicken rather than chunks.
And you did have a spoon 😂
Glad you enjoyed it and definitely need a spoon 👌
Gary,
Great North Pie Co.
Absolutely immense!
Now, i not excatly a huge pie fan, but the presentation & the actual pie itself looked amazing!
Bowl or plate? the food was too good to even care about that 😂
The chips, well... Believe it or not, thats excatly how i like them, brown in colour slightly soggy & bendy! Lol Perfect!!
The price lets be honest, £4 for mash, I'd say over priced.. but... It was a quality bit of food so expected! & Happy to pay it 😊
Quality Camera work, & a Great review Gary!
Cheers 🍻
Thanks Tel, much appreciated mate. Glad you liked the pie even though you're not a fan.
Would love to see you review a Sunday roast at native hotel in Manchester, they even have a dedicated cauliflower cheese menu. Great video as always
Will take a look Roger thank you 👍
Would have looked out of this world. If the pie was on a plate surrounded by mash ,mushy peas and gravy mmmmmm lovely. Great review cheers
Agreed...but real mushy peas not very expensive crushed garden peas 🤣
That would be magical 😊
Good stuff Gary. Really liked the look of the place. I am quite a fan of a more spare menu. It helps with the speed of service and the freshness of the food, at least in my experience. Of course, we are all pleased to see a proper pie this time.
Totally agree good comment 👍
You've hit the nail on the head, the food arrives quickly and hot. They can turn the tables in about 60 minutes. It just works and the quality sings, plus the price is excellent for a hot meal in a big city.
Oh the satisfaction seeing a Southerner awkwardly dipping a chip in gravy. The chips look perfect.
Haha it's superb
Gary is the best food reviewer on the net. He tries food of all types and gives honest, fair opinions. And he just seems like such a nice bloke.
I get sick of reviewers who only review food like "sauteed pigs bladder with anchovies and and capers served on a deconstructed Cornish pasty base with a raspberry and tarragon jus" and other inedible garbage like that. The food he tries is the sort of food most of us like, not the expensive Michelin starred crap that predominantly puts presentation and cooking skill ahead of taste.
Thanks so much. I try to do a mixture of places that we could all eat at 😃
That serving is a thing of beauty.
Seasoning is such a personal thing...when I cook for her indoors I dare not add salt .
Excellent presentation Seamus and lovely flavours 👌
Definitely should have been served on either a plate or large shallow bowl. I'd prefer to see the pie and mash side-by-side.
Good call Carol 👍
When I see the quilted jacket, I know it’s a new Gary video. 👍 Keep up the good work Gary you are knocking it out of the park with your affable style, and no nonsense reviews. I’m looking forward to the Whitby fish and chips.
Now after this I’m hungry so see ya.
Thanks, will do and a lovely comment really appreciated 👍
I agree about a plate in preference to a dish... looked like a good scoff though, and with a 25% discount, result!
Agree with you well done for them for giving discount
I wish we could find pies of that calibre further down south! And my sympathies to the cameraman who was watching his delicious chips steadily diminish in front of his eyes!
Should’ve eaten them quickly then lol 😂😂😂
Great video again, the pie, mash and gravy are traditionally servered in a bowl, as they would of been in a cook shops. The pastry is made with Therlmere water... And it makes the best pastry.. Thank you for sharing...
Great information John thank you 😊
Gary, it's no problem, I,m a Lancashire lad , so I can connect with your experience up here, I,ll give you one recommendation, try a steak pudding from "Guys Hamlet" it's a great place at Billsborrow j32 M6 , it's a pub and hotel but its a replica of a medieval village, set on the canal side, they keepba gsntastic pint of Timothy Taylors Landlord, check it out, and treat yourself, I,m notjing to do with the place, its one of out day of t targets, DO NOt, go on a Sunday, all the best John.
My wife steals my chips all the time as well. I feel for the cameraman.
Lol poor cameraman at least he had some chips 🍟😂
Loved the review and the pie! You can't beat a good pie with great gravy! Nice to see you in Manchester, close to my old city of Salford, but having lived in Malvern for over 25 years I doubt I'll get up there but who knows?
Dirty old town, one of my all time favourites (try singing but really rubbish lol) the pie and gravy was amazing 👍👍
That's the kind of meal you want in this weather, Gary. Wouldn't have thought you missed out with the lack of ginger and lemon coming through, I'd say it didn't really need it. The chips looked a bit like 'new season' potatoes when they tend to be a bit greasy and sweet, but still tasty.
You get a pie and mash with onion gravy, cameraman gets a bowl of chips which you proceed to pinch from right under his nose! Surprised he didn't lamp you one!!
Cappuccino with a pie?! Where's the pint of nut brown ale?! Maybe you snook a cheeky Scotch into it, in which case you're forgiven 😂!
Great post as always, pal 👍.
Haha, I knew someone would pull me up on the Cappucino. You must know my weird (and wonderful...) ways by now! Much appreciated mate, how is your dad doing?
@@GaryEats He passed away in peace New Year's Day, mate. When he watched your channel, he thought you were actually there due to dementia and other things but, tbh, sad as we are that he's passed away, some of the things he said at the screen to you were hilarious! E.g 'What yer ordered all that for?!? Yer nevver gonna eat all that' , 'Yer always eatin', how come there's no fat on yer? Seen more fat on a butcher's pencil'' 'Yer shirt collar needs ironin' , 'Don't they serve Black & Tan?'
The comedy helped to balance out the pain!
Your channel has helped not only my Dad in his last days but all of us so we could laugh through the tears - in one vid he thought you were Phil Daniels in Quadraphenia taking him out for a pie in London - I should never have lent him that DVD 😂..
Thanks for asking, pal. Keep up the great posts. Looking forward to you finding the best Beef & Oyster pie when you go to Ireland.
👍
I'm really sorry to hear that. I hope you and your family ok. I'm glad that the channel helped and I want to wish you all the best and thank you for your kind comments as always. Your dad was most certainly correct in all of his judgements about me.
Anytime. Thank you.
@@GaryEats He was most certainly correct about his judgements of me, too! 😂. Blunt but true.
👍
I agree, the pie and mash would have been better on a plate, with a gravy jug on the side. Still, it looked amazing
It certainly was Christine absolutely lovely 👌
Hi Gary. Great review. Looked really enjoyable. The presentation looked like a castle on top of a hill of mash with a moat of gravy around it! Chips did look a bit greasy, but that can happen anywhere. ... 25%discount is brilliant in this day and age. Best of luck to the family running this restaurant. Keep up the great work, Gary and cameraman!!!
Excellent comment and really appreciated thank you 😊
Really look forward to your reviews, thanks. Looked like a wet lard pastry use more in the North that's why the bottom was not soggy unlike London that uses short crust pasty for the bottoms designed to get soggy. Loved the fact the decor was contemporary instead of Victorian. Only qooce I have in Cincy is a frozen Mary Calander Chix pie. Make me home sick. Thanks!
Now that is knowledge Derrick thank you 😊
That looked like a great plate of pie, mash and gravy, mate. Definitely have to visit this place next time we're going up north. It's really nice comfort food when it's cold and wintery. Another great review, Gary, keep up the fabulous work and have yourself an absolutely wonderful rest of your day. Speak to you soon, I am a bit busy these days. Cheers! 🍻🙂
Me too Frank don't worry. Hope you're well mate and we will catch up very soon. Hope you're doing well at work.
@@GaryEats lots of work these days, huge COVID and flue pressure, so it's off your speciality and on to the COVID unit. Pluss emergency surgery's, so unfortunately we're quite busy these days.
Whats happening gary heard bout these pies there mean't to be top drawer tasty plenty of fillings look's scrumptious and I do like a well done chip....👌
Excellent pie and quality Johno 👍
What’s brilliant about these Manchester food reviews is simple. For the first time ever I’ve got to see and hear the places that exist within my own city!
Giving myself an opportunity to visit the various places with confidence. Would never have tried any of these venues if it wasn’t for Gary and his camera man. Try and leave the camera mans chips alone Gary?!
Glad you enjoyed them as we certainly enjoyed Manchester, but the chips were excellent lol 😂
Great considered review as always. I would also have mixed feelings on the gravy acting as a moat at the bottom. Bit of a balancing act and makes it harder to regulate the gravy. But also I wouldnt like it soggy either just sitting on gravy as thats wasted crispy pastry. Knowing this I would ask for gravy on the side and regulate it in myself.
Good point, wanted more gravy to be honest 👍
That's a proper pie.
Nice to hear Phil 👌
Now thats a pie! Love the way it was presented - practical and stylish and didn’t it look good. Hope cameraman was allowed a few. Hips cos they were spot on as well. You’re certainly finding Manchesters best food spots 👍
Carol thanks for watching and commenting, the chips the few I had lol tasted lovely and the meal was well worth the price, Manchester has toooooo many excellent food places to enjoy 😉
That looked extremely nice especially the chips and gravy - proper northern food!. Excellent Gary you have done Manchester proud thank you.
Manchester done me proud 😊
Hi Gary what did you think of Manchester in general? @@GaryEats
Enjoyed it mate. Nice city.
Another good review Garry.
That what you get up North. Proper food for proper people. Puts those cockney pies and liquor to shame and the chips look spot on.
Not far from Manchester so will be giving this place a visit of the back of your review.
Won’t be having a coffee though 😜
Easy Tony nothing wrong with pie and mash however it was a good pie and lovely gravy, had to have a coffee as so cold 👍
Great pie and mash plus gravy. Only problem chips. Good colour but very soggy. Keep them coming gary.
Got to honest Phil the chips tasted so good 😊
Hey Gary. Glad to hear that you will be coming up to SCOTLAND, HEAVEN ON EARTH! I must say that for a Highlander, I do love Edinburgh, (in Gaelic DUNEDIN. Note the Scots who migrated to New Zealand named DUNEDIN in NZ after Old REEKIE aka EDINBURGH). Don't forget to try the Haggis, Tatties & Neaps with a Whisky Sauce (Drooling just thinking about it). Stay away from the Deep Fried Mars Bars, but do have an *IRN BRU.* I cannot think of the name of the Sea side are where an crusty old Scots Fisherman used to sell LOBSTER and CRAB ROLLS for £7.00. You got a half Lobster in a crusty hot buttered roll. for that. I will do a search for that location and get back to you. BTW, you have to treat yourself to an *Arbroath smokie.* Whilst I can get my IRN BRU here in Australia, I would *KILL* for an Arbroath smokie. Don't forget to try Traditional Scottish Cullen Skink. Don't forget to check out The Wallace memorial at Stirling, Glen Coe (never mention the name of Campbell when at the memorial) and check out my old home town of *DRUMNADROCHIT. Wish I were there right now. Safe travels my friend.
Stay safe my friend. Cannot wait for the haggis, tatties and neaps!!
That looked fabulous, and perfect winter food! Think that if you have gravy, you want the bowl, and a plate would suffice if you were just having Pie & Chips etc.
Completely agree Marky thank you for commenting 👍
Loving this review, Even with the very generous discount I still think that plate of tucker is good value for money, the fact that it is butter pastry shows that the owners are not skimping on quality ingredients, the vast majority of pies out there are made with pastry made with veg oil or margarine, Butter may be more expensive to use but gives a better texture and taste, thanks Gary, Gav
Thanks Gav. All the best.
The Lancashire cheese and onion pie is one of the tastiest cheese pies I’ve ever had. The pastry is crisp but light and not dry,the cheese they use in the pie is dewlays Lancashire cheese which is very flavoursome (and can be purchased from Aldi if anyone’s interested )and the onions still have a little bit of texture to them and seem to have a slightly pickled flavour which just adds to that extra depth of flavour. They are expensive but we’ll worth it as an occasional treat,I paid £4.50 from the food section in my local garden centre.
Wow Craig that sounds absolutely lovely, I wish I had the cheese and onion pie now as the onion gravy would have worked perfectly together 👍
Oh yes i liked that pie. For this weather really homely food. Everything was good about it. The dish was ok and it keeps the gravy and masher hotter than an open plate would. Chips ok not the best but as the taste was good and you could them dip in the gravy they improved. Price ok. I would have given a 9.
Glad you enjoyed it and thank you for watching and commenting 👍
I’ll be going here on Friday after your review, by the way I went to the place called This & That as you recommended, it is excellent value for money and delicious curries.
Thanks once again, Gary 👍
That is fantastic to hear, Mike. Thank you very much for letting me know.
Another great review Gary! I always look forward to them.
At home I like a bowl because I’m clumsy and it’s easier to keep away from my cat who tries to inspect all my food, but not for food that requires a knife. You’re right that is awkward. One thing I really appreciate about Chinese food is that it comes in bite size pieces. It goes straight from the takeout container into a bowl for me.
Thanks Jean.
I forgot to add. I don't need my meat shredded. I left my fifth birthday behind some time ago. I find it peculiar that anywhere other than a jerk chicken / bar-b-que place would do this.
And to the commenter who thought that setting the pie in the centre of the mash and surrounding the mash with gravy was "very creative". I would suggest that you take yourself down to your local art gallery and gaze with wonder upon all the creativity contained therein. But not if you have a heart condition, in case it causes a cardiac 'event'.
Ease yourself into it slowly by starting with colour by numbers.
Truly enjoyable channel. 🎉🎉🎉. My Japanese Bride of 34 years loves your voice. She is now saying "Let's give it a go." So Sweet. Blessings from Texas,USA. 👍😊❤
Wow, thank you!
Good pie review gary, yeah the pie would be better on a flat plate with a jug of gravy. By coincidence the day before i was in a worcester pub having a conversation about Fray Bentos steak and kidney pies which i found are vastly overpriced at the local Asda at £3.25. But the astute bar person said they were £1.50 at home bargains. Went and bought two...delicious! Googled it, turns out some guy has developed an after shave that smells like a fray bentos steak and kidney pie...sounds like winner to me. Maybe you could front an advertising campaign for it 😂
Hmmmmmm not really sure my Old Spice would be happy lol 😂
That looked great Gary, I was briefly a student in Manchester in the early 90s, and we weren't eating like that let me tell you! I'm with you on it being easier to eat on a plate, not hard to get a plate with a slightly higher lip to contain that gravy. For me I think chunks of chicken and a bit more sauce in the pie might have been better and helped those other herbal flavours come through better maybe?
Lol. The modern age eh Greeno. I think you're right mate.
Yes... I'm finally managing to guess how you're going to rate your videos. I also went for 8.5 our 10! To bowl or not to bowl. Definitely should have been a plate.
Yep, I'm definitely becoming too predictable!
Gary, another wonderful presentation. What a hearty, stick to your ribs meal that must have been. This one really does make me think you've got the greatest gig going. Well done.
Indeed. Haha, thank you. They're not all that great!
Yep ..... this is my kind of idea of Pie Nirvana - proper ones rather than those top pastry crust interlopers. Gary, for me, it has to be a plate job and I'd love the gravy served in a container so I could whack it around where I wanted it .... especially as I'd require mushy peas in addition.
Hey, talking about pies ..... if ever you are scoffing around the Bolton and surrounds area, you can get what is called a Whist Pie - look like a pork pie but they are beef and lovely .... bit of Googling will tell you all you need to know.. My 1st mother in law, who lived in the area, introduced me to them .... the only positive thing to come out of that relationship !!!!!!
Lol sorry Roger but the last part made me laugh
I thought the pie looked top-drawer and clearly everything you ate tasted great. My personal preference would have been for a plate with the mash at the side of, not under, the pie and gravy served seperately. Whoever recommended this place, well done.
Thanks David. I'm going to take credit for this one, it was my find! Haha.
Kudos Gary, all the best, David
Oh those chips look great. The pie looked even better, mash and gravy. I am so happy that the chips had a nìce flavour. Great and honest review as per normal from you. Plate. Bowls are for desserts.worth every penny
Thanks so much Ann. Much appreciated.
Looked very nice Gary. The pie is practically the national dish of Australia!
Best regards from Tassie.
Many thanks Anne 👍
Another honest review, and because of your review of mother mash at Covent Garden we ate their last weekend and absolutely loved it. Thanks!
That’s absolutely fantastic to hear Kevin thank you for letting me know 👌
What an amazing looking pie 🥧👌🙌👏🏻👏🏻
Fully packed, nice pastry, well presented and the discount. The chips looked so good.
Either one of two things … either a spoon or maybe a bowl that’s a little wider but less deep, more shallow just to get in,with a spoon - would be my ideal. Superb Gary
Fantastic Glenda. Have to agree with you on the last line.
Hi Gary and Mr Cameraman,
One thing i dislike about pies is when there is not enough filling, but there was no problem here.
The cost when you take Mr cameraman's chips off (well the ones the poor chap was left) was more than fair i think, if it was not 25% off i would have pulled a face at the mash at £4.
Chris.
Poor cameraman he was neglecting his duty 😂😂 the discount helped definitely 👍
Another good review from Gary. Keep going we love to watch them
Thank you! Will do, and thanks for watching and commenting 👌
Tremendous value plus a 25% discount is even better. I think I prefer the bowl because it contains the gravy better than plate - although you should be given a spoon! Chips looked greasy and limp though take your word on their good flavour. Always like to support family-owned businesses - never chains. Great review as ever Gary!
Great point and thank you for your kind comments 😊
Hello Again Gary. I just remembered the name of the wee town near Arbroath where yo can get the finest Arbroath Smokies. It is called *AUCHMITHIE.* The smokies from here are to die for. The other town I was thinking of where finest seafood came from and from where you can get those first class Lobster rolls is at *OBAN* on the West Coast at a place called *THE GREEN SHACK* which is run by a passionate man of the seas named John OGDEN. John speaks in a colourful language that would make MARINES BLUSH, but he has a heart of gold. I don't kbnow if the Green Shack is still open or whether John is still alive. I don't know how much time you have on your hands but Arbroath to Oban is quite distant. You have to travel from the East coast to the West coast, but it is worth visiting.
PS, I just made a phone call to a friend who lives in Oban, Unfortunately, John passed away in January 2023 after a long battle with cancer.
Thanks Angus. Sorry to hear about that.
Now that looks like a pie and no service charge and give it to the server if the are good, thumbs up!! My Nan made the best pastry, she said the less you work it and the colder you work it, as in no hands, she used a fork the better it is.
Can’t beat mum or Nan definitely 😊
When your order arrived first thing I thought was it's going to be difficult to cut and eat pie from a bowl ! Cute presentation but much better on a similar style bowl but three times bigger . BTW, going to try very soon. Thanks again for a great review!
Very kind to say, but with so much gravy a bowl was better 👍
The best roast in Manchester is in native hotel, its called ducie street warehouse and is located just by picadilly train station. It's a solid 10 for me
Wish I knew about that before I came back.
@@GaryEats next time! It’s worth it 🙏🏻
Looked great and I like the presentation in the bowl. Great value with the discount 👍. Fair score👌
Thanks so much 👍
Another great place, Gary! It sure seems delicious and I can only imagine that gravy...
It was perfect gravy, and a lovely restaurant 👍
When I first moved to Phoenix, AZ, a group of kids would come around and sell homemade tamales made by their mother at home. They would take your order and then a week later, deliver them. A few years later, the mother opened a tiny shop just down the street from me. A few years after that, she moved up the street to a much bigger place. 18 years since I have moved here and her shop is now a restaurant to eat in or take out and she supplies all the Mexican restaurants with homemade tamales.
Very nice Katie.
Your videos bring a sense of comfort to me having just lost both my parents whithin the space of two months! Thank you Gary keep up the good work 👏
sorry for your loss
@bad_dog4648 thank you
I'm extremely sorry to hear that Marcus. I wish you all the best, if you need anything - just email me.
@GaryEats thank you Gary very much appreciated 🙏 just keep making your great video's for us all to enjoy
I will do. All the best to you.
Hi Gary I’m sorry lol but I’d have to ask for a spoon! I’m on a diet so I’m drooling over your pie.. love chicken & ham and mash potatoes are the ultimate comfort food
Spot on Julie.
I've just recently discovered your excellent channel. I'm glad you enjoyed the pie. We went a couple of years ago. I had the nicest pie I've ever had. It was a 4 or 5 cheese pie. Washed down with a pint of Titanic Cherry Porter. These pies are proper delicious. Your bang on about the quality of pastry and that gravy! I'm looking forwards to binging though your back catalogue of videos. Cheers.
Thank you so much. That sounds delicious Alec
That looked awesome!!! Just missing some greens/mushy peas, 8.5/10 spot on! GM Rich
So good good score Richard 👍
Just caught up on last 4 videos, as always, a great watch.
£7.50 Indian excellent value.
Mexican the same, looked very appetising and fresh.
The lamb chop was high end on the money for me, and chips in a bucket generally means very little thereof.
But this pie and mash looked excellent. Really did. What it misses is a couple of slices of thick cut buttered bloomer bread to wipe it all round.
But oh those "chips"?😮 Shocking. First impression of a plate of chips is key. They reminded me of those new potato chips some fish and chip shops pass off in summer. Full of oil and shiny.
But it's the pie and mash was real deal.
So scores on doors?
Cheap Indian a solid 8.5
Mexican again a solid 8.5
Lamb? Could only go 6 as expensive, small and dodgy chips.
And this one? 8.5 (but a 3 for the chips).
Appreciated you catching up on them Steevo. I think your scores a very very solid.
Wow that looked amazing I love the presentation in the bowl, the pie looked so delicious and nice creamy mash 😋 the gravy looked yum and proper homemade chips what more can you ask for, what a place to go for some nice warm comfort food, keep them coming looking forward to more mouth watering reviews 😊
Very kind of you as always Jay. All the best
On a large plate with a gravy boat would have been nice. But it looked lovely.
It was Alan lovely 😊
I must start playing the Lottery! Once again I went for your score, 8.5. Plate or bowl? Advantages/disadvantages to both, but I'd respect the owners' judgment. The 25% off was excellent, even better if it hadn't been flagged up in advance. Those Lancastrians know how to make pies - my late wife was from Preston and her father was a trencherman, knew every variety of pie. Unfortunately, v unlikely I'll get up there again, but if I do...
Email me your three numbers and I’ll choose three and “let’s give it a go “ 👍
I think the Chips were made from waxy potatoes personally my choice. Better flavour (imo) but not fluffy hence a bit limp! Anyway they looked very good.
Excellent chips Jonathan thank you for watching and commenting 👍
I don't even like food to be honest, but Gary's uploads are so relaxing I just can't help but watch them, I wish you the best in life Gary, Kindest Regards
I appreciate that and also sorry to hear that, take care 👍
