heng su ping I think he knows. Right after the movie Bohemian Rhapsody was released, some people caught him out and about off guard around London. Even as elderly as he is, having been out of the spotlight for 20 years, people still recognized him! He was in shock and disbelief and I saw him put his hands over his face. At first I thought he was upset that someone said, “ there is John Deacon from Queen!”. No he wasn’t. He was really shocked and overjoyed. He started signing autographs for probably 30 or 40 different people. It was such a sweet video. You might be able to find it on UA-cam but it tested me up to see that.

@john smith I don't know about that. According to interviews I've seen with Brian and Roger, He prefers to live in isolation. They don't even talk to him much, however, he is still involved in the financials pertaining to Queen. One thing for sure, if Deacy IS working it's by choice. John has enough money for his children's, children, children. I wonder if he still picks up his bass from time to time. Everybody loves Deacy. I just hope he knows that.

In an interview in the late 1980's John was asked "what is the difference between writing a song with Freddie and writing a song with the other members of Queen." And John said " Freddie is the only one that I have worked on a song with". I think really that that says it all.... John and Freddie were much closer than most people realize.

It's often said that John retired in 1997 after this performance but the truth is he retired when Freddie died and the only time he has been willing to come back out into the public eye--which he seems to hate--is in order to pay tribute to Freddie. He came out of retirement only for the tribute concert, to finish the Made in Heaven album with the vocals Freddie left them, to record the song for Freddie "No One But You" and this tribute to Freddie. That speaks volumes. God bless you, Deacon. We still love you!

This was incredibly sad to watch knowing the circumstances and back story. We know just how sad John felt by his eyes and lack of smile. Also, Bri looks a bit lost while playin’ as well. He looked over where Freddie would’ve been and had that look of sudden recognition that he’s not there. It’s like Bri mentally knows Freddie’s gone but spiritually still expected him to be there...if that makes any sense?! He’d gone on record before saying how strange it was to play Queen music for others fronting or singing lead ‘cos Freddie not only sang, but he was their maestro they’d looked to for cues to change-up or rap-up songs while playin’ live. Freddie often was settle with it at most shows but we clearly see him conduct them at Live Aid. He was the one telling Rog, Bri, and Deacy when to end the songs whenever he’d held his arm up w/his finger pointing up, then bring it down to stop any song they were playin’. You can even hear him sing “Play it one more time...” at the end of “Hammer to Fall!” Freddie orchestrated and timed their set right on to the very last second at that gig. If you’d missed that part..just rewatch the performance and pay attention to the lighting system. The yellow light is flashing/blinking and he’d held his arm up ‘till the very last second and threw it down just as the light turn a solid red! He was very technical in that sense and the guys have all said they missed that aspect of his live performances with them.
This performance was bitter sweet ‘cos it was for a worthy cause and got Maylor to dust-off their instruments for more live performances together. Not so much for John...but I luv that he’d likely done it for Freddie’s memory.

H.Y. PAIK...Sorry if my post made you feel sad by me giving every detail ‘bout Freddie’s onstage cues to the other band mates. That definitely wasn’t my intention at all. I simply wanted to convey what Bri & Rog have said after playin’ at the memorial concert for Freddie where his presence was missed onstage. Bri said how he’d got caught-up playin’ and momentarily looked over for Freddie’s cue and realized he wasn’t there. How he’d forgotten in that moment of him playin’ that Freddie wasn’t there. After hearin’ Bri say this, I’d rewatched the concert and see where Deacy’s lookin’ to Rog for his cues and Bri’s lookin’ at Deacy for cues. God only knows who Rog was lookin’ to for those cues.

🙋🏾‍♀️ Susie Q...Yes! Deacy would often lick his lips while singing Liar with Freddie and looked a bit disjointed in the official TOTP video just after the “All-day-long” part. It’s like he was walking ‘round in the same spot lost momentarily. I ‘spose he wasn’t as spontaneous as Freddie was and when Freddie stepped away (catchin’ Holy Ghost)...it left Deacy momentarily standing there holdin’ his bass & shakin’ his head. I’d just caulked it up to nerves or him not really knowin’ what he’d was ‘spose to do. Then he came to look to do their part in Liar at subsequent shows. ☺️ He even rushed up to Freddie during one of those shows with anticipation (I don’t remember which one though)...but it was included on one of those Deacury dedicated “All-day-long” videos. Now that you’ve pointed this out here, I can see his tic quite easily ✌🏾!

@@Motown-1966 - He also licked his fingers when playing. Bass strings are thick and heavy and the old flat wound strings could really hurt your fingers so it was a bit of a lubricant to soften the strings and from what I saw, he seldom used a pick, just his fingers, so a 2 hour concert could murder his fingers even with callouses. Those strings aren't used much now. My own are "round wound".
I think the poor guy was pretty nervous much of the time but his love of playing was stronger. He relaxed after a while with the aid of his little bar behind the amp for later shows. Not the best way to overcome his shyness but he never missed a beat. Actually, In Dragon Attack at Montreal, after Brian's solo it looked like Brian got out of synch and he crossed the stage where Deaky gave him a countdown with his arm to get him back on the beat. One show where he really seemed to have a ball was at the Wembley..."You're so Square, baby I don't care" medley. He laughed out loud at Freddie stealing the Bobbie's hat. LOVE DEAKY! His shyness stood out so much with three "show offs". It was always frustrating that they showed him so seldom.
The show you referred to is Live at the Rainbow, 1974. He lunges out of the darkness!!!!!!! GAAAAA!

SwingRiots - I doubt it. Brian also said "John found it painful to play with them". John had his emotions and problems to deal with (having admitted to depression even before Freddie died) and did what was best for him and his family (and maybe his sanity) so I respect his choice but...as a fan since the 70's, DAMN! I do miss him. He was an amazing song writer and musician and from all I've heard, a dear, sweet but shy man who valued family over fame, having lost his own father at eleven. The Paris show was Jan. '97, the "No One but You" video was recorded Oct. '97 so he did perform once more in the studio just for one song.

So many fans wish to see Deacon one more time on stage but we all know in reality it won't happen any more than Freddie coming back. He chose to retire for good from music and to not even appear for the Rock 'N Roll Hall of Fame induction shows it.
