@Anders Enzo i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site on google and Im trying it out atm. Looks like it's gonna take quite some time so I will reply here later with my results.
I know this is a way old post, but Ian I LOVE your slow backswing and smooth acceleration through the ball. I have found MUCH better results in consistency and strike pattern when I make an effort to start my swing like your doing. Very nice!
Being a similar swing speed to Ian; I can only assume he would get the same result as I do with the 7 wood and that is too much spin, especially when hitting from the turf. It's not too bad in good conditions, but as soon as you're hitting into the wind, you get some undesirable ball flights.
Ian I wonder if you got a 7 wood and turned it down would it meet that yardage that you were looking for. The sim2 5 wood look great but maybe the 7 wood would be more ideal. Just a thought
I love a driving iron but it’s just not offering much versatility and doesn’t fill a gap in distances. I might have to let go of my 3 wood... mizuno 19° hybrid is so hot almost 275 of the tee and moon ball launcher of the deck
It’s a 1000% the way Olaf, multiple bounce and grind options in the wedges is also something to think about. Obviously the variety stops where your budget stops! For me it’s 15 maybe a 16th club this year.
My 5 wood is the most consistent thing in my bag- TM Jetspeed 19 degree. It's old, but soooo good. I couldn't hit my 3 wood though, so I replaced it with another wedge.
Hey that club is a BEAST! Have it and love it,ball just jumps off the face.Found one in mint condition in the local golf galaxy preowned for 19 dollars!!😎👍
I have an older king cobra 5 wood and I love it, its definitely my most versatile and consistent club as well. It's the one I can always rely on for a solid, straight hit on both the fairway and rough. A cple friends use a hybrid or 2 driving iron, but why the hell would I give up my most reliable club? But even if it doesn't go as far as some of the newer cobra 5 woods, I wouldn't risk switching something that always works for me.

I had the same problem with gapping and went with a Callaway Super Hybrid turned up 1* to 18* with a Ventus Black 9TX. It’s a little shorter than a 5 wood, wider than a normal hybrid for more distance and forgiveness and now I can carry it 245-250. Had to redo the bag and now have a 22* Sim hybrid that is my 220-225 club. Or my 4 driving iron, depending on the course and conditions.
This reinforces my decision to do a full bag fitting. I switched from a 5 wood to a hybrid many yrs ago. Thinking I want to put a 3, 5 and maybe a 7 wood in play. Can't wait until Mr. Ford allows us to get things moving again.

After struggling to find a hybrid I loved and didn’t turn over too much, turned down a TSI2 7 wood a degree to 20 and love it. High, easy to hit, consistent. Thanks to Shawn at Miles of golf in Ann Arbor MI for a great fit
I replaced the Mizuno ST200 5 wood with the CLK 19 degree hybrid with the 2021 Fujikura Vista Pro shaft. Favorite club in my bag. Deadly accurate and consistent.
Ian helped me get into a TSI 2 5 wood with a Ventus red and I’ll never go back. This 5 wood is incredible - so easy to hit high, land soft and excellent off the tee.
so growing up a 5 wood was 20* now a 5W is an old 4W and a new 7W is an old 5W I think it's about time for companies to put degree numbers on clubs instead of numbered irons and letters. Ian, I think your gap would be filled with a properly fitted 7 wood dropped into 19*
this is going to lead to dropping a wedge, bending the PW to 47/48 degrees and then playing a 52/53 & 58/59 two-wedge combo - this is the exact problem I've always faced - and one of the ways I've addressed it was taking a Mizuno 56/14 wedge, with heel&toe relief, and bending it to 52.5 so that I can have a wedge with a nice useable grind, that I can play around the green - both opening it up for slice-spin & hooding it for draw checkers
@@The_Professional_Hobbiest NIce - I would think of bending that 54 slightly strong to equalize the spacing - and that's my reason for my 52/53 in a 2-wedge setup + PW, it's that I like to have a 3/4 swing scoring shot that comfortably carries (+10-yard) on the longer side of 100 yards - and then also bring it back to 85 yards when I want that shot - thus 52.5/53 is my goto loft + having that heel grind for around the greens
@@wallstreetoneil yes bending makes sense for gapping, but I am really comfortable hitting full shots with my 54, and on a full swing I hit it 120 so it works for me.
This was excellent Ian, glad to see you went with the five wood, I did the same as well for this season,, dropped the 4-H hybrid and went with a five wood, working out very well!
I’m curious to know Mr Fraser if recent on course you play more often came into play during your fit? Was there shots from these experiences that were influencing the direction of your bag fit versus say not knowing what layout your going to manage more frequently? 👍
I did a bag review this year as well. I replaced my 3/5 woods with a 4 wood and added a 2 and 3 hybrid. My bag now is Driver, 4 wood, 2 Hybrid, 3 hybrid, 5-AW, SW, 58*, scotty. I think I closed some gaps and feel like I can hit the hybrids better from the fairway than the woods.
Interesting stuff, chaps. Played for the first time today since October and I can confirm that I've changed. Rather than club changes, I briefly considered a sport change!
Interesting how this works out. In my bag I have. Taylormade Fairways and Mizuno hybrids and irons. That same 22 degree hybrid compliments my 5 wood perfectly. 3w- 265 carry 5w-245 carry 4h-225 carry 5i-212 carry 6i-200 carry The 5 wood is just awesome. Flys ridiculously high. And stops on the green like an iron. They can really save your butt if you make a bad t shot on a par 4 or making it home in 2 on a par 5. Plus they are super fun to hit!!!! 4h is great out of the rough and if it’s a flyer it will fly 240 anyways. I’d say keep the Mizuno in your bag drop the 4 iron and throw the 5 wood in.
I've never ever liked the look of hybrids... never been able to hit them! I've always had a 5 wood in the bag. Mine's lofted up to around 19 degrees for gapping, but it's my favourite club in the bag!
Great session guys. It highlights your recommendations towards having an annual gaping session, which may not necessarily require a change in clubs. It may be a tweak in loft or lie or maybe a change of shaft(s) in woods to maintain or improve gaps between clubs and/or having a switch up FW wood or hybrid for specific courses. Pause for thought when reviewing WITB
I love my woods. Carry my 3W-240and my 5W-220 Just an average carry but they really help me when I need them after hitting a horrible drive or reaching those par 5 on 2 if I’m feeling saucy that day.
I put in a g425 4 hyrbird at 22° in my bag to replace a 4i. I find that hitting that is so much easier compared to my maverik 18° 5 wood. There were times in the past I would be 220 out and think ill hit my 5 wood to get there. I have had some good shots with it, but not all the time. I end up topping it or getting a horrible strike most often now. Probably has to do with the 22° vs 18° difference, idk. But within the last month or 2 I've barely thought about touching my 5 wood. I just go to my 4 hybrid to hit about 190, leave myself a chip in. To me it feels more comfortable and I've had some really great shots with it. I'm considering going from 5 wood to 3 hybrid, unless I can get more consistent with the 5 wood to have that distance
I think one of the advantages of the 5 wood is that on a bad swing day its perfect to use just to get a fade out there from the tee and on par5s you can really go after a club like that and reach and make it stop. And you can grip it down and hit it shorter if thats what you need. So at least to me a hybrid is a less versatile club when we are talking longer distances. But if its a perfect number youre looking at the hybrid might produce that number on a more consistent basis.
Interesting guys. Just as a side note, appreciate Matty not here to nail down production but you may want to check check mic levels. Mikey very quiet, Ian fine. Main titles music way louder than Ian’s mic
I would like to see a gapping conversation about the choice between 2 wedges (with something like 6 or 7 degree gaps) and 3 wedges (the old 50, 54, 58 or whatever) past PW. This really changes your options at the top end of the bag and would allow you to have 2 clubs here which seems like what you are really after.
Seeing as you want to use this out of the rough/semi rough, would you want to test it on those more difficult lies? Could you hit it off longer thicker turf to see how the wood/hybrid gets through or maybe fails to get through as easily?
I took the 5W out of the top of my bag about 3 weeks ago and went back to a Cobra SpeedZone 3W, Titleist 2Iron, SIM 3H & 4H. But, my size dictates a lot of that.
It might be the 2 iron comes out. If it's a fairway finder off the tee, the 5 wood also checks that box, although with a different flight and more versatility off the fairway. Ian will still need that 220-230 club, which might be a higher lofted hybrid or back to a 4 iron.
Ian, you should really try the Ping G425 7 Wood and turn it down to 19.5* from 20.5*, that way you get the open face which you like and the proper loft
Pretty surprised you ended up going with the 5 wood at 245-250 carry, seems like it'll make a pretty big gap down to the 4i. I personally like the versatility of a hybrid and would rather go for a bigger draw 3 hybrid to get a few extra yards than trying to take something off a fairway wood, which never seems like it goes well for me. I guess you get the best of all worlds and can pick your bag day of round so you're never left wanting :)
id honestly love to see a re-test of the tsi2 vs tsi3 fairways with Ian's swing given that it's completely different to matt's. just curious if you'll get completely different results in flight and spin. ps BIG fan of the channel.🤙🏽
I used to play D, 3W, 5W but swapped out the 5W for a hybrid because I found it was way easier for my to hit the hybrid and work it than the 5W. Granted, this was at a time where I couldn't hit a fairway metal to save my life.
I am still about 40% unsure why you wouldn’t want that 5iron spin out of the hybrid... to me spin always meant stopping power, but maybe height is better stopping power? This video is exactly what I’m thinking through in my own bag at the moment, and as soon as Texas summer comes to Austin my 5w is coming out for a driving iron
I love these videos but I think your 5 and 3 woods are going to bunch up a bit at the top of the bag. You had some 255+ carry numbers there. Is that a concern? Dealing with a similar issue currently having 30 yard gaps at the top and hoping for guidance.
I must have missed it and believe me I will rewatch later at lunch when I can... but did Mike or Ian say if the 5 wood or Hybrid was more "forgiving" than the other? or just desired miss? I am stuck between 3hybrid, 5wood, or doing a 4w and mixing 3w, hybrid into 1 club at 4wood. Sadly for me 4Iron, 3Hybrid and 3W are all within 20yards of each other. Dont need all 3
I use Hybrid because I miss the fairway too often and its the only thing that saves me. No way I am good enough to hit a 5 wood out of the rough. Would love to be good enough to run the 5 wood though. Something special about having a matching Driver, 3W and 5W.
This video seems to prove that you could use both, not an either or. The clk was a 4 iron replacement and still looks like it could be. The 5 wood just gaps the top end of the bag. Maybe I misunderstood the testing comp on this one.
Does TXG have the quick fit system on all the fairway woods? When I went to Club Champion and most recently local fitter, neither had the options I needed due to the some fairways being bonded. Specifically I'm trying to get a 220 club and we guess at Epic Speed 7 wood but he only had senior and regular flex bonded.
Is there a fitter in the GTA thatd you recommend if TXG isn't available? Golf town told me an hour for a full bag and that sounded too quick. Thank you
This is an unrelated question I hope you guys answer. I use kbs 105s and wonder if I should switch to a lower spin shaft because from my A to my 6 iron, when I hit a flat green, my ball will spin way back. It’s worse on my short clubs, do you think switching to let’s say a $-taper or modus 120 would be beneficial? Swing speed on 7 iron is 91ish
Should do a “what’s in the bag” with Ian (or maybe all the staff) and included gapping? The gapping conversation is a very interesting one.

Why not get a 7W and crank it down a degree? Then the club sits open to avoid the draw, your get your distance number, and you get more height?
Being a similar swing speed to Ian; I can only assume he would get the same result as I do with the 7 wood and that is too much spin, especially when hitting from the turf.
It's not too bad in good conditions, but as soon as you're hitting into the wind, you get some undesirable ball flights.

Seems like if that Sim2 5-wood is just a bit too long, a 7-wood turned down (while opening the face) might be worth testing.

Ian, you should really try the Ping G425 7 Wood and turn it down to 19.5* from 20.5*, that way you get the open face which you like and the proper loft
I have 3 wood, 5 wood and then a 3 hybrid to fill the gap it gives great options on par 5s and when you duff a tee shot into par 4s
I’m thinking a TSI3 20* hybrid set at C1 (19* and open) and a little shorter shaft might hit your sweet spot
Now the 7 wood test!
Why don’t you try a 7 wood and open it to 20? Might get that 245 carry 🤩
I think you would benefit from a 425 hybrid or 7 wood. My 7 wood is my money club.
I have a 5 wood and a 7 wood in my bag. I only pull out a hybrid and replace my 4 iron with it, if I am playing a course with really thick rough.
Would really love to see the final 15 club bag...
I wish the sim2 TI came in a 7 wood, head size would be like a little hybrid..
Just curious and in case I missed something. What happened to Matty? Great video as always
I went from ping 410 3 hybrid to a Titleist ts2 7 wood and can fit so many more shots with the 7 wood. It was an easy decision for myself.
Who are the three people constantly giving a thumbs down to these videos? Show yourselves.
There was a time when Ian never wanted to change his hybrid.
You should really consider 7 wood as there adjustable and very easy to manipulate. Would you also look at the hy wood, just out of curiosity
Do you think the carry and total distance would be more similar if both clubs had the Ventus 9X on them?
This video seems to prove that you could use both, not an either or. The clk was a 4 iron replacement and still looks like it could be. The 5 wood just gaps the top end of the bag. Maybe I misunderstood the testing comp on this one.
I’m not strong enough and haven’t got the clubhead speed for a long iron so I game a 5 wood and a couple of hybrid’s.
If all your par fives are reachable in two with a good drive, when are you using the 270 yard 3 wood?
How much shorter would you expect a 7 wood to be versus a 5. Driver speed 100-103
How far do you hit 4 and 5 iron, Ian? Can you do a gapping vid?
Interesting the 5w spun less than the hybrid at first... How did they manage that given the size of the respect heads?
5wd at 3wd length is my fave club
Does TXG have the quick fit system on all the fairway woods? When I went to Club Champion and most recently local fitter, neither had the options I needed due to the some fairways being bonded. Specifically I'm trying to get a 220 club and we guess at Epic Speed 7 wood but he only had senior and regular flex bonded.
Is there a fitter in the GTA thatd you recommend if TXG isn't available? Golf town told me an hour for a full bag and that sounded too quick. Thank you
Ian and Mike, You get greater height and distance from the 5 wood, but what do you think you give up that you would have had with the hybrid?
Woods are more difficult to hit in the rough, really where the hybrid shines.
What fitting hossel do you use? I’ve never seen one like that and by the looks of it it allows you to use any shaft with any head?
Hybrid still a better option for the midcap player that would find themselves needing distance from light rough more often?
A Tsi2 or Sim Ti 7 wood turned down ahould fit the bill! I did that to replace my hybrid and wont look back, 4000 spin, 235 carry, and 40 yards peak.
Kinda surprised you didn’t try a tsi2 7 wood and a sim2 7 wood
Why not try a tsi2 hybrid, something in between. That’s exactly what I got. Was hoping for the 3 but the 2 just split that yardage perfectly.
