    Arith, I am fascinated! I had to think a lot about the recent discoveries in psychology in regards to the passing on of traumatic experiences through genes and unspoken rules in families. E.g. trauma caused by wartime.
    Thank you for your work.

      Thank you! I do believe in DNA memory, especially when it comes to traumatic experiences, I think those memories is precisely what helps new generations to survive; the knowledge remains and our survival impulses are the product of traumatic knowledge printed in our DNA.

    The concept of inherited hamingja reminds me of an explanation for reencarnationI read years ago in a book about Buddhism. I can't vouch about the books accuracy, but according to it, our karma and even memories are passed down to another living being after we die. Unlike spiritsm, it was not as if we are born again in a new body; it compared the karma transfer to lighting a new candle with the flame of a dwindling one. So even if one does not think they have a chance to reach nirvana in the current life, they should still pursue good deeds so they do not setback the person who will inherit their karma.

    • @ArithHärger

      Yes there are indeed some parallels which seems to remote to an Indo-European past, probably even Proto-Indo-European. These concepts of reincarnation seem to be more evident in tribal/shamanic communites of the Artic, nowadays. They seemed to have retained such concepts in their traditions precisely due to the Taboos in shamanism itself, which reinforces maintaining oral tradition at all costs.

    The concept is very similar to what is known as Prarabdha in yogic term. Its the accomulated work of a person or a group.
    Each individual has their own Prarabdha and it plays out, shaping our lives.
    Similarly the group we identify ourselves with, has its own work which shape the lives of everyone in the group.
    This continues life after life, until one attain Mukti, or oneness with the divine. And the person becomes a powerful individual, free from all influences...

    What a wonderful song, your voice went straight through me... What a gift 🙏
    So curious, I usually stumble upon such special videos because I need to learn something.. I got my gram's first name as a second. And when my mother got divorced, we both took her last name. And since she's gone, I feel like there should be something I should do. But my health is degrading rapidly.. With 36 I'm thinking about assisted passing.. But I feel like it's not time and there is something I should, can do.. And always when I'm desperate, I see a bird that needs help.. It continued 4 times, it always needed less help (it was always also a different situation) but I always took it as a sign...

    One of your best videos yet! You broke down a complicated topic into understandable terms with terms displayed for clarity! Native American tribes have similar concepts, however, each tribe is distinct in their beliefs and practices, but with ancestor worship and reverence, these practices and beliefs are parallel.
    I really appreciate your efforts and hard work to present these topics without any obvious bias and a careful attention of how Christian influences twisted and use these beliefs and practices into a propaganda for their faith!

A question came to my mind, I am a woman, and I am not planning on having Children...so...what about my Hamingja , what happens in this case? Is there a concept for that? Or maybe anybody who reads this has an Answer for me? It would be highly appreciated! Thank you again!

      Hello there! Thank you so much for your feedback hehe ^^ well, that's a very good question and funny because just yesterday I was thinking about that too. I would like to be a father but cant make a child on my own lol, so i thought about the same. I'll have a video in september somewhat answering that question. As long as the tribe lives, the spirit of the individual lives on within the tribe. All it takes is the survival of a family member and the hamingja lives on. But I think it will be more clear on that september video, which I'm still working on. Cheers!

    I'm curious. Within this view of the soul, if one did not have children (whether by choice or dying young or biological inability), what happened to one's hamingja? Who "chooses" what hamingja get passed on to whom? You mentioned the practices of the Inuits, in which naming someone after the person transfers some of their "luck" to the younger person, but the Norse way of transferring wasn't clear, whether it could be intentional or is automatically passed on. I understand that we may not know at this late date the fine points of these beliefs but it's a question that arose so decided to ask. Thanks for these interesting videos!

    I wonder if anyone else watches your videos with a note pad and pen and makes notes?
    In the word gengja can we see the roots of the modern German verb Gehen, to go or to walk?
    Interestingly I have attended lectures/talks and various meetings to discuss reincarnation- acornerstone to my personal beliefs and the concept that I noted was that the people believe that we always reincarnate into groups, be it families, friends colleagues etc but they have no understanding or explanation why. This seems to give a reasonable explanation for that. (I will email you about that).
    Finally, because I have been very serious in these comments you may not recognise me without banter, so the Innuit have 15 names? Sounds very Iberian to me.

    • @ArithHärger
      @ArithHärger  5 років тому

      Sometimes when I'm working on something I've already written about or made a video of, I go back and take notes from my own stuff xD I tend to forget some things.
      Yes there are many parallels with German, especially when it directly comes from Old High German, which in itself has roots in Indo-European, although, as you know, my German is quite rusty, which is a shame... having family in Germany I dishonour them by struggling with German.
      I've returned the e-mail and I hope that will help. Next sunday I shall have a video on Hamingja again, but exploring the sources, it might give more insight, I hope. And yes it seems the Inuit were quite found of giving names, much like Medieval Muslims, like the most famous Arab even among vikings (Aḥmad ibn Faḍlān ibn al-ʿAbbās ibn Rāšid ibn Ḥammād), or the Portuguese who still have the tradition of maintaining important noble-family names and then a person spends an awful amount of time writing one's name xD

    • @ArithHärger
      @ArithHärger  5 років тому +1

      Yes good point. I am familiar with that. Yes, there seems to be certain similarities. Certain fantasy writers seem to be familiarialized with certain concepts resembling the Fylgja, but I do believe they get the concepts from the familiar spirits or companions of witches from Medieval Europe, which by itself was a concept with the same roots of that of the Fylgja. Like J. K. Rowling and her creation of the patronus spell in the Harry Potter series.

    I wish you had added some nuance relating to the practice of slavery in Norse culture, because it seems to tie in with the hemingja of families/people. Given that their concept was vastly different from our own, and we have ongoing privilege today (one aspect of hemingja, if I am understanding correctly) stemming from the dishonorable practices of colonial chattel slavery, it might be useful to some of your viewers.

    yes but you have fight for it, you may be good but you can be slandered , and your ancestors can be portrayed as bad and evil even though they did a lot of good , no one is with out blame . SHOUT Loudly and fall on them , never one step from your weapons ever take , you never know when you are in need of your spear

    I know I'm commenting on this video late, but what happens to your parts of self that are passed on if you have no descendants?

    I always forget to mention this. I like your music, but something about the voice alone for more than a verse seems... Strange to me? A simple drum beat or the artful use of background noise like the crow calls or crackling fire you use sometimes do a lot for the power of the song 😊

    To understand the concepts, it is also important to learn to pronounce them right. I really love your videos, but as a Danish person I can't help but notice that you mispronounce a lot of the words. Önd (ånd in danish) is pronounced like a deeper y, making an e sound with the lip form, but an o sound with the vocal cords. Å is another sound than ö, though. You also hvae a very interesting tendency to pronounce words without h's with an h and vice versa, making me curious as to where you're from.

    Don't repeat your prepositions. "the substance of which all souls are made of" = nonsense.
    You can say "the substance which all souls are made of" or "the substance of which all souls are made" but don't meld them together.
    Surely it is similar in your native language.
