Game: GB Super Mario Land 2 - 6 Golden Coins (version 1.0)
Timing from title screen (according to Japanese RTA community rules) to the fade out to the credits.
This is a glitched speedrun of Super Mario Land 2, played on a Nintendo GameCube Gameboy Player, with a GBA. In fact, this is the first speedrun ever made in the glitched category and has since been beaten by other players.
If you have any questions about the glitch or the garbage area, please watch this video:
• Super Mario Land 2 - M...
Some old notes:
- 00:46 This jump can only be made if you let go of the A-button after 36 frames at latest, otherwise you won't jump high enough. Missing the jump is often a reason to reset and retry.
- The glitch at 2:17 only happens in version 1.0 of the game. Quitting a level while going down a pipe, then entering a level will make Mario go through the floor. You will access the game's memory, translated into level data (so that one memory address corresponds to one block).
- 2:30 This pipe that sends you into the garbage area stops working if you take too long.
- 2:40 If you stand too close to the right ledge of this pipe, it won't send you all the way down.
- 2:47 This pipe only works if you move to the left (by being ejected) and go "down" at the correct pixel. Needless to say, this is very tough. You can easily overshoot the crouch-slide which gets you stuck. The way Mario accelerates is bound to a framerule, so you can't even predict when to do the "down" input.
- After breaking block A2D5, you need to quit the level and re-enter.

The best thing here is the chilling music that keeps going like nothing happened.
Its scary
@@matthiaswalter8247 if you're 8 years old, yeah
2:15 Mario enters the matrix
3:01 Mario deciphers the matrix code and explores that he is living in a simulation
3:56 Mario finds a way to escape the virtual reality
4:13 Mario then decides to stay in the simulation after all, but erases Wario from the game code
Logical explanation of what happened
Who would have thought that Super Mario Land 2 is actually a gnostic myth
Approved
04:35 Mario shows us a world without rules and controls, without borders or boundaries. A world where anything is possible. Wake Up by Rage Against the Machine plays as Mario flies towards the screen.
DDLC momento
well, that wasn't very nostalgic
Lol
XD
Yep. You need more time for it to be nostalgic. How ironic.
Watch it without the colors.
Uh yes I believe this was in the strategy guide
I saved up $100 just to buy that guide, only for it to be on page 666 of all things!!
you saved and wasted $100 for something you can prob look up online?
Hey dumb fuck, he never said when he bought it, just that he saved up for one, so he could've bought it 1 year ago and that is what I assumed, so use some common sense, because you know what they say when you assume... or maybe you don't because you're a dumb fuck =]
+lol_itsgonenow Oh like the assumption you made this person buying a guide recently? Dont act smart, it doesnt suite morons like you.
Edward Hernandez That was just rude.
So essentially, Mario is jumping around in the game's memory? That seems pretty awesome if you ask me, a physical representation of the ROM and RAM...
I'd be freaking out if a plumber was jumping around in my brain.
A person are you sure this is a sink ma'm???
Yeah the "end condition" is when a certain memory value is entered into a memory register. This is usually triggered only by completing the game. But there are way to "hack" the gMe to fake putting that value I to the memory, essentially what you saw.
Fun fact: The crap at the bottom of the level was actually the rest of the memory. The level part is basically data that is run by the game to output the level. Well, since the rest of the game has to be loaded with the level, when you get down to the bottom the game thinks that the memory values are supposed to be a level, so it displays it as a level. Since when Mario breaks a block it turns into the value 0 (indicating that there's nothing there), you can erase the value of a part of memory by breaking said block. Very interesting stuff!
2fewChars yeah i thought certain parts looked familiar
2fewChars I know, it's awesome. Imagine you can just smash the map or the item data!
What in the name of hell, that is absolutely insane.
Correction: tile no. 0 is the brick block; breaking the block changes it to 96.
the value is actually set to 60
I love when speedruns totally break a game and screw around with the memory, always fun to watch.
I think after wario saw this and saw what mario could do he left the castle... :3 maybe that's why he left to create his own franchise...
How do you even find this kind of stuff??
grimgroove i think looking at the game code and reverse engineering it.

A+start
There is an unused address space A2D5 which when set to a value different to 0 will trigger the ending credits when entering a stage. It works becuase A2D5 is originally 0, the value for breakable blocks allowing Mario to interact with it, and when he does, by breaking this block he changes the spot (A2D5) in ram with the value hex 60 (air). By the way, the jarbled mess of tiles is the ram itself which constantly changes, but the game isn't refreshing tiles for these changes. That's why some tiles have strange properties.
"There are no bugs. Only features."
Wow this is the shortest Mario game ever. And the graphics in the final level were pretty bad too.
+stripedhyenuh He glitched it, though. So he didn't actually play much at all of it.
he used glitches to get in the end that fast, the game normaly is much much longer than 3 minutes. and the graphics in that part are glitched, considering you're not supposed to get under the level.
Are you new to speedruns?
+ToonEugen6812 come guys, it's a joke
stripedhyenuh Super Mario Land is shorter.
So Mario broke the world.
Neat.
He broke his own land...
But the amazing part is that it's not a TAS.
It's not everyday you see a human destroy a game.
Mario got the good kind of mushroom this time, it seems.
One of the strangest runs I've seen...nice work
I remember playing this on the original GB back in the day and glitching into the underworld but not knowing how, why or what I could do having done it.
Mario Land 2 - Adventure of RAM-Traveling Glitchyness,
well done.
Sheesh, these people here don't get that glitches *CAN* be used in a speedrun as long as it aids the player to their advantage. I mean, seriously, a speedrun is where you try to beat the game as fast as you can by doing tricks and taking shortcuts to the end of the game and it doesn't always have to be a full playthrough. There's a reason to why their called Any% run, or Glitch run.
Cairil Yakup And many games that has glitches like this have other categories...
People think speedrunning is some kind of competition like sport..
But its a hobby, you speedrun because its fun.
So people should stop complaining about what other peoples hobbies are -_-' like rly..
Yeah, it's really annoying.
Cairil Yakup *grumbles stupidd nonrunners or nonrunnerfans don't know what anything is about speedruns...
+Cairil Yakup Of course they can. However, that does not make it a respectable speedrun.
Anakunus Get shat on you asswipe.
You have never learned a speedrun before with or without glitches.
So stfu huh ^^
Just what the fuck, some matrix shit right there.
The drugs kick in at 2:17, in case you were wondering xD
I remember doing this all the time when I was 7... I would enter a level, quickly exit and re-enter and end up in that glitched area. It didn't work with all of the levels and the results were always random.
Its funny how people who don't even speedrun get butthurt about runs that use glitches not being "legit." They are not even in the community or do runs themselves and yet they find a need to call out people who obviously love the game way more than they do and have played it hundreds of more times than they have.
they're too dumb to understand what "any %" actually means...
Dude, I did this game any%, Glitchless and Warpless in 44:12;46!!!!
The problem I have with speedrunners / twitch / etc is this. Trying to basically beg for money in any way they can. Using the word "donations" for one thing to try and hide it a bit. Or using the charity excuse so they can get more exposure for themselves and more money for themselves. Oh you want to "unlock" a emote? That will be $20. Or $10 or $5. Emotes shouldn't EVER EVER cost anyone a penny. Streamers/runners acting like they care about people keeping up a fake nice person persona to get those donations and such. And the classic here let me reset 98324924234 times and bitch at the game and or controller because they screwed up. Oh no I lost 0.1 seconds on my splits!!!! Maybe if some runners would learn to control themselves more they would get more of there precious PB's and such.
Also I've had my nes for nearly 30 years and been around twitch for more than 5 years. Used to run Mega Man 3 myself. I found that speedrunning just isn't for me even though I enjoy the games they do play.
And I'll say this too. Yes this run is legit I will say that. And the runner probably could get a good time without glitches to be fair.
Wario's like "FFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU"
Wario just gave up the castle, and Mario hanged-out in the graveyard for a while.
THE END.
This game took me hours to beat! Good job.
After looking through the comment section, all i can say to those "glitches don't count" guys is.. deal with it.
finally someone who underdtands what speedrun means
umbaupause yea
The origin of "I am 4 parallel universes ahead of you."
Holy crap this was... awesome. first time seeing the any% ^^ this was amazing.
I don't remember that level
Nice run! I might pick up this game, looks fun to break c;
Mario is so badass he doesn't even need to kick Wario's ass to take over the castle
he *[REDACTED]* wario so damn hard he just got teleported to another dimension
He Thanos snapped the world
Run was beaten by Oh_Deer

Didn't work on game boy color model why or is it 1.0 version or 1.1 pls ensear
That was incredible! Whoa!
thanks
someone did it 50 sec faster than me: www.speedrun.com/sml2#Any
I played this game as a kid, great game but I never knew there was this glitch.
i found that glitch at my first playthrough as a kid.
Oh my gosh I have been trying to find this game for so long. It was one of my favorites for sure.
Nice glitch ya found there!, and Scootaloo ftw :D
best 4 minutes of my life. Nintendo has the best programmers.
Mario: * Beats a level. *
Mario: * Enters matrix. *
Mario: WOOOOOOOOOOOOA
Mario: DUUUUUUUUUUUUDE
Wario: .......
Wario: * quietly lowers flag *
Wario: * quietly raises Mario flag *
Wario: I'm outta here
TO EVERYONE THAT'S SAYING THAT'S NOT A SPEEDRUN BECAUSE OF THE GLITCHES:
of course this is a speedrun, it consists in getting in the end of the game the fastest way possible, no matter if there's glitches or if you fight the bosses, if who's playing dont use glitches, it's valid as a speedrun. there's non-glitch runs, but this is not one of them.
wth!!! this is too much for me to take. You're awesome
*Wario watches Mario break into the literal data of the game and starts messing with it*
Wario: Welp...I can't beat that. I surrender, Mario.
Mario: *breaks into the memory, and pulls off funky moves*
Wario: _fuck._
That was really cool. What was funny was how the music kept playing.
GG
Like it? That's precisely what it is: reading the RAM as graphics data.
That garbage is an overflow of the entire game's memory. These are pretty common in older games due to the limitations of how much memory can be used for level design and the coordinates of objects. The block he breaks is what does it. In memory, it corresponds to the code flag for "has the game been beaten yet?" and breaking it sets it from the default of 0 to the normally erroneous state of "broken block", which has an address value of 60. It doesn't matter though, because if that flag is ANY value but 0 it will go to the end credits of the game the next time Mario enters a level transition.
Thanks for explaining for others, but I need to correct some things.
This is not an overflow glitch at all. SML2 level data is between memory addresses 0xB000 and 0xDFFF and each byte represents one block. The glitch merely allows Mario to travel outside of this area. So bytes that weren't meant for level data are being translated into blocks. The address for the block I'm breaking actually doesn't change at all during normal gameplay, so I don't know what its purpose is.
One of the most interesting Speedruns. Mario breaking the 4th wall deep down below and access the Debug version of the Ending accompanied by the Pumpkin Zone music that never stops playing. It's probably because the Debug version doesn't have music triggers, but I'd like to think that was the result of the other broken blocks that Mario went through.
"Boohoo it has glitches so it's not a speedrun"
Do you even know what "Any%" means? It means the speedrunner can do anything to beat the game as fast as possible, exploiting glitches and stuff. He doesn't have to get all the collectibles or play all the stages.
He just has to go fast.
If you want a speedrun without glitches or exploits, go watch a glitchless speedrun or a 100% run.
The music of this game is kinda spooky, but sticky at the same time. Can't stop listening to it.
i dont know what you did but great job ;D
xXxChaosKidxXx dont cry plz
played on gameboy player for gamecube
I actually remember finding that glitch but never knew you could ride it that far down lmao.
This is cool. :)
And Mario vowed never to mix shrooms and other drugs ever again.
TF did I just watch? XD Nice job though and the creepy music fit perfectly. ;)
I never got a chance to play this gem back in the day
grats mugg
How the hell do people come up with this?
qwasd0r Reverse engineering and TASing.
my childhood just flashed before my eyes
This was like an acid trip starting good and ending bad.
I love the music in this game, I had this and wario on gbc growing up and loved them both
Love the sound sync @ 4:25! :D
u just gotta love the first level music
Super Mario Land 2 - "Athletic"
still one of my favorite marios to full clear
Insane!
Fascinating.
Why were Mario Game Boy games so weird? These games had characters that you'd never see in other Mario games.
They were made by a different development team than the mainline console games.
WR clearly stands for "World Ruining."
xD
Axciom LOL WTF
"note:I am so late to the party ;-;"
Amazing
that has to be.. the most.. USEFUL GLITCH EVER (and also the best by far :T)
I loved this game when I was a kid ^^
Man, this is like in those dumb hacker movies where you break into the system so well you're literally "inside" the code, except it's actually a thing. it even has layers, doesn't it?
My god I love this game
Im trying it but the game crashes most of the time or i finish the level.
I cant go so deep :(
I need fire for pumpkin zone 1
I could get mushroom from the first mushroom block in level 1, and then spinjump first block at pumpkin zone 1 which would save some minimal time
can also save time by not failing at the end after climbing the steps in pumpkin zone 1, and not failing some parts in the garbage area but it's, as said, a very lucky run. Can't get much better unless I put more hours into this which I'm not willing to do
Wow.
Ah yes. Exactly how my friends and I would beat the game as kids.
And that is how Wario returned Mario's castle.
Random Commenter ??????????????
Thats insane
mario:*beats game*
Game:*Still plays music from pumpkin zone*
Me:spoopy
How did U do that?
lol I fell down there once, but I didn't know you could go anywhere
maybe not the nright ending music, but its your castle agein, so, well done!
Super Mario Matrix
Many were lost in that exploit
Alternate title: Visiting the backrooms of Super Mario Land 2
that pumpkin music through the end...
2:18 bro just went mining in super mario land 2 💀
When your friend comes to your house and you forget to clean your room 2:20
I'm trying to understand if this makes any sense...
It's not a glitch, it's a _feature_.
What the hell did I just watch? Looks like Mario meets Interstellar. 🤔
i.... i spent so much of my childhood on this game....
bobthebuilder3xy cool. Its a pity I didnt even have a Game Boy :(
SQUEAK SQUEAK SQUEAK SQUEAK SQUEAK SQUEAK
DOO DOO DO- DOO
Should be called Super Matrix Land: A speedrun through memory.
mario has took the red pill
2:44 jumps synced with music
I tried this once. My Gameboy caught on fire.
epic
Didn't work on game boy color model why pls ensear
I have NO IDEA what just happened
I am late.
When you exit a level during a pipe transition (by dying or start+select on a beaten level), when you enter the next level the game misplaces you and you clip through the floor. On the cartridge, the map of the curret level is fully stored in RAM, youcouldeeen physically draw the level on a portion of the ram, so Mario (X,Y) coordinates map to a specific place in the RAM.
But when Mario falls, his Y coordinates is so low that it "exits" the portion where the map is stored, so the garbage tiles you see are actually values in RAM. After that, he navigates through the RAM to reach and activate a debug option triggering the end credits.
I think the music goes better with the glitched area :P
WR stands for what, now? (It might be more simple than I realise, but I cannot figure it out; I have not been watching gameplay videos for too long)
Loki Wolfe World record. This is the fastest playthrough by a human on a real console from file select to reaching the staff credits without cheats.
That just kicks all kinds of ass! I was cracking up while watching the unconventional method of beating the game, but if it works, it works! Oh and thank you, as well.
+mugg1991 I thought this was a tas.
i think world record lol
