T-Junctions for Beginners | Learn to drive: Basic skills

  • If you have just started driving, then one of the first tasks is to learn how to turn left and right at T-junctions. This can be harder to master than it looks, as a driver must complete a series of tasks as they approach the junction. If the driver forgets to do something, or attempts to rush the process it could put them in danger. This video will show how to approach and use a T-junction safely.

    I've been driving on my own for a few months and just today I almost made a blunder where I didn't make effective enough observations at a T junction, only noticing the car approaching to my right and not looking left properly enough. I think I had looked left but it was an old observation and my view was not particularly far. Luckily I looked left at the last second after I had pulled out from the junction as I was about to pull into the left hand lane and was able to get on the brake before cutting across the mini that I didn't see coming from my left. I usually do good observations but I feel quite annoyed at myself for that mistake (like I do with any driving mistake). But I'm just glad that at least I didn't cause an accident. I'll take it as a lesson to always be extra cautious.

    As always, thanks for the brilliant videos. Is there a "technique" please for very "tight" left turns. I often go wide or run over the kerb. Is the trick to steer a bit late in order to clear the kerb? I'm learning in an automatic car but it's something I can't get to grips with. Any feedback would be wonderful, thanks.

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  4 роки тому +2

      Knowing when to steer left to follow the kerb around the corner can be tricky at first - so try going a little slower whilst you perfect your technique. If you watch the video at around 5:44 you can see that we stay in our normal road position until we reach the point where the kerb bends, then we steer left to follow the kerb. We try to keep the car about a metre from the kerb, so that our rear wheel doesn't get too close. I'm sure you will be fine after a little more practice 👍🏼

I don't see many videos where this is performed. Also, when setting of should I have the clutch up all the way before adding more gass?

    do we need to check blind spots when emerging to a major road or when moving to a minor road from a major one

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  6 років тому +1

      Once we are in the flow of traffic we normally just use our mirrors, with the occasional shoulder check when changing lanes. However, if you think the situation needs a blind-spot check to stay safe, then why not?

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool

      All traffic on the major road has priority over all traffic on the minor road. So the person waiting at the Give Way line must be patient and wait until the traffic on the major road has gone.

    Great Video! I Really helpful. Shall i ask you a question? When turning right from major road to a minor road at a fairly busy T junction (without traffic light how to position our car? Should we come close to the centre line or shall we wait close to the left side for the traffic to clear? If we come close to the centre line and wait it may block the traffic behind as most of our roads are congested at junctions. If we wait close to the left then we may not be able to turn as traffic from behind keeps on passing. Could you please explain what is the best way?

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  6 років тому +1

      +pn genmail We recommend positioning to the right of your lane, beside the centre of the road. This road position will make it clear that we are turning right (useful if our indicators are obscured) and allow following traffic to pass to our left if the road is wide enough. Don’t worry if sometimes we hold traffic behind us up while we wait.

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool

      We should always use the foot brake to stop, and the handbrake once stopped. Pulling the handbrake on whilst moving is dangerous, as it can cause the car to lose control.
