There’s a significant difference between products made in China by genuine Chinese companies and those manufactured in China by Western companies that outsource production to China. The concept of “cheap” originates from the latter because the primary objective of producing goods in China for Western companies is to reduce costs. i think this anti-asian/anti-chinese trope needs to end and the idea that they only make "crap" is offensive and condescending. this type of western propaganda was also levelled at japan and south korea when they were in their early vehicle-making phases. the irony is that japanese vehicles now outlast them all and are the most reliable and affordable to maintain. But japan is known for being a perfectionist country with excellent workmanship generally. The south korean motor industry has also evolved as well. And i think that's the point. Countries do not remain stationery. They evolve. They invest in R&D, they make mistakes, they learn from them, they develop expertise, they get better, etc. China is actually leaps and bounds ahead in the solar and EV spaces compared to any country in the world, including the US. They are actually developing the new technology and patents now. The chinese EV brands have been established in china for a while now, even though they're only relatively recently emerged on the global scene, minus europe and US with their 100% tariffs on chinese EV's. the asian motor entrants have made owning a car and now EV's more accessible to the ordinary person and also kept the euro and US car manufacturers more honest with their pricing. Otherwise, it would be a euro and US duopoly charging through the roof. australia doesn't even have a motor industry so clearly car manufacturing ain't an easy venture/pursuit, so at least be successful in the game yourself before you talk smack about other countries' motor industries.

As a Chinese person who has participated in overseas OEM business, I believe most people have a misunderstanding. The low-quality Chinese products you could only buy before were not because we could only produce such junk, but because your companies asked us to produce these things. For example, for an electric toy, we can offer solutions ranging from $10 to $200, divided into six levels. Your company chose the $10 solution, and when it was shipped to your country, its price was set at $80. So now, when we bring a genuine $80 product here, everything seems unbelievable
I canceled my Ranger Platinum order a few months ago (12 months with no order number). I ordered the Shark last week. For me it makes sense, don't need to tow or carry heavy loads and a lot of my driving will be on EV mode with the occasional longer trip. The shark seems to be more comfortable, quieter & roomier inside for the family plus I prefer rear coils to leaf springs, the V2L, cooled seats, flat rear floor etc.
Yep. It's an SUV with a tray. The interior, especially the rear seat, is a very comfortable place to be. I'll take rear coils and a lower towing capacity to get nicer ride comfort. I've ordered one.
Gents, another great unbiased video. I love the fact that you guys are getting the chance to have a run in these new vehicles and giving us some insights. Unfortunately this is the way they are going, and I agree that longevity of software updates etc like the iPhone will be an issue and reliability after mud and water crossings will also be interesting. The BYD Shark is not an extended-range electric vehicle;it is a plug-in hybrid electric vehiclePHEV.The vehicle is powered by a combination of a 1.5L Turbo engine and dual electric motors, which means the internal combustion engine does participate in driving the vehicle. The system outputs a total power of 321kW and a torque of 650Nm,capable of propelling the Shark from 0-100km/h in just 5.7 seconds. The Shark features BYD’s 29.58kWh Blade Battery, which provides 100km of pure electric range and a combined total driving range of up to 800km.The vehicle can operate primarily on electric power, but the gasoline engine is engaged for a significant portion of the drive, especially in off-road conditions or when higher speeds are required. Therefore, the oil engine does indeed participate in driving the BYD Shark.
The petrol engine does not 'drive' the vehicle in off road conditions. It doesn't have a traditional gear box. It has a reduction gear that permits the petrol engine to directly drive the front axle only when cruising at highway speed. It's more efficient to directly drive the front wheels at highway cruise speed than it is to charge the batteries and use the electric motors. The rear wheels can only be driven by an electric motor - there is no drive shaft from the petrol engine to the rear axle. If you take it off road for long enough that the battery gets depleted (20% or a higher amount that you optionally set) then the petrol engine will kick in to provide charge to the battery. But in 4wd conditions you will keep running on the front and rear electric motors.

@@peterachilles9346 I don't think you understand how this car works. Its for some and not for all... And that's ok! The competition is good for our current vehicles, and certainly evaluates our options for the future. We didnt always have combustion engines you know 😂
BYD's PHEV technology advantage is that even if you never charge the car, only use gasoline to drive the vehicle can maintain low fuel consumption and strong power, because most of the long-term majority of users are using pure electric drive and it has the function of kinetic energy recovery, reducing the burden of the brake system, so that it has the advantages of long maintenance cycle, low maintenance costs, and low failure rate.

BYD has been building EV and PHEV cars for a long time and have a good reputation for reliability, so they know how to build a vehicle, the battery packs are sealed from moisture like all EV'S, Toyota has signed a deal with BYD to supply their DM-i Hybrid technology to them, so if it's good enough for Toyota to take it, BYD must be doing something right, would I buy one, No not because it's Chinese or PHEV, purely because it's the first, I never buy the first of something, give it a year to iron the bugs out, same for Ranger PHEV, it will be interesting as it has a very small battery with bigger engine but keep the payload / towing capacity, would I buy it, also No for the same reason, even though it's been in development for many years.

Using a motor as a generator is a great idea. I have thought that for a long time but no American company seems to want to try it. However, I really don't know how the batteries will hold up when submerged from a river crossing to a flood from a hurricane. I have seen too many photos or videos of EVs burning up when in contact with water, especially salt water. I really like my house. I would hate to lose it like one family did in the recent hurricane when it caught fire in the garage with less than a foot of water in there.
The kind of battery they're using is a lithium phosphate one, the difference between that and a lithium ion one is that it's not quite as energy dense, however they do not catch fire, even when exposed to flames or if it got punctured by something.
Nothing new in that regards. In fact in the past it's been even more intelligently done where the petrol engine is inline with the motor (which can be reconfigured as an alternator) and drive system. Throw in some clutches and the car can be driven direct by the petrol engine, while spinning the generator and charging the battery, or combine the petrol and electric motor for lots of torque or disengage the petrol engine and run purely electric.
A friend has a Mitsubishi Outlander PEHV, only at speeds over 70 kph is the engine directly driving the front axle via an overdrive gear ratio. Otherwise it's in EV mode with the engine acting as a charger. The whole package is quite capable off-road.

Although i disagree on some of your comments on EV's, it was a very well done review and not too biased. BYD are watching and listening to Aussie mainstream thoughts on EVs, and what this vehicle can do for the Aussie public is convince people EVs are just better, even when they are hesitant jump to full EV because of all the FUD they hear about the tech "not being ready"... It is ready but BYD knows the aussie public arent convinced yet so this is being sold as a stopgap or a "gateway drug". As someone who lives in a major city and just has the one car for it all, the idea of being able to drive to the shops or Bunnings without using any fuel or a cold start is pretty cool. The power train is more attractive than the gadgets inside (imagine if the screen got stuck part way through its orientation) but agree the longevity will be important. For long trips where you can't do any charging and run mainly off petrol, I wonder about the round trip efficiency of generation/storage/electric motor and if it's actually worse off? I'm sure over the life of the vehicle it wouldn't really matter. With your comment on EV chargers powered by generators, I get it's ironic but realistically over the life of the vehicle (if you consider the average ev owner might be uunlucky to do 5 of them in their whole ownership and it facilitates electric travel rest of the time) it's still a huge net gain
I assume you gents watched topgear, I found it amusing they called this things shark ... It made me think of the "Hammerhead Eagle i-Thrust" Which was the exact same principle if a generator running the electric motor
Check out John Cadogans take on BYD and under performing batteries. I like the concept of EV's and hybrids, just dont think the tech is quite there yet.
The engine can generate electricity and connect to the wheels In most cases, it's a generator If you increase the speed then he'll connect to the front wheels
@ 8:43 - the rotated screen gives 3 camera views and is best used for reverse parking, or just parking in tight spaces.. It's also good for navigation, buty not if you wear polarised glasses. i think this anti-asian/anti-chinese trope needs to end and the idea that they only make "crap" is offensive and condescending.
this type of western propaganda was also levelled at japan and south korea when they were in their early vehicle-making phases. the irony is that japanese vehicles now outlast them all and are the most reliable and affordable to maintain.

@@andrewcoulter323 what narrative? a lot of people are seeing that ICE do have health effects on people and are looking at pure EVs. but a PHEV is a good compromise for using less fossil fuels and bypassing diesel and AD BLUE and DFP because the torque that diesel people look for can be made easily by the electric motors and the battery. its a good stop gap solution.
No, not good stop gap. as battery is capable of offering everything you need both in power and torque plus towing capability
Having that button to switch on/off the petrol engine is a really great feature
The engine can automatically turn on the power generation when you overuse the external power supply. You don't actually need to press that button.

Thank you. Frustrating when the guys doing the review know less than the people watching

Komatsu mining dump trucks have been using diesel over electric drive for well over 25yrs.

This is built by a great Chinese car company
@ 8:43 - the rotated screen gives 3 camera views and is best used for reverse parking, or just parking in tight spaces..
It's also good for navigation, buty not if you wear polarised glasses.
The software for road conditions is still being tweeked, but SAND mode works best for slow speed crawling over ridges.
68% of BYD production and sales a year at the moment is hybrid, they started with hybrid from the start in 2008, only started building EV in 2019.
Loved my Outlander PHEV. Ran up 230,000km before going full electric,,,
People need to not be so quick to jump on the bandwagon of hating electric cars… of course this isn’t a RAM that’ll tow 8Ton. But it definitely has its place in the market, not everyone who buys a Hilux is taking them to Cape York and camping every weekend
have fun having a car thats worthless in 3years
Remember cars made in Japan in the 60s, cars made in Korea in the late 90s and now cars made in China
Great review, bet they dont give one to Whistling Diesel to test.
It’s effectively banned in the US anyway
Did you guys play with the different drive modes to see which one(s) are better for specific terrains? Or it's just on the normal driving mode throughout the video?
Haha , Farm Ferrari Vs the BYD (climies track) 😜 Tj
I'd pay to see that 😂👌
yes... this would be fun.
Thanks for the content team!
This thing will make Chinese vehicles mainstream
Cool review lads, this one is on the list.
If it was made here, I’d have a greater trust. The chance of spontaneous combustion due to lower regulations troubles me too.
you should have a look at the byd battery technology, they do not use lithium like other manufactures and claim they are completely safe and can not spontaneously combust. Ive test drove quite a few of there new models and as much as i hate to say it, I can see BYD giving Toyota and other top manufactures in the next 5_10 years. The new cheap price and specs just out do everything else by a long margin. If these things prove themselves to be reliable ,it will put others out of business
@@seanhutton7155 I see BYD has you brainwashed, 1:08 literally stated it's a "Huge Lithium Battery" what else they gonna use, Calcium, lead acid? 😂
(Edit) Cheap prices? Mate this thing is $69,990 + On road costs, that's $12,500 more than a Ranger XLT for example!
@@EightBucksTwentynot all lithium batteries are dangerous tho (when used with common sense) some can be like a r/c battery if its a good quality lifepo4 its safe as houses
@@Tom-lf8hx that's great and I understand that, my original comment was in regards to old mate claiming BYD don't use Lithium, not once did I mention any batteries blowing up.
(Edit) I know Lithiums can be safe when used correctly, mate every phone I've owned has one, and I've never had one explode. Only had one explode next door a neighbour left his battery Impact Gun on charge for too long and it blew up.
What are the current rates of spontaneous combustion per 100,000 EVs?
Will be great for picking up the groceries, like most modern utes.
