      Great idea for a series. How about a ruined Roman villa? There's lots of MDF kits but they're all pristine. How can they be modified to reflect the passage of a couple of hundred years ?

    It's great to see the return of the shorter videos with an actual project in them. I wasn't really enjoying the 2 hour plus videos. Just my personal preference, I'm sure others loved them, but vids in the 20-40 minutes range are much nicer for my tastes.

  • @AzraelThanatos
    @AzraelThanatos 6 років тому +2

    You know, if you copy the bases for the ring, you can do some as broken ones and the main ones for intact ones that you can swap in and out as you wish.
    I'd also suggest toothpicks when putting it together to make the joins even harder. I've had a lot of them break on me at those points and they're a pain to reassemble without it being very visible. You can also use the small nails and punch them through the base from the bottom to add even more sturdiness to it.
    Of course, I'm used to building things to take a lot of damage due to my terrain getting abused a bit more than I wish...

    Nice job! Though I feel I should point out that you've made modular "trilithons," not quite a "henge." A henge is a continuous circular formation and can be made of earthen rampart, or stone blocks or even wood pillars. What you've made here are trilithons, where one megalith is stacked onto two other upright megatliths. Stone henge has a group of trilithons in the central area surrounded by the actual henge, which is the (once upon a time) continuous ring of standing stones. I know this is a pretty minor technicality, but I thought you might find it interesting.

    • @TheTerrainTutor
      @TheTerrainTutor  6 років тому +2

      Oh I'm looking more into this, thanks buddy!

    • @garf2k4
      @garf2k4 6 років тому +2

      Almost right. Technically speaking, a henge is a raised, roughly circular or oval bank with an internal ditch encompassing a flat area around 20m in diameter. It doesn't matter about stone blocks or wooden pillars ( which in Stonehenge's case, at least, came hundreds of years, if not millennia, after the earthworks were built ). This also means that Stonehenge isn't actually a henge as the ditch is on the outside of the bank.
      The scenery looks awesome as always, but I would say the thrilithons look a touch overworked, a little regular and smooth, if you will. Also, with the other ring of stones ( which would be more in in the shape of the pointy monolith in the middle, but much smaller ) would be a slightly different colour as they were made from Welsh bluestone. Not wanting to be picky, just trying to give ideas on how this could be tweaked.
      I'm sure Spinal Tap would love to play with this on stage behind them.

    I liked the addition of the well lit close-up photo stills. You can make out a lot of the very subtle colour transitions that aren't so obvious from the video close-ups (video can have a nasty habit of 'smoothing out' detail). Really enjoyed this tutorial, I am now trying to come up for a scenario where I need hinges just so I can try it out! LOL

    Have you tried scuffing the EVPA base with a scalpel or a rasp help the PVA adhere? Another idea would be to quickly drill through the bottom of the EVPA and get either BBQ skewers or really thick paperclips and essentially pin the stones to the base. I've had reasonable success with the second approach when sticking PS pieces to MDF.

    • @TheTerrainTutor
      @TheTerrainTutor  6 років тому +1

      It would certainly help the pva key in but I've found you don't really need to as it sticks pretty well without it mate

    Very nice tutorial Mel, I think they turned out lovely.
    Just a thought on the filler:
    You said you like the harder finish of the Artex, but the gap filling of the filler. Could you experiment with literally combining them?
    You mentioned in the video that you normally water down your filler slightly, maybe you could use the Artex as the agent to "water" your filler down.

  • @57dent
    @57dent 6 років тому +1

    Mel, a production suggestion. When editing the videos keep the video sound track but remove the last few seconds of the video portion and put in your stills in so that it avoids the silent bits where you show the stills. I think the overall flow of the tutorial would be improved

    Looks so simple, but you can do a lot with a stone circle, solstice and star alignment, sacred math, the selection of different rocks (like the Bluestones at Stonehenge)... what brings me to a question: What is the best way to replicate the properties of pure, white quartz used at mounds such as Newgrange (shines up brightly in sunlight)?

    • @joshjohnston7388
      @joshjohnston7388 6 років тому

      Merkur Schröder hm. White styrene dotted with a white glue/glitter perhaps? The kid had some vials of glitter that were very white and not so multicolored. You could tweak the amount of glitter in the glue to get the albedo you want.

    • @IntergalacticApeMan
      @IntergalacticApeMan 6 років тому

      Cheers, mate! I've actually been painting reflection stripes by doing a white or ice blue undercoat with a thin layer of Vallejo's Metal Medium (essentially a Mica paint without additional color) over it. That works ok, somehow. But I've never tried it in the rock dimensions. Could be possible it's not too silvery if mixed properly. The correct type of white might do the trick.

    • @TheTerrainTutor
      @TheTerrainTutor  6 років тому

      I'd probably go with quartz and then heavy drybrush grey etc leaving the quartz showing in the recesses mate

    • @IntergalacticApeMan
      @IntergalacticApeMan 6 років тому +1

      Sticking with the original just weathering it up is probably the easy way out. But if we're talking Newgrange dimensions, weight might be an issue.
