Q himself needs to see this. This the reason he made album like that. He would be super pleased knowing someone spend so much energy and time to digest Blue Lips greatness
Thank you for the shout out Prof Skye, glad you were able to find some insight from my comment. Maybe I’ll actually start that channel haha, you would be a great colleague to have. #AVAA prof
AVAA, I don't know if I share your degree of enthusiasm for this album as an instant masterpiece, but I'm very interested to see how it ages. I agree that this is rap album of the year so far by a pretty significant margin, though. As always, thanks for giving us a deep dive into this project and for sharing your enthusiasm for amazing music like this!
Foux is the 4th duet by Q and Soulo. Listen to the prior ones for layered appreciation. Faux like “Four”. This feels like the last real rap album for some reason. Love your work also
Right around my third listen it all came together for me.. I enjoyed it the first few spins but it’s consumed my weekend now to the point where I’m hyped to go for a drive just to spin it again. this album is un fucking believable. I wait to rank his albums until they are out for like a year or more however I can already tell this is gonna be in rotation for years
This album was ist he biggest surprise in a minute. He kept the oldschool Schoolboy sounds and instrumentals but merged them with such innovativ and new ideas. I really liked Oxymoron but had a problem with Blank face and Crashtalk, I felt that the overall sound is a bit out of date. Here he found the perfect balance. Its jazzy, trappy, groovy, hard hiting, introspective, it really is a masterpiece of an album. Love it.
That's interesting, I definitely find Blank Face to be his most innovative and out there album (although the new one kinda challenges it), Oxymoron feels far more dated to me
Detective Crashmore reference? You are a gem sir. Also, regarding Foux/Ab-Soul... I believe the song as meant as a continuation of their "Druggys with Hoes" song series (foux as in four). Whenever you do get around to Ab-Soul, "Book of Soul" is one of the most heartfelt rap songs I've heard and a good way to get introduced to him and a lot of the underlying emotional weight of his music that gets overshadowed by the fact that he is just a great fucking rapper. AVAA Prof!
AVAA Loved this review a lot, thanks for taking the time to just sit, think and speak; so simple! Also hearing a Schrödinger’s cat reference only a week after watching the movie Coherence for the first time kind of blew my mind 😂
You’ve got great content bro. Been tuned in since the Kendrick stuff and had to double back to this after hearing you mention it multiple times. I think a part of what made this album so great is he looked at it as a redemption after crash talk, where he tried to be more commercial. Other than that every single one of his projects are solid. A true rappers rapper and probably the most unique gangsta rapper of all time 💯
AVAA. I finally got around to listening to this one and I'm kicking myself that I didn't get to it sooner. Also the game you're thinking about is Timesplitters. Time Killers is an arcade fighting game.
AVAA. Glad you enjoyed this I’ve always thought schoolboy was underrated. Also, I hope you listen/ do a review on the new Yard Act album. I think it’d be right up your alley
Great review as always. As far as your 23:00 question. You got to check out Royce Da 5’9. Book of Ryan and The Allergory are amazing albums. Since your policy is to only review current albums, maybe you can review his LA Leakers episode 100 freestyle. It’s legendary, amongst the best freestyle of all time. Here’s snippet and the answer to your question . Cops crooked wearing SWAT stickers/swaztikas attending nazi meeting. Here’s another bar from the freestyle, just because it goes so hard. The Cain (cocaine/ stick-cane) made me able (Abel) to drop the deacon and go off the deep end. Y’all so weak (week) I forgot the Weekend (The Weekends name is Abel)
Time Crisis was the game you were thinking of I think. Had arcade games with light guns. And I thought the part about you being grandfathered in before simps was hilarious. Also I understand that submersing yourself in "young people" culture and music will naturally rub off on you, but I hope you don't feel compelled to use new slang to appear cool. The value of your reviews is the novel perspective only you are providing. Be it with your different musical upbringing, your academic background which gives you a rich vocabulary to describe the music, your knowledge on the prehistory of Rap, basically you're entertaining and distinctively educational on a platform where most other people in this area will have the same things to say. But yeah loved the review, thanks for doing this.
your reference comparing Q to Mike Milligan and Fargo is my favorite of all time. because i love both. And the actors u was referring to name is Bokeem Woodbine!
The tv show reference is exactly what I am experiencing lol I am just now getting into the thick of it with Game of Thrones. I do this with music sometimes but I keep an ear out for interesting artists and albums that look appealing
The more i listen to this album the deeper i enjoy it, its insanely fun, it makes me cry and turn up back to back but its not disjointed. If you wanna understand more watch the interview with Nadeska. The album cover alone is genius
Skye, I am *SO GLAD* that you've finally discovered ScHoolboy Q! One of my favorite artists ever, and definitely my favorite West Coast artist since the glory days of Death Row 😁 Annoyed that the algo went over a week before letting me know you reviewed this amazing album; that's what I get for not checking in lol There isn't another HipHop artist like Q. Yes, you MUST listen to my favorite HipHop album of the 2010s, the _Blank Face LP..._ followed by _Oxymoron, Habits & Contradictions_ and the rest! "Love Birds" really grew on me, too, til I loved it as much as the rest 😁 All of Q's catalogue is incredibly dope - _CrasH Talk_ is not as consistent as the rest but even that grew on me heavily.
P.P.S. So glad you mentioned H Rap Brown, The Last Poets, Watts Prophets and, then, DJ Muggs... all huge influences since early childhood. I recommend all those to _everybody!_
First Mr. Robot was a crazy show definitely worth the watch. But I love this album not sure on how it compares to Blankface yet but it's way better than Crash Talk. No skips crazy beat switches this was great

Just listened to again second time ALL THE WAY THRU. That's big for me as I usually never finish albums (especially rap ones) start to finish as it's hard for me to stay intrigued with it. in fact, I stopped listening to we don't trust you right before like that🤣. Really enjoyed the album
I flew across states to see him all by myself in a club, I can’t tell you how out of character that was for me. One of the best decisions of my life. ScHoolboy Q is good at everything and he’s actual swag personified effortlessly.
To get into Nipsey check out Victory lap. The last verse of that Kanye sing was YG. He collaborated with Nipsey. I think you like. Last album he made in life.
I really tried liking this album, I gave it another shot. Just feels like there was no direction and replay value. Nonetheless I hope there is a Black Hippy album one day
AVAA. Prof, Check out the artist Rex Laurent for a thunder ground Thursday. She’s a white female rapper from LA with only 2,000 listeners on Spotify. To me the sound is if Post Malone had a child with 070 shake and Lauren Auder, but with like a suburban white girl surrogate. Really interesting stuff. Think you would dig it.
