Zeltron is routinely denied his flowers by the community, a shame bc I love his ability to easily slide into different modes and personas with his work
I went back and started watching your Melt my eyez review after this because I never saw it. Got the impression you havent listened to some of Denzels older stuff. I know youve probably got a ton of stuff to get through but id love to hear a review of Taboo. That was in many peoples eyes his first big concept album and its how I personally got in to his music. Has some pretty dark subject matter but also very interesting stuff in there. As a little hook to provide some motivation to listen theres a certain 'plot twist' in regards to the opening title track Taboo that really blew my mind. A character in the song is really meant to represent himself. Not immediately obvious at all on a first listen. Cheers for the great videos anyway.
Hi Professor Skye i loved this video and everything you had to say on this album. I'm only 19 and every video of yours reveals a new lens to view art through that excites me about the world around me. Your casual cool nature to all music no matter the sound/genre/content and way of extrapolating beauty in ways lots of academics can't for art that is considered "lesser" is so inspiring. With Denzel Curry here especially my first listen was largely comparative to Melt My Eyez, and the jump being made to the "low" and "stupid" as you describe. Denzel embelishes all this beauty into his mixtape that will be simply misunderstood by so many. The callback to the 2016 Cypher is also especially important here as Denzel stood next to "mumble rappers" who's art was similarly written off by older rap fans. To finish my comment, the 2016 cypher is now held in the highest regard by young rap fans, the same way rock rebelled against adults in the 80s with a "fuck the system" message, hip hop does now in a totally new fashion, the middle finger being intense auto tune, lifestyles that stand in the face of tradition and a general fun/lack of care with music that bothers oldies to no end.
Boosting this cause seriously Denzel is so fucking underrated. I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect after melt my eyez but this is so sick, such a cool guy too
Maaaaan! This is the first video of yours that I’ve seen and I’m subscribed now!!! I feel like you really get this album and I really love to see the appreciation. I really don’t want this album to go under looked. AVAA
AVAA this album is definitely meant to be blasted in the car, or unless you got some crazy subwoofer setup at home. It just doesn't feel right without that crazy bass!
AVAA Justin Hunte recommended your channel a while back, so I thought I would give it a shot. I started by watching the videos on the Kendrick-Drake beef and have watched my way up through this video. The rate at which you pump these out is kind of impressive especially given the apparent thought you put behind creating comparisons to other subjects you know, study, love, etc. The academic approach you take to Hip Hop analysis is surprisingly, refreshingly insightful. Surprising in that for a person of the Caucasian persuasion to pick up on a lyric like the "Ku Klux" one to describe something white and clearly appreciate it as much as you do without feeling some sort of way is kind of rare especially one coming from Massachusetts. Refreshing in that your understanding of the music in relation to the culture is apparent. On more than one occasion you've admitted to being an outside observer with the understanding that you can enjoy the music even if you are not a part of the culture, respect. Also wanted to quickly throw in that I caught your comment about Fantano's yellow flannel. So clearly you're studying other online reviewers to improve upon your content in one way or another. So I decided to comment on this particular video because I believe Zel is criminally underrated. One of the things that is impressive about him is that he's stated that he never wants to make a similar sounding album to one that he's already done in the past. As far as I can tell he has lived up to that goal. I started listening when he came out with Taboo and then quickly checked out Imperial. I then tried to find everything I could by him before on Soundcloud and other platforms. So this album to me is par for the course in that it is fantastic in its own unique way. Please excuse my terrible attempt at an analogy, but it's like Picasso going into his Rose Period. I'd go into this further, but I feel like there are other thoughts I want to get out before ending this long-winded comment. Additionally it seems like this album is following a resurging trend, regional Hip Hop. I think this is fantastic because the competition to rep a region creates great music. Then it's all about which is the best region. I don't know which is, but I am biased toward the West Coast though. Speaking of which, I don't know that To Pimp A Butterfly (TPAB) necessarily needs DAMN to be as great as it is. DAMN was definitely a nice progression, but quite frankly going from Overly Dedicated to Section.80 to good kid, m.A.A.d city to TPAB is/was enough. It stands on its own, and if Kendrick never made another album then it would still be one of the best Hip Hop albums ever. To me what DAMN did was make people realize he could put out "bangers". I put the quotes there because I honestly don't know how King Kunta isn't one. Basically it made him more accessible to the Pop music fan in my mind, further solidifying him as one of the greatest to ever grace the mic. Both of your tangents, Spanish speakers not being a monolith and the ignorance US citizens are kept in by not being required to learn another language, were great. It would be great if more people thought like you on that subject matter. On a personal note, it'd seem to many in the US anything south of Texas is Mexico like you've stated. I can't tell you how many times when I've said I was half Guatemalan then ended up becoming Mexican in someone's eyes. I suppose they can claim they can't see borders which I guess is literally true unless looking at a map. Alright, I think I've said enough now. Tangent of my own though, I'm kind of jealous of your audio set up there. The Pro-Ject record player and McIntosh receiver, vinyl must sound great on whatever speakers you have to complement that set up. Anyways, great content. Keep up the good work and hope you do review That Mexican OT at some point. He's dope.
Playthatboizay is almost like Denzels prodigy. Was featured on ZUU plus a few singles Zel has had. Also opened for Zels 2022 show in Brixton London and was sensational, brought a great energy. Loved the video, glad someone else loves this album as much as I do.

It's not like melt my eyez that connects people through current world situations, but for what the album is supposed to be, it's perfect in my opinion.
AVAA denzel typically follows this album then elevated mixtape pattern. Not sure when you started following Denzel but if you haven’t checked out zuu it’s a tribute to Florida rap and came after his major label debut
AVAA - i think another good point to show is in your comparison with Kendricks release cycle of deep concept album -> fun mixtape is something that Denzel has done in the past before almost exactly as hes doing now. Ta13oo was an extremely introspective, mostly solo album that delved into his insecurities and the process of admitting so he can grow; which was then followed directly by ZUU which was a collection of fun songs to pay homage to his home in Florida featuring some southern artists including PlayThatBoiZay. sounds extremely familiar right? on release of KOTMSv2 i immediately thought it was like a more evolved version of ZUU where hes just having some fun with his heritage and producing that more mixtape sound that he originally came from. with that being said i wonder if hes also going to do more to continue the cycle by releasing another short EP much like Unlocked (the collaboration EP with Kenny Beats)
I think that when you talk about removing this divide between low and high brow as an attempt at deterritoralizing. Opening up new creative lines of flights. Idk I've just been reading deleuze recently so a point like this has been resting on my mind

This was a low stakes, no concept Zel record akin to ZUU or Unlocked or 13LOOD IN 13LOOD OUT or 32 Zel/Planet Shrooms, rather than a high stakes record in the vein of Melt My Eyez - that's what Designed By Angels is gonna be. It's also gonna be an R&B album according to Zel and I can't wait
Avaa, Maxo Kream should be on your radar, he does something similar with his albums where they’re very accessible with not overly thoughtful lyrics, then right after he will say some deeply personal very smart things that make you think. You would enjoy his music. Also something to be said about misogyny in the south, they tend to include more female rappers than almost any other area of hip hop so I think they are actually almost feminist in some ways not being afraid to feature lots and lots of amazing female voices.
AAVA!!You seem to like to cover new drops. But ik you also like to see touch into what the black youth is listening to. If that’s true, Rod wave is a rapper/singer I think you would be very interested in reviewing. “African Americans’ depressive occurrences are more disabling, persistent and resistant to treatment than those experienced by whites,” according to the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities. Depression affects more than 17 million Americans each year and makes matters worse for Black men. Mental health is something that affects many people, but the discussion around mental health especially in the Black community is limited. Whether it’s intentional or not Wave is starting up conversations around mental health in the Black community. #Video7AskingForRodWave
