Mario, a Nintendo exclusive game character, shaking hands with Sora, a freaking Disney exclusive protagonist in a Square Enix + Disney collaboration game series. What a time to be alive, really.
This is nothing special. Kingdom Hearts itself put Donald, Goofy, Cloud, and Sephiroth next to each other, which I would argue is a much weirder cross over. And Smash Bros. is full of much weirder cross overs. Even Mario and Sonic is much weirder, considering that those two used to be rivalling products from competing corporations. So no, the "what a time to be alive" has passed decades ago.
This reveal feels like a “maybe the true reveal was all of the friends we made along the way” type of thing. Such a beautiful, emotional way to end Smash Ultimate.
Also ironic how the admittedly cheesy but still true plot to Kingdom hearts is keeping your friends with you and Disney wouldn't let Donald and Goofy's art on the wall kind of slapping the point of the games in the face

@@neilisawesome2333 strictly speaking, Sephiroth seemed to admire Sora's potential skill as a swordsman. That said, I don't know about KH1, but in KH2, they made it pretty clear that Sora didn't beat Sephiroth. After you "beat" him, Sephiroth doesn't seem winded at all while Sora is about ready to pass out, and Sephy more or less says "You're not bad...for a child. Anyway, that was a good warmup to pass the time, but I'm bored now. Go get Cloud for me, would ya, kid?" KH1 they didn't really do anything with Sephy as "story" and he was more or less just an optional boss, but KH2 gave him that little bit of story that seemed to imply he was holding back and just stopped the fight when he was ready to play with Cloud instead. That and that he was sort of linked to/born from/inside/merged with Cloud somehow...

As another comment already pointed out, Cloud and Sephiroth both disappear in KH2 and are never seen again in that series to this day, but they both wound up in Smash in spite of almost literally countless other FF characters that could've been picked. Sora, the way I understand it, just sorta vanishes at the end of RE:Mind, and now here he is. Going from one legendary crossover franchise to appearing in another, I imagine this could fit pretty comfortably in KH canon without very much convolution at all. It would be entirely meta and not actually mean anything (not unlike KH3 somehow being canon in the Toy Story universe), but still
Sora’s Final Smash is genius. He’s sealing a door with the Smash logo on it. AKA, Sora is the last fighter, so he’s the one to close the book on the Smash series for now.
We all know nintendo likes money so expect that when we get a new nintendo console or if the switch goes for another 5 hear we will get another smash game.

They did a perfect job of showing that Sora is pure of heart in this trailer. He has no violent intent and would rather make more friends than enemies.
I love how the gameplay doesn't show him fighting half the time, like he's just tossing food at Kirby and chillin with Pokemons. Truly captures his personality well! ^^

Just realized something: Cloud and Sephiroth disappeared while they're fighting in KH2, never to be seen again, until finally Sora found them in Smash while Tifa's still looking for them. Ironic, don't ya think?
I was wondering why Seph was a no show in KH3 (so far, since post release updates are a luxury that the older games mostly lacked), thinking it would have been a perfect promotion for the new remake all the while, but between this and the fact the remake is split into multiple parts, I think I’m beginning to understand now. Also, I suppose this opens the KH series to _even MORE_ surprise crossover bosses in the future.

Mario realizes what he had to do, he throws the flame turning to a key blade and opening the door for sora, a new life, to enter and as the champion of light in his world, shines new life onto everyone else, reviving the smash cast. He shakes hand with Mario as the world is reborn but not saved yet, Sephiroth is still around, but a new hope has arisen. "Light will guide you on your way to the ultimate fight." Sora both here and in kingdom hearts is seen as the light that chases the dark and fair enough, he takes the lead against Sephiroth.
Here's to the Kingdom Hearts fans that sadly are not here for the announcement today and voted on that ballot so long ago. I hope you can see this, wherever you are.
This is exactly why this announcement is so emotional for me. A very close friend died this year, and the first thing we ever bonded over was the KH3 trailer. I wish he could be here to see it, but I’ll hope he can from wherever he is.
Yeah no, there's multiple villains who want to kill everybody. Good luck trying to have a good time with Sephiroth, Ridley, Dark Samus, Ganondorf, Bowser, etc.
The character development is beautiful. The wariness you can see in Mario’s eyes as he approaches the flame, he doesn’t trust that he won’t get massacred like every other character trailer, and the relief he feels when it’s just a flying baby. The handshake was not only a “welcome to smash” but also “thanks for not violating me”
i think of the handshake more like "Thanks for dealing with Disney lawyers for me~" , "Itsa no problem!" Even after a few days, it still feels unreal and i might wake up from a coma or some shit.
What I love about this trailer is that it actually feels like a kingdom hearts game with all the different characters being alongside Sora.. I don't think crash bandicoot or waluigi would have the same effect Sora did as a last character...

Yeah, sora is a good representation as a last character, and he's a popular #1 voted character so it makes sense. Honestly, I would've loved if Crash or Sptro was in the game, but they'd have to be before, cause sora is the best last character.

@@price7498 Well think of a character like Cloud. An edgy character who barely smiles around anyone. Basically the scenario this comment is trying to make is that around the time Hero got into smash, Cloud became friends (or something like that) with him and at one point, told him about Sora and the short but great time he had with him in KH1-KH2. Two years later (now) it's the first time in years he's seen Sora, and he's glad to see him again so he's smiling unlike he normally does. It's honestly something I could see happening if they gave the characters in these trailers more dialogue and interactions, instead of just having them be emtionless characters who just fight each other to show off the new character. But either way, the thought of Cloud being happy to see Sora after so long is just something that just brings a smile to anyones face (At least if they understand the context of how Cloud and Sora know each other)
I like how the end of the trailer kinda felt like sora was going on lighthearted adventures with different Nintendo characters. Just feels like something sora would do.

I never knew how much a Smash Bros trailer with a strong Disney influence would make me feel so nostalgic. When the keyhole opens up and Sora flying through the air along with the Disney influenced KH music along with the general Disney aesthetic, I started choking up. Felt like when I was a kid watching Disney movies but now crossed over with one of my favourite game series of all time. I've never played KH but I knew how highly demanded Sora was so it makes me incredibly happy to see him in.
Yeah, he brought Disney vibes with him and it's incredible to see a part of the Disney universe in the world of Smash. There is something very special in this trailer that makes it very different from the other ones. The magic of Disney combined with Nintendo's magic, it's powerful!
They both as the same aesthetic of appeal to kids and having that child like wonder that which BOTH nintendo and Disney excel at and the combination between the two are a match made in heaven!

Right up until we saw the Keyblade this would have been the perfect imagery for a Dark Souls character. Fading light and world, growing darkness, a small remnant to held. If it the video wasn't titled I would have fully said Dark Souls
Damn this was so amazing. It was the last dlc and the last presentation which made it feel like the imagination/hype/fire was dying and as it was all the trophies turned back into toys as we would stop playing with them. It turned dark and cold like if you put them up inside your closet. Mario, from one influential figure to another one now makes the last call throwing the fire and passing the torch of undying light to Sora, someone else who in their own right has linked together worlds as mario has, brought back everyone to life with his disney magic/imagination and brought the fire back to this game.

Specifically, it's the orchestral version of Hikari. Yoko Shimomura is one of the most talented video game composers and she's very underrated. She's mostly done KH, but she did work for Final Fantasy XV, and also composed Guile's theme from Street Fighter 2.

How incredibly fitting is it that Mario, the mascot and franchise character of Smash is the one to bring in Sora in order to bring light to the darkness that they were currently in?
The theory is that Sora is actually supposed to fit the lyrics of Smash's main theme, Lifelight. 0:13 "Colours weave into a spire of flame" Smash Ball being the spire, formed by the addition of different characters (colours), until the flame goes out (The end of Smash of DLC, makes them turn into trophies, as just another toy in one's life) 0:53 "Distant sparks call to a past still unnamed" (That one spark of fire calling out to Mario, the yet to be named true final character) 1:16 "Bear this torch against the cold of the night" (Mario's sword/beam-like fire looks like a torch that can bring life to the trophy-turned characters (also, keyblades are also known to be weapons only used by users of light)) 1:40 "Search your soul and reawaken the undying light" (Sora being the undying light, in which the characters stop being trophies from the "cold of the night", in which Sora lights them up one last time) This can relate to the Smash's very first lore in 64, them being toys. And Sora being a character who crossovers to many different Disney worlds now goes to Smash to light everyone up to reawaken our favourite characters as more than just toys, but moments of our childhood. Sora is canon. Edit: Oops forgot one more important thing. The orchestra version of Simple and Clean being played is originally called "Hikari" meaning light in Japanese. This is way too fitting.
True. That's something I liked from this reveal. In other Reveals, a character is hurt, such as Luigi losing his soul to Death or Kazuya dropping people off a cliff. This reveal however was all about Sora breathing life and light back into the Super Smashers, allowing them to continue the Ultimate Fight.
As someone who's not even a Kingdom Hearts fan, at first I didn't want Sora in, but this trailer made me realize that he really does deserve to be in this game

I'm amazed on how well Nintendo recaptured Sora's KH1 look. His modeling here is perfect. A blend of cartoony and anime. Why can't Square-Enix model their characters like this? This is how I pictured Sora in a new gen type of graphics. Not the unreal look of KH3. Nintendo also did a great job on Mega Man too! That's I would be picture the classic Mega Man in new gen modeling. Even Nintendo do a better job with Sonic's model than Sega -.- lol
It doesn't LOOK like an Assist Trophy. Though when it comes to it, I think they may involve Donald, Goofy and Mickey as Assists, and potentially Riku. As for Alternate Costumes for the Miis, I've got several - Aqua, Terra and Ven, the same goes for Axel, Kairi and Xion.

If you look closely, it seems that Sora awakes, ready for another Disney adventure, but then sees that he's somewhere different. Once he sees the roster, looking up to him, he celebrated in the air. I'm so happy.

Square Enix had such character development since the game released. It went from just offering Cloud Strife at launch and not featuring any Final Fantasy spirits aside from Cloud himself, plus the infamous mere two song track to having - 4 unique fighters (7 fighters in total) - 9 Mii costumes - 26 music tracks - 3 different series represented - The most recurring characters given from DLC

I feel mario had more impact in this trailer then people realize. When the fire burned out every fighter returned into trophies and darkness proceeded to overtake them. When mario returned i feel as if the keyblade was calling to him as if he is the most worthy out of all fighter to wield the keyblade or has the potential to become a keyblade welder thus unlocking the door for sora to bring back light into smash bros
Ever since I saw that "Mushroom Kingdom Hearts" April Fools joke as a kid, I've dreamed of a Mario/Nintendo KH game. I never dreamed I would get a chance to see anything like that during my life, yet here we are. I love KH to death, and Smash has been in my life just as long. I love video games sooo much, thanks again to Sakurai and everyone involved in Ultimate.
@@hansraute3587 Jack Sparrow still wouldn't have been worthy, as the Keyblade went back to Sora's hand afterward. The Succession Ceremony states that if a Keyblade stays in someone's hands after a wielder gives it to them, then they can be considered worthy. Mario is still up in the air, as he didn't hold it long enough to see if it would have returned to Sora's hand or not. Very likely tho, imho...

Oh they totally will. Whenever they partner with another company in a big way, they end up swallowing that company. They only thing that's stopping them is probably Nintendos connections to Universal.
Honestly though, with the whole Light vs Dark storyline of World of Light, it makes sense for Sora to be in Smash. Never played the game, and was only interested in the Disney stuff, but this puts a big dumb grin on my face. Thank you Sakurai, you deserve a LONG vacation after this.

When SSBU came out, I felt like even though everyone came together (Even though Sonic is my favorite character and series), it isn't as good as I thought it would be compared to the others in the series, so I avoided getting it 3 years ago. However, seeing my other favorite character, Sora from Kingdom Hearts enter Smash Bros like this made me go out of my way to give it a try. It's been my dream for Sonic and Sora be in the same game together^^ This has been bittersweet for me because he was my most wanted character for a long time, thus making me want to get it for Christmas but by the time it got close to Christmas, my grandpa passed away:(. He would always cut up and play with me when I got presents so I know he's so proud of me upon finally knowing I got what I wanted for a long time. I love you, Pawpaw and thank you for everything. I miss you:(
There's just something nostalgic about Sora and Inkling together in that one shot.....the beginning and end of a great era of gaming. Thank you, Sakurai, for the amazing game you brought us!
Sora and the Kingdom Hearts franchise in general mean so much to me, and seeing Sora branch out into different media has made me so happy. This truly has brought me to tears of happiness 😊
I liked Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2 on PS2. Not really a fan of the modern games...perhaps i have outgrown them. Someone mentioned Master Chief, if we are talking other possible fighters 2B from Nier would have been a solid choice imo.

This is nothing special. Kingdom Hearts itself put Donald, Goofy, Cloud, and Sephiroth next to each other, which I would argue is a much weirder cross over. And Smash Bros. is full of much weirder cross overs. Even Mario and Sonic is much weirder, considering that those two used to be rivalling products from competing corporations. So no, the "what a time to be alive" has passed decades ago.
This reveal feels like a “maybe the true reveal was all of the friends we made along the way” type of thing. Such a beautiful, emotional way to end Smash Ultimate.

That said, I don't know about KH1, but in KH2, they made it pretty clear that Sora didn't beat Sephiroth. After you "beat" him, Sephiroth doesn't seem winded at all while Sora is about ready to pass out, and Sephy more or less says "You're not bad...for a child. Anyway, that was a good warmup to pass the time, but I'm bored now. Go get Cloud for me, would ya, kid?"
KH1 they didn't really do anything with Sephy as "story" and he was more or less just an optional boss, but KH2 gave him that little bit of story that seemed to imply he was holding back and just stopped the fight when he was ready to play with Cloud instead. That and that he was sort of linked to/born from/inside/merged with Cloud somehow...

As another comment already pointed out, Cloud and Sephiroth both disappear in KH2 and are never seen again in that series to this day, but they both wound up in Smash in spite of almost literally countless other FF characters that could've been picked. Sora, the way I understand it, just sorta vanishes at the end of RE:Mind, and now here he is. Going from one legendary crossover franchise to appearing in another, I imagine this could fit pretty comfortably in KH canon without very much convolution at all. It would be entirely meta and not actually mean anything (not unlike KH3 somehow being canon in the Toy Story universe), but still

Sora’s Final Smash is genius. He’s sealing a door with the Smash logo on it. AKA, Sora is the last fighter, so he’s the one to close the book on the Smash series for now.

The character development is beautiful. The wariness you can see in Mario’s eyes as he approaches the flame, he doesn’t trust that he won’t get massacred like every other character trailer, and the relief he feels when it’s just a flying baby. The handshake was not only a “welcome to smash” but also “thanks for not violating me”

What I love about this trailer is that it actually feels like a kingdom hearts game with all the different characters being alongside Sora.. I don't think crash bandicoot or waluigi would have the same effect Sora did as a last character...

Basically the scenario this comment is trying to make is that around the time Hero got into smash, Cloud became friends (or something like that) with him and at one point, told him about Sora and the short but great time he had with him in KH1-KH2. Two years later (now) it's the first time in years he's seen Sora, and he's glad to see him again so he's smiling unlike he normally does. It's honestly something I could see happening if they gave the characters in these trailers more dialogue and interactions, instead of just having them be emtionless characters who just fight each other to show off the new character. But either way, the thought of Cloud being happy to see Sora after so long is just something that just brings a smile to anyones face (At least if they understand the context of how Cloud and Sora know each other)

I never knew how much a Smash Bros trailer with a strong Disney influence would make me feel so nostalgic. When the keyhole opens up and Sora flying through the air along with the Disney influenced KH music along with the general Disney aesthetic, I started choking up. Felt like when I was a kid watching Disney movies but now crossed over with one of my favourite game series of all time. I've never played KH but I knew how highly demanded Sora was so it makes me incredibly happy to see him in.
Yeah, he brought Disney vibes with him and it's incredible to see a part of the Disney universe in the world of Smash. There is something very special in this trailer that makes it very different from the other ones.

It was the last dlc and the last presentation which made it feel like the imagination/hype/fire was dying and as it was all the trophies turned back into toys as we would stop playing with them. It turned dark and cold like if you put them up inside your closet. Mario, from one influential figure to another one now makes the last call throwing the fire and passing the torch of undying light to Sora, someone else who in their own right has linked together worlds as mario has, brought back everyone to life with his disney magic/imagination and brought the fire back to this game.
That orchestral version of Simple and Clean hit me in the feels HARD

Specifically, it's the orchestral version of Hikari. Yoko Shimomura is one of the most talented video game composers and she's very underrated. She's mostly done KH, but she did work for Final Fantasy XV, and also composed Guile's theme from Street Fighter 2.

How incredibly fitting is it that Mario, the mascot and franchise character of Smash is the one to bring in Sora in order to bring light to the darkness that they were currently in?
The theory is that Sora is actually supposed to fit the lyrics of Smash's main theme, Lifelight.
0:13 "Colours weave into a spire of flame" Smash Ball being the spire, formed by the addition of different characters (colours), until the flame goes out (The end of Smash of DLC, makes them turn into trophies, as just another toy in one's life)
0:53 "Distant sparks call to a past still unnamed" (That one spark of fire calling out to Mario, the yet to be named true final character)
1:16 "Bear this torch against the cold of the night" (Mario's sword/beam-like fire looks like a torch that can bring life to the trophy-turned characters (also, keyblades are also known to be weapons only used by users of light))
1:40 "Search your soul and reawaken the undying light" (Sora being the undying light, in which the characters stop being trophies from the "cold of the night", in which Sora lights them up one last time)
This can relate to the Smash's very first lore in 64, them being toys. And Sora being a character who crossovers to many different Disney worlds now goes to Smash to light everyone up to reawaken our favourite characters as more than just toys, but moments of our childhood.
Sora is canon.
Edit: Oops forgot one more important thing. The orchestra version of Simple and Clean being played is originally called "Hikari" meaning light in Japanese. This is way too fitting.

I thought the opening sequence, where everyone is a trophy is emulating how worlds in KH fall to darkness, and the citizens becoming heartless.
True. That's something I liked from this reveal. In other Reveals, a character is hurt, such as Luigi losing his soul to Death or Kazuya dropping people off a cliff. This reveal however was all about Sora breathing life and light back into the Super Smashers, allowing them to continue the Ultimate Fight.
That and representing the end of new smash ultimate content which is why it ended how it started (inkling looking at the symbol burn out)
I thought that all the trophies meant that my favorite purple wah-ing assist trophy would finally be playable
As someone who's not even a Kingdom Hearts fan, at first I didn't want Sora in, but this trailer made me realize that he really does deserve to be in this game

It doesn't LOOK like an Assist Trophy. Though when it comes to it, I think they may involve Donald, Goofy and Mickey as Assists, and potentially Riku. As for Alternate Costumes for the Miis, I've got several - Aqua, Terra and Ven, the same goes for Axel, Kairi and Xion.

If you look closely, it seems that Sora awakes, ready for another Disney adventure, but then sees that he's somewhere different. Once he sees the roster, looking up to him, he celebrated in the air. I'm so happy.

I feel mario had more impact in this trailer then people realize. When the fire burned out every fighter returned into trophies and darkness proceeded to overtake them. When mario returned i feel as if the keyblade was calling to him as if he is the most worthy out of all fighter to wield the keyblade or has the potential to become a keyblade welder thus unlocking the door for sora to bring back light into smash bros
Ever since I saw that "Mushroom Kingdom Hearts" April Fools joke as a kid, I've dreamed of a Mario/Nintendo KH game. I never dreamed I would get a chance to see anything like that during my life, yet here we are. I love KH to death, and Smash has been in my life just as long. I love video games sooo much, thanks again to Sakurai and everyone involved in Ultimate.

Oh they totally will. Whenever they partner with another company in a big way, they end up swallowing that company. They only thing that's stopping them is probably Nintendos connections to Universal.
Honestly though, with the whole Light vs Dark storyline of World of Light, it makes sense for Sora to be in Smash. Never played the game, and was only interested in the Disney stuff, but this puts a big dumb grin on my face.

When SSBU came out, I felt like even though everyone came together (Even though Sonic is my favorite character and series), it isn't as good as I thought it would be compared to the others in the series, so I avoided getting it 3 years ago. However, seeing my other favorite character, Sora from Kingdom Hearts enter Smash Bros like this made me go out of my way to give it a try. It's been my dream for Sonic and Sora be in the same game together^^ This has been bittersweet for me because he was my most wanted character for a long time, thus making me want to get it for Christmas but by the time it got close to Christmas, my grandpa passed away:(. He would always cut up and play with me when I got presents so I know he's so proud of me upon finally knowing I got what I wanted for a long time. I love you, Pawpaw and thank you for everything.
