Burkie: “he wants money and wants to win”
SPORTSNET: “yeah he could leave Toronto and make more money but he won’t win”
Burkie: “there are teams other than Toronto that are competitive”
SPORTSNET: *head explodes*
Lmfao 🤣 it’s like they live inside a Leaf
I get it like the Leafs are an OG franchise and what not, but damn man.. there's other franchises out there
They dont want to be a Leaf and help the team win even via cap sacrifice, then trade em, sick of paying extra for players that dont want to be here or so called hometown heroes taking up all the cap saying they Leaf fans from the start.
And who is going to sign him to a team that cannot afford him because of the Cap.
It's entirely possible.
It's also half a decade away so I'm not going to lose sleep over it.
Really the leafs are at that win now time already. In 5 years they'll probably be on the downturn either with or without a cup and he'll either leave cause he's already accomplished what he needed to in Toronto or because the leafs are hopeless
@@redbullsauberpetronas ????l?
*_If he doesn't re sign they will trade him after or during the fourth year. Matthews has a full no move in his fifth year._*
Chungas Revenge or they’ll just let him walk and use his money to sign McDavid the following season
He will be gone long before 5 yrs
Burke also believed in Tyler Biggs
Leafs 1967 Burke is a blowhard
Hes got a hate for the leafs lmao suck it burke
A lot of GM's thought Biggs was going to be good. Show me a GM who is 100% correct on players lol
And dion phaneuf
Shawn Erickstad he basically traded Dougie and seguin for kessel and crippled them because of it
Who else randomly got this recommended to them on UA-cam after the Yotes' arena news?
Austin Matthews is going back to Scottsdale, to start his own Alpaca farm.
😭😭😂😂😂😂😂😂
Hopefully some pics of Matthews in his coyotes pyjamas surface soon
Gord legit flipping out over this hypothetical.
Gord is a bum that was just clever enough to trick a senile Harold Ballard into naming him GM at 30.
I can't believe Gord's reaction. On draft lottery day, there's no way Matthews was crossing his fingers thinking 'C'MON TORONTO".
Mario Lemieux made the playoffs once in his first 6 years in the NHL
Joe sakic had a horrible time also. Winning usually takes time
Are saying Mathews is comparable to Lemieux
Pens cheated for Mario forever tainting 2 of their cups. Lucked out on Sid after getting 2nd overall the year before(why anyone with a top 10 pick the year before deserved and equal chance to land Sid idk) tainting 3 more of those cups. Got 0 folks it's not fair but it is what it is. Luckiest team in NHL history not even close
@@mr.devil9577 their cups are not tainted they had to fight to win
@@alvimatin5023 why would be saying matthews is as good? Hes stating that lemieux was clearly better and even he took time
I’d imagine being a hockey player from Arizona is a pretty big chip on Austons shoulder and he would love to represent his hometown.
Steven Rye just as McDavid would love to come home and play for the Leafs
@cashtheyen Was. Pittsuburgh ain't home
Gordon Graham McDavid didn’t sign a shorter term deal though, Matthews did.
@@pb1300 McDavid didn't make the playoffs last year, Matthews did.
Gordon Graham What does that have to do with anything? If McDavid was interested in going back home, he would have taken a shorter term deal as well.
i mean, anything is possible, but isn't this the guy that thought Kessel was worth 2 1sts and a 2nd?
@Dr. Andrew M. Goodman not really sure what that has to do with what i said
I mean after he was traded out of Toronto he won 2 cups so who looks like a loser now.
Phil is a pretty good player man haha
Hes also the man who drafted Tyler Biggs so...
@Todd Stamos jesus I forgot about him
You could tell by their names they weren’t going to make the NHL. Or at least be a top line player.
You probably believed in him to
He drafted the sedin twins tho so thats pree good lol
@Charlie Nistor They retired [ Zero Championships]
Taxes are one thing, but don't forget sponsorship money
I interpret Burke's statement about Matthews leaving as "NHL players only care about the money." Given that he has 30+ years in the NHL as an agent, GM and President, he might know a thing or two about that.
That's naïve! NHL players play for the love of the game. If they wanted to make money they would get a real job!
Grow up, bruh!!!
Yea yea yea, just like how McDavid is coming back to Toronto. Hockey players seem more motivated by money, status and team success. There are no players that move around based on where they are from, it just doesn't happen even with the stars.
Lol so a FA might leave a team when his contract is up. Wow what a headline.
Burke also believes in that haircut
LOL
He looks like a mighty ducks villain
Gordon Bombay better watch his back
Matthews fav player is Shane Doan. Nuff said he’s going home with the biggest contract in nhl history
LOL Toronto Hockey is not a winning environment it has not been for over 50 years.
It isn't about the maple leafs it's about MLSE.
Just do the opposite of whatever Burke says. That’s what we learnt
Uhmmm... No
@@xKillZone99 that is literally what everyone learnt, always pick the opposite of Burke.
Yup. That's a great point. Burke says he wants to win the cup. Toronto says nope. We would rather lose. Just keep doing the opposite of what Burke says. 👏👏👏
Years later - the best thing FOR THE GAME, and the flock of Americans playing; if he left to Arizona it would change that franchise around completely.
Toronto bypasss alot of our tax negatives with the signing bonuses. Those are taxed around 15-16% as opposed to 56ish on the base salary
The things Matthews said about the coyotes makes you think he would love to play there sometime
Matt Kelly just as McDavid would love to play for the Leafs
Its because of Babcock that's why Matthew's will leave.
@@stevesuk4569 yeah, that's why Matthews signed a 5 year deal. Because he hates Babcock, lol. You haters are funny.
@@stevesuk4569 Babcock will be gone in 4 years. His contract ends before Matthews does.if Keefe sticks around he will be the headcoach year 5 of the deal if not sooner if babs doesn't get this team deep in the playoffs
zoe donavon Yeah, cause we all know Tampa is a playoffs beast... 🙄 The Panthers still need to show what they can do.
Honestly if I'm Arizona, I'm selling everything to go on a massive rebuild to be ready in 5 years..
That would be silly to do lol
If he’s traded or leaves at any point I will honestly cry like an infant for days lol
A few things
1) 5 yr contracts aren't "bridge" deals. They're long term contracts. Bridge deals are short term (1-2 yrs) to kick RFA squabbles down the road a little bit. See PK Subban's situation with Montreal some years back
2) Nylander isn't remotely overpaid. He's just not. With his scoring track record, he's almost exactly in line with the RFA contracts that aren't huge steals (Timo, Pasta)
3) Burke is flat out incorrect on the tax issues. NY, Cali, etc are almost identical tax wise. But lost in that is that you get taxed by the state you're playing in. So you get the tax advantage of playing in a low tax state for 41 home games
4) The "hometown" trope is boring. Yeah, JT came home, but Leaf fans have been waiting for a couple of generations now for a "JT" to come home. It just doesn't happen that often. Elite players don't move in free agency very often at all period.
5) I love that winning and being in Toronto is important to everyone other than Matthews apparently. Matthews is going to leave a wealthy, perennial contender in Toronto for a welfare team that he'll either have to take a massive discount for, or force to ice basically a AHL roster around him (Auston's next contract is likely to be into the 13-14 million dollar range)?
@The Dirty North Cap will be 85-90M in 5year. Matthews 14M contract will leave plenty of water in the Well. Even for the Leafs if Matthews decided another 5years in Toronto is the best decision for him at that time. Being Captain and possibly having the Legendary status of Hero in Toronto, if he can bring Lord Stanley home to Toronto. idk . If many players would be able to walk away from that, [Captain / $$$big$$$ / Championship/s] especially if only to start a possible rebuild somewhere else. Missing the playoffs in Arizona, just to watch the Leafs continue to roll in the Playoffs without him [would be a bitter pill to swallow]. Leafs would lose a great player if he left, 11.6M is a nice chunk of change to spend on a free agent or two. If the Leafs do win a cup or two in the next 5years and Matthews does leave, Stars will be lining up to take a spot on Toronto's roster. Big money and a legit shot at a Cup. It's all just talk, let's see how the next 5years go; speculating on someone's career choices 5years down the road is purely conjecture and nothing else.
I don't think you realize that state and federal tax are two different things. NHL players in California still wind up paying less taxes than NHL players in Toronto.
Wow this is a few years old now and this take is still very much realistic
If the yotes are still in Arizona he really could be the savior of the franchise. The marketing would be insane. He also seems like he wants to play there
Lol
I do think he is missing an important point. What does Austin Matthews make in commercials and such in Toronto vs. what he would make in Arizona? I have to think it's a huge difference. What market has really good tax incentives, has a hockey rabid fan base and has a large commercial market?
There really low tax’s here in Arizona hardly any on sum things
Looking back on this after this years playoff blunder hurts. Although I'm a Sens fan I want the leafs to be competitive so that we can have crazy Battle of Ontario series. Its that Auston Matthews is kind of in limbo but I think Burkie screwed the leafs over when they traded for Kessel and missed on Tyler Seguin and Dougie Hamilton. Those lads on this team right now would have led to the Leafs having long-term starish players saving money not having to sign John Tavares.
they need different caps then, US and Can teams
It’s funny that A, Matthews ended up staying in Toronto, but even funnier that Kyle Dubas of all people ended up taking Burke’s job.
It's one thing to be a good player looking for a good deal, it's another to be greedy, ask for to much and be stubborn about it. Let 'em rott!
Newsflash Sportsnet, Toronto is NOT a winning franchise and haven’t been for a very long time. What you do during the season ultimately means nothing. It’s what you do come playoff time that really matters. So if Matthews wants to play for a winning franchise and make more money because of taxes then yes he might look to go elsewhere.
Leafs are a winning environment! Haha good one
It's even funnier hearing that in 2021 😂
@@gutchmang2430 Choking a 3-1 series lead to the Habs is honestly the most embarrassing and most spectacular loss the Leafs have lived through XDDD
@@Moda-pf8wt being from the other end of the 401 there have been many many more much more embarrassing moments in Leafs history ;(
@@willflynn7015 Sorry man, didn't mean to mock good fans like you. I just like rubbing it in for arrogant Leafs fans, which you clearly aren't.
BURKES GOT OPINIONS
Too bad none of them are relevant.
Thats all he has leafs knew to fire him
I love Burkie... the man is not wrong with this and it rings true today. But I do love how the hosts relate Toronto to winning. Really? They haven't won a playoff round in almost 20 years!
I will never understand some people’s drive for money. Like, does everything really come down to being just a little bit richer? I don’t know that Austin Matthews feels that way, but Brian Burke CLEARLY does.
Mathews and his parents seem like loyalty is a big thing. Tax advantages vs all the extra money he makes in Toronto with endorsements he wouldn’t get in Arizona
Well he was wrong about the oilers.
Nhl should count in coming up lock-out-negotiation various taxrate for equal salary caps.
Lmao! Burkie got those other 2 guys so flustered and upset when he said he thinks Matthews is gone in 5 years!!! 😂😂😂😂😂😂
"It's a slow late August Day, what are we going to talk about?" "I dunno, I'm stumped." "Okay, let's do the usual wind up Leafs fan thing then."
Leafs blew a 3 to 1 Lead
why not just adjust the salary caps for each team based on approximate tax advantages? Doesn't have to be perfect 100% accurate figures, but it evens the playing field a bit more.
The reason Canada pays such high taxes is their healthcare is free. So if you're only basing salary caps based on taxes, adding free healthcare for life! No big sponsorships for and Canadian teams or players. You can't have your cake and eat it to! Americans don't have free healthcare, it's very expensive. Florida players home insurance and taxes sure aren't cheap either. Flood and sinkhole insurance is out of this world too. You want to be fair? Let's be totally fair.
Perhaps your GMs need classes on how salary cap works. You don't pay huge amount of money for your 4 top forwards and say screw paying defensemen work for free next year. Get Captain Austin, First mate's, Marner, Nylander, and JT to work penalty kill too. Make them work for their huge paychecks they had to have. What will the Leafs do for defensemen next year, when their cap is tied up with 4 forwards?
@@T4Orick Income tax is not insurance. The bottom line is this: Player A in Toronto who gets paid $5 mil takes home significantly less than Player B also getting paid $5 mil nearly anywhere in the US. We can go back and forth about cost of living quirks in different regions, which ultimately cancel each other.
He is a native of Arizona ... brought up in there system
Young team makes the playoffs three years in a row. Unlike your Edmontons and Buffaloes.
All Sportnet can do over those three years is talk about trading Nylander, Marner offersheets and how Matthews wants to go back to America.
And they wonder why they're an utter failure when it comes to viewership.
I agree with him. Matthews didn't sign for long term, there's a reason for it. Either the reason is that the Leafs couldn't put up the cap hit, or he didn't want to stay long term.
@Shawnaldo75 Yeah, there's also been a big shift in the past few years towards younger RFA's not being dragged through the "bridge contract" aka team saves tons of money by not paying you, and now a lot of younger guys are demanding shorter deals and getting raises sooner. Subban seems to be the one that comes to mind in sort of kicking that whole thing off. That and the bonuses that the three Oiler kids were making in bonuses during their entry level deals.
Buke Ahn or either because in five years, with the salary cap going up and if he keeps performing the way he does, he will sign for big money and for longer
Or after 5 years, he reaches full unrestricted free agency in the prime of his career. Most likely banking on the cap continuing to rise, leading to an even bigger payday.
Every year players want more money matthews only signed 5 years because he can get close to 15 after his contract
Crosby the financial anomaly though based upon he the hugest endorsement deal maker in the league
That's a nice table
If he does leave we can't hate him for it. Just cherish those years he was here.

Love seeing how much maple leafs fans seethe at the thought of Matthews taking off in 5 years.
Im pretty sure any fan of any team would be mad if a player of that calibre left. Look at the new york crylanders. Tavares stuck around for 10 years and they couldnt even appreciate that despite the team around him being trash the whole time

Not really worried about it since Arizona is gonna move soon
As much as i want to deny it I feel like its true
The guy hasn't even mastered the complexity of a tie.... nuff said. As you were.

@@jordantanner4981 Actually Oilers almost made it to the WCF in 2017 so at least they've won a series lmao.
Hows it feel to be so wrong
So sad,,to see the old school values fly out the window, over taxes. Not pay but the taxes. I know some of my heroes don’t say much about this new age, but you get the sense that their love of the game was a little more about the game.
It started with Ovechkin. Rookie ELC straight to 13year $9m+ per season.
This is sure to go well
I called it too. Matthews will most likely leave for Arizona if the contract is comparable enough to the Leafs offer. Here are the reasons why he will go: 1) If Leafs win the cup in the next 5 years, he will have achieved his goal and dream as a player and get his fill. He won't need to stay in Toronto longer for anything else. Now he can go and do something else he's wanted to do and that is play in his hometown for the team he grew up cheering. 2) If the Leafs don't win the cup in the next 5 years, he can say the plan in toronto failed and it's not going anywhere. He needs a fresh new start and Arizona by that time will be a contender (at least they should be with all the high draft picks and development time they will have in these 5 years).
If the Leafs and Arizona both offer him say 16m per, then he's picking Arizona. If Toronto offers him 16m and Arizona is only able to offer him 11m, he will stay in Toronto, because that is too much money left on the table. It has to be close enough. Plus, you know that Arizona is following this and going to do everything they can to prepare themselves to have the cap space and a good contending team by the time the 5 years is up.
In any case, the pressure is on. The Leafs need to win a cup in the next 5 years because this rebuild is complete and if they can't get it done, then we might as well have to start another rebuild after 5 years (not a complete scratch but a modified partial rebuild....because we won't be able to keep everyone in 5 years).
Lmaooooo
@@T4Orick now that he's not named Captain, even more reason why he'll leave in 5 years.

was it worth it maybe not now but to kessels credit i believe kessel scored over 50 goals with the leafs each season he played or close to it. the rest of the team wasnt good enough to help him out. Im pretty sure the next highest scorer was around 25 goals a season now thats nuts. plus riemer and bernier yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
@@ArkanSubotic Ya, people say they didn't win with him, but look at Pitts, he gave them great scoring the whole time he was there and helped them win that cup again. He's really good. Now, the leafs sucked super hard, that's on them. They didn't get good goal tending until recently, and they've started to put a team together, Kessel would crush other teams if he was on Toronto's first or second line now. Ah well.
Milan kessel scored 50 every year? you have zero clue what you’re talking about he has never scored 40 once on any team
Johnathan Schroeder awwww don’t hurt my feelings there stats king. Feel free to correct me wise master of the frozen ice

Will the Arizona Coyotes be in Arizona in 5 years?
The answer is yes
There will be a team in Houston sometime soon. Best bets are the Panthers and Coyotes- flip a coin.
Yeah
Gotta make room for McDavid
FIVE years? That's like half of a player's career... Useless speculation with that kind of a time window.
Possibly and will go out west to Arizona or California but more likely Phoenix
If Babcock is still coaching, then Matthews will be gone. Babs has a bigger ego than any of the players.
This is a big part of it. Get a coach he gets along with and Matthews could stay. Keep Babcock and every player is going to want out except for 35+ year old vets.
5 years from now? I can't think of what I'm going to do the next day sometimes. Who know's what's going to happen in 5 years that a lot of time.
I believe 75% of current players will leave their current team in 5 years. Not exactly going out on a limb.
Burke also believed he would win a cup in Toronto in 5 years..... until he got fired

The team since then has showed that Brian Burke was not the issue. The team just doesn't have heart or grit.
*_If he doesn't re sign they will trade him after or during the fourth year. Matthews has a full no move in his fifth year._*
No he doesn't.
You can't get trade protection during your second contract, no matter the length.

Not to mention Auston Matthews might like to win a Stanley Cup at some point ;)
within 5 years he will, and he will be hurt by 5 years comes anyways
Thats old news. There was reports of him not wanting to be here from the start
This aged well 😂. Burkie wrong again
Thats why in the next cba its time for the bigger market teams to take the league back...get rid of the damn salary cap or replace it with a luxury tax...smaller markets have too many advantages in terms of the cba...
Brian Burke won a cup on the back of a team built by Brian Murray
PlainBagel Bryan Murray’s Ducks didn’t have Beauchemin, Pronger or Scotty Niedermayer. Burke built that whole defense
We have a new Don Cherry on our hands.
Take a shot every time someone misspells Matthews as Mathews below.
Might not be a team in Arizona in 5 years.
This isn’t a surprise, Matthews comments imply he wouldn’t turn down an offer to play in Arizona
You know it’s a bad deal when every other agent turns around and says I want that too.
I agree about playing for a Yank team eh taxes and warmer .....And not as much pressure playing in da states
I also have a feeling Auston will be gone after 5 years, and specifically sign with the Coyotes. Comparing it to today and in a different sport, Kawhi could have stayed in Toronto and probably won another championship here, but decided to go home and to a more competitive conference. I think Auston really loves where he's from, spends his summers there, and wants to help Arizona grow even more as a hockey city.
Arizona isn’t a city :). It doesnt matter, because that team can’t find a home.
It was diffrent with kawhi though. The leafs are the biggest franchise in the NHL. But the raptors are a pretty small franchise in the NBA. It's also not as fun to play for the raptors rather than the leafs because toronto is the only Canadian team and most NBA players are from the USA. So it feels so much different when they play for the raptors. The clippers are also one of the biggest franchises in the NBA and kawhi was able to play with a superstar like Paul George. You see it all the time with the raptors how players don't want to play for them. But everyone wants to play for the leafs
I don't think everyone wants to play for the Leafs. That's something that Toronto media has spun and people have gobbled it up, any original 6 team has history, and I could see anyone want to play and WIN with them. Torontonis not a winning franchise and dealing with the media in Toronto is a huge turn off compared to other cities and just like Burke said, the tax players pay is a turn off.
@@chrishaughton1747nah he stay

I can't wait for him to walk and make you look like a fool
When the Florida Panthers win the Stanley Cup this year 2023.. Austin should go to free agency and leave for Florida (or request a trade there).
It’s simple if Mathews hasn’t resigned an extension by the last year of his deal Toronto trades him to Arizona in a sign and trade type situation were Toronto gets a landslide in prospects picks and a young player or two!
Teams won't trade when they can have a UFA without giving up roster players.
If he walks it would suck but I'm sure McDavid will get tired of missing the playoffs in Edmonton by then.
How many players of his calibre, left the team that drafted them? The idea that every player will join their home town team would mean that majority of the league would be a Leaf player, yet its hardly the case.
98 percent of Mathews contract is bonuses ( only pays capital gains15%). In TO doesn't pay tax and the commercial monies is out of control good !
I think Mathews will stay in Toronto if there a competitive team and I think there could be a good chance mcdavid will be in Toronto in a couple of years if the oilers don’t improve
Mcdavid Matthews Marner would be a deadly front 3
I said that mathews wanted to go back to coyotes when he was drafted. He was at a camp in the GTA and heard an interviewwhere he said he plans on going to Phoenix so try and win a cup
