  • This week I take you through the basics for installing a sight gauge (aka fuel gauge) on your chopper. How to lay out the holes, prep the material for welding, welding techniques for getting a good finished product and more.
    The machine used in this video is an AHP AlphaTIG 201XD. Bungs were welded with ER70S-2 filler wire using a foot pedal with the machine set to 136 amps. Tungsten is 2% lanthanated, 3/32 diameter with a Furick Jazzy 10 cup and 100% argon, roughly 15CFH.

    Thanks for the tip on the welder! We are looking at an inexpensive but good way to stop having to drive an hour away just to borrow a friend's welder. Keep it up man these videos are great!

    Grease you should look into buying some stainless steel filler rod for some of your projects. It really makes your welds pop with beautiful rain bow color. Even more so with the big cup you use.

    I use a cable tie attached to my filler cap as my sight gauge, just a cheapo dip stick

    Thanks for the video grease. I am currently debating going to pick up an evo motor and 5 spd tomorrow.

      If the price is right I highly recommend it. I’ve had great luck with this one. About 45k on it and still running the factory pistons and cylinders.
      What are you planning for the build if you get that motor and trans?

      @greasesgarage well a chopper lol. Its got one of those 3.5in open primarys still attached looks to be what is left of someone's 2000 style softail.

      @greasesgarage guess i should specify its from a 85 softail.

    Can’t wait to do this to my sporty, but what was your process for getting the metal shavings out of the tank after drilling?

    • @greasesgarage
      @greasesgarage  9 місяців тому +1

      You can give it a good shake with the hole at the bottom or even add some water to flush it out. Just be sure to dry it fully so it doesn’t rust

    How do you clock the elbow fittings? Do you run them in and mark them before welding, or just send it hard on the last turn

    • @greasesgarage
      @greasesgarage  Місяць тому +1

      I do clock them first but to be honest I often find that the best way to get them perfect is by varying the amount of Teflon tape I use. If I need the rotation to stop sooner, I add more tape. If I need it to turn more. Less tape. Once it’s in there, I never get any leaks and it never needs to move again

    How do you get all of the gas out before you weld? I feel like it would be dangerous if there was leftover gas in there.

    • @greasesgarage
      @greasesgarage  5 місяців тому

      Absolutely. You want to drain it all out, then let it sit outside in a well ventilated area for a day or two. You shouldn’t smell gas in it anymore, if you do DO NOT weld it yet.
      Another method is to wash it out with water after letting it sit for a day, to ensure there is no leftover gas.
      This method has always worked well for me but I am not an expert and can’t give you 100% certain advice without being there in person to see what you’re working on
