  • LG Display's third-generation OLED panels include a new technology that promises peak brightness up to 2100 nits and better off-angle viewing, all without a single extra watt of power. How did they do it? The new tech -- call it MLA, META, Brightness Booster Max, or whatever -- is remarkably simple, yet effective. Here's how it works, why the best TVs and computer monitors will have it, and whether you might want MLA in your next TV.

    Conventional logic that a lens can only focus or disperse light would expect viewing angles to be reduced in exchange for greater brightness. That they've boosted both just by using more lenses is some deep wizardry. Can't wait to see it in person!

    • @B_Ahmed1234
      @B_Ahmed1234 Рік тому +3

      Well the angles where the light is being reduced are the angles that point backwards, so all angles in front of the TV get an increase in light output.

    • @neutronpcxt372
      @neutronpcxt372 Рік тому

      @@B_Ahmed1234 Yes, that's actually the main driving factor for the huge optical efficiency increase.
      LED emitters (especially those without domes) tend to lose a decent bit of light on the sides, where the light is lost.
      That's why reflectors and TIR lenses are used: not only to focus the light, but to also improve luminance in realistic usage scenarios.

    I think that final point about perception is an important one - I’ve owned a Panasonic LZ2000 (I’m U.K. based) for a couple of months now, which I’m 100% happy with. My shortlist was the Panasonic and the Sony A95K both of which I got to audition in a dark room. What I can say is that the differences between the two sets was very small, with the Sony sometimes looking better and other times the Panasonic looking better.
    In the end, considering the price difference (the Sony was nearly £700 more at the time) there is no way it could command that extra price for what I was seeing with my eyes. What this shows is that although on paper the Sony had the supposed superior tech, when you have the engineering prowess of a company like Panasonic, things are not so clear cut. I’ve learned over the years through my love of HI-Fi that one amp can have inferior specs to another, but still sound significantly better - the same is true with TV’s. At the end of the day, you’re not watching a spec sheet, you’re watching or listening to the end result of that spec sheet, a subtle, but important difference.

  • @dcaseng
    @dcaseng Рік тому +33

    This is really impressive because it doesn't require extra power, or a way to cool the panel. It's pretty simple in concept, and the boost in brightness is pretty large.
    It also doesn't sound like something that should be a huge additional expense. MicroLED is the holy grail, but this looks like something that should deliver all the brightness you could need.

    • @Navhkrin
      @Navhkrin Рік тому +1

      @@shugo7337 NanoLED is marketing term. True term is Electroluminescent Quantum Dots.
      There are various problems with MicroLED.
      - Cost of manufacturing.
      MicroLED requires a very complex manufacturing pipeline, there is no easy cheap way to manufacture millions of tiny LEDs and arrenge them on panel. We found ways to do this cheaper but it won't ever be as simple as manufacturing quantum dots which you literally can do in liters.
      - Flexibility
      MicroLED panels are not flexible. This, while seemlingly important, is a bottleneck for would be the 'holy grail'.
      QNED's also do not suffer from burn in. They don't rely on any organics. So they have all the advantages of MicroLED and then some. Much better suited to be the holy grail.
      We are closer to mass producing QNED's then we are to MicroLED's. It is a very new technology in comparison to all else but Nanosys has been following their roadmap very well so far. They did deliver amazingly well with QD-OLED's and QNED is the next in their roadmap. Given their amazing track record of low cost ultra high quality delivery I have confidence that they will deliver with QNED's
      Not to mention, Quantum Dot's are only few nanometers in size. This basically unlocks any emissor-driven limitation on resolution. This means ridicilious resolutions such as 16K on 27 inch is possible with QNED's

      Getting the best camera lenses, torches, screens , light bulbs etc probably means lots of ways to allow and control light transfer through a medium . Samsung loves to copy - so they may come up with their own solution . This method is ultimately will be cheap - unlike some special glass in top lenses, binoculars, glasses etc - not sure if proprietary coatings are expensive to cut haze etc . If this tech is really really good - with EU rules etc ( power usage ) - maybe LG will have to sell it to all comers ( think certain tech must be made available if considered a necessity ) ie standard essential patent (SEP)

      Only hope is Philips, Sony making it affordable, if there is no DV support, just going to get a G3.
      The only difference between G2 vs S95B were specular highlights in HDR content and full white APL scenes.
      But due to lack of DV the LGs looked better in movies and S95B was then only better in games and SDR.

      Go watch HDTVtest videos to educate yourself on why brighter OLED tv's are needed!
      Once a tv is in the accurate picture mode ie Filmmakers Mode on your LG B9 OLED tv. Watching a 1000 nits 4K blu ray disc every scene won't be 1000 nits. Only a small percentage of scenes in the movie will get upto 1000 nits.
      Like the sunshine on a very bright sunny day. Lighting flashes, explosions, vehicle headlights late at night etc. In the real world glancing at the sun can be 10,000 nits, fireworks over 3,000 nits, vehicle headlights at night over 3000 nits etc.
      So why wouldn't you want a brighter OLED tv that can reproduce those specific bright scenes more realistically. Like in the real world 🌎

      Only warm scenes looks better on S95B.

    • @TroyAllenSr

      I can't see any scenario where this would raise black levels: It focuses the light of EACH pixel forward, and reduces "bouncing/waste" of light. OLEDs are black-black because "off is truly off". So there would be no light to "send forward" to raise black levels.
      Again, this can only help reduce the need for Static Image Burn-In Prevention. Lower output = greater perceived light, so they could loosen up the auto dimming so it is not so noticeable.

Companies need to be adding these features to all their TV sets, similar to the way TCL and Hisense are adding MicroLED to all their 2023 models. Let's just hope TCL and Hisense use "True 10-Bit" panels in their 2023 models rather than the worthless "8-Bit plus FRC" that has so many problems with gradients, posterization, and macroblocking.

    I wonder how many technical improvements they already have on the shelves waiting to be implemented in the next iteration. I cannot believe that they saw QD Oled last year and then started thinking about how to beat this and then have this ready in the next year. If they could have waited a bit longer, they would have just to secure their marketshare in the future.
    That is also why it is good that the EU is forcing the manufacturers to improve their efficiency. Once they are forced they apparently can. These things should not be left to the market competition allone.

At that point you no longer use QD as an enhancement layer for LED or OLED but the quantum dots are emiting light themselves.
      QD Oled was always just a transition phase until they either have managed to produce it reiliably or if they already have, until they have milked the QD Oled technology until the last penny.
