Or because they wanted to "be respectful", society has a tendency to look away when we see people who look different from the conventional, especially in a situation like Sal's where a person has scarring, because we want to be respectful to them, but sometimes walking on eggshells about it can be just as harmful.
What makes this so much better is that this showed us a growing point in their brotherhood. Most people look away, whether it's out of respect or disgust and it is a sad thing but very true and Sal probably experienced this so many times to where he had to wear a mask to go in public. Larry, however, didn't, and didn't stare in disgust or even comment about it, and assuming this was before Ashley would pull Sal's mask off to wipe off some blood from Travis's punch, it may of been a huge stepping stone for Sal. Larry not looking away, nor staring in a weird way, may have been Sal's realization that Larry is his brother, before their parents got married and after. That may of made him comfortable with Ashley seeing his face, maybe even Todd and their other friends in the background. This is so much more wonderful, beautiful, and inspiring then it already seems if you really think about the timeline and what Sal has been, could of been, and will be through. This animatic is also one of the first ones I've seen that shows what Sal really would've looked like, with the missing eye and the attempted facial restructure surgeries, and I love it so much.
