Things Have Been Rough, But We Have a Plan (Life Update)

  • Our first ever life update video covers way more than we wish we were sharing for this kind of video. We thought making this video would be simple - filled with exciting news, fun moments, and easy to share stories. This video does get there eventually, but first we've got to explain what's been going on for us.
    This video was actually filmed 3 months after the last video. We intentionally filmed extra videos before coming home to make sure we had videos to share with you during our visit to Canada. It's a good thing we went over board and filmed so many videos before coming home, because we were in Canada for WAY longer than we expected!
    When we first arrived in Canada, we thought we'd be here for a bit over a month, and then we thought we'd be making a semi-permanent move to Thailand! This plan excited us because Thailand is a great place to continue traveling from, and we thought Mico had a job there that would bring us steady money while we traveled from a home-base. You see, it might look like we are traveling on secret trust funds, but we aren't, and we're running out of money! We are working really hard on making enough money on UA-cam to keep this travel life up, but it is a biiiiiig risk. And the job in Thailand would have brought us stability while we filmed new travel videos on weekends and holidays to keep up the channel. In this video, we explain how that plan panned out.
    The job in Thailand isn't why we were in Canada for so long though... that honour belongs to my (Nicole) health. We had a scary month and gained a lot of perspective on living life to the fullest at all times. It really made us relook at our life and take some big risks, even though it's scary! We are eager to give life 100% though, and I think we'll be doing that with this new adventure.
    I promise, we are going to give you the WHOLE plan in this video! We share our upcoming travel plans, what is happening with our dog, why we were in Canada for so much longer than we thought, and so much more. It's a lot to catch you up on, so grab a coffee or glass of wine and come along with us for the rollercoaster.
    If you enjoy our videos and want to give us an extra special thank you, we would love to have you become a channel member! Check out the perks here ua-cam.com/users/nicoleandmico...

    ======================
    Hey there! We are Nicole and Mico and in March 2021, we quit our jobs, sold our belongings, and began traveling the world! We never thought we'd be making travel vlogs on UA-cam, but after realizing that we had a unique opportunity to share our adventure and make the world feel more familiar and inviting to anyone watching, we took the leap and picked up the camera! We hope our videos show how wonderful, delicious, and friendly the world can be.

      Thank you for sharing your story! I was so grateful that thyroid cancer is so treatable, and it sounds like that has been your experience as well. There is a high likelihood that I will have the nodule and right thyroid gland removed in the coming years despite it being benign, so I love hearing that 40 years later, you are still going strong 😃

    I decided to become a minimalist a couple of years ago just because I’d rather spend my money on traveling and not have to worry about having big things in my house that are worth too much or things I dont need, and things I’d worry about having in my house that are worth money and I’d have to be there to take care of them, or be around them cause there worth alot, or something! It also feels good to not have to worry about having too much stuff because then I feel like I’d always have to “keep up with the Jones’!” Instead, I’ll have more incentive, money, and freedom from material things for traveling and experiencing the world and its different cultures and foods! Good luck to the both of you and may you have excellent health from now on! 🚘🗿🌶️🐶

    Wow, what a relief!! So glad to hear you're ok, that is so scary. Late last summer I went through something similar and also had a biopsy done... that wait for the results is tormentous and so many things race through the head. Luckily it also ended up being something that will need to be watched over time, but is treatable/manageable.
    Happy, safe travels. Hope you have a blast on the road ahead and looooove that you are bringing your pup along to experience them with you!!!

    Glad that you are well. I've had similarish experience this year. I had spinal injury and for about 10 months my ability to walk was getting less and less. The biggest sadness that I had was all the travel and experience, particularly in nature that I would miss out on. Then all of a sudden the nerves started healing. So this summer, I plan on leaving my job to drive the Pan American. I'll be following a similar route as you for the first year, but plan to keep going as I really want to see Patagonia. Being reminded that my health is the most important thing in life really helped kick my butt in gear to keep on living to the fullest, even though we feel we're taking quite a risk by continuing to travel and working hard to sustain ourselves through UA-cam! So happy you’re all clear!! Funny how those risk factors work - I was low risk and it turned out to be cancerous with a tumour the size of a softball hiding behind my collarbone haha. But even at that, I had one mildly uncomfortable night after surgery and that was the only thing I ever felt…and a quick radioactive iodine treatment a couple of months later with zero side effects is killing off any remaining cancer/thyroid cells. Have fun in Mexico, we’ll get together next visit!

I'm going through something similar, where the specialist said that I may need surgery in removing part of an organ because of some nodules. I'm not too worried, but it is annoying to have to wait before I can make plans.
    Hope you are enjoying your time on the road! How does car insurance work going through so many countries? And how will your budget change while on North America, where accommodations can be quite expensive?
    Looking forward to seeing more of your adventure!

    • @nicoleandmico
      @nicoleandmico  Місяць тому

      We really hope you get good news as far as you health concerns. The waiting can sometimes be the hardest part because life just seems to be on hold while you're in the in-between phases. We hope you get the information you need soon.
      Car insurance can be a bit tricky - some countries need it, and some countries don't, although we plan to always get car insurance if there's a way for us to secure it. So far, we've been able to buy car insurance for through All State and in Mexico we can buy car insurance online as well. We're not too sure after that, but we'll look into it once we get to that point in the journey.
      Accomodations in the USA will definitely be more expensive than we're used to in most places we've visited around the world, so we'll go through the states quickly. Mexico will be more affordable for sure :)

      And about health care - we actually lost access to healthcare at the 2 year mark of being away, but we were able to get it reissued immediately upon returning to Canada. Thank goodness, because just a few weeks later I found the lump!

My husband and I always look forward to your travel videos as you do them so brilliantly. In your video before this one though you said travel was over ... that you were broke. So I'm curious how you're financially doing and how you are now managing to continue? Did your garage sale(s) bring in that much money? Travel on .. be safe ... and, enjoy your days! Thank you so much for what you do. Take care.

      Thank you so much! Great question about how we're continuing financially, we got awfully caught up in the health part of our journey and didn't explain the money very well! We're making a go of making a proper income off of UA-cam, and Mico has picked up a part-time, remote job that helps as well. Our revenue from UA-cam and all that it encompasses has been much more stable in the past months, so we are hoping to keep growing that. So far things are looking good! As a worst case scenario, we'll pick up additional paid work that we can do remotely to help us stay on the road :)

One of the reasons we got an older vehicle is because we really don't want to stand out as foreigners while we're in Mexico and Central America. Our goal is to blend in as best we can, at least for now while we adjust to this new lifestyle. A rooftop tent is definitely not out of the picture though!!
