My niece was a big reader until she was 11, then she had a neglectful GP who missed that the headaches she was having was a tumour. She was saved, but not her sight. She "listens" to books, and plays at different speeds, according to her need.
PhD Student in History here, my new favorite channel! I love listening to people discuss the importance of reading. All I have time for at the moment are history books but they are fun reading for me so it's not bad. Also, Mein Kampf is a primary source which should be studies and context does matter. Oh and favorite banned book on the list was the Great Gatsby...It was such a fun read as a teenage. :)
I really like the discussion on ‘are audiobooks reading?’ I think people need to understand that an experience being different does not mean it is inferior, and acknowledging that difference is not some kind of degradation.
No book should be banned. Period. When I was growing up, no one ever prevented me from reading whatever I wanted to read. I am very thankful for that. I'm reading The Mirror and the Light by Hillary Mantel and Lou Reed: The King of New York by Will Hermes.
14:39 please never skip the filmography of James Incandenza in Infinite Jest!!!! as a matter of fact keep going back to it. nothing is random; if you pay attention, all the key moments and elements in the whole novel are in there. it explains so much of what happens and what happened in the past and even what happens between the end of the book and chapter one. i do agree that infinite jest is a book that is to be read at least twice if not more. i did not see this until my second read.
I love the discussion about book bans! Mein Kampf is a primary source for history of WWII. I don't think we should ban primary sources from study by students. But I also don't believe in banning books. Not every book is for everyone, but we shouldn't restrict it from everyone
Banned Books Week is this week in Norway, and when researching which books to put on display in the public library, I went through lists of banned books from different countries. The list(s) from USA was insane, no other western country ban so many books. In Scandinavia, the number is zero. We did ban books back in the day, mostly because of sexual content. Fun fact, Norway banned the Monty Python movie "Life of Brian" in 1980 because it was considered blasphemous. This prompted Sweden to market the movie as "So funny it was banned in Norway!"
Great discussion, as always. One of the best Vietnam novels I've read so far is The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien -- very unusual narrative structure and a war novel that is really about the mental burdens of living in an absurd world that no one can control no matter how hard they try.
You guys are consistent with your conversations. Always intelligent without taking yourselves too seriously. And no, books should not be banned. Ever. Also, I now need to dive into Infinite Jest.
The are audiobooks reading discussion - I don't see it as people saying that you can't or shouldn't talk about the audiobook performance. Most people who read with audiobooks do talk about narrators that stand out!! But when people ask "did you read x book" are they asking if you held a physical book and used your eyes to read the ink on paper? Or are they asking if you have experienced the story and can talk about it with them? In some cases it would be appropriate to talk about your experience with the audiobook, but that depends on the circumstances of the conversation
I also read a lot of these "banned" books in school. Going to school in New England is a lot better than going to school in Mississippi.

Very glad that she's been able to find a way to still enjoy books!

I'm reading Bad Monkey (thanks for putting it on my radar, Andy) and Interpretation of Dreams.

Brilliant points made re: banning books and Huck Finn. Love the mushroom comparison.

Reading Something wicked this way comes for the fall season vibes
I don't think books should be banned but if I wrote one and it was banned I would feel accomplished
580 pages into Infinite Jest. Also dipping into Postmodernism RIP Fredric Jameson.
Were you thinking of "The Turner Diaries"?
Reading Kokoro now. Thus far a bit disappointed although I can see how it clearly influenced a lot of Japanese literature that came after it.
I' m reading Don Carpenter's Hard Rain Falling and D. Hunter's Chav Solidarity.
Read banned books.
The book was the turner diaries?
Yes, that's what I was thinking of, thank you!
The Voyeurs Motel by Gay Talese
You think .you act. Two different things.
The baned books are the best because they are spacial.sometimes the truth.
Ban Infinite Jest for crimes against endnotes.
lol I wrote this before watching the episode.
You give to person.everything and he chooses how to live.basic.
Vitriol. GREAT band
