- With the game with ONE week away from now, here we have Marvel's Spider-Man's second antagonist: Martian Li AKA Mr. Negative!
It was really great to see someone like Mr. Negative get some exposure thanks to this game. Li worked well serving as the main villain until Otto takes the scene. I will say it was unfortunate that he doesn't get the most satisfying ending in the game, I'm at least happy to see that he'll appear in the sequel as Miles confronts him face to face. Will probably make another video on Miles and Li depending how that story goes.
With 2/3 villains covered, I will be posting an announcement for the special project I mentioned in the last video, be sure to keep an eye out for it within the community tab on the channel.

I respect your opinion and disagreement. Although I find Phin to be a difficult and frustrateing character to sympathize for. The story in the game wants you to feel sorry for her so bad yet her actions make her so hatable and irredeemable.
Otto was somewhat the same way but you at least relate to him and understand where he's coming from. Befor and he even after he became Doctor Octopus you can feel the emotional impact of his transformation and descent into villainy. It was only by the time that he reveiled that he knew Spider-Man was Peter all along made you stop sympathizing for him.
They didn't do any of that with Phin. They just shove into the story of the game and later it was reveiled that she was the Tinkerer as a “big surprise” when you can the see the twist coming from a mile away. (No pun intended)
@@raven3067 Technically Phin being the Tinkerer isn’t a big twist to the viewer (hence why the second Tinkerer appears we get the reveal rather than drag it on like Arkham Knight for example)
It’s meant as a surprise for Miles storywise as puts him in a dilemma knowing his best friend is a criminal and that he’s Spider-Man.
Her motives are similar to Li’s but Phin takes to take a less evil approach. Since Li and Otto didn’t care who got hurt on their paths for revenge. And with Phin she’s trying to stop Roxxon from killing more people while Li and Otto just wanted to expose and kill Norman.
I’d even go as far as to say Phin’s tragic backstory was handled better than Li’s since by the time we find out why he’s doing this, it’s beyond the point of feeling bad for him given what he’s done. But you can still understand why at least.
Miles founding our about it early gives him time to talk about it with Phin, trying to stop her before she does any real harm. It’s why it’s in character for her to snap out of her vengeance the second she realizes Miles was right and that her actions is destroying Harlem.
I would say Otto loses any sympathy once he releases “Devil’s Breathe” just to spite Norman. Him revealing that he knew it was Peter was when Peter lost sympathy for him. Since before that he was blaming himself for Otto and when he asks MJ when it’s time to give up on a friend.
The game doesn’t really force you to sympathize with Phin but to understand where she’s coming from and why it’s important to her. It’s why Miles agrees to what she’s trying to do but not how she’s approaching it.
It’s fine if Phin isn’t your cup of tea on the kind of villain she is. I just personally don’t understand why Li and Otto having sympathetic qualities makes them great while Phin gets her demonized for it especially when she’s the least evil of the three.
I will agree that Phin is the least evil of the 3 villains. But she's definitly not the smartest either. Both Otto and Li have sympathetic qualities because Li accidently killed his parents because of Normans failed attempt to cure him. And Otto is sympathetic because of his connection and father/son relationship with Peter.
Both Otto and Li were once good men that Peter looked up to. Both important role models who had a desire to help and change the world. Their desent into villainy is what makes us sympathize for them because we as the audience went through their journey and saw how they were once good men.
Phin on the other hand doesn't go through any of that type of character development. She's just shoved into the story and right away she is revealed at The Tinkerer. And then we find out that her bother, Rick died because of Roxxon. Soon after Rick's death Phin because Tinkerer over night. And then she somehow she is put in charge of a discount cyberpunk criminal organization known as the underground. Then she has advance technology that is capable of overwelming Spider-Man (Miles).
And just to let you know that Phin has access to all this without explaining “HOW?”
Where did The Underground come from?
How did Phin get her hands on so much advance cartoony technology?
How is Phin able to perform acrobatics so well and manage to overwhelm Spider-Man (Miles) in combat?
Why haven't we heard anything about Roxxon in the first game?
All these questions not answered. I do like playing as Miles but his story is just overly rushed.
@@raven3067 I’ll do my best to go over each point here to help you understand Phin better.

She does if not better than both Otto and Li since not only does she listen to Miles before the betrayal, she also was able to see past her blind rage before anyone got hurt at the end. Unlike Otto and Li who didn’t care at all.

Same with Mr Negative. We see Phin in two cutscenes being a normal person right before her villain reveal just like with Martin.

Phin made a symbiotic relationship with the group. She creates their weapons and they in return help her with her goal. Otto did the same thing with the 5 villains which is why they work for him without any question.
“She has advanced technology and is capable of overwhelming Spider-Man”
Phin has been established for her tinkering skills (hence the nickname) her being science buddies with Miles is important to that. And it overwhelming Spider-Man is a smart move for them since it’s a city with two spider-men around. It’s best to have weapons to deal with them if need be.
“Where did the Underground come from?”
Like with Li and the Demons they were waiting for a moment to strike during the power gap. The group weren’t a big deal until Phin gave them weapons and direction. Once Phin is gone the group faded away as mentioned in Spider-Man 2
“How did Phin get her hands on so much advanced “cartoony” technology?”
First off, this is a world with radioactive spiders, criminals in ridiculous costumes, and literal aliens in the second game. Phin’s bio-tech is not that crazy. And where she gets it is likely tied to Fisk’s money that the underground are using at Fisk Tower.
“How is Phin able to preform acrobatics so well?”
The underground train their members in hand to hand combat and using their weapons on dummies as seen when Miles infiltrates their Fisk Tower base. Also Miles isn’t very experienced while also having trouble reasoning with Phin most of the time which leads him to getting beat by her multiple times.
“Why haven’t we heard about Roxxon before this game?”
Besides a Roxxon building, Roxxon was in early development at the time of the Rick stuff. It’s not until the Miles game does Roxxon go public with nuform. Also villains aren’t always set up. It’s like asking “where was Otto before Spider-Man 2 or Electro in TASM 2?”
But yeah there are the answers for a lot of the “unanswered questions” you had.
Again just to make it clear. It’s perfectly fine if you don’t like Phin. I just wanted to provide input on some of these claims to her character that seemed abit unfair.
Great video! I'm not quite sure what specifically here I can compliment, i really like both of the transformation parts, but everything here works so well, I really like the dialogue and scenes you matched together too. I think I have the same feelings as you on Mr negatives character, i thought he was really great but his ending was kind of disappointing, either way I'm glad he got such a big spotlight in this game, I'm very interested in what they're planning on doing with him in spiderman 2
Thank you and yeah Li here was abit difficult to make since he wasn’t as personal or emotionally deep as Otto or Phin, especially with the ending but I managed.
Curious how big his role is since he’ll be an emotional obstacle for Miles.
@@MichaelHarlan1999 it's a little strange that the relationship between peter and martin wasn't very deep, since they work together like everyday to help other people, i guess most of the emotional stuff was saved for otto but still. I don't think they're going to do a whole lot with him in 2 since he already got secondary villain status but also since venom and kraven will be taking center stage, i'm sort of wondering if they're going to have him turn good or maybe just like semi good and cure venom or have him help get the symbiote off peter maybe, i think he'll help in some way like that, since he creates anti venom, which could also happen i guess, but that would feel kind of bloated
@@bloodyfire7461 I idk if they’ll go that far since yeah it would felt abit bloated. He’ll probably have a short but important role to Miles’s character. I imagine we’ll get some Spider-Man 3 vibes where Miles will learn to forgive Li so that he doesn’t take a path of vengeance as well as move forward with his father’s passing. Will probably be important for when Miles helps Peter if the suit makes him aggressive about May’s death and Miles can help Peter move forward and get the suit off him.

Great stuff! Mr Negative is one of those "somewhat recent" villains that make me want to read/watch more Marvel stuff, Spider-Man in particular.
Martin Li was my favorite villain from the 2018 game, and knowing that he's in the sequel that is coming out today makes me want to play it even more.
I really liked that in the first game they paid homage to the whole "Martin Li plays chess with himself" (moving one white piece everyday, and waking up with a black piece having been moved by Mister Negative) by putting a chessboard in his office, in which the black side is winning.

I haven't been as present on your channel recently, since you've been on a Marvel binge...
And I like some Marvel stuff, like currently I'm reading *The Immortal Hulk* because I'm a massive Dario Agger fanboy, and he's played a big role in that run...
I still hope to see him as the big bad of some MCU tv show, or even a movie maybe?
And I also buy anything that Garth Ennis does for Marvel, the most recent one being *Punisher:Soviet* (a fantastic Punisher run, 6 issues long, highly recommended).
Anyway, between *MAWS & Superman & Lois* , it's a great feeling to have both an animated Supes show & a live action one \o/
Lex Luthor is fantastic in Supes & Lois, the whole sequence in which he make Bizarro stronger and stronger while screaming in his face that *"WE NEED MOOOOOORE" sent chills down my spine.
I was so happy when season 4 was confirmed for the start of 2024; even if it's the last season they'll be able to give us closure, since it's the last *Arrowverse* season...
Between the fantastic John Cryer in *Supergirl* , followed by Titus Welliver in *Titans* season 4, that's 3 live action Lex in a row who all kick ass (and weirdly they're all rocking a nice beard to go with their bald domes).
