    Making some more progress on the 1960 South Bend. The split bronze bearings look great. The spindle is also in excellent condition. Excited that it's looking really good so far.

    If you drained the oil without removing the oil cup you would remove the top plug to assist oil flow. Great video.

    What an odd looking bearing setup on the spindle....will be interesting to see it go back together and see how you set the preload

      There's no preload like you would with a tapered roller bearing. There should be about .001" play fore and aft on the spindle. The shims under the bearing caps set the clearance of the bearing to the spindle. There needs to be enough of a gap (maybe .0005" max) there to allow oil to get into that area.

    Top plug so you can put a wire into the bearing area to hold down sprung loaded wicks. during reassembly.

      I think you are correct! I went back and looked at the video again to see if the oil cups would clear, and they do!

      Yes. Lots of cleaning. Lots of painting. I am going to taker my time with the paint and get it right, or as right as I can make it.
