    A DUTCH STEERSMAN TELLS
By Henk van Kuijk, Dutch journalist, 5 january 2023
In Holland I talked to the steersman of the Dutch firm Smit Tak, who was on the research ship that investigated the wreck of the Estonia last summer. This was done by a small and a big ROV, a robot steered camera submarine, that took films and pictures in HD. Not all the material has been published by the Swedish government (Havericommissonen). Later in summer a private investigation was done by Marcus Kurm and his crew from Estland. The steersman told me that the crew had to sign a contract promising that they would not take any pictures or films at all. But he commented: “All over the ship were Swedish television people making reports and films.” Though his ship was prepared to look for the site of the Estonia by Gps, they could easily track the spot by the clear traces of oil and diesel leaking out of it, probably from lorries aboard that got rusty or bumped by movement, and had started to leak. The ship lay upside down, had moved a little, so a kind of sea valley was formed. It was not at all rusty, or overgrown by sea plants, it looked as if it had sunk recently. It was hard to look into. Therefore the research team bored new holes in it, to get a better look inside. Curtains still hung before the windows, and bodies could be seen floating inside. He was aware that this research trip would not be the last one. They made one from Poland and another from Västervik. Their ship was hired by Sweden. This time also relatives of victims and survivors were invited to watch the research. I think Sandra Hedrenius was there too. The steersman was surprised when I told him that Fokus Estonia found out that at the bottom of the bow visor malformed metal was found, this was caused by temperatures over 1200 degrees. He did not know anything about it, strange. He allowed me to inform you here about his experiences. Reactions? hm.vankuijk@kpnmail.nl
