I’m a stills photographer and was super excited for the R5 mark II. Rumors were this camera would be a wow camera. The only wow I saw was the price. I really think canon dropped the ball. I do shot video sometimes but still shooting 1080. Brides are watching their videos on their phone. 4k 8k is over kill. I mean I get it but they dropped the ball for photographers.
@@billrhea And that's a great opinion. But maybe you should wait until you have something to base it on. Right now you are just throwing darts hoping to hit a wall.
Excellent points on the positive and the negatives on the camera Carlos I appreciate your honest, insight, as opposed to the “they flew me out and paid my hotel. I’m gonna be honest with you I promise“ initial reviews. I got back into photography about a year and a half ago after a 20 year break. I had always used the Canon ecosystem and still had a few EF lenses so I jumped back in on the canon side with an R6MII (on sale) with the intention of upgrading to the R5MII when it came out. I am almost exclusively a still photographer, 75% Landscape, 25% wildlife and some Astro-landscape although I have played with more video lately. Being new to the digital world, but an experience photographer I agree 100% with your “give us a tool for the appropriate workflow” thought process. I considered the Sony A7V and have mentally went back-and-forth, questioning my decision over the last year but after reviewing the true Spec information at launch, I think I will be quite happy with the R5MII, especially on the wildlife side. That said, if I had jumped in initially with an R5, I don’t think I would be upgrading. Two disappointments - I was really hoping for a 60 megapixel stacked sensor, even if the speed drop down to 20 frames per second and I was also hoping for two CF slots. Keep up the great work.
I'm confused basically I have plan of getting R6 mark 2 just 4 months used with RF 24-105 4L and RF 100 2.8 + 256 GB card 300MB/s In 3465 USD. On the other hand R5mark2 is 4265 USD. I also don't have any lens. There are 2 options first is buy the 2 lens with R62 or 2nd option is R52 with Rf50 1.8... later on I'll upgrade my lens 24-105.. is it worth to sacrifice more money. I want 4,5 years future safe. If you're in my place what you'll do?? Is it good offer or suggest me any other option!!
I love the R62. For me, the biggest benefit to upgrading was the higher megapixels and the raw pre-capture. I shoot some wildlife that tends to require I crop in post process and 24 MP was right at the limits for that if I want to print larger prints (but it was more than fine on a phone or even a computer screen unless I zoom into stupid levels). Also the RAW pre-capture is a game changer for birds and wildlife. It comes down to two questions.1: do you tend to do lot of post process cropping AND print your photos over 11x14. 2: do you shoot wildlife or action? If the answer to these two are no then I would go with the.R62 and the lenses . If the answer to these questions are yes, then the R52 BUT you won’t have the money for lenses for sports and wildlife. Based on the lenses you are talking about it appears you do not do sports or wildlife and if that was the case for me, I would be completely happy with the R62 now and for years to come. Also be aware they are upgrading/releasing the R63 in early 2025 so if you can hold out, the price is probably gonna drop more for a used R62. Hope that helps
I don't agree with some of what you said. Most new camera releases deliver more to videographers than photographers. Photography features have hit a wall for a while. The R5 II definitely delivers more for videographers and it's definitely a hybrid camera. Hybrid doesn't mean it gives the best of both worlds, it means a balance. What other photo camera does better video? Those are just my opinions. Thanks for sharing yours
Damn, you are talking that real talk brotha. I agreed with a lot of the points you made in this video. Yes our company has the R5. As for the R52 as great as it is - solving full-size HDMI when I need it, still made it hard to propose an upgrade. I don't see the user experience being a massive leap, and I kept wondering if in fact it may be due to the place we are in with technology - the place where everything is so incredibly good that it's hard to see a massive leap anymore. The leaps are huge for Nikon because video is so new for them. For Canon it has felt that for years they cut features out of certain cameras and release them at sky high prices. Then they shock us with the C400 which is WAY under the typical pricetag Canon does for a camera like that. So seeing the R52 pricetag makes it a tough sale. Might be a good rental item depending on the job. I always appreciate your videos. UA-camrs often drive me nuts because they don't seem to talk about real life working scenerios. Your insights are where I turn because it truly is RAW Talk without feeling like I'm watching a highly curated video to get likes, subscribes and sponsors.

Every aspect of the Canon R5 MKII is an improvement over the MK1. The eye focus, the incredible AF improvements, pre-rolls, full size HDMI, C-Log2, 16 stops in C-Log2, 30fps in electronic shutter, three different camera grips one specific with a fan for video, tally lamp the new features goes on and on. I fail to see why anyone can complain about this camera and as others have said if you cannot get great results from this camera it’s then “operator error”.
I think because in the end none of that gets me better photos. I’m mostly a photographer and at $4300 this is a no go since I already own the R5. Many creators were telling us this would be a wow camera and it’s not. Eye focus does not work. Tried in on the R3 and it sucks.
I’ve been waiting for this, Carlos! Other Canon cripple hammer points that’d be great to fix in the R5C. Or a MKII, if they can be bothered to continue the line, assuming anyone still cares by then. - Gating remote camera control in video mode behind a 1k grip accessory. No bueno - Lack of XC protocol support, which limits its utility in a studio/multicam workflow
I gave up on Canon a couple of years ago. I had the c70 and R5c, great cameras but always crippled by something, overly bulky lenses and bodies especially for mirorrless technology. I switched to Sony and couldn’t be happier. And this release just fortified my decision. The Canon cripple hammer is a real thing

the oversampled 4k60p was not in r5 as well, only in r5c. so you can wait for r5cii. that would have all what you want and more features. this is an upgraded r5 only. not an upgraded r5c.
How do we get 4 channels of audio recorded with just one stereo mic jack? If you need oversampled 4K : record in 8k and downsample in post or use just use the proxy.?? You’re paying for 8k, use it.
I guess you can record 2 channels from hotshoe, and two - from the mic jack (and probably another option is to record all 4 channels from internal mics). But 4K audio (24 bit LPCM) is available only for 8K RAW. All other video formats only support 16 bit AAC stereo
The camera does have oversampled 4k, just like the original r5 if you choose fine, from what I understand. At least in 24p. It seems like 4k above 24p is not oversampled. A step back compared to the r5c, but you at least you can do 8k 60 raw of you want better high frame rate quality.
Is there really a true hybrid camera that gives you the best of both worlds? The fx3, fx30, A73 are all video cameras in a mirrorless body. Canon doesn’t seem to be interested in doing that. Outside of the R5c they haven’t made true anything that matches that. As long as the consumers understand that we shouldn’t be upset.
The technology of the R5 II is AMAZING, but probably does not provide that much functional benefit to the average user. I think in-camera upscaling and noise reduction is fascinating, but not something most shooters will use.
You probably didn't get to the point in the video where I simply stated that my expectation was that I would gain functionality of quality of life improvements without giving up any of what I already had in the R5C.
This doesn’t make sense, this “ every thing is so much more expensive, how dare they make their camera more expensive “ argument. Do people not get inflation? The 5d 2 was just as expensive relative to the R52 given the market. Also stop asking canon for stuff in their cameras when the cameras you’re comparing them to don’t give you it either, or worse, charge you for it 4 years after release. Unreal.
