I really love the double meaning in Discord "I've seen your show, and I know how you die." It makes everyone think he's talking about him being destroyed inside a mind... yet the truer meaning is about someone sacrificing himself for those he loves - something the selfish Bill, despite all his foreknowledge, would never expect or see coming.
Also luring him somewhere by distracting him with something he wants, or playing on his ego. He was too busy enjoying his fight with Discord (especially inside his mind) that he didn't even notice he wasn't in Equestria
this death battle gets debunked, its rigged bill cipher is at best universal and discord multiversal+ i can type an essay on why and show their attack potency, lifting and striking strenght, speed ect.
My favorite thing I haven’t seen anyone mention yet is that in the portal to Equestria, you can see a letter on the ground, meaning that the letter he wrote at the beginning of the fight was a farewell note to Fluttershy and the others, he always knew that he might not be able to stick around to say goodbye so he did it the only way he could
@@monsterplay1007it's an interesting question to consider, since Bill is capable of eradicating entire souls and spirits from existence. But I also realize Discord reshaped himself from nothing before, too. Regardless, it's a really solid and touching way to go
@@monsterplay1007honestly it’s hard to say how he died as we don’t know what bill did to him either way I guess everybody wins as they both come back no matter what
I believe Discord foresaw that he was going to lose, and that's why he wrote that letter at the start of the fight. Probably copium but maybe he's still out there. You can't truly 𝘬𝘪𝘭𝘭 chaos, after all.
I like the spoiler hidden at the start; Discord starts the fight writing a letter to Celestia saying Bill would learn an important lesson about Friendship. In the end, he sacrifices himself to dump Bill back in the Nightmare Realm to protect his friends, the letter he wrote to them can be seen on the other side of the portal before it shuts. Discord was never going to win, so he prepared in advance and used Bill's tunnel vision against him to win the war instead of the battle, saving his friends even though he couldn't win. He did indeed teach Bill a lesson.
What's more, he did it the same way Bill lost last time. When he says "I've seen your show" he wasn't talking about recreating the literal events of Bill's death, as it looked like. He was talking about making Bill overfocus on a goal (killing him), making Bill underestimate him (by making him think he took he misunderstood why Bill lost and took it to literally), and he performed the same type self-sacrifice Stan did, something Bill simply can't understand and thus never predicts. I also assume that what's written on that letter is a goodbye to Fluttershy, he just passed it off as a joke so Bill wouldn't suspect anything.
@@transfandomman1699 I think it's more Discord knowing he doesn't have to do anything anymore, he saved his friends and his home, he knows Bill's fate is sealed, as a concept himself, Discord will likely come back thanks to his friends, that letter you mentioned was also being written at the start of the battle about the importance of friendship and ultimately, that's why Discord gets the higher ground as he'll return back to his friends, but Bill is still stuck in his realm.
@@dragonquest8ftw1Discord’s conceptual existence is the whole thing that makes this war unwinnable for Bill. Even Reddit agreed on that somehow. So they were talking in Battles, which Bill won, but Discord most definitely won the war.
I adore how their deaths, Bill’s in his own show and Discord’s in this death battle, show their true natures. Discord died a noble death because he’d learned to care more about the world and Fluttershy than he did about himself. Meanwhile, Bill died begging and desperately trying to make a deal. He only cared about himself, so when he died, there was no solice. Only the terror of perishing after existing for over a trillion years. He went out kicking and screaming with no dignity.
Makes ya feel any better, the book of bill ends with us learning that he is trapped in a therapy facility. Nobody will ever leave until they’re better. Since bill is who he is,until he can change and keep the change, there is no way he can come back to reality.
I'd like to imagine that Discord also counts as a Cosmic Horror, that he also gets sent to that Therapy Facility. But gets very early release due to his generally good behaviour. And maybe even pays Bill Cipher a visit from time to time in the future
If you pay attention, after Bill and Discord leave the puppet bubble, the weirdness bubbles are all gone. This is a subtle hint that Discord transported Bill out of Equestria
I think that it rather was that he was slowly "fixing" the place before trapping Bill. First you can see the ponies floating without being statues, then the bubbles and mosnters are gone and finally he teleports Bill to his dimention. All of that and the way he hugs the yellow pony's flag makes me feel that Discord alredy knew from the start that he wouldn't beat Bill so he just distracted him long enough to repair all the chaos and then trap him
@@mdsystems4463 You could also see that as the reason he knew he’d lose. He knew that if he started ‘restoring’ everything, it would totally lower his power. He’s the embodiment of chaos, so any ‘order’ Discord does would make him weaker. Not only is the bro a troll and was he able to teach Bill the meaning of sacrificing yourself for your friends, but also what the definition of a ‘Pyrrhic Victory’ is.
Moro always makes masterpieces. He's the guy who animated all the hand drawn Bill Cipher scenes during the fight, with the exception of when Bill and Discord were rubberhose animated.
More like a friendly bond. But you're right about one thing: the scene of Fluttershy calling Discord is a pretty sad one. Discord's death may be sad but it was an honorable one. He showed Bill that even though he won the battle, Discord had the last laugh (16:44) all along.
@@jeffreygao3956yeah there’s no need to worry my friend, fluttershy will get to see discord again he’s not actually dead he’s still alive.. however it will take a long time for him to come back to the Mlp world again
Fun Fact: If you play this battle’s song “Discordant Decipher” in reverse, there’s a reversed message that says. “Why are you listening to this part backwards? Don’t tell me you’re some kind of tinfoiler. You do know the song doesn’t decide who wins, right?”

I’m not that good… but near the end, some of the frames have some repeated words in white in a black background, that says “Transform The Question Demon”. It might either be a reference to an episode, or possibly a direct quote said by someone in an episode of Death Battle.
I love how this fight embodies the essence of chaos. Chaos are usually related with evil, but this episode shows how Chaotic Good vs Chaotic Evil is vastly different.
I would call Discord at worst is Chaotic Necessary-Evil. Several times he’s helped others by being the villain encouraging others to grow stronger and build bonds.
I love how bittersweet yet kinda honorable the ending was, Bill won the fight but Discord ended up having the final laugh, both metaphorically and literally
Here's a thing there ofc is someone stupid enough to except Bill's deal so either way Bill can just takeover the Mlp universe again without Discord in the way
Headcanon: With the Book Of Bill being a thing saying Bill is stuck in the Theraprism by Axolotl with that ankle bracelet on restricting his powers, Axolotl saw this fight and saw Discord as someone Bill could be, so helped speedran his revival process in return for being Bill's sponsor to help him grow.
Okay, but Fluttershy worrying about where Discord is is SO damn heartbreaking. I imagine the note we see in front of her and the others was like a farewell/apology to them. He literally gave it all for them in the end, and went out like a true hero...
Remember: it's only a matter of time before Discord comes back. He probably left them instructions for how to help speed the process up. He wouldn't want to keep his dear friend Fluttershy waiting...
It's also a good way to give something to the people who wanted the losing character to win. That even if they lost the battle, they still got something significant out of it.

@@ShadeSlayer1911 True, if the contest wasn't named Death Battle, it would be easy to argue this was a win for Discord, despite his friends probably not seeing it that way. Though, I'm sure they'll make him a nice statue to commemorate his sacrifice.
@@David9413 see, that's why this way is so satisfying for both sides. They both win in their own ways. I know nothing of th3s3 characters before this episode, but I want3d discord to win by the end of it. And win he did.
This is what I loved about the Magneto vs Tetsuo fight. It made perfect sense given their characters, and Magneto understanding the pain and suffering of a tortured child and mercy killing him when he lost control and turned into a horrific monster was a great touch.
14:15 Super small detail that I loved: after Discord buries Bill under all those desserts, it ends with a cherry on top coupled with the classic "ding" sound effect. When it cuts back to Discord, what is he holding? A desk bell. This man supplied his own sound effects.
I appreciate that even losing Discord succeeded in his goal, protecting his friends. Death Battle is, by its very nature, pairing up beings who would never fight in a duel to the death, no holding back even if the character themselves would not kill. This is one of the few ones where a without question EVIL individual fought a mostly good guy. And while the bad guy was much more powerful, in the end he still didn’t “win”. Discord achieved his goal, protecting his friends. I like that.
Well, Bill wasn't more powerful.... he just had a better mindset for taking out someone who was an equal in strength. Still, making Bill's victory a Pyric one was still a awesome move on his part.
Even if discord lost the battle against bill, but at least he won the war and had the last laugh by saving Fluttershy :) And it's also been established in the lore that Discord will always reform since he has to exist. He's a concept, you can't destroy a concept. He will always come back we just don't know how long. :p Basically if Bill ever comes back, discord vs bill cipher will happen again and the same thing repeats.
Usually characters in Death Battle fight for no reason other than the occasional bloodlusted character or misunderstanding motive, but due to the context they found themselves in, Bill had the clear goal he was always shooting for since millenia. Because it's canon in both verses that there are infinite universes with infinite possibilities, this is canon in another timeline. The setting is just what Bill's wanted and struggled for for so long. It was freedom in a new dimension for him to conquer. This felt like a climactic story battle that would have took place after several arcs foreshadowing Bill's return and the big showdown. I never watched MLP, but from what I've read in the comments, this was a rare battle in which Discord was fighting for someone other than himself. Discord's goal was to save the ponies. If it meant killing Bill, that was no problem, but saving his friends was his top priority. In the end however, he died, but not before getting the slip on Cypher and sending him back. Did he cause it? Maybe. Did he end it? Definitley. Discord lost the battle but he won the war. Cypher will have to start all over again and take who knows how long to get out of his dimension, but next time, the ponies will probably have prepared by then and avenge their comrade who avenged them.
Technically Bayonetta managed it, but it wasn't intentional: the setup for that battle was Dante's entire goal being her - alive - which he didn't realize and expressed in exactly the worst way. Presumably he's now going to have to find a way to revive her... and probably can. (I do like that setup because it fits both series' narrative flavours: Bayonetta relies on the very long planning, little of it her own, to ensure whatever she feels like doing in the moment will turn out to have been the correct choice, while Devil May Cry lets Dante make loads of critical mistakes on the grounds that he's expected to be both capable and willing to then fix all of them.)
@@Mr._Pancakes well the ponies don't necessarily need to "avenge" him, as discord can just reform if there is enough chaos. they would just have Pinkie Pie, the pink pony, throw a chaotic party and that should revive him.
I would argue Widowmaker vs Black Widow. Widowmaker successfully assassinated her target which Black Widow was tasked with protecting. She dies, but her mission was successful.
This was the most in-character Death Battle I've seen, and I salute you. I love the ending. I'm a bigger Discord fan, which is why it's so cool that he loses the battle, but wins the war. The trickster being tricked will always be satisfying. And though they're both tricksters, Bill can tend to let his game falter when he has a physical form. When he's trying to make a deal, lies and tricks are all he has, but if he can use his weird powers to blast someone, he will. Discord is more in it for the love of the game, his instinct is to humiliate and break his opponents, not kill them. Loved this so much.
This is probably THE best death battle ever. From the narrative, to the characterization, to the mechanics, animations, etc. 10/10. The fact that the loser got the most respectable death in the series. Really well done.
That and the fact that Discord will eventually reconstitute, and he banished Bill from Equiestria in the process, thus saving everyone, and leaving Bill stranded in a burnt down husk of a dimension means that by all means Discord won the war here.
@@treybrzezowski3259 Yeah i was honestly confused by the analysis; I thought that Discord had won and that he had only teleported himself instead of dying, with the idea that they couldn't kill each other and so had to settle for something, I guess.
Someone at Disney even said there were a couple months that anyone visiting the studio could have seen a whiteboard that said “how to kill god” when they were trying to figure out how to kill bill. They made him so powerful that even the writers were stumped on how to kill him
This is why I hate disney and gravity falls as a whole and it’s creaters they made that stupid gross out show that give me nightmares and a existanal crisis
I love how this mirrors Bill’s defeat in Gravity Falls in a lot of ways. Grunkle Stan sacrifices himself to lock Bill away to protect his family and Discord does the same.
Funny how: Both were voiced by the same VA in Brazil (Discord has 2 VAs actually. Second one is also Soos' voice, Cesar Marchetti) Today is the birthday of said VA (Marcelo Pissardini)
Also, honestly even with Discord losing, this is still a best case scenario since I don't think Discord can technically truly ever die. Bill might have been able to destroy his physical and spiritual form but, chaos will always exist and the ponies might be able to bring him back with enough chaos.
I love the trade off towards the end. Discord acts like they’re on par with each other. “We may be evenly matched Bill…” And then the response from Bill, showing he’s done playing around. “Oh, you think we’re EQUALS?”
I don't even watch MLP and yet hearing Fluttershy call out for her friend broke my heart. Mad respect for Discord. Dude lost but he got the last laugh.
I used to not like MLP FiM, but after watching it, I like it Anyways, after his action of saving fluttershy and equestria, i salute to him. What a chad
That last part amazingly showed the difference between Bill and Discord. Just like Death Battle said, Discord was never TRULY evil. He was just chaotic neutral, and it just so happened that it was dangerous for the citizens of Equestria. But Bill definitely IS a force of malevolence. Bill just uses chaos and destruction to further his own conquest, and even his own underlings aren't safe from his uncaring schemes. Having friends to fight for and sacrifice yourself for... is something Bill could NEVER understand. Heck, that's how the Pines beat him, after all.

This is the first time I've ever seen a combatant, sacrifice themselves to save others. I don't much care for MLP, but I gotta give mad respect to Discord. Bro's a hero in my book.
Because it's against the rules. All DB fighters are forced to cancel their morals and kill at any cost. But Discord is chaos incarnate and his 4th wall/rebirth/dimension travel/time travel abilities are superior enough for him to pull it off so I figure what the hell.
@@gmork1090I thought that rule only applied to situations where the character is a pacifist or has any reservations about killing their opponent I can't think of too many situations where the character's loved ones actually get in the way of the fight except when they're killed right off the bat to incite motivation
A small detail that a lot of people probably missed: from 15:13 onward you can tell that it wasn’t the same dimension because the background looks different, this is when discord saved equestria and transported bill back to his home
I think it's safe to say that Discord knew the whole time what he was doing and while he ultimately would have liked to finish Bill off, he also knew that he had to at least trap him first. This was one of those "victory by technicality" things because it is a fight to the death, but Bill's not pleased with winning.
Agreed. One of the sadder parts about Discord's sacrifice is that it didn't permanently stop Bill: he did successfully banish Bill away from Equestria, but it's been canonically proven that Bill can take all the time he needs to trick another mortal into opening a portal for him. When Ford stopped working on the portal, Bill just waited a few decades to trick Mabel into opening it (remember, Bill is over 1 trillion years old). Even IF Discord returns to life with knowledge of his opponent's powers (he probably won't, due to his spirit dying), the same applies to Bill once he finds his way back, which cancels out that advantage. At the same time, though, Discord was obviously low on options to handle Bill. Temporarily banishing Bill back to the Nightmare Realm was probably the smartest and best thing that Discord could've done with the sudden circumstances. If nothing else, he definitely bought time for his friends to hopefully prepare for Bill's return... and I'm sure that even a reality-warping demon like Bill would be better off avoiding a pissed off, vengeful version of _Fluttershy._
the thing is though, he was trapped at the start of the battle, they were never in canterlot, if you look at the portal at the end of the fight, you can see that no damage was done, and that the whole fight was in Discord's fake equestria
I really hope the creator of Gravity Falls and MLP see this. Especially the real life puppet show part. Thank you, Death Battle for brightening my day.
it's funny you say that, Alex Hirsch is actually a well stated fan of the show he first saw death battle about 7 years ago and has been loosely following them since
This death battle was insane! At first, I thought Discord won, but now I realize he sacrificed himself to banish Bill from Equestria, mirroring what Stan did in the show. Great job guys.
@@ericdalhoff3507 Rainbow Dash won against Starscream, and Pinkie Pie's fight ith Deadpool ended in a happy end for everyone so you can't count that as a win.
ONE YEAR AGO!!! Can’t believe how fast time has passed, this is still my favourite S10 Death Battle episode. Bill may have won the fight but Discord got the last laugh.
Funnily enough, this is technically canon since Alex himself says that his favorite ability of Bill is how he can show up in any show, even from creators he hasn’t met
@@xxJC22xx Arguably from two sources The first and one I found out recently is the fact that a playing card called "Dubious Intent" on a Discord Friend card from the MLP card game (Yes, actually, there is indeed a card game that looks like Magic: The Gathering) Discord mentions bring a friend with a very, very familiar description to the MLP world. Now, this could be seen as non canon, though with Discord's ability to break the fourth wall and it being an even bigger easter egg than other MLP easter eggs, I like to have some hope. However, my main source was from the fact that Alex recently stated on what his favorite ability Bill has is to show up in other shows, media, comics, etc. like Rick and Morty, The Simpsons, and *even shows where Alex doesn't know the creators.* I could be grasping at straws, and I'm trying not to, but the wording quite literally states that even outside of his direct influence, Alex has technically deemed that any depiction of Bill across media is canon. This also makes sense as there are literally an infinite amounts of him, though I like to think that's because it's like a hive-mind esque situation where his main body is on a higher plane of existence, one that probably was seen in the show since the reality Bill breaks into, our Gravity Falls, is actually confirmed to be the one out of an *infinite* where the Pines family makes it through the summer, the one variation out of literally every other parallel dimension with them to canonically live (which technically means that even the Stanford that successfully kept Bill "out" of his world, and all those Mabel variations, are likely dead or no longer able to return to the worlds they loved. That's a nice thought). Again, I could be really stretching it and grasping at straws, and trust me I'm really trying not to and be as unbiased as possible, but it seems to me that there is at least something to get out of all of it.
I like how they did effectively give the win to both of them. In that Bill can't cross dimensional barriers but Discord can, and that would normally decide a battle. But at the same time the rules of Death Battle explicitly require a fatality, so Battle Field Removal would not work. So the idea to have Bill kill Discord but Discord BFR him was very well thought out.
@@oscarcarbajal5135 Somebody actively participating in the fight still died though. It just wasn't one of the cartoon dogs because nobody really wanted to see them both kill each other.
I agree! It makes sense that Bill would go for the KILL but not think of some way to save himself trouble in the process. His priority was to defeat Discord while Discord's priorty was to save his friends, which he DID so in a way they both won
The last two Deathbattles seemed to have a more wholesome ending than usual. Between this and Silver Surfer vs Martian Manhunter, the characters have a more "real" feeling to them.
Love the voice actors in this. The part where Discord said "You don't recognize your own home." And the reality for Bill shatters was perfect. Discord won in my heart.
tbh I thought that WAS Discord winning before Wiz and Broomstick came back with the analysis. I thought Discord teleported back to Equestria before the portal closed to trap Bill
@@mindshuffler3332He's an evil bastard, and he essentially "lost" the same way he did in Gravity Falls: completely outwitted in a way he never saw coming by a character's love allowing them to gladly sacrifice themselves for the sake of their loved ones, something he could never understand because he is an entirely self serving creature. It's glorious.
I honestly love how Discord sacrificed himself to put Bill back where he belongs to save his friends. Well mainly Fluttershy but basically his friends. An excellent ending for a peak episode!
I love everything about the ending. It’s so unique. Bill wins but gets screwed over. The look of anger, the scream of frustration, and the victory pose that feels fresh out of a fighting game.
It took me a ridiculously long amount of time to realize exactly what was "Discord's" last move. For those of you just a confused as me, with his last reality bending effort discord tossed Bill back into his original dimension that he was trapped in at the beginning of 'Gravity Falls', before he was then immediately defeated. Forcing Bill to 'start all over' in his approach to consuming dimensions again.
It's actually a little more elaborate than that. It seems Discord constructed a fake copy of the Equestria world around Bill (like a box to keep him in) while moving him back into his prison dimension, so that Bill would not notice what was being done. He also presumably attacked Bill's mind despite knowing he would lose just so he could distract Bill long enough to move him.
@@rodrigofigueredo4422No, Bill ganó la pelea, no fue empate Pero fue Discord quien frustró el plan de Bill y salvó Equestria Básicamente ganó a la larga
I like that this is a clash of "good and evil" between two gods basically, Discord is casually defending his friends, but clearly knows he very well might die in the process, so he distracts, diverts, annoys, and eventually loses, sure, but manages to screw Bill over in a major way in the end anyway. A lot of series would just have for example, Bill win 5 seconds in, establishing his power by beating the hero's big gun, worfing, but this pays a lot more respect to both sides. Discord is weaker, but he's not weak, he didn't win, but his death wasn't for nothing either, that's why I love this story so much, more could learn from it's example.
Discord, technically, can reform according to their analysis. And I don't think he'd be able to return if he hadn't been destroyed, since he tricked Bill and lured him back home and then closed the way back. Discord had to lose to win, and couldn't win if he won since he'd be trapped. Which I think is probably intentional writing due to how backwards and insane everything is. As it stands, it might take a while, but eventually Discord gets everything he wants and Bill gets nothing with the way he played this battle.
Discord came fairly close to winning, actually. He correctly exploited Bill's one weakness, and Bill was starting to "glitch out" just like he was when he was dying in his own show.
It's not the discord was weaker (they're almost dead even. It's very hard to measure the unmeasurable) it's just he isn't as ruthless as Bill, which makes all the difference. In the end, Bill chose domination, while discord chose friendship. This was well written, and goes to show that a character can win a fight, but can still be defeated in the end.
Now remind me if I'm wrong haven't seen the episode in question for a long time but discord being the spirit of chaos didn't he say he could only dissapear if he was no longer chaotic. Cause last I remember he is so blatant and easy going is cause he always reforms as long as he is chaotic? It's why he never truly feared the elements of harmony or the crystal heart or anything really cause as long as he had his power even if he was destroyed he would reform in his chaos dimension. So even the cough destruction/(banishment to the ather) of Sombra was such a easy fix for him and how he didn't fear it beyond just not wanting to be stuck in place again.
The people working on this episode had to have been huge fans of both these shows. That is the only explaination for why the animation is so damn good. Like on top of a lot of the 2d stuff looking like it came straight out of their respective series, the background work is amazing as well and Bill VA does an amazing impression, sounds almost exactly like the official VA. Also some of the shots/idea are amazing, like Bill holding a soul with his shattered glass eye bleeding black blood is so good it should be in a official Gravity Falls episode. Like no joke, that is like top 5 Bill Cipher shots/scenes level good, it looks that official.
The animators are at their best when they're able to cut loose like this. Why restrain themselves when their animating two characters that have no limits?
This also probably by far the most debatable matchup in Death Battle, to the point of Death Battle even stating themselves that these two were almost even in every category Bill just had a very slight edge. I love how close this matchup was and I'm glad even though Discord lost he still went out with not only bang, but also a hero.
it's been established in the lore that Discord will always reform since he has to exist. He's a concept, you can't destroy a concept. He will come back, he's fine
@@SleepyWhistles I mean Bill Cipher has killed Time Baby who was the concept of time meaning Bill could have concept destroying capabilities. So I don't see Discord living after Bill killed him.
The ending to this fight was kind of genius. Since these two combatants are forced to fight until a conclusive death per the format of the show, Bill wins on that front. But the goals and motivations of these two characters exists outside of that format; Bill wanting to conquer the MLP universe and Discord wanting the safety of Fluttershy (and her friends, I guess). At the higher meta level, Discord beat Bill. It's an excellent sequel to the similarly meta previous death battle, where Silver Surfer and Martian Manhunter questioned why they had to fight to the death despite it being against their nature.
I swear if Death Battle started a show out of the characters that survived somehow realizing that all of it was just for entertainment and tried to find the boomstick and the other guys cartoon selves for revenge would be amazing AF and I'd love it. 😂❤
And discord can’t technically die either his body was destroyed and due too the death battle rules discord lost the battle but his body does regenerate but it takes a long time
This is the first Death Battle where I honestly think fans of the loser will enjoy it more than fans of the winner. (As a fan of both I’m the true winner). This is some of the best characterization and story telling DB has ever done.
Bill is one of my absolute favorite characters and the ending is one of the most perfect endings for him, getting screwed over by his opponent even though he won.
I do love them both, but I'm more attached to MLP and Discord overall. And while I do kinda disagree with the ending, even if I can't fault them for coming with the conclusion they made because this really is a close match and either of them can win, I could not be happier with the ending they gave the fight. I think this is one of the only DBs where both combatants win and lose at the exact same time and like, they did it so in tune with both of their characters. Because like let's be honest, who actually wants Bill to truly win? He's cool but he's completely evil going against someone completely neutral. If he had to win, I'm really happy it wasn't a complete victory. And that's not because I hate him or anything, he's objectively one of the greatest cartoon villains of all time, but it's because it's a fitting end to the fight and a nice conclusion to the conflict and story of it. Discord may have lost the fight, but he still won in a sense. Even if it had to be a sacrificial death, he saved Equestria and his friends, mainly Fluttershy, from Weirdmaganon and Bill and screwed him over again for who knows how long. Which is really in tune for his character by the end of the series. Basically, even if I don't agree with the winner of the fight, how can I be mad when the fight was everything I could have wanted and more with a perfect ending? This is absolutely one of the top 5 DBs ever.
I love all the different animation styles used in the fight and how pretty evenly matched they were. And that unexpected ending was so good. Bill may have won, but Discord definitely got the last laugh. His sacrifice for the magic of friendship will never be forgotten.
Bill is just the agent of chaos while discord is the definition of it. Yeah I could already see who won this one, it's the lord of chaos ✨ Edit: so bill actually won the battle, but discord won the war by saving Fluttershy and whole Equestria :D🌠 And it's also been established in the lore that Discord will always reform since he has to exist. He's a concept, you can't destroy a concept. He will always come back just we don't know how long
Honestly, their power scaling is pretty much *exactly* equal. The main deciding factor is Discord wasnt taking things seriously, while Bill was. Fantastic episode.
@@Caulikaibill is a 2d dream demon who loves causing Chaos. Discord is the living embodiment of Chaos. As along as Chasos exist he cant stay dead forever and will allways reform.
[SPOILERS FOR THE BATTLE] You know I find it incredible how despite how Bill killed Discord, Discord still had the last laugh and kind of won at the end, since he trapped him in his old dimension.
Yeah but bill will eventually break out and discord will reform and thus they’ll start an endless cycle one where bill wins the battle each time but discord keeps winning the war.
It makes sense though, its more like an infinite tie since Bill Will get reincarnated If he dies and discord Will Reform, tbh the battle is kinda pointless, but quite fun to watch non the less
Bill's personal win condition was to kill Discord and conquer Equestria. Discord's win condition was to protect his friends. Discord might've lost the death battle, but he won by his own rules.
Oh my god I just realized that when Discord showed up in the analysis section, he litterally says that he has no interest in fighting, but won't let Bill upstage him. In the end, he won by the parameters he set for himself.
It's also the only reason these two would fight. Discord would never kill, but he would challenge someone if they were a threat. Bill would never engage in a pointless duel, but he would destroy anyone who challenged his power. With Bill's motives in mind, and Discord's motives in mind, this seems to be the most likely outcome.
“Allegedly lost a drinking contest to Sideways from Transformers” Now THAT is an obscure bit of trivia. That tidbit came from Sideways in a relatively obscure corner of Transformers lore, not MLP. I’m impressed with the research here.
To answer everybody's question on whether or not Discord is dead or not, it says it in the episode. "As the spirit of chaos, Discord may one day reform, as Cosmos implied he cannot be destroyed forever due to embodying malice. However, their return would take time, and there is no proof Discord can return from spiritual destruction fast enough to resume the fight." This means that even with his spirit being destroyed, he can still come back. However, it's unclear how long it might take.
But, Bill destroyed him in a dimension where he shouldn't exist, Bill destroyed the second Dimension, what IS there for Discord to respawn from? Chances are, he's gone, especially with his soul restored... And even if he DOES return, chances are, it'll be as he once was, since everything that made him HIM, was just erased. Cipher doesn't take chances.
@@hypersaiyan7102 which is highly unlikely considering he can just wait for as long as he needs, he can manipulate even the most smartest of people, or even those who don’t want to.
Ok, but notice at the end, you can see the letter he wrote at the very beginning. Discord knew exactly what would happen and he still fought anyways. Truly, the most selfless chaotic being.
Honestly, this might be one of the most tragic episodes ever. Not just because of Discord's sacrifice... but also because it merely kicked the can down the road. Yes, Discord banished Bill from Equestria, but Gravity Falls' canon proved that Bill can take all the time he needs to trick someone into opening the rift again (just like when he tried to get Ford to do it, then Ford rebelled, and then Bill tricked Mabel into opening it decades later). So even if Discord eventually returns, so will Bill. Over and over, fighting again and again like a funny cartoon on loop.
It makes even more sense when you consider he attacks Bill's eye first. That's when he's taken him back to the Nightmare dimension when he knew Bill wasn't looking. Discord must have played dumb when Weirdmageddon began to enter into Bill's inner circle, as we can see they are taking with each other and Bill doesn't seem to mind his presence.
Badass move on Discord's part. He may have lost the battle, but he saved Fluttershy and Equestria as a whole! And, as the sidebar notes, he can regenerate from this kinda thing so...He'll be back. Bill may have won, but it gave him NOTHING.
I actually kinda love this sort of ending, and how they've been making story of these, like with silver surfer vs martian manhunter. Like i don't know mlp from anything, but they did incredibly right by Bill; both in how they portrayed him, and the fact that even with his absurd powers, it's in his mentality to win the battle, but lose sight of "the war".
The vocal inflections on both of them are done so well. Like neither of them are 1 to 1 of the original but there are so many lines that fit the vibe of them so much. Bill's laughs and the delivery of "Come on, man! What are you doing?!" And "Sure. I love checkers!" Felt so Bill. And the "All seeing god" bit is so good.
I love how the fight script played out in ways that give homage to both source material's inspirations. Bill is a true-to-form Lovecraftian Entity, you can't actually kill him, only seal him away at great sacrifice. Likewise, Discord is much like the old classic trickster gods, someone who can mess with higher beings and make clever plans, but is ultimately not all that strong and more out to cause mischief than take over things, making them more like a mid-boss for heroes and victims for villains alike.
He isn't exactly weak, he can do SO much more, just chooses not to cuz it's funny. However, Discord can always come back soon, just not very fast. Bill won a fight but at the cost of being sent back to his realm, while Discord literally can't fully die as long as Discord exists.
this death battle gets debunked, its rigged bill cipher is at best universal and discord multiversal+ i can type an essay on why and show their attack potency, lifting and striking strenght, speed ect.
I love how accurate each character is. The voice work is great, but the writing is on point too. Little things, like Discord opening the fight with a parody of Twilight's letters or Bill losing his temper when things aren't going his way, just made it more entertaining. Though I hoped Discord could pull it off in the end, it made sense that Bill would be the victor. But the reveal that Discord was sacrificing himself for everyone else, made him into a hero. And, in my opinion, the true winner of the fight.
@@aywhd3494 Plus, he won't stay dead forever. He'll be back and he can just time travel back to the moment he died, so he won't miss anything with Fluttershy.
This episode was just ridiculous, in a good way. It’s already an instant classic for me. My favourite part was definitely the weirdness bubbles. In Bill Cipher’s preview last week, I said that I hope that they would add those. I’m happy that they provided. Bill and Discord playing with each other like toys was just pure comedy gold. However, the Fluttershy part at the end was just so heartbreaking. I feel bad for her. She deserves the world.😢 But Discord sacrificing himself for her, her friends and Equestria proves he’s not just part goat. He’s 100% G.O.A.T! Stitch vs Rocket had a good run, but Bill vs Discord is now my new favourite for this season. Don’t mess with Disney characters. 10/10 episode. Really interested on what they do for Cole vs Alex, next time. This fight has been suggested for god knows how long, and hopefully like this episode, the wait will be worth it.
Yeah Discord showed Bill the power of Friendship. Bill doesn't understand why someone would go to such lengths for someone else without asking for anything in return. Really showing that Bill would be less of a monster if he had one friend.
Don't feel too bad for Fluttershy. They said in the post analysis text that Discord would eventually return, just not fast enough for it to count as a win.
15:53 This seals the 'Moral Win for Discord' right here for me. Bill's AFRAID. He knows those flames, and knows how they burn. Ol' Triangle Joe is all over the map in this one, but Discord never really wavered from 'Get this equilaterial idiot away from my peeps and have fun doing it', even to his death/erasure. Total Chad move, Discord. TOTAL Chad.
Until Bill had enough of that Dragon Horse inbred and was "You really think this same shtick gonna work on me twice you goofy animamorphic Q amateur? Get the heck outta my mind!". Even though Discord saved his friends in the end what's really stopping Bill from invading Equestria again if he feels like it?
@@jeremysans1463If Bill could easily get back to Equestria, he wouldn’t have been freaking out and threw his temper tantrum at the end there. Hence why he was desperate to make a deal with one of the viewers watching.
@@NColt-ov9pbIDK enough about MLP, but it sounds like Discord also exists as long as he's chaotic and creates chaos, and that he's the environment of chaos. So wouldn't he still exist even if his physical& soul forms are destroyed because chaos still exists? @@joseguadalupemartineztorre9702 In fiction (mythologies included), when nigh omnipotents (gods) loses against another, usually they're not just killed. They're essence is completely erased. Immortality may only apply to mortal beings that are restricted to mortal means. Not by other nigh omnipotent beings that could do plot based attacks on the fly. These types of fights are honestly more of a heated argument between two people than actual fighting and their abilities behind them. It's a battle of wills.
I just realized this song fits both sides too. It sounds like a song that would be in MLP and it has that eerie cryptic sound and backwards message like in Gravity Falls
Y'know, aside from the win-in-spirit that Discord got, he came pretty close to ACTUALLY winning the fight too. Going into Bill's mind, lighting his dreamscape on fire and distracting him with a close-up battle long enough for it to burn probably would have worked if the Stans' plan also worked. If only Discord were lethal enough and good enough at fighting to actually hold his own once he was in Bill's domain, even for just a little longer. It doesn't take long for Bill to die when trapped inside a mind that's falling apart, and the battle showing his form glitching seems to suggest he was taking heavy damage. So aside from just being a death battle where the loser sort of won in their own way, this battle also acknowledges a good way Discord really COULD have won the fight. You don't get that often out of Death Battle, usually the loser's final attack or last ditch effort ends up being something the winner has an easy answer to which is why it doesn't work. But this? Bill's only way to defend against Discord going in his head and lighting it on fire was to get rid of him, and fast. Granted Bill can definitely do that, especially when the fight is taken to his own head, but still it's a better last ditch effort than most combatants get. I just think it's cool to see the loser of a death battle having a plan that actually would have worked if not for the other guy just... winning the fight before it could. This episode gave mad respect to Discord, hope we see more of that kind of respect to losers in the future.
You missed one critical detail on why Discord lost. When doing a fight at this emmense of a level, the fight must be taken seriously. In gravity falls, Bill showed he is perfect at balancing effort when he is aware of a threat, something Discords lack of responsibility cost him as he alerted Bill that he is a threat immediately and as Death battle said, Discord could have killed him and that's what cost him the victory, the fact he could, damned him to fail. Just as time baby in gravity falls died nigh instantly to Bill, Discord wouldn't make it unless he hidden his capabilities, something hard to do against a quiet litterl all seeing god. Much more challenging with how careless Discord is in comparison.
Honestly I'm not too sure getting rid of Discord would stop the mindfire once it's started. Bill won because he would prevent Discord from entering his mind in the first place by taking him as seriously as Time Baby, but that wouldn't make for a great animation so they had to animate this plan failing at the last stage rather than be prevented altogether.
@@DvirPick Well it's Bill's own mind, so he could probably just will the fire to stop whenever he wants, assuming Discord isn't in there to will it to keep going. The thing that killed him in Stan's mind was that it WASN'T his mind and he couldn't completely control it, or stop it from being destroyed from the outside. But if it's Bill's own mind in question, it seems pretty likely that he'd need to be distracted from putting the fire out. Also, just to defend the opposition a little, Discord seems a bit harder to kill than Time Baby; even the analysis concluded he's practically dead even with Bill in power level. So he probably wouldn't get 1shot even if Bill is taking him seriously from frame 1.
That's... deep.
Discord lost the battle but won the war and respect.
Finally somebody else points this out! The only way to defeat Bill is to do the one thing he can't comprehend: Be selfless.
Also luring him somewhere by distracting him with something he wants, or playing on his ego. He was too busy enjoying his fight with Discord (especially inside his mind) that he didn't even notice he wasn't in Equestria

@@markmolayal9402 I love how he said he's an all seeing god just moment before getting trapped in that dimension (I forgot it's name)
My favorite thing I haven’t seen anyone mention yet is that in the portal to Equestria, you can see a letter on the ground, meaning that the letter he wrote at the beginning of the fight was a farewell note to Fluttershy and the others, he always knew that he might not be able to stick around to say goodbye so he did it the only way he could
With enough chaos he can recreate his soul and physical body, he has a plan to defeat bill knowing there was no chance to destroy bill
The quivering in Fluttershy's voice as she's saying Discord's name with the note on the ground really hit home.
Did a great job with this one!!

Pretty standard line, I don’t know why are you going crazy about it?
I adore how their deaths, Bill’s in his own show and Discord’s in this death battle, show their true natures. Discord died a noble death because he’d learned to care more about the world and Fluttershy than he did about himself. Meanwhile, Bill died begging and desperately trying to make a deal. He only cared about himself, so when he died, there was no solice. Only the terror of perishing after existing for over a trillion years. He went out kicking and screaming with no dignity.

OH MY GOD
He did he used what magic he had left to trap bill in a different dimension
I think that it rather was that he was slowly "fixing" the place before trapping Bill. First you can see the ponies floating without being statues, then the bubbles and mosnters are gone and finally he teleports Bill to his dimention.
All of that and the way he hugs the yellow pony's flag makes me feel that Discord alredy knew from the start that he wouldn't beat Bill so he just distracted him long enough to repair all the chaos and then trap him

Discord is the TRUE winner in our book.
They're upped their quality all around in multiple ways. Martian Manhunter vs Silver Surfer was top tier too!
That and the fact that Discord will eventually reconstitute, and he banished Bill from Equiestria in the process, thus saving everyone, and leaving Bill stranded in a burnt down husk of a dimension means that by all means Discord won the war here.

Funnily enough, this is technically canon since Alex himself says that his favorite ability of Bill is how he can show up in any show, even from creators he hasn’t met
Really? Where from?
@@xxJC22xx Arguably from two sources
The first and one I found out recently is the fact that a playing card called "Dubious Intent" on a Discord Friend card from the MLP card game (Yes, actually, there is indeed a card game that looks like Magic: The Gathering) Discord mentions bring a friend with a very, very familiar description to the MLP world.

This wasn't a reference to Book Of Bill, since this predates it by a bit
It's awesome that they predicted that
It took me a ridiculously long amount of time to realize exactly what was "Discord's" last move. For those of you just a confused as me, with his last reality bending effort discord tossed Bill back into his original dimension that he was trapped in at the beginning of 'Gravity Falls', before he was then immediately defeated. Forcing Bill to 'start all over' in his approach to consuming dimensions again.
I actually figured that out moment he pull it off and the way he behave and acted indicated that this is his plan from the beginning
Thank you for explaining that because I never watched either show lol
It's actually a little more elaborate than that. It seems Discord constructed a fake copy of the Equestria world around Bill (like a box to keep him in) while moving him back into his prison dimension, so that Bill would not notice what was being done. He also presumably attacked Bill's mind despite knowing he would lose just so he could distract Bill long enough to move him.

Discord lost the battle but won the war, and because of his conceptual existence, he will go back to his friends... er... friends of a friend.
It honestly broke my heart to see Fluttershy call out for Discord at the end.
Bill may have won the battle, but at least Discord saved his friends.

16:22 fun fact!: the black liquid is actually ichor aka blood of gods!

Facts.

Discord is the living embodiment of Chaos. As along as Chasos exist he cant stay dead forever and will allways reform.
This is def going in the top 10 death battles of all time. Even if you disagree with the winner the effort put into this is godly.
yeah i really do love all the effort put into these videos. But especially this one yeah.
This might be the first time I disagree with the verdict but still love the episode regardless.
Yeah. I don't agree with the verdict but the fight was so well done that it's still my absolute favorite this season.
This has to be the best animated fight I've seen from them.
I’m not an MLP fan but seeing Fluttershy call out Discord that hit me hard and I just wanted to give her a hug.
Me too.
i never liked the show but discord was my favourite character
even though i never knew his name as a kid
Can't say I blame you.
At least on the brightside, he left her a note on how to bring him back to life.

[SPOILERS FOR THE BATTLE] You know I find it incredible how despite how Bill killed Discord, Discord still had the last laugh and kind of won at the end, since he trapped him in his old dimension.
That's true until Bill finds someone desperate enough to make a deal.
And Discord ensured his own Revival by setting his Universe back to normal!
Yeah but bill will eventually break out and discord will reform and thus they’ll start an endless cycle one where bill wins the battle each time but discord keeps winning the war.
The ultimate sacrifice.
Discord started as a villain and lived long enough to become the hero.
Friends of a Friend.
Discord die protecting his friends, an honorable sacrifice in my opinion
Should make a statue in his honor
It's also the only reason these two would fight. Discord would never kill, but he would challenge someone if they were a threat. Bill would never engage in a pointless duel, but he would destroy anyone who challenged his power. With Bill's motives in mind, and Discord's motives in mind, this seems to be the most likely outcome.
So the only person who really lost was Bill Cipher
I love checkers “pulls out a knight from chess” 15:34
God I love these kind of death battles!
The puppet segment was a work of art.
Especially considering that there was a Gravity Falls episode involving Bill Cipher and puppets.
I like how even if bill technically won, discord really screwed him over as much as possible
allah solos bill cipher
Discord lost the battle, but won the war.
That's what makes this match up so chaotic, it really inversed what a victory and loss was suppose to be.
That is in character for Discord.

“Allegedly lost a drinking contest to Sideways from Transformers”
Now THAT is an obscure bit of trivia. That tidbit came from Sideways in a relatively obscure corner of Transformers lore, not MLP. I’m impressed with the research here.
Where did they come form
I'm pretty sure they found that while researching Megatron/Unicron
The thing is, there was actually a Transformers/MLP crossover comic

I think "I know how you die" goes hard
To answer everybody's question on whether or not Discord is dead or not, it says it in the episode. "As the spirit of chaos, Discord may one day reform, as Cosmos implied he cannot be destroyed forever due to embodying malice. However, their return would take time, and there is no proof Discord can return from spiritual destruction fast enough to resume the fight." This means that even with his spirit being destroyed, he can still come back. However, it's unclear how long it might take.
Given how easy he time travels as well, he will probably be crashing his own funeral in a week or so
Thats good to hear.
Given the episode's fanbases, I assume it wouldn't take long
But, Bill destroyed him in a dimension where he shouldn't exist, Bill destroyed the second Dimension, what IS there for Discord to respawn from? Chances are, he's gone, especially with his soul restored... And even if he DOES return, chances are, it'll be as he once was, since everything that made him HIM, was just erased. Cipher doesn't take chances.
Even then it's just the ultimate stalemate. Bill could always come back as well as discord but regardless of alll that the battle was just incredible
Even though Discord lost, he still succeeded in sealing away Bill from invading other dimensions.
Discord is like: I'm gonna do what they call a Pro Gamer Move.
Bill Cipher may have killed Discord, but Discord had the last laugh.
He didn’t “seal” away Bill from invading other dimensions though, Bill can still escape if he’s able to make a deal with someone.
@@Okus477 But as long as no one makes a deal with Bill, he won’t escape.
@@hypersaiyan7102 which is highly unlikely considering he can just wait for as long as he needs, he can manipulate even the most smartest of people, or even those who don’t want to.
@@hypersaiyan7102*me casually making a deal with bill.*
@@corneliusmaze-eye2459Or when they reached the portal after the puppet show part, maybe discord teleported him in this fake place
I'm glad we didn't get to see exactly what Discord wrote on that note, or else **I'd** be the one KO'd this episode.
@@mrreyes5004 But it gives Equestria time to prepare, assuming Discord in his letter provided some warning about his possible and eventual return.

“Sure I love checkers”
*proceeds to play 5 different games, none of which are checkers*
It shows that Death Battle really did made those 2 characters justice.
A battle lost with a purpose is better than a victory with no reward
@@tristancummings5925Eh seeing as he can time travel, he can come back instantly for everyone else. For him a long time would have passed.
this death battle gets debunked, its rigged bill cipher is at best universal and discord multiversal+ i can type an essay on why and show their attack potency, lifting and striking strenght, speed ect.
This is appropriately the most insane and unhinged Death Battle episode.
Bill won the battle but discord won the war
And the letter he wrote at the start of the fight was right there with the ponies.

No doubt that it will be a good fight, but I just can't see Mercer losing that one. It feels like such a stomp match.
Don't feel too bad for Fluttershy. They said in the post analysis text that Discord would eventually return, just not fast enough for it to count as a win.
"Don't mess with Disney characters"?? Discord ain't Disney.
@PeacePetal Bill is. I think he was referring to Bill still managing to win.
15:53
This seals the 'Moral Win for Discord' right here for me.

Also, since he gets stronger the more chaotic he is, wouldn't he just take Bill to a different dimension, away from the Tear?
@@joseguadalupemartineztorre9702 In fiction (mythologies included), when nigh omnipotents (gods) loses against another, usually they're not just killed. They're essence is completely erased. These types of fights are honestly more of a heated argument between two people than actual fighting and their abilities behind them. It's a battle of wills.

I actually didn’t notice this until I listened to Brandon’s song in its own. 😮😊
I just realized this song fits both sides too. It sounds like a song that would be in MLP and it has that eerie cryptic sound and backwards message like in Gravity Falls
Whatever you paid the animators for this fight, it's not enough. You've really outdone yourselves this time.
In other words, if discord wasn't such a show off, he might have earned a full W
I think a key part of winning in spirit is still having a spirit by the end of it
Honestly I'm not too sure getting rid of Discord would stop the mindfire once it's started.
So he probably wouldn't get 1shot even if Bill is taking him seriously from frame 1.
after reading the book of bill, this is uh… a little more clear of a victory
