The PERFECT Music Making Setup!?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 12 лип 2024
- Hey friends,
In this video I want to give you a simple 5 step guide on how you can find the optimal music making setup for your personal needs. No matter where you are in your musical journey I think it is key to actually ask yourself what you want to achieve with your craft and once you are clear on that, define what gear you really need to get there. The gear options out there are endless and I hope this video helps you to get a clearer picture to in the end define what you actually really need for your musical vision (instead of just GASing around without a clear plan 🫠).
I hope you enjoy the video and can take something away from it - any questions feel free to drop me a comment below!
Cheers and stay creative,
Miles

After few years with HW only setup, i am now moving back to iPad only setup (it was my setup since 2010 till 2020 until i discovered Elektron boxes :)) .. now mostly running Drambo - finally discovered it's modular beauty combined with classic Elektron-alike sequencer approach. Looks like this baby, with proper midi controller (still didn't decided which one is best for me) will be for some time my perfect setup, but also thinking about combining it with Digitone, i also love Digitone for it's immediacy, super quality sound as improvisation device for exploring new sounds.
Following your channel for long time, and it's interesting to observe how long way you went from Digitone only sets :-) Also quality of your channel grows, i was always too lazy to push my channel just from random jams and short videos into something more coherent, you have my big respect !
Hey Ray, that sounds like a super interesting setup too. I've never owned an iPad but also sometimes just make music/create sounds in Ableton on my MacBook. Drambo looks really cool, reminds me a little bit of Reactor from NI. Can imagine it being a lot of fun combining it with the Digitone. :)
And thanks also for being part of this journey and the community for such a long time. It also feels like a long way and this year has been the biggest change for me with moving from DAWless to hybrid and also trying lots of new video formats. A year of exploration so to say. :) Hope you are doing well and keep the random jams coming - in the end it is all about the fun!
love it less is more less is MORE
Cheers Xopa - yeah that's really about it. Limitations sparkle creativity so find a setup that works for you, inspires you and only use the tools that you really need.
You are always bringing relevant insights and inputs M. I've been steady at sticking to the "less is more" approach since I started AC. So far I'm happy with the direct and minimal approach of the duo Digitakt + Circuit Tracks. But hybrids surely has a lot to offer. It's always super inspiring to witness your workflow. Thanks for taking time to share your thoughts with us. I'll be looking forward to have you soon over here in Cph for a gig and hangout! - Take good care of you mate. 💜
"less is more" is absolutely deeply true philosophy ..always when my HW setups starts grow more, i end in phase that i just sell most of it and keep just very basic core .. and it ALWAYS again sparks my creativity ..
Hey G and Ray, thanks for stopping by and bringing up some great points! I 100% agree to the "less is more" approach. This is also why I want to keep my hybrid setup as compact as possible: On the one side to keep it portable but on the other side of course to also be more creative with the things I do. I often start my songs with just one synth (mostly Digitone, Sub 25 or an internal Ableton synth) and see how much I can get out of this. Then I start to build from there and it works really really good. So having a basic core that sets you clear boundaries in terms of what you can do might seem limiting at first sight but for me it's these limitations that spark creativity.
Your videos keep getting more and more clean and professional, great stuff M! Really good advice for beginners or experienced people who need to relook things!
Ahh thank you so much buddy! Means a lot as I actually did a lot of editing to this one and also like how it turned out. :) Hope you are well, regular Massive Radio listener here. What you guys put together there is awesome! 🙏🏻💚
Cooler Videoaufbau 🫶🏼
Danke Nu ♥️
Great video as always! Thanks for that.
Thanks for watching Kobi! Happy to hear that you dig it.
Thanks for the video! Definitely food for thought. Do you still use the Digitakt for percussion or have you moved that all to the Push/Ableton
Hey BoBoDad, I still use it for percussion but not as part of the setup anymore. So sometimes I grab the Digitakt and create percussion loops on it and then record those into Ableton. For my live setup the Digitakt was the device I could most easily replace by Ableton and this is why I went for this approach. It works pretty good for me :)
@@MilesKvndra Makes sense. I'm still doing a lot of sequencing from the Digitakt to my other synths. I know I can use the Push and Live to accomplish similar results but the elektron sequencer is just so flexible. ATM I'm sequencing the Digitone and my Hydrasynth from Live and everything else from the DT. I'm not performing live so cutting down on the number of devices isn't so critical. I really like your current setup though, it shows what can be done with a hybrid layout. I think a lot of people believe that DAWless is some kind of holy grail but a PC and Live is just another piece of music electronics. Unless I'm trying to finish a track, I treat Live as an audio and MIDI router and the Push as a mixer/clip launcher.
@@bo-bodad8253 exactly that. Like you said I just made another piece of equipment the brain of my setup but it could have also been the Octatrack or something else. For me Live just made sense because I’ve used it extensively in the past and knew my way around it quite well. But your setup sounds very interesting too! And you’re right about the Elektron sequencer, it’s really powerful and I love it! 💚
Great overview as always! Even though I moved much more towards a DAW focused workflow, I learned a lot earlier on from more hybrid and DAWless setups and can still use those workflows for songwriting and sound design exploration. I think your vid will really help a lot of people starting out or who might be at a fork in the road :D
Thanks so much Ryan! Appreciate the detailed feedback and really hope it does help people to get a clearer understanding of where they want to go with their setups. I really find your setup inspiring and with the guitar in the DJ booth one could argue that it is a hybrid setup haha. Keep up the great work and hope to catch you live soon!
Great thoughts, will you upgrade to Push 3 or is it not ready for you yet?
Thank you! I definitely will very soon :)
