For the people who didn't really understand the situation in the video, it's showing a situation of a poor family on Chinese New Year. In Chinese New Year, especially the new year's eve, it's a tradition for the family to eat a proper kind of food, as the dishes show so many symbolism; usually about luck. The kid in this video came from a poor family, so he tried to make the New Year Eve special for him and his dad by exchanging the things that he made (which resembles some of the decorations that are often used in Chinese New Year) for said proper kind of food and also a camera (probably to take a picture of the family as this is also often done in modern Chinese new Year). Not really sure about the laptop, but I guess that it might be to add some music/enhance the Chinese New Year vibe in his house (lion and dragon dance, traditional Chinese music with drums etc). He probably didn't quiet understand that the people whom he was taking money from didn't actually notice that he "stole" their things and foods, but they finally realize that he was only trying to make his dad feel happy and special, especially in the New Year Eve (as it's also a tradition to respect your elders at the celebration). I know that some of you already understand what the video is trying to convey, but I also know that not all people, especially the non-Chinese ones understand that such culture exists, especially in the correlation of the video. Sorry for the long comment, and sorry if my English isn't perfect. Edit: A few grammatical mistakes and add more description to make it clearer. Can't believe I've made this comment 4 years ago lmao.
+Chief Akatosh Thank you for taking the time to write such a wonderful explanation, much appreciated as it put the video into perspective for me. BTW you're English is very good.
Thanks for that explanation. I kinda got the movie even from a Western perspective. As I saw it... First the boy understood his father had to work without stopping just to keep them alive. The kid worked really hard creating amazing gifts with everything he had. He exchanged those gifts for items that people pretty much threw away, and did it for love of his father and the need for a joyous festival. He stole nothing. He gave everything he had for items he understood others (through inattention) were giving. His motive was to give even more for his father. What I really liked was the father saw the gifts the son had given and got it instantly. The greatest line a father could have in a situation like this "After we eat, then go and say sorry to Uncles and Aunties and two young ladies". That was then reinforced by the neighbours bringing food and understanding (implied) that the gift they had received was more valuable than what they lost. It's a giving story. Thank you.
I love this 😍😭 tears running down my face, cos I can feel the reason why the little boys did that 💔 aw Chinese people are wonderful 🙏🏾 help each other when needed 💓 and love one another no matter what the situation is💯
As a Malaysian, I must say there is a part that's not quite accurate, if my father sees a mob outside our house and they are accusing me of committing theft, my father will just march in, whip out a cane or anything that can used as a weapon, beat the living crap out of me and then apologise to the angry mob :")
I wonder if the video is correctly depicting a sort of Chinese tradition or merely trying to make money showing irrelevant culture.I am not trying to criticise but just showing my thoughts or asserting. It's good to note the kind behaviour of people but we can barely find kind people nowadays. Selfishness has seized people like a smoker struggling to grab hold of cigars. Overall I would like to rate the video 3 out of 5 stars.
Weilord Bubblebath I agree with you. This is never the best way of educating a child. However, I think the villagers are nice people and understand the boy's motivations (if you don't, the description and the comment from Chief Akatosh above will really help). They understand how horrible it would be for the boy to not have the ability of celebrating the most significant festival of the year with his father, and thus decided to help. So it is still somewhat understandable once you know about the background.
I was scrolling in the comments and read that many people cried and I was like: Why?! Why?! Its cute. not sad. Then I finished the video and I'm just here so ashamed, I cried so much...
Please stop with these videos they are very distracting! But to be serious, thank you for the entertainment, these videos are so inspirational and very moving. Such a happy ending, the boy played a fantastic part, what a great young actor, he had me hoping the best for him throughout the video.

Thank you for your explanation. It clarified things for me. I'm Chinese but grew up in the US so I lost some sense of my own culture.

We can all learn from this short story. Caring is giving.
