I visited Conway Stewart this morning to collect my Vanwall with a medium stub. I saw it at the London Pen Show at a good discount. There is a bit of a story about this purchase that includes a bit of pickpocketing ! Anyway what a lovely group of people at Emsworth and I now have a lovely pen, or will have when my partner, the pickpocket, gives it to me for my 75th birthday. I did mention to them how much I enjoy your channel and books too.
Ah, now I'm jealous, Tony. I couldn't get to the pen show (in fact I've never been to one!), and I've never seen the new building in Emsworth. One day I'll see if I can make a video down there - that would be fun! I hope your pickpocket feels the shame and returns the stolen article suitably wrapped very soon! Have a great one!
I always lusted after the original Winston when it was released, specifically the lever version with at least a broad or stub nib - couldn't afford it when released.
Thanks for creating and posting this video. Looking at various pens on a screen is nice but seeing them presented together in hand is so much more helpful.
Glad it was helpful! I did feel that comparing the three together was the best way to present them. One day I'll have to ask Conway Stewart if I can borrow a Churchill too, and review the four together!
Like, you, I discovered my green Winston unscrewed soon after I bought it, (about 10 years ago), and that is how I fill it. So much easier than the fiddly brass knob on its own.
Very informative video, like the fact that the Conway Stewart fountain pens are back in the picture. I would choose the Winston style pen, have a Winston in classic green myself and just love it. The new detection club pen seems to be based on te Lady Churchill i think. The Indiana Jones is a bit small for me. Hope to see more video's of fountain pen teviews in the future.
I think that the Detection Club pen is actually based on the Wordsworth, which I think is a fair bit chunkier than the Lady Churchill - but not absolutely certain. I do love the Winston style, though.
Watching your videos introduced me to Conway Stewart. I have a black lever fill Churchill in EF that is light and great for longer writing. The other is a Churchill Heritage the 1st of the second set in F. It is wonderful also, the heft surprised me when comparing to the lever fill. It is well balanced and writes well. They are used and inked up most of the time. Thank you for the videos.
My pleasure. Yes, I think the lever has no sleeve inside, which makes it that much lighter. My own is that kind of weight, too. Much though I do love it, I think I prefer a heavier pen for extended writing, which is why I have the Drake - lovely, weighty pen with excellent balance.
I have the Indiana Jones pen with a fine nib. Yes, I do indeed use it as an everyday carry pen. I also have a Churchill with a lever fill, so there isn't any brass giving heavy weight to it. I simply adore lever fill pens, so if Conway Stewart releases another one, I'm interested. Your dogs are so cute. 🥰🐶🐕
Hi, Laura, I'm with you on lever fills. They do have that niggle that you can never tell how much ink there is inside, but I love the quick fill and ease of restoring the reservoir. I do rather wish my Indiana Jones had a fine nib, too - mine's a broad, which does restrict it's use for general note-taking - many daily carry notebooks don't take kindly to that much ink, and it also means I run out that bit faster! Very glad to hear you like the clips of the two monsters !
Hi Michael. I have an Indiana Jones model, and I would prefer the Detection model in size and heft. Looking forward to seeing them on sale! I have a Winston and really enjoy writing with it. Thanks for sharing!
That's really good to hear. I have to admit, I really love the weight and balance of this. With luck it'll be available in the next week or two, so keep your eyes on this channel for news about it!
I’m afraid I blame you for developing a Conway Stewart addiction. I have the Indy pen and it really is the perfect shirt pocket pen. And since I’m an archaeologist, it’s a bit of an inside joke. Then I got a very good deal on the Alan Turing pen-a beautiful pen with its yellow finials. And I really appreciate the added heft when writing at home. Trying to avoid buying another at least until next year! Love the videos and thanks for sharing your dogs behaving badly-hilarious!
Thanks for that, James - and apologies for causing the decline of your wallet! I'm jealous of your Turing pen. I loved that when CS let me try it out for a video. However, all good pens have to go back to their true owners and sadly I can't afford any just now. I agree with you, though, the Indy is a fabulous little pen, ideal in terms of size for a note-taking everyday pen. And the clip works well - I'm always anxious about pens where the clip isn't strong enough. I've lost a couple that way, with the pen slipping unnoticed from my pocket! Happily the two dogs are fast asleep just now. I have a video conference coming up, and I don't want the Ridgeback sitting beside me again and making the blasted chair collapse while I'm talking! Again, that is. It's happened twice already! Happy writing!
We’re talking about pen weight as if we don’t all have a massive Chinese pocket tyrant (smart phone) in our pocket or hand bag. Who are we trying to kid?

Roll on November! Hope Santa sees this and i find one under my tree on the 25th!
I hope so! Detection Club pen will be coming available very soon, I think!
A great deal about the size of these three pens, but they are pens, its how they write which is the most import thing Michael!
Absolutely. Trouble is, when all write really well, how else do you come down to your choice? Size, weight, balance etc are all relevant.
We’re talking about pen weight as if we don’t all have a massive Chinese pocket tyrant (smart phone) in our pocket or hand bag.
Who are we trying to kid?
Very true - but then, I wouldn't keep my phone in my shirt pocket. The damn thing's far too heavy!
