In Australia we are not allowed to carry a gun or a knife. I was walking with my dog in the forest, a guy parked across the track to slow me down, my dog only 18 months old, a whippet, growled and lunged at him three times, snapping at him when he moved towards me. To this day I think I owe her my life. I am only just under 5 ft, and a very small frame. I would love to walk in the forest, but I’m too scared to now. People suck, you never know who is watching you . I love your advice thank you

Such a shame to miss out on nature because of shitty people though, do you have the home space for a bigger dog that will guard you better? A well trained pit bull wont let a creep near you or if you prefer something more sensitive that will also guard you very well I suggest a Rhodesian Ridgeback or two, my wife runs solo in the countryside here in France with our RR’s as well as pepper spray with no issues. That or find buddies to hike with. I hope you get back to nature soon especially during these weird times where nature is so essential.

Second is my walkabout. I'm am older guy. Im not a cripple, but I have found a solid oak walking stick with good grain and a ball handle helps me negotiate uneven ground. It has on occasion, persuaded troublesome dogs to go elsewhere. I have trained with sticks since I was a kid in the Philipines back in the 70s.
Third, is my knife. If all else has failed, I'm cornered , and imminent bodily injury or death, here we go.

I agree with Steve's comments below. I would add the "self defense" cane such as a Canemaster cane with appropriate training. I would list "tools' as follows:
    1. firearm
    2. Appropriate cane with training
    3. Knife(s)
    4. pepper spray-which I don't carry but use to when cycling-great on dogs!
It may take 2 seconds to draw from concealment and fire or employ a knife. I got the hickory cane in my hand and can "whack" someone in less than a second. If I still need a firearm this gives me time to get it operating. I'm old and beat-up and can use the cane without using deadly force or with deadly force as necessary. Even if "justified" in using deadly force it doesn't mean you should-situational dependent. I have become a strong believer in the power of the cane with proper training and appropriate cane. I can't walk about with a gun or knife in my hand without getting shot or arrested. I carry the cane everywhere.

    In UK:
    1) We're not allowed to carry a gun in public and police have spent the last few years removing lawfully owned guns from innocent people on the most tedious and frivolous of excuses (and the cost of appealing in court is designed to be ludicrously high to ensure most people can't afford to);
    2) We're not allowed to carry a fixed blade knife, only a folding knife that has no ability to lock and the blade must be under 3";
    3) Even pepper spray is illegal for us to carry unless you can show "good reason."
It gets worse though because if we carry ANYTHING whatsoever for self defense, or even suggest to police we might use something to defend ourselves, it immediately becomes an "offensive weapon", gets confiscated, and perhaps leads to jail time... even if never used in self defense: we're not even allowed to think about defending ourselves.
Meanwhile we have hundreds of fighting age young men illegally entering our country daily and being housed amongst us. It only takes a few of them to run wild with kitchen knives stolen from local shops, perhaps on a coded signal in a coordinated "terrorist" attack, and hundreds even thousands of innocent lives could be lost in a matter of minutes. And then our government has an excuse to impose a police state.
Hang on to your weapons. Don't lose your ability, even right, to defend yourself like people in UK stupidly have.

My three: pocket carry Kahr PM40 w/spare mag (can be swapped for IWB G19 if need be), fixed 3.5" drop-point blade, and my favorite, a walking stick. Cane for town, tall staff for woods. It's a multipurpose tool and weapon, already in hand, that can be dialed up or down in force depending on need, unlike a gun or knife. Like a low-tech Star Trek phaser, it goes from stun to kill. Ankle-nipper chihuahuas or chows can be rapped on the nose to get their attention. Growling mutts can be held away with the tip. 4-legged or 2-legged attackers can get full-power swings to drive off, disable, or neutralize, especially in defending against surprise attacks before unholstering #1.

As a UK based bodyguard I was limited, but not prohibited per se, of being armed. So I would carry a hardened tactical flashlight. And a Kevlar umbrella. Both are legally as one is a tool and the other very useful here in a rainy country. Both are also tools of the job too. The top one of course is training with them and in self defence. But the most important was research and investigation as knowing all the exits, alternative routes and the area is always the best way of self preservation.

Here in Queensland Australia we’re not allowed to carry any type of knife without a lawful reason. An example of that would be camping, fishing or the type of occupation that requires utility cutting.
I’ve trained in martial arts from an early age and stay physically active. Luckily I haven’t encountered a physical threat in years as we live in a relatively safe area. In saying that however, I do still carry an Olight Warrior Mini 2 flashlight. The size and weight fit perfectly in my hand along with 2 modes of actuation (one being a tail switch that provides instant turbo mode). Those belly bands are completely secure especially for a smaller gun, but I even carried a Glock 19 that way for years. Belly bands are not flimsy, the pockets are very stiff and tight, and I only use the kind that have a strap that keeps it from ever wiggling free or falling out if I lean forward, etcetera.

I run security at a local Church, and I have encountered people (men) who have broken into our Sunday School wing at night and either fell asleep (Drugs or Alcohol Impaired) and they fall asleep in a hidden closet and are discovered by kids or women. Normally the way I approach that problem is to first ask several other men who are First Responders to calmly confront the intruder/burglar with me, first, I call the Sheriff, I ask them not to run code and just keep a low profile, that way others in church will not be panicked, I have noticed that it pays to be very calm and encourage the intruder to tell us what drugs he might have been on, commonly now it is Fentenal in the past it might have been Meth etc. I never want to be seriously confrontational nor do I try to tackle them or strike out in anger even if they talk a big fight, it pays to keep cool and avoid escalating to an armed response. However, if it looks like someone has intent to hurt another, I have a Glock 27 mini .40 and I was trained by the Navy during Vietnam, Sappers were what we feared because they used the element of surprise. The best defense is a locked metal door, most tragic shootings and attacks can be repelled with a barrier between those we wish to protect and the bad guys. My advice is "do not overreact" !

Over the past year, walking my dog around my neighborhood has become a little more sketchy than it ever has been. Lots of cars that come in from out of town on our road and in the area where we live right by a school. Many vehicles have slowed down and drove around the block and seemed to follow me in some circumstances. I always got my phone out visibly and even during the day when this car followed me around 4 different directions on our walk at 10AM… I always bring my phone out and visibly show I am taking pictures or calling someone while not losing sight of their vehicle.
I’ve been uneasy lately and worry as my dog is a husky- if you know anything of huskies, they are no guard dog. She is the biggest baby and Ik I can’t think she would be able to protect me or attack if needed.

One thing I have been taught in self defense is be sure your knife is easily available to your nondominant hand. God forbid you have to pull your gun and for some reason some one grabs it, you want your knife accessible to your weak hand so you can hold the gun and defend yourself with the knife. Great video, those are the same three that I carry. In this state, the gun and even knife is your absolute last resort as they are a guaranteed prison sentence.

I carry a Colibri lighter, a dual flame with single action ignition. I train with it so that I was able to get it out of my front pants pocket and lit in seconds. It is there in case someone gets me into some type of hold or down to the ground with them. No one is still going to be holding on when that touches them. I can carry it almost anywhere and no one thinks of it as a last-ditch weapon. Oh, and I can light cigars as well.

Get one with wide nodes and large sparks ! Superior to any other tool for self defense in the woods. Second is Bear (pepper) Spray, and lastly a large caliber handgun. I used to also carry flares. In my area, carrying a fixed blade really seems like overkill, and I'm not sure if it's even legal. About 10 years ago I found the Gerber Paraframe II. When I'm in a situation that seems sketchy, whether it's humans or dogs, I slip it out palmed in my hand so it's not visible to a potential attacker. It's very quick and easy to open one-handed. I practice both of these movements regularly.
About a year ago I also started carrying the tactical pen sold by Jason Hanson. I like that I can take it through airport security, which I've done numerous times, and it's a less lethal option for dealing with humans.

Spyderco Matriarch is a great blade, but you will also need to carry a utility knife as it has one purpose.
Surefire E2D Defender flashlight or equivalent is essential for places you can't have weapons like on airplanes. I was attacked in a nightclub, ended up in a choke hold by a drunk showing off to his friends. I gave him 2 seconds to "win" and let go, but instead he started squeezing harder. That was a no-go so I grabbed the defender carried appendix and jammed the sharp strike bezel into his wrist and twisted, cutting him down to the bone. He let go instantly while screaming that I had a knife. Security grabbed me and pulled me aside shouting where is the knife. I said knife? All I have is a flashlight. They were perplexed and let me go before trowing the attacker and his friends out. I had to go wash the blood off my hands and the flashlight.

I carry different things at different times of the year. But my three favorite items are my 26 inch collapsible baton. A solid fixed blade like a Cold Steel Recon Tanto, Cold Steel Tac 1 or a Hoffner Hand Spear. And a high intensity FlashLight.
Here in Canada Firearms are being banned in a big way. They are planning on confiscation. People still have HandGuns but they are essentially banned. You can't use them or go anywhere with them. You can't buy any or sell them. And there is no such thing as carrying a Firearm here. Well unless you are a criminal. Then you are okay.
Also Pepper Spray is not to be carried. You are not supposed to carry other weapons either like knives. In fact you cannot carry any implement for the purpose of self defense. To do so will probably get you arrested. If you carry anything. It has to be kept a secret.
But if you have nothing with you. Your chances of survival are slim. We have a crime wave going on. And the cops are telling us to leave our key fobs at the door. So thieves don't have to go looking for it when they come to steal our cars. Because they have real loaded guns and will use them.
The cops have become useless in the fight against crime but they don't want you to take the steps to protect yourself or your loved ones. For me Bad Laws are asking to be ignored and broken. When half a dozen people with no knowledge. And are out of touch with reality make Laws that Millions of us are expected to follow without offering any challenge. That does NOT make any sense. Just protect yourself, they are not going to be there to help you. Fortunately for you in the USA. You do not suffer the restrictions we do in Defenseless Canada.

Like the Outdoors guy I decided a year ago to carry the same big three he has: I have a North American Arms .22 magnum 5-shot Pug revolver; an excellent American Flag 3.5 inch blade folding knife and pepper spray jell. Considering all the scenarios I could when I deliver food at night, walk at night and riding my bike 5 months a year in our excellent Chicago suburban trails, I realized I needed one more tool, for a large, dangerous dog. I don't want to shoot at a dog, I'm not nimble enough to use a knife on a vicious dog and same with pepper spray, it would be hit or miss. But, for $15 I got a Mini Marine Air Horn and was amazed at the enormous blast of sound coming out of this very compact device. IT IS DEAFENING. I cannot imagine it not working on most dogs. It's so loud that I've only tried it out, in the open, and then only in .5 second blasts. I can only imagine how holding the button down for long blasts will deafen me and any attacking dog! Note: I mix and match these tools, depending on the activity.

Fantastic video. I’m getting old. I think I’ve officially entered “FUDD” stage because even though I got a few semi-autos (old Gen 3 Glocks) I find myself preferring wheel guns. Snubby .38s.
I’ve also had the same cardinal rule about edged weapons. I never leave without one. In fact if I had to choose in only having either a firearm or a knife, I’d go with the edged weapon. It’ll never run dry of ammo and it’ll never jam.
Agreed on pepper spray too. I’ll just leave this here. I used to haul freight into CA every week. I of course couldn’t carry a gun. CA (surprisingly) allows edged weapons (not fixed blades unless you open carry it) and pepper spray.
If you truly feel your life is in danger. If you know its you or them, pepper spray in tandem with an edged weapon is a very effective substitution when you can’t have a firearm. I’ll leave it at that.

I can't disagree for self defense. Brilliant choices for self protection. I do have a wish for a brilliant solution on getting folks who carry to have some training. Overall I am mid 60's and am concerned about this fear carried by people. I have worked in prison (staff are most often unarmed) and have travelled the world. I have walked homeless camps and most cities in the world. I go on frequent walks and hikes. When i go on walks i carry a good solid walking stick. Mostly because of the possibility of a dog bothering my dog. On a long hike - bear mace is recommended. When mushroom hunting at least one of are party packs a pistol. lucky for me- I have never been attacked or been in a situation where a gun or a knife were needed. Keep your head on a swivel. A dose of fearfulness is wisdom. Living in constant fear is not recommended. I do own guns but bear spray is what is on my bedside table.

My brother I haven't yet to understand how you and me think 100% alike that's what turned me on to your videos when I watched one of your videos and I saw you training with saps and blackjacks which are weapons have been training with for years and training others with and then I started watching the rest of your videos and your mindset and mine are 100% alike. I too carry pepper spray along with other items including a firearm and the blade I prefer is push daggers but I do carry other types of blades as well but my everyday carry includes a firearm or two and a blade and pepper spray and I also carry a SAP on me as well so I always mix it up each day is a little different. I was in the restaurant business for many years I grew up in it and we had drunks coming in there all the time and then we had vagrants that would sleep out in my trash cans and I had to go back there numerous amounts of times and they are not armed with guns but they do carry sharp objects such as screwdrivers, ice picks and also pieces of glass. So I've been in situations where I had to pepper spray some of them when being outnumbered or when I seen them going in to their pockets, I didn't wait for them to pull anything out once I saw them reach into their pockets I just went ahead and pepper sprayed them and they either went to the ground apologizing and then left or they'd turn and run covering their eyes and many times they tripped over themselves because they couldn't see. Bottom line is they never came back and after that I put a fence around my trash cans with a lock on it. And like you said there's those times when you do not want to shoot somebody because they're either a vagrant or a drunk and they are not armed with a gun but they may be armed with a sharp object or with nothing but they want to hurt you physically with their hands and you don't want to shoot them, so the next alternative is either some pepper spray, blackjack / Sap or ASP baton. I also have used tear gas and mace back in the 90s and that is effective as well. I've also used stun guns as well. Being in the bar and restaurant business non-lethal weapons are a must. Thanks for sharing my friend and be safe.

However it is legal for me to carry a knife with a non locking blade under 3 inches in length. As long as it's not intended to be used for self defence. It's also legal for me to carry a large fixed blade knife if I have a legitimate reason (filleting knife while fishing on the beach for example). As long as it's not intended to be used for self protection. I can also purchase and own an AR15 as long as I have a valid firearms certificate and the gun is stored in a secure location (the police will inspect the storage and interview you before issuing the certificate) But I'm not allowed to use it for self protection. Oh and pepper spray is classed as a firearm. I'm not kidding!

And I might add that NYC and SF have already adopted similar to your policy, setting the hand-over without prosecution at a much higher $1000. Crime there has exploded. Your idea doesn't work.

In my car I carry a pepper spray. It was useful in a case of road rage, where showing it was already enough to deter the offender.

As my judo coach used to say - the best self-defense is quick feet, but if that doesn't help and a fight is inevitable, attack first and so the opponent doesn't get up anymore.

Head on a swivel with escape routes when indoors. Also, I have "safety toe" sneakers and boots that are lightweight if things get close, and always the belt knife. Good video!

I worked security for a bit. Took the firearms class and baton and also oc. I had an option to get pepper sprayed and i did. The instructor said it would help in court if i ever used so i know how it feels. You would want to make a Z pattern across the eyes nose and mouth. It's not a pleasant experience lol

I have a box cutter in my car and carry a small knife. I need a bigger one, but women often don’t have pockets. Why can’t we have pockets? Anyway, I am an old lady who lives alone. I have box cutters because they’re easy to use. I have them placed around my house. I also have wasp spray that shoots 12 feet or so. I take box cutter, pepper spray, and a stick when I go for a walk. I have a gun, but it’s a big clumsy rifle - a .22. It was my dad’s, and I have only fired it once. I have heard that one should never use a weapon they are not trained in. Good advice here. Gibbs from NCIS had those rules, and one of them was “never go anywhere without a knife.”

Just a hint if pepper spray is illegal in your area. Get a small metal tin with a hinged lid that closes tightly, a mint container works well. Fill it with finely ground black and cayenne pepper and keep it in your pocket. If needed you pop the lid and either flip it at the person or dump some in your hand and throw it. Works REALLY well and is not as easily seen as a canister of spray.
My EDC items are a Cold Steel polypropylene escrima stick converted to a cane with a rubber tip and rubber hand grip, an easy opening tactical folder/fixed bladed karambit or tanto and garlic/cayenne pepper spray or the canned pepper mixture.

For women watching this, you MUST have the best quality pepper spray and test it outdoors and make sure is always FRESH AND READY and not DRY. STAY ALERT and keep distance from others when walking out by yourself.

John Correia has a good saying about the role of pepper spray. It's for "When you need something between a harsh word, and a gun."

Here in the UK you can’t carry a gun, knife, pepper spray or taser. This is why I carry a walking stick, one with a crook, this becomes a medical aid and therefore not an offence weapon, also a large belt with a heavy buckle. I think here, if they could, would charge you if you carried a f**kin pencil more then four inches long. 😔 It’s a sad and very violent world we life in and I can’t help feeling the current crop of movies, TV shows and gaming arcades make a persons life very cheap.

Very on point self-defense carry and P.O.C I always always carry one knuckle tool alongside my knife and mace when I'm going to work or on a trip. Same purpose I have carried my firearm, and I seriously didn't see why carry it out off work? But at times, I still will carry it out of work depending where I'm going and for what.

Being from the UK, I've always wondered what it must be like to be able to carry a firearm with everyone else also being able to carry a firearm, does it feel more dangerous? I know police reactions in the US are often much more heavy handed than in the UK as a result.
I think the gun laws are right for both countries and our cultures, though. I can see why over there in the US, you feel that your 2nd amendment is precious, but I think there are advantages of having the firearm restrictions that we have here in the UK as well. (I'm sure most US viewers will disagree with that, though).

Appreciate the review, but none of these options are available in the UK. The best option I can suggest is some hand to hand combat training such as Krav maga ( but this has to be practised continuously to be effective).

I worked in a retail gun store for 12 years. The overwhelming majority of firearm purchasers will never get proper training. Never practice enough. Never hit their target with their firearm in a life-or-death scenario. And always hesitate to use it.
