Not many people seem to realize this but this Album has 4 characters telling their experience. The four main characters portrayed in the album are: Matthew J. Fuller (played by John Dillon) - The 23-year-old son of a Southern cotton planter, he received a full education in college and military academy. When the Civil War begins, he joins the Confederate Army infantry regiment as a captain. Polly Ann Stafford (played by Jessi Colter) - Matthew's significant other; at the start of the war, she begins working in a hospital, tending to wounded and dying soldiers. Caleb Stone (played by Steve Cash) - Representing the stereotype of "white trash", Caleb is a man who possesses neither a permanent job nor his own property or land, opting instead for accepting random jobs requiring little skill. He detests the powerful plantation owners of the South and fights against the Union to "preserve his superiority over the blacks and hatred for Yankees.” The Drifter (played by Waylon Jennings) - The Drifter is the album's narrator. His real name is not known, but the listener is told that he was wounded fighting for Texas in the U.S.-Mexican War; during the Civil War, he doesn't participate in the fighting, traveling from town to town and commenting on the events that unfold instead.
Lyrics (ORCHESTRAL INTRO) the ladies they glide, through the ballrooms they ride with the young men hard at their heels they know how to tease, they know how to please but you're they only one who knows how love feels would you dance with a friend, for until this war ends there's no more time would you take this next waltz, would you hold me so close just one more time as the orchestra plays, I watch you amazed at the grace of your step and your poise it grieves me inside to know I'll soon ride and leave you lost in the laughter and noise would you dance with a friend, for until this war ends there's no more time would you take this next waltz, would you hold me so close just one more time your regiment is leaving Georgia you must join them right away your orders are to ride to Centerville and engage without delay but before you turn your back on me before you finally go there are some things that I must give to you some things that you should know I'll send a Kentucky racehorse with a rider and a prayer to speed my words of love to you so you'll know that I still care I'd pay a king's ransom and I'd live on cornbread too just to keep your precious smile alive and to live my life with you for the time you'll be away from me all the days that lie ahead dear heart, please keep the memories we share like we share my bed although I won't have your helping hand or keep your sweet company darling when you're fighting this war please think a little bit about me I'll send a Kentucky racehorse with a rider and a prayer to speed my words of love to you so you'll know that I still care your carriage awaits with its horses at the gates to take you home to your mansion so grand where in comfort you'll stay, safe from the fray till I return to ask for your hand would you dance with a friend, for until this war ends there's no more time would you take this next waltz, would you hold me so close just one more time would you dance with a friend, for until this war ends there's no more time would you take this next waltz, would you hold me so close just one more time
Thank you...Great listening to this after all those years. Brilliant Album, wound be really nice to hear some of the tracks from the album, every now and then on the radio
I used this album for my studies in 6th form. We were doing about the book Cold Mountain and looking at the Civil War using this cd and the booklet. I fell in love with this song the moment I heard it. I'm from the UK.
the best historical album sad that some people try to hide it it is ab important part of history storytelling at its best if you jnow of any other let me know
This whole album was written & conceived by Paul Kennerley (a British guy originally from Liverpool I believe). I've got a couple of copies including the first issue that came complete with a book about the songs and the storyline.
You sir are WRONG!!! It 100% was written by an Irishman. Not only did I hear these songs as I fell asleep as an infant; but also on my first trip abroad to Ireland it became common knowledge of "white Marion's," due to the fact that an Irishman wrote it.
@Cuzindude i was born 3 years before the 100th and in alabama all my life.. blacks rode on the busses, they ate the same places i did and they all voted, that chose to. hollywood would have you believe different and you have bought into that. but i was here. im not white, and i felt alot of predjudice, but there was oportunity and all one had to do was get off their ass and work to have something. its not that way today. now nobody works, all look to the government for aid, menewa was right.
The civil rights leaders weren’t “peaceful.” They walked into random neighborhoods and stoked racial tension that really never existed the way it’s told

Lyrics
(ORCHESTRAL INTRO)
the ladies they glide, through the ballrooms they ride
with the young men hard at their heels
they know how to tease, they know how to please
but you're they only one who knows how love feels
would you dance with a friend, for until this war ends
there's no more time
would you take this next waltz, would you hold me so close
just one more time
as the orchestra plays, I watch you amazed
at the grace of your step and your poise
it grieves me inside to know I'll soon ride
and leave you lost in the laughter and noise
would you dance with a friend, for until this war ends
there's no more time
would you take this next waltz, would you hold me so close
just one more time
your regiment is leaving Georgia
you must join them right away
your orders are to ride to Centerville
and engage without delay
but before you turn your back on me
before you finally go
there are some things that I must give to you
some things that you should know
I'll send a Kentucky racehorse
with a rider and a prayer
to speed my words of love to you
so you'll know that I still care
I'd pay a king's ransom
and I'd live on cornbread too
just to keep your precious smile alive
and to live my life with you
for the time you'll be away from me
all the days that lie ahead
dear heart, please keep the memories
we share like we share my bed
although I won't have your helping hand
or keep your sweet company
darling when you're fighting this war
please think a little bit about me
I'll send a Kentucky racehorse
with a rider and a prayer
to speed my words of love to you
so you'll know that I still care
your carriage awaits with its horses at the gates
to take you home to your mansion so grand
where in comfort you'll stay, safe from the fray
till I return to ask for your hand
would you dance with a friend, for until this war ends
there's no more time
would you take this next waltz, would you hold me so close
just one more time
would you dance with a friend, for until this war ends
there's no more time
would you take this next waltz, would you hold me so close
just one more time

White Mansions is a Soul Connection💛
Yes to draw my revolvers , then throw their holsters on the ground. But for what reason?
Yrs it is. It hits deep as I live in the south and my kin fought with the CSA.
3rd best song about horses. 2nd being Union Mare and the Confederate Grey. And taking 1st place by a nose is Father Ted's My Lovely Horse.

@@MDC249 Why have you got to argue? He was English
@@stewartswain694 it would appear as if you are the only attempting to carry on an argument.
@@MDC249 Correcting you for shouting your mouth off. He is English not Irish

White Mansions is a wonderful concept album. It really seems to capture the Pride , hopes, suffering and fall of the Old South.
Winston Posters exactly

The U.S. should’ve let the South leave; the U.K. South Africa in 1961. How ironic. Isn’t that (in the 1961)?
