I backed the piston out until it showed 2 "shoulders" on the dust boot. There are 3 rings in the dust boot. The boot seats and then the ring slides past the two shoulders and snaps into place in between the outer boot "ring" and the middle boot "ring" snapped in place fairly easier and then used a blunt punch to push the snap ring into place. The video was awesome. It got me thru it. Lol thanks again!!
My Haines manual describes in remarkable detail how to rebuild the entire engine. For the rear caliper it simply says the repair is beyond the ability of a home rebuild and to take it to a professional, lol. Thanks for eliminating the mystery!
Well now I feel special. Haha. Really nothing odd or complicated as long as you can get the parts.
@@IconGarage I just finished rebuilding my calipers last night. The hardest part for me was fishing the boot retaining wire out. Reassembly was surprisingly painless. But then I already did it once vicariously through your video. Thanks again for taking the time.
Great video! The complaints of it being too long I feel come from those that are not going to do their own rebuild. You can skip through what you need. Really appreciate you taking the time, this will help me as I am rebuilding mine this weekend! :)
Yeah, it is very specific and likely doesn’t appeal to most. The goal was to help those rebuilding their FDs and that’s enough for me.
@@IconGarage It helped me! I rebuilt both my rear calipers and got them on two days ago. You should order the spoon style picks, they are great for this type of thing. I also found that if you push the piston in, then lube the dust boot, put it in place, you can slide the exterior ring in place super easy!
Thanks for the video. I would never have the patience or the dexterity to do a job like this. Well done.
I would urge other viewers to recommend this channel to their friends. Needs more exposure.
Keep up the good work :)
Thank you!
Thanks; My E brake on the drivers side was hung up,at the caliper; So it was nice to see, in advance how it works, before getting into it !! [1988 Vert]
Even tho this brake rebuild takes forever i really like your videos and they are really helpfull if you have issues like this and they really show how tidius it is to do something like this and how much effort you have to put in something like this to do it right:) thanks for the videos keep it up with restoring dreamcars and ofcourse the videos:)thanks
Doing this for the second time, some some advice. The e brake shafts are not interchangeable. I noticed this when my brake didn’t work. It would lock up in the opposite direction of the cable pull. Also you do not need to compress the spring and the washer to seat the c clip. Seat the clip the just put on the spring and washer after.
Just noticed this. Which is the correct orientation for the e brake shaft. Is it the correct orientation in the video?
Very good video again. Thanks for taking the time to explain everything in detail 👌
Nice steady work on a fiddly job! Bring on the fronts.
Nice videos. nearly identical procedure worked 2nd Gen calipers though some parts were slightly different and there were no springs.
Seems like painting before rebuilding makes more sense
Seems like paint in the bore would be way worse than paint on the exposed face of the piston.
@@prescottmajette5290 Don't know man, I think if you put on the old dust boots with a round piece of cardboard instead of the piston under them you should be fine.
Alessio Panu fair enough, but I'd still rather just mask off the the installed pistons
Nice video, a realistic rebuild. :)
awesome man!! although not the most exciting video.. very informative.. love it!!
Thank you.
Thank you for this sir. I will be doing this soon on my RX-7 as well.
Good luck! Hopefully you will have a little less rust to deal with.
try using a vice to hold the caliper so you have the use of both hands while doing the reassembly of the parts, especially the dust boot.
Great video
Here’s an idea: post the long videos for the nerds and a shorter, time-lapsed summary of the long videos for everyone else who can’t pay attention to a video for longer than 10 min
Leo V. Yea he has an hour and a half of brake content over the span of 4 videos lmao
nice job!
Nice. Very informative. Although why not paint them when you had everything apart?
Thanks for the post, it will be a great help in rebuilding my mx-6 calipers. Looks like they are just about the same as the RX-7. Unfortunately I the kit is not available from dealer or atkins. I was able to get centric rebuild kit from rockauto. Only issue is no grease. Been searching for the pink and orange grease, but cannot find it. Looks like I am down to getting the Castro red rubber grease.
Do you think that will be alright to use on everything including packing the bearing? I really don't see that bearing ever wearing out,
The biggest thing to know is if the grease is good to use with rubber and does not break down when exposed to brake fluid while also being adequate for the temperature range. See if you can find the MSDS online for the grease you have and see if there are any limitations or compatibility issues. I think a lot of modern greases have better properties. Theoretically there are different recommended uses for orange vs. pink vs. red, etc. greases.
but in the pistons, is correct add a tiny film of copper grease? thank
I’d tend to stay away from copper grease. It is a little thick in my opinion and may gum up. If you are literally talking inside the piston “cup”, I don’t think it is necessary. Maybe I’m not clear where you are asking.
Before and then the gum ring inside, where pistons run. Because i read it on instructiin case of arexon paste
Why don't you use an ultrasonic cleaner for your parts? Wouldn't that be useful and less abrasive than sandpaper?
I guess you have watched a lot of James May repair videos then :)
I can appreciate a job done right, that's why I change my own oil. I also appreciate saving as many of the original parts on an FD as possible, BUT, with the amount of time and money in parts you have spent, breaking it down, cleaning, repairing, and rebuilding everything, Wouldn't it have been more efficient to buy a rebuild part from MAZDA and place this much attention to detail on other more important parts, such as the engine or interior?
Step one was to make the car more reliable and safe to drive. Buying new or reman parts would have been faster, but I am trying to document as much of the rebuild that makes sense or may be useful to others. I already have 80% or more of the interior parts to redo the whole interior. A lot of attention will be going into the interior, engine, suspension, and body. None of this will be or hasn’t been cheap and parts are getting harder to come by, so I have to spend my money wisely. I am anxious to strip down the motor and rebuild it. That will be the biggest task with this car.
@@IconGarage How much would it have been to buy a rebuilt version of this brake part from what you found? And how/where would you get it? I'm guessing JDM stuff is trickier to obtain especially on old niche stuff like this.
I cannot for the life of me to get the damn snap ring to stay in place, for 2 weeks I've tried but nope
The one that holds the boot around the piston? I had to trim mine just a little so it wouldn’t hit itself when fit over the boot.
If it’s the inside snap ring, it is a pain. The 90 degree snap ring pliers should do the trick, but as I showed in the video, it took using a socket to help push it down in there.
It is the inside snap ring. I have a pair of the 90 degree snap ring pliers and have used a socket and c clamp to hold it in place. Im about to give in and just get new real calipers.
It’s been a while since I made that video and can’t think of any other tips/tricks that might be helpful. New or rebuilt calipers can be pricey.
Those extended pliers would've save me a lot of cursing. If you have to use a socket to keep it down you really don't have much room for normal pliers to go in there.
I would've recommended painting/powdercoating before rebuilding though, you'll never be able to put paint in between where the rubber boot and the calipers sit at this stage (Exactly where the calipers rusted from the previous video)
Nice job. But too long of a video for anyone that is not trying to follow you step by step at home.
