@@tonybush555 I watched both TLG and Telefon over the weekend. I found Telefon to be far better. TLG had a good opening and ending but it dragged in the middle and could have done with 30 mins taken out.
It's years since I seen this and recall liking it. As I recall (maybe wrongly) it almost a companion piece to Seven days in may. The frankenheimer/Lancaster classic from the sixties. Great review as usual & put on list of catch up movies
I would add that any thriller like this was aided by having Jerry Goldsmith doing the music score and Goldsmith is up to his usual task of giving the movie an edge of your seat ride to it .
Both Goldsmith and Aldrich had remarkable variety in the careers. It is hard to keep track of all their movies and I keep getting re-surprised at just how much zipping around genres both men accomplished.
Funny , it's the same starting point that Michael Bay's The Rock. Watch again the Choirboys, it's a great dark comedy, very satirical as M.A.S.H & watch All the Marbles, it's a realy good movie
After watching this film I was trying to think at the time, what was meant by Twighlights Last Gleaming. " Its part of the USA national anthem you burke.' said my brother at the time. The film as you said Tony was not one of his best. I was really looking forward to his next project ( The Choirboys ) with Charles Durning. I had just finished reading the novel by Joseph Wambaghm and I thought it would turn out to be a great film. Well, it wasn;t, it was a complete cop out, entirely different ending, and I blamed Aldrich for that, Then I looked back on Twilight and thought, maybe he did the same thing with that film. Your a great director and should have had some input in the script. It was a disappointment in many aspects. Cheers Tony.
Give "The Choirboys" another look. It's not the greatest, but it's got a fantastic cast and Phyllis Davis as a dominatrix. What more could you ask for?
Great Review. I appreciate your honesty. I found the plot to be extremely contrived and very silly. The ending is weak with a tidy little ribbon and bow to tie it all up. Nevertheless, it was great fun and worked hard to squeeze out every ounce of tension. The cast helped sell the story and, as you say, do not think too hard. At least "The Rock" did a more action-packed take on the idea of a patriot soldier going rogue.
There's the germ of a really good idea in there somewhere that needed a different script to exploit it to its potential. But as you point out, Tom, what we got was great fun, and sometimes that can be enough. Thanks for commenting. Appreciated. T.
Im a big fan of this film, great cast with some legends in there, thought it pretty smart to use the split screens to build the tension helped by Goldsmith's score. The political agenda is pretty radical - no film at the time went into the why of Vietnam - Go Tell The Spartans (also with Burt L) maybe. Its a brutally cynical film about American govt and policy - and the ending is one of the most downbeat of all time, up there with Parallax View. I mean i dont think there is any film WHICH actually shows govt complicity in action - not some deep state shadow group (Parallax) or cabal (any Oliver Stone film) acting in secret. Is it a mistake or an order? Either way, its pretty bleak. Note: like how Aldrich has Durning play a version of Chicago Mayor Richard "Boss" Daley if he was president.
This was a very good movie the leads were very good but the supporting players I feel really stole the show especially in the scene where the president's military advisor basically tells him the hell would who was in the white house before you you got to go telling him what he has to do and Paul Winfield in his scene where he basically tells Burt Lancaster the military doesn't give too s**** for this president but basically is stressing what he's not allowed to do he had the best line in that moving when he says grow up general nobody has to honor anyting
Really liked this movie we need a remake of this film ( keeping it serious no current politically correct nonsense) it does have flaws especially the splitting screen scenes but enjoyable.
A good way to spend two hours. Not perfect but better than 99% of today's films. As an experiment, google best films of (and then put a year before 1985). You'll probably find at least ten movies from the year you chose that you'd like to watch. Then do the same for post 2000. Bloody Star Wars.
I enjoy the Walter Wager books. His books are good enjoyable pulp.
Only ever read Telefon - but enjoyed it well enough. Thanks, thatguy.

Come on, that one on Tom Cruise was uncalled for.
He is 13 inches above the maximum limit of someone with dwarfism.
Sorry, my mistake. I've sold him short.
Just finished watching it again ,really good.I love the split screens .So 70's !Needs to be seen on the big screen
Thanks, Yann.

@@tonybush555 yes I'm sure about it .By the way I've started to watch Who dares wins again.Lewis Collins was so cool!
I wouldn't be surprised if that's where the TV show 24 was influenced by the split screen sequence
I just notice Cliff from cheers plays one of the servicemen sent down the elevator shaft of the nuclear silo

The president was supposed to be played by Paul Newman but he turned the part down
Interesting movie
