I don't mean to sound dramatic but I searched through and watched several videos on this procedure and none of them left me feeling confident until I came across this one. I am so glad you took the time to make this video as well as how thorough you were with your explanations. this is something I gladly would of paid to learn. I feel like a huge burden has been lifted from me. thank you so much

Agree but count on jeep to come up with something so wonky and transmission fluid goes bad eventually

Nice. I have a 2014 Jeep Patriot Sport D (the basic of basic models). I took it to the Jeep dealership who lied to me and said the transmission was completely sealed and there was no way to ever change the fluid. Several mechanics later and they could not figure anything out. One mechanic actually said they managed to find the transmission fluid "dipstick" of which there is none. And then, after having to deal with Google's idiocy of "personalized search results" that almost never, EVER gives relevant search results... I stumbled across this video just today. All those professionals, Jeep mechanics, etc... none could figure it out. Personally I think they were just lazy and knew how difficult the job was and simply did not want to earn some money on a difficult job. As a side note, mechanics (and other professions) are - by Supreme Court decision - allowed to lie to you to sell you parts you do not need... as long as they are not being paid by a third-party to do so. The reasoning being that certain Supreme Court Justices reason that you - as a consumer - are savvy enough to know whether or not you need said part.

I'm a mech. Mostly work on semi's but I also do work on small cars and trucks as well. Despite @troyherriman's critique I think this was a decent vid. He told us at the beginning that he was figuring it out as he went because he was told, not that it was sealed, but that you did not have to change it which you don't. That is why there's no dipstick and the fill and drain ports are positioned like they are. The only reason these ports are intended to be used is if the dealership or another shop has to "replace" a damaged transmission with a new one. That being said the video was informative and decent. Dealership mechs are what they are; Dealership mechs. They only learn what the manufacturer trains them on for that particular model. If the manual says you don't change then that's what they know. It's not that they're lying to you because that makes no sense from a mech standpoint. In other words he/she is not going to turn your money down on an unnecessary procedure. He/she is just going to charge you for it. A dealership mech will not change transmission fluid if the manual says you don't change it because to change it is against the recommended manufacturer manual and the dealership will be held liable if something happens once you leave. Plus the fact that since you don't change it there's no book hour scale for the job to charge you by. A non-deakership shop will charge for the procedure cause that's what you wanted and charge for the unnecessary job to make the money. So here's how it works out. Regular tranny with a dipstick and drain plug is 30 min job easy peasy. Book hour minimum is 1hr @ $150- $175 p/h. On this patriot. Taking all the crap off just to get to the tranny, popping the three port plugs, draining and refill, replacing the three port plugs model and then putting all the crap by that you removed to get to it in the first place. 2 1/2 - 3hr jod @ $150-$175 p/h. See where I'm going here?

Your video helped me change the trans fluid on my 2014 Compass. I bought the factory dipstick and used Valvoline max life fluid.
My OTC scan tool would not show the trans temperature, but my Autel did. the infrared temp gun showed about 10 degrees F less than the scanner. I ondy drained out about 3 quarts, but it took 5.5 quarts to fill. I bought the car new and there were never any leaks so it was underfilled from the factory! Hopefully it did no damage in the 43,000 miles I put on it. What a pain in the A** job just to change trans fluid. Thank you for posting the video.

PSA, easiest way to do this is normal Hyundai method then top off with 700ml extra. It's from a patriot service bulletin. Empty fluid, refill, get transmission to operating temp, flat level surface, put in park, neutral, drive reverse for 2 sec each, then do it again. Open full check port and allow extra fluid to flow out while engine is running for 3 min, close port, then top off with 700ml. All done, no dipstick needed

  • @surfordie82
    @surfordie82 5 років тому +4

Great video and explanation. But boy, what a pain in the butt process to check the fluid level! I'm with the others here... when I do this procedure on my girlfriend's Patriot, I'm just going to re-fill the trans with the exact amount that was drained out and call it a day. I can understand if the vehicle was bought second hand and you are unsure of if it has been serviced before, you would want to be positive that the level is correct. However, in our case, she bought the Jeep new and it still shifts pretty good with 68k on the factory fill. So... assuming Chrysler got it right from the factory, there should be no problem re-filling with the amount of fluid drained.

I just did a drain and fill on a cold block on my 15 compass with the six speed 6F24 powertech transmission, and 77k on the clock. I put what came out into a clean gallon jug, and just poured new fluid in another gallon jug and matched the levels. The valvoline maxlife LV fluid is what I used, and now it shifts a lot smoother, and the shudder I used to get going up hills is gone now. I'm still going to buy the special dipstick, and later in the year do two more drain and fills. You have to pour the fluid in the fill port very slowly, and during the fill there were two burps of air releasing out of the case.

    • @surfordie82

I think also a Chrysler transmission dipstick #1017 is the same. I have a 14 compass with the hyundai sourced 6F24 6 speed auto dual clutch transmission, have looked into doing a fluid drain and fill as well. Most Chrysler techs don't even know how to perform this service, and since as they like to say the unit is "sealed" they don't like to touch it. Now that I can see where the check port is I will plan on doing this. Have fun if you ever try a radiator flush on the patriot...you have to take the front bumper off to drain the radiator. Blame the poor design on the germans since the car was developed when Daimler owned Chrysler.

If you pull off the side cover where the rubber seal hole is located on the transmission there is actually a mesh screen filter that should be changed every few fluid changes too.
I saw this on a Hyundai video with the same junky engineered German transmission.
First Mercedes after buying Chrysler forced their sealed German transmissions, this one included on Chrysler then Fiat after buying Chrysler makes the same mistake using ZF German transmissions that have had many problems and hard to service too.
By the way all the major German automakers, Hyundai, Kia and yes now Honda are all using the ZF automatic transmissions and all are having problems with them.
    So much for Honda quality.

In the 6 speed automatic it takes roughly 5 liters but you have to fine tune the fluid level with a factory tool (dipstick).

good question. It has been a few years. If you just want to check the fluid level I would just take it for a drive before checking it. IF you do a drain fill just measure the amount that came out and refill with the same amount. Once you are done take it for a drive and then do the check.

Hi there, just noticed that you commented and ask me a question. I don't exactly remember how much fluid it was but just drain the old into a bucket that has a scale to give you an idea how much you have to put back. Afterwards you have to get yourself one of those dipsticks (#10323A or #1017). I think in the video I mentioned 4 liters or 4.3 quarts. That is what you put in to start and then you use the factory dipstick to fine tune the level of fluid in your trans. I hope that helps. , Heiko
