Learn 3 ways to add texture in Adobe Illustrator on your own vector designs and make them stand out. You will get a step-by-step process breakdown on how to apply these textured effects and where you can find them.
The first way to add texture in illustrator is to make a copy of the shape you’re adding this effect on and from the Effect panel open up Texture - then select the Grain option.

That will show you a preview of what’s happening to the shape you’re using and on the right-hand side, you will have a couple of options you can actually play with to get closer to the texture effect that you like.
For the second way of adding it, you will need a photo to work with. Using Unsplash you can search for paper and you’ll have a couple of options to choose from. Right-click, copy the image and then bring Illustrator back and paste this thing in.
With the image selected, go to the tracing options on the top bar and select the black and white logo option.
Afterward, you can keep only the dark shapes of the vector texture and apply a color that makes it blend in.
The last of the three ways to add texture in Illustrator is through grain or noise brushes.
In the tutorial, I’ll create a new one, as the process is pretty straightforward, try to organize the small vector shapes in a circular shape.
Once you have them selected, go to Window and open up the brushes panel, from there click on the create a new brush and select the scatter option.
Using the paintbrush and the draw inside mode activate, start drawing with the grain brush selected and you will get the texture effect you’re looking for.

Very helpful. Not sure if someone noted this already, but in option #2, when using the trace panel, you can select a check box to "ignore white" so you don't have to select it and delete it afterwards.
Awesome tip, I didn't know that, thanks Jesse!
I know im asking the wrong place but does someone know a tool to get back into an Instagram account?
I somehow lost my login password. I appreciate any tricks you can give me.
Literally just blew my mind. I love Illustrator to bits, but have always disliked the fact that you can't get the same yummy textures as inside Photoshop. But you're telling me that after all this time, making projects for YEARS, that there's 3 EASY WAYS to get that toothy grit? I am LITERALLY SHOOK 😲 Thank you so much oh my god
Haha that's great to hear that these techniques helped 🥳
Such an amazing tutorial. I love the varied options and detailed explanations without wasting any time.
Definitely method 3. It's more flexible where you could create any type of shapes to customize your own texture, more options such as adjusting the brush's properties and to save it for future reuse . Thank you
Short and to the point. Exactly what interested people need. I hardly give likes to tutorials. yours is really amazing! Thank you!
Thank you! love this style of tutorial! Clear, to the point and friendly. Not wasting viewers time with a bunch of edits and emphasis on trying to be humorous or whatnot.

Glad to hear that - thank you!
This is amazing. Thank you! Now I'm just stuck on how to use technique 2 and then get it to fit my squashed hexagon shape of a logo. It was too complex for a clipping mask and for shape builder.
Glad it was helpful! Try to create a compound path before masking it with a complex shape
Thanks! very useful
Glad it was helpful Andrea, thanks for stopping by!
Thank you for video

Damn that second option is very smart! Great video.
Awesome to hear that you like that option, thank you for watching!
Hey Cosmin, Very good job my friend ..

the last one is cool!
Thanks Adi, I also tend to enjoy working with texture brushes more than just apply some noise on top of an illustration. Have a great day!
thank you genius

mindblownnnn🔥
🙌 awesome - thanks for leaving this comment
light pink
to the entire ting✨
The third one seems the best, but damn the process feels a wee bit complicated. I'll practice the steps though. Thanks for this video!

Could you suggest some free brushes for making textures as i am not good at pen tool. And also please link in the files of these illustrations. GREAT VIDEO
this is what I was looking for
Thanks for leaving this comment, happy the tutorial helped :)
@@CosminSerbanDesign I created some great illustration because of your tutorial. I have a question though. When I use brushes my file gets really big and the software is getting really slow, is there a way to compress layers into a single layer like in photoshop? Thank you
@@Monika-tv8np hey, I usually just load up 1 or two brushes at a time that tends to help with the speed, but since they are vectors Illustrator will render each shape in the texture, have you tried expanding them?
geat job...aren't textures heavy to load in after effects animations?
Amazing one ... (y)
Thank you Jason, really appreciate it!
@CosminSerban Welcome..
Hi thanks for the video, one question on the 1st method.
When I’m doing this it alters the shape is there a way around this?
Hey, could you give me more details?
Awesome tutorial! The 3rd method went by much too fast for me though.
Hi! This tutorial is game changing for me, thank you so much! I have one problem though - I can't click on draw inside mode, it's greyed out. Two first modes work fine. It doesn't change when I click on an object - still can't choose it. Help!
Hey Karolina, try to ungroup it and it should work or if it's made out of multiple elements, create a compound path out of all of them and try again - let me know it that helped
Have a nice day 🛎❤👍👌
You too, thanks for stopping by!
I'm learning illustration on an Android tablet. I use Adobe Illustrator Draw. Any tips on how can I add texture to it? I have tried other apps but I'm not very good at making the use of the texture brushes. My illustrations look very solid due to plain colors. I don't like them eventually. Please help me with textures
Install Adobe Fresco and you can add photoshop brushes there, so you can add texture more easily, hope this help!
more!
Will try hehe
