I’ve worked for showrooms 10+ years. I caution to be careful bc most don’t provide the needed support staff or labor to finish out the jobs properly. More specifically, kitchen and bath designers are expected to do way more than what’s listed in their job description. Then you find yourself wearing many other hats and burnt out for $36k/annually. Been there, done that. I’m happy to have gone out on my own and make my own schedule.

Not necessarily Esmeralda. I do think it's important to have a good foundation and understanding of interior design, but it depends what you want to do in your business. And it also depends on where you live, what the laws are for working in Interior design. I am a certified decorator but do lots of redesigns for clients homes. I rely on my contractors for advice on structural elements and my plans are not ready for permits. My CAD plans need to be taken to an architect for that.

i'm going to a technical college next year to study interior design which is a 2 year program. is a 2 year associate degree sufficient enough or would a bachelor's degree be a better choice if i decide to continue on with my education? i'll be 28 when i graduate with a bachelor's if i do that route. would you work/hire someone with a 2 year interior design degree with retail background in your opinion? thank you.
This is really dependent on what specific area of design that you wish to specialize in. For example, kitchens and bath design, commercial design, residential design, decorating etc. Lots of options, try google searches to research what interests you the most.
There are many ways to enter this business. I personally found that the Interior Decorating course I took did not prepare me well for starting up my own business. But I did have a background in Human Resources that helped me in setting up my business and organizing my processes. Depending on where you live, you are not able to start up and get a license for design unless you have proper credentials and certifications.

Hi I currently live in Israel, and I graduated in 2012 B. DES school. Since than I worked for 3 years in an office, and when moved to another city opened my own business in 2013. Although it is more of a drawing assistant to other designers and architects, I did finished few privet projects of design on my own. My business here is going very well but I do wont to detach my self from the drawing part and get more projects. Now me and my husband are thinking of moving to Canada (maybe Calgary) and I'm looking for every bite of information about what I should do with my business here, what to expect there.

I am a Certified Interior Decorator. The roles can overlap, but there is more to know as an Interior designer in terms of structure and codes. Run your business with organized processes and be a stand out professional in your field and do not worry about what other people think. It is a hard business, but anything worth having is not going to be easy. You do you and do what makes you happy! 🙂

If you already have a degree, that will likely make it easier for you to understand, because of your schooling - what you learned and what you enjoyed the best. Then research to learn about different interior design firms in the area (s) or Canada that you are hoping to move to. You will also have to figure out what you need to do in order to get a working visa or immigrate. Lots of work to do, but exciting opportunities lie ahead!
That's really a vague question, not sure what you are asking exactly? Do you want to work in the design field? Consider working in a retail store, either for furniture or tiles/flooring or a fabric outlet. It depends what you want to do.

Hello Prabhjeet. I recommend deciding which province you want to live/work in. Then reach out to Design firms in the main cities of that province to see what qualifications they require specifically and if they recognize any of the credits you have taken in India.
Interesting to hear you expected numbers to be hire for those working for other design firms. These are just a few examples, I'm sure there are higher paying ID jobs out there. Hello Prabhjeet. I recommend deciding which province you want to live/work in. Then reach out to Design firms in the main cities of that province to see what qualifications they require specifically and if they recognize any of the credits you have taken in India.

Interesting to hear you expected numbers to be hire for those working for other design firms. These are just a few examples, I'm sure there are higher paying ID jobs out there. I had to take college algebra and two physics classes for Interior Design, then the school took out the two physics classes after I was a junior lol.
