- Today, Steve looks at this very nice 1970 Pontiac GTO,. Fully numbers matching 400ci V8 with PHS documentation. Factory color combination, hood tach and 3 Speed Hurst manual transmission!
This car is number 3 of 20 cars that High Octane Classics will be sending to Barrett Jackson Las Vegas on June 30th with NO RESERVE!

My uncle worked at a Pontiac dealer that sold a lot of performance models and sponsored some local racers. My uncle used his employee discount in 1970 to order a new GTO with a Ram Air IV engine and 4 speed. They took his order and his deposit. This was some time into the model year. Pontiac later contacted the dealer and said that the Ram Air IV engine had been discontinued late in the model year in the GTO, for the Ram Air 455 HO engine, for the same price. My uncle wasn't happy about that and the dealer had some contacts and influence at Pontiac. Since the Ram Air IV engine was still being put in 1970 Firebirds, Pontiac agreed to assemble one last 1970 GTO with a Ram Air IV engine for my uncle. His car should be the last Ram Air IV GTO made.
I think you said 70 GTO came standard with front wheel disc brakes. Not so. My 70 Judge had all 4 drums. That sucked.
I'm guessing $80,000
It’s a shame it has no a/c. Small basic engine to move that thing.
Wasn't another feature of the Humbler an exhaust cut out from the facotry?
That was on chevelle if I remember correctly.
Yes. It was a short lived option and GM discontinued it. It was called "VOE" or Vacuum Operated Exhaust. There's a video on YT of it. About 233 of them were made before the option was dropped. GM made about 40,000 GTOs for 1970. Reportedly, GM executives saw the ad on Superbowl IV and were enraged about it, as well as the fact that it featured other GM division muscle cars in the ad/video. VOE also violated noise regulations in several states.
@@zairomolino4074 No the GTO had it for 1970 for a short time. There's a commercial clip of it on YT.
Oh yeah remember the ad. I was sure to remember it was a chevelle. My fault :)
Please pardon the mistake around 1:28. This car is a 3 Speed.
Its a red twin to my 70, also a 400 3 speed, power steering and brakes with no AC, but mine is Palomino Copper. I'm changing the color when I give it a frame off, not entirely sure what color it will be, but probably not red and certainly not its original color. I painted it Palomino Copper to see if it would grow on me... it didn't.
I was expecting it to be abandoned in an old junkyard...
Love the cool new "Lead ins" however, need to quiet the music down a little as you begin to talk, if I may give my two cents. love the content!
Dave Barron; keep your two cents. Your not watching a Hollywood movie...
@@SD70ACE- Wow, no kidding? I didn't know that, Grow up.
A blast to the past sure miss all my cars 69 super Bee 4 speed my Challenger my charger my69,440 Coronet ECT at least I can say I had them 🤔wish I had them now 😆
Let's take it all the way with the VIN so we win: 2 for Pontiac, 42 for GTO, 37 for two door hardtop, 0 for 1970 model year, P for Pontiac, MI assembly and the rest is the production sequence. The Pontiac, MI plant was the 'home' plant and was closed in August 1988. The last cars built there were the rear wheel drive G bodies and the Fiero.
No tag, can't brag, but I got it figured out, no doubt: ST70 for 1970 model year, 24237 for Pontiac GTO, P (or PON in some cases) for Pontiac, MI assembly, 75 75 (or 75U 75L in some cases) for Cardinal Red upper and lower exterior paint, possible 255 for Saddle interior trim, and the build date code is unknown without the tag.
About 233 of the 40k GTOs made for 1970 had the VOE option, or Vacuum Operated Exhaust. This was quickly discontinued because it violated noise laws in many states, but also because the ad that premiered at Superbowl IV in 1970 showed other division's muscle cars. All of this enraged GM brass and the ad (and option) was immediately pulled. There's a video clip of the VOE on YT if you search for it.
You sure get around GOOGLE MAN ! We apparently have similar tastes in car channels, I notice your comments frequently! I too am addicted to trim & body tags and deciphering them. I love to find factory "chalk markings" as well. See ya on the next video!
@@rogergoodman8665 Sure thing. Need the tag to brag and the VIN to win.
I had the identical car , 400 4 speed but mine had a factory bench seat .
I had the identical car... 389 tripower... then 400 tripower... 4 speed... turquoise... '65... convertible... black top... black bucket seats... tach in dash... averaged 17 MPG in easy driving... seemed faster than the later ones... LOL!
Great review. Learn something every time I watch one of Steve’s videos!
40 thousand sold sounds like a large number of GTO's to me ........
I had a red 70 GTO with parchment ( white) interior and white Vynal top! What a sweet car bought it in 1979 with 80,000 miles for the grand price of $1350.00! One night I tried to see if she would do it, SHE DID, scared me, didn't do that again! She was tacked out! A local citizen who is in gto club and has restored several GTOs has it now, frame off restored!
Awesome car. I’m not a fan of the T handle shifter. Rather have a black or white ball.
have my step dads 71 gto he bought new. 400 3 spd muncie. love the three speed. these engines have good torque down low where the 4 spd isnt really missed except for bragging rights. and the power discs brakes were and option. drum brakes were standard as mine still has..
Also has the incorrect mirrors. 71 mirrors, the tee handle is also incorrect. GTO’s had shifter balls
It's not a BEAK..it's a arrow head design!!!
I had this same GTO wish I still had it.
I had this exact year non-RA engine in my 1974 Trans Am, certainly better than the smoggy 400 the 74 was equipped with from the factory. Hard convincing people at the time there was a non RA GTO engine in 1970.....
A lot of people were using aftermarket gauges back then. They didn't want to rely on "idiot lights" alone.
I had a 1970 that I called my ticket car. Every time I turned around I was pulled over, until a little old lady blew a stop sign and totaled it.
Nice description Steve shame at 3 minutes they wouldn’t stop and respect your video !!! DA
Beautiful new car! All right no new but certainly looks like new and sounds like old school mean.
What are the tire sizes all around. The cars sits just right
Another great presentation Steve. Keep up the good work maybe that Ford GT in the background could be next?
Turn the music off I can't hear the car
Steve....in the early 90s i bought a 74 lemans it had a chevy 250 6cyl and a 3spd.trans. manuel steering and it had the louvers on the rear side windows....bench seat car...ive never seen 1 before or after....a freak mabey?? just wondering if you or any body else has run across anything like it??
The Chevy straight 6 was available in about anything 'GM'... and in most brands of boats... marine version was a tad hotter... higher compression ratio, 89 octane gas, step bigger camshaft, 2 bbl. carb... kinda snotty sounding for a 6...
Definitely needs a spoiler!!
Nice car! Why the double tachometers?
who put base coat clear coat on it?
That took a lot of lead to balance the spare tire.
Miss my 69 judge and 73 Transam
The standard RA III engine was a real beast for a standard engine. Only bad point in one needed high octane gas as compression was 10.5:1.
The ram air engine was not standard in the 70 GTO
I know that car sold that what we call the bees 🐝 nees. Super Clean car . I have yet to see one of those in my neighborhood growing up in San Diego .
I see a Palomino Copper 70 GTO every day when I leave my front door. Its not as clean as that one, and not numbers matching. Im waiting to give it the frame off it needs, like I did with my 65 GTO.
Steve the humbler was I believe an exhaust system bypass option which was manually operated. 1970 was the first year.
I own an 1970 Pontiac GTO and as he said, they came with 14-inch rally two wheels, but I may have to consider going to a 15 in rim - they seem to fit perfectly on the car
I remember well the "Humbler" TV advertisements. Got a slot car GTO. 6 years later in high school i bought my 68 GTO.
Steve I had a 1976 Golden Anniversary Grand Prix. This was a beautiful car, only with Gold paint. If you ever come across one, please do a review. Love your work.
Beautiful ride!
I like it. No A/C, and a 4 speed. Only thing better is Ram Air., (or a 455)
Great American classic style and muscle. 🇺🇸👍🇺🇸💪🇺🇸
🔥🐐🔥
I will consider a trade
I got a 33 Plymouth Roadster hotrod
Hey Steve what's the the green car on the right?
Looks like a 70 Coronet RT 😎✌️
@@haroldbirge6881 not the vert in front of the gto. I ment the one besides the gto, on the right.
Probably is a falcon
Looks like Harold can see pretty good. I'd pontiacs
