No, he's laughing. Everyone who is into collecting runs into stories like this...and usually has one or two of their own to tell about how they picked up something for nothing or next to nothing at an estate auction, a yard sale. a post office auction or state auction.

It's actually called "haggling" or "dickering". Bartering is simply trading a thing for another thing, usually not involving money. You can haggle when you barter, though. Just don't dicker around too much.

@@samuelrussell7003 this is a pretty late answer, but it really does matter when you sell an bought object, when you have yourself lots of paying out to do, like costs of running a business.if an object just sits around while you gave out redeemable cash, then you can get in a real pickle there pal.

i work at a pawn shop, and this is what we do, because if we buy something, we're literally taking a risk, especially if its something that is hard to sell otherwise we will just lose money, which is obviously bad for business.
She is the best "expert" this show has. She never low balls a customer. She is the fairest of all.

I paid 20$ for four rare books today that I’ve never seen in my 15 years of collecting the author. I had been prepared to pay 50-80 for each one.... someone on eBay had no clue or didn’t care the actual value, because that 20 was for all four. I had begun to think all copies of any were lost/held in permanent collections.
Now, if I could find the other three on my list! One last was seen for 54 USD on Amazon but that was 3 years ago.... never seen another copy... the second retails for 20... the third I’ve not actually seen for lower than 76 I think.

EasyThere Pilgrim that's the point. A pawnshop is s business and just like any other business it takes risks. The fact that the customer managed to nab the book for $2 somewhere and then sell it for a profit at $700 just proves that the customer did a better job than the pawnshop because the pawnshop shop didn't find the book first to sell it for their own profit.
2 bucks makes 700, it's a flipping grand day.

When I was a kid I actually thought there was an underground railroad. I used to think, how did they get the tracks underground with anyone knowing? In my head I pictured it like one of those mine car rides at an amusement park.
