Without question. They're almost almost always awarded posthumously. Johnson Beharry nearly died winning his. An RPG exploded 6 inches from his head while he was rescuing mates during a devastating ambush. Despite head injuries, Beharry extracted his mates under continuous RPG & small-arms fire all the while fully exposed because the navigation optics on his Warrior AFV were destroyed.
Gallantry of the highest order and forever known as Willie Apiata VC i think only 11 people have received it since ww2 now a maori boy from the coast has 1 but to be given it to him on his marae in front of his people that's special I could see how honoured he was wearing that korowai as well and being such a humble man but that's a common trait for those S.A.S boys.
For doing the government's dirty and killing innocent people, Because America told a big lie about Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iraq to the world tell me where is the weapons of mass destruction, the SAS went to look for.or will just give you a medal for saving your mates, shouldn't be there in the first place. Look at the world too many wars nothing changed only innocent people dying and some making money very sad world we live in now even the government are inorging the veterans in nz with the problems they going through.
You always do everything for your mates, what you did Willie was natural for every soldier and you deserve every inch of that VC. Thank god you all made it back safely. You have my upmost respect and adulation. Phil British Army Retd
His mother in law was one of my platoon sergeants at lsv lol none of us knew untill he rockd up one day and the platoon commander told us . Hes a awsome guy
May I say, as a shite bag from Scotland. YES! I salute this gentleman. United, you faught with my grandfather, so your people, & I, over here, could be free. NEVER, EVER, forgotten xxxx
This man should have the title of honorable before his name not magistrates. He's one of the bravest men I've ever heard about, perhaps millineals could learn how not to chase glory & be humble, focus in service for others not narcissism. We could all learn from this soft spoken man.
Cpl Willie Apiata VC, and Cpl Ben Roberts-Smith VC, have a common thread. Love of family. Humility. Mates. Courage...luck. Courage. Determination. Courage. And so much more that we, who were'nt 'there', will never know or feel. However hard we try.
You hear so much of US soldiers but there has been so many different soldiers from many nations gibe there lives in Afghanistan and iraq I LOVE hearing these stories about these men.
Mate you are a legend and so humble. Not bad for a bloody kiwi. Ha ha ha good on you mate 👍. All the best in the future, cheers bro (that's my attempt at kiwi slang)ever in Australia look me up.
This sort of thing makes one value the links between the UK and NZ in The Commonwealth. Unfortunately, all of that is forgotten on the rugby football field!
comment at 3.20 "his people" says it all he is one of them not one of us, brave and selfless without doubt, but a hero i think not but an assassin, just another butcher doing the yanks dirty work
No Maori are Maori distinct from other New Zealanders as stated in the treaty of waitangi, also they were the second people to arrive here not the first, the USA throwing its weight about goose stepping around the middle east and supporting the Israeli occupation and theft of Palestine is the reason the west is hated, if they didn't start it we wouldn't be there. i have greater respect for human life than to want to be one of these hired killers
Nice guy, but LA SWAT have to put their lives on the line every day. SWAT man Street charges heavily armed enemies and saves women hostages all the time. LA SWAT do not get battle stress, as they are fearless.

A soldier of VC, Australians see this young man a ANZAC legend! Three cheers from the Aussie Hip Hip Hooray.
Anyone who wins a VC is worthy of a film. What a humble, amazing man.

You do not win the VC , you are awarded it
I think one of the criteria to be considered for earning a VC is that there has to be a 90% chance of being mortally wounded. @colinstewart1432
What a great guy and a humble man. What a dad to look up to.

The VC was given to him in Wellington. But yes very honourable and humble.
Young Maori boys have a true warrior to look up to.
Here in the states we call them silent professionals. The a great many things that they don't get credit for. Semper Fi Willie.

He's the most humble and modest soldier I've seen. That's why he's the man!

Stealthy, but when shit hits the fan he’ll be a monster
He finished that run with his colleague over his shoulders and bullet holes in his uniform. No one understood how he was hit
isn't he the first Victoria cross recipient of the war in Afghanistan
Great warrior soldier. Typical of SAS. Would fit well in US Army special forces. Not a loudmouth blowhard like navy squids
Does the great Mr apiata, does he drink goon?, he be a man I be proud to drink with

SAS guys rarely get medals, let alone the VC. Often, it's because they're on deniable ops. Or operating in friendly countries.
