Richard was the go to man, he could hob nob well after moving to Ca. Karen loved the drums, and when Richard heard her sing a few notes, he went to work, eventually getting shy Karen out from singing behind the drums, and even though older was behind her, making her the Star she could be in every way, making sure all details were attended to.
I did not know that Herb actually recorded a version of "Close To You" I thought he just passed the lead sheet off to Richard because he didn't like the lyrics. Thanks for posting.

Actually, Burt Bacharach wrote "(They Long To Be) Close To You" in the mid-1960's and I think that Lynn Anderson recorded it but her rendition wasn't a huge hit, and then in 1970 Herb Alpert gave the lead sheet of the song to Richard Carpenter saying to him that Bacharach had told him (Herb Alpert) to give the song to Richard with the proviso/condition that he could do anything with the song as far as the arrangement of the song but to leave in the piano bridge in the song which Richard did.
FD: i subscribed to Herb Alpert's youtube channel just a couple months before the drop of the Movie. Herb made it available to all of his subs. it is a remarkable documentary well deserved too
